Differences between the secure smartphone Samsung Galaxy S7 and S7 Edge. Galaxy S7 vs Galaxy S7 Edge: which Samsung smartphone will be the best? What is better samsung s7

Samsung launched the Galaxy S6 and its curved version, the Galaxy S6 Edge, early last year. All was well until the second half of the year saw confusion with the Samsung Galaxy S6 Edge+ that was introduced with the Note 5. And recently the clarity came, now we have the S7, the S7 Edge with a 5.5″ display, and in August- September we will see Note 6. Of course, these are guesses, but they seem obvious to me. Today we will look at the first wave of Galaxy flagships.

Samsung Galaxy S7 & S7 Edge video review

Design and ergonomics

The design of S7 clearly traces the features of last year's models. S7 is similar to S6, S7 Edge is similar to S6 Edge +, but in real life, at the first meeting, you notice quite serious differences. Firstly, in all models, the glass on the front and back is now 2.5D (except for places where it was 3D, it used to be 2D), which makes the smartphone feel more comfortable in the hand. This is especially true S7 Edge, the previous model had almost sharp edges and directly crashed into the palm. Although some people like it, the novelty wins in terms of convenience.

The materials remain the same: glass front and back, metal on the side. The arrangement of the elements has also not changed, except for a few points. The camera does not protrude so much, this moment bothered many, and the IR port disappeared from the upper edge. This is a pity, earlier it was possible to control household appliances. Although it was no longer in SGS6 Edge + and Note 5.

In terms of design and ergonomics, I liked the new items. The usual S7 turned out to be more convenient to use, it is more compact and there are no false clicks on the side faces. But the impression of the curved edges of the display in the Edge still remains, nevertheless, this is still rare to find anywhere. I didn’t like the fact that the glass is very easily soiled, prints and stains are constantly visible on it, you need to wipe it. Well, the logo on the front, how long, Samsung? I know which manufacturer’s smartphone I’m paying for, and if I forget, I can always look at the back side. In fairness, somewhere common sense still starts to get the better of ambition and, at least for the domestic market, the S7 should be available without a logo on the front. Hope it's not fake.

The fingerprint scanner is located in the home key, as before. I liked it in terms of response speed, but Touch ID is still inferior, errors happen more often. You can add up to four fingerprints in total.

Many are confused by the lack of USB Type-C in the new product, but, as for me, this is easily explained. Firstly, Samsung itself has re-released all sorts of things for MicroUSB, like power banks and Gear VR 2. The transition would mean the incompatibility of new flagships with other new devices within the company itself. Secondly, the market is not yet ready, such a sharp transition would have a rather detrimental effect on ordinary people. And so, LG, Huawei and other manufacturers will prepare the ground and S8 will solemnly acquire a new port next year. Or maybe Note 6 will be with him, we'll see.

But there are two things that come back to us straight from 2014, namely the Samsung Galaxy S5 - the Micro SD card slot and, THANK YOU SO MUCH, ip68 protection. And this means that you can take your smartphone with you to the bathroom, to the pool, to the beach, in the rain and generally anywhere. And instead of a memory card, if necessary, you can insert a second SIM card. Among A-brands, this is not often found, agree.

Display

Of course, the screens in the new products are Super AMOLED, which is getting better every year. Unlike the Galaxy S6 and S6 Edge, the new generation gets a diagonal split between the regular S7 and S7 Edge. The first display has a diagonal of 5.1″, the second - 5.5″. Resolution for both QHD, or 2560x1440 pixels.

There is no need to talk much about the quality, it is chic here, however, as in the case of the S6, in the usual S7 at maximum deflection angles, the glass shimmers with green and purple tones. There are no such jokes with Edge. I don't know why they didn't do this before, but now, finally, information can be displayed on the display even in the locked state. This feature is called Always On. Why has this been on Nokia since time immemorial, when no one has heard of Amoled displays yet, and Samsung has just introduced it to itself? After all, Super AMOLED is simply created for such features, when only individual pixels can be displayed on the display, without including the entire display. Naturally, energy is spent only on those pixels that are active. So, on a locked display, the time, calendar, alerts, and even some individual pictures can be displayed. Moreover, you can choose display styles, colors and even backgrounds. Yes, the picture does not have to be monochrome, because the amoled does not care how exactly a single pixel will work. If the phone is in your pocket, thanks to the proximity sensors, it redeems and extinguishes this information until you take out the smartphone again. In short, a trifle, but so comfortable, I'm very happy about it!

cameras

For an inexperienced user, it may seem that the camera has become worse, because in the previous generation it was 16 MP, and now it has been downgraded to 12. But even in our first one I made the assumption that if this happens, the camera can wildly break away from everyone on white light. The white light of smartphones, of course. Why? Each individual pixel has become larger and now its size is 1.4 microns. Let me remind you that in SGS6 the size of an individual pixel is 1.2 microns. This means that each pixel can receive more light. Let's add here a faster aperture optics with f1.7 and really something uncompromising should turn out. Is it so? We have already made a preliminary one and the difference is not great, somewhere the Samsung is a little better, somewhere the iPhone. It's not bad, because we compare the strongest, but I expected a breakaway, as I said. By the way, the aspect ratio of the matrix has changed and is now 4:3, as in the iPhone.

As before, there are many modes in the camera, but I am most interested in a few: pro mode with full manual settings, auto mode for most tasks, Youtube live mode and the ability to take pictures in RAW. All this is here. In RAW, photos can be pulled out quite strongly, TIFF and regular JPEG did not stand next to each other. In Snapseed, you can already work with uncompressed formats, and there you can extract information from completely illuminated areas, for example, the sky. In this generation, SloMo has finally become usable, you can shoot honest 240 fps in 720p. Thanks for that too!

The front camera has a resolution of 5 MP, the aspect ratio of the matrix is \u200b\u200blike the main one - 4: 3, but the angle is wide and now it fits a lot not only on the sides, but also on top and bottom. Profit! True, with the detailing of the front camera, not everything is rosy, it deliberately blurs everything a little to avoid the appearance of noise.

Sample photos and videos are available, soon we will make a separate comparison of top camera phones!

Performance

We already wrote a separate post on the part - they happen at maximum settings, but not critical, you can already play. But in GTA SA at maximum speed, everything is bad: there are artifacts, and constant 20 fps feels like. I hope this is just a game not designed for Exynos, we'll wait and see. In any case, there were no problems with everything else: the interface works quickly, applications and games too.

We have the latest eight-core Exynos 8890, Mali T880 M12 graphics and as many as 4 GB of RAM, of which 1.5 GB are permanently available to the user after closing all applications. User memory can be 32 or 64 GB, but the main thing is that it can be expanded using memory cards, up to 200 GB are supported. In Ukraine, a model with only 32 GB of internal memory will be available.

The battery capacity pleased me in both cases. In the regular Galaxy S7, it is 3000 mAh, in the Edge it is 3600 mAh. For comparison, the SGS6 Edge + with a 5.7″ display had a battery capacity of 3000 mAh! So you can count on two days of more or less active work.

ON

Out of the box, the user has access to the latest version of Android - 6.0.1 Marshmallow. A proprietary TouchWiz interface is installed on top of Android, which has long since learned to be normal. It's cool that there is a minimum of third-party software, I remember with horror the years when a brand new device had several screens of no idea what and it could not be demolished. Well, the themes - they continue to develop, the theme store has been updated, beautiful and understandable categories have appeared, there are more and more themes and many really high-quality ones. If you want a naked Android - take it, do you want a hello kitty? Stop reading my articles.

Samsung every year tries to please users with its flagships. The release of a new smartphone from this company is the number one event. At the beginning of this year, a new gadget was introduced - the Samsung Galaxy S7. Reviews vied with each other touted the new version of the phone. According to the developers, the gadget has surpassed all expectations, and most importantly - it has become a cut above the previous "colleague" S6. Is this so, let's look further.

First impression

It is worth saying that the first impression of the smartphone is positive. Of course, this is due to both the company's marketing and the appearance of the Galaxy S7. Design reviews are the most flattering. Customers like not only the version with curved edges of the display, but also the classic model. The smartphone turned out to be presentable. He seems to be perfect in every way. It harmoniously combines external minimalism and crazy functionality.

The main competitor of this model is a gadget from Apple. The race between the American and Korean companies can last forever. Developers vying with each other try to improve their models and fight for the favor of customers. In this case, it is Samsung that wins more often. Since it is still more affordable than an iPhone. Nevertheless, there will be competition, so I want to know how this time it influenced the new model.

Equipment

Regarding the configuration received different. Some expected to get a complete set of everything they could, while others were happy with what they had. Basically, the package includes a charger, a USB cable and an adapter. There is also a clip for the tray, and the best part is the presence of a branded headset.

The box in which the smartphone is sold is presentable. It is black and matte. Made in the form of a book and closes with a magnet. The model is indicated in large letters on the front, and some characteristics of the smartphone are presented on the back.

So different

It's probably not surprising that it receives positive reviews. It differs from the classic version only in appearance. Its display has curved edges, just like its predecessor, the S6 Edge. Otherwise, this model does not differ from the version with a flat screen. Specifications for both phones are identical.

Insanely handsome

The design of the Galaxy S7 received good reviews from the owners. It has similarities with the previous model. The first thing that catches your eye is the changed edges of the hull. They were made rounded and beveled. The owners now do not complain about the inconvenience. The phone became much more comfortable to use. Despite the rather large dimensions, it is convenient to hold it in one hand.

The screen size of the regular model was 5.1 inches, while the Edge became 5.5 inches. The flagship was given 2.5D glass, which visually reduced the gadget. The main disadvantage of the new model is the soiled body.

Color solution

A new color scheme has been developed. But each of the shades is made in a calm color. It is matte and has lost its metallic effect. Gold, silver, black and white are available for users. The charcoal option looks best, although dust and fingerprints will be most noticeable on it.

Details

Case thickness 8 mm. Given the overall dimensions, the smartphone looks quite thin. It weighs a little - 152 grams. One of the most notable changes is the transformation of the camera: it no longer protrudes above the surface of the cover, which means that the risk of damage to it is reduced. The Home key is softer. It seems to be integrated into the body. For its manufacture used matte plastic.

On the front panel, the front camera, earpiece, notification and lighting sensors are located on top. The usual place is occupied by the company logo. The back of the phone also looks very minimalist: a square camera window in the top middle, an LED flash next to it. The logo is duplicated on the case cover.

The remaining elements of the case remained in their usual places. On the left side is the volume rocker. At the top is a noise-canceling microphone, as well as a SIM card tray. On the right is the on / off button, and on the bottom, in addition to the connectors for the charger and headphones, there is a main microphone and an external speaker grille.

Integrity

As always, the body of the new flagship is monolithic. It is impossible to disassemble and replace the battery yourself. But you should understand that if something suddenly happens to the battery, it can be replaced at a service center.

Usually, solidity also implies protection from water. If it was removed in the previous model, then the new smartphone can again be bathed and not be afraid of anything. The protection standard here is, as always, IP68. Despite the fact that the charging connector is not covered by anything, the board has a special coating with a solution that repels liquid. Speakers and microphones are covered with a special membrane.

By the way, in order to prevent corrosion, all the metal elements of the phone were subjected to special treatment. The Galaxy S7 Edge received mixed reviews from owners about this feature. Someone immediately rushed to blame the developers for the fact that after the “bathing” of the smartphone, the speakers began to work worse. Such a problem is indeed observed, but it disappears immediately after the phone dries completely.

Usage

Before we delve into the analysis of technical characteristics, it is worth mentioning the impressions of using a smartphone. Due to the fact that the battery has become more capacious, the size of the smartphone has increased. This is especially noticeable with the Galaxy S7 Edge version. Reviews about this are only positive. Despite the fact that visually the flagship has become larger, it is still comfortable to hold it in your hand.

Pleased with the tray for the "sim card". The fact is that he made a rubberized insert that protects the gadget from dust. In general, all materials have become much stronger, which makes the device seem more reliable. Although there were owners who accidentally dropped the phone in the first few days, and then complained about the fragile glass.

Screen

If we talk about the regular version, then the display has 5.1 inches, and the matrix for it is SuperAMOLED with incredibly rich and vibrant colors. QHD screen resolution. Not only reviews, but also the opinion of competent experts proves that the displays of the Korean company are the best. This fact is also confirmed by the fact that to this day many manufacturers are ready to buy outdated screen models for their gadgets from Koreans.

The display of Edge 32gb is much more interesting. Reviews are more common just about this model. A redesigned version of the curved display, compared to the previous model, has become much more convenient. They really did work on it. Many users of the S6 Edge have complained about the display not working properly. Accidental clicks on the sides of the display were often observed. They disappeared due to the fact that they corrected the shape of the case and rounded it a little. The sensor is working correctly.

Despite all the positive aspects of the display, there were still unpleasant moments. Protective glass received mixed reviews. Those who immediately bought the film rarely complained. But those who relied on technology were disappointed. The screen really collects not only prints, but also small scratches are often found. And for them to appear, special efforts are not needed.

Display innovations

Probably, you should not touch the colors and contrast of the screen. It is clear that SuperAMOLED always produces a slightly artificial picture, however, with very rich, saturated and bright colors. That's just about the latest in the Samsung Galaxy S7 32gb reviews are positive.

For the new model, a technology with a polarizing filter was invented. It was placed at a 45 degree angle. Now the screen is comfortable to use in sunglasses or with the use of polarized glass.

The next innovation concerns automatic brightness control. The fact is that it can work here personally for each user. It is known that the perception of brightness for each owner may be different. Korean developers have introduced a system that could independently select lightness and color based on observations.

For the option to work, you need to use not only manual settings, but also automatic mode for several days. The smartphone will remember all the wishes and in the future will select the ideal screen parameters. In practice, the option works very well and accurately.

Always in touch

There is also a new Always On option. When locked, the screen remains partially active. It can constantly show the time, calendar, notifications, or just a picture. At first, the Galaxy S7 received negative reviews about this. Those who did not use this option believed that it could "gobble up" a lot of percent of the charge.

Later it became known that instead of the declared 1-2% in 12 hours, a phone with Always On spends up to 10%. This figure is quite subjective. For some reason, the waste of charge with this option on different phones is different. However, the feature is really useful. You always have a clock, a calendar, missed calls and messages in front of your eyes.

Memorable changes

Last year, the Koreans decided to abandon the memory card. They believed that 32, 64 and 128 GB would be enough for everyone. By and large, it is. But in practice there were problems. The larger the amount of internal memory, the more difficult it was to find a model with this version. There were no problems with the presence of Samsung Galaxy S7 32gb. Reviews began to appear negative.

In 2016, Samsung realized the mistake and returned support for the memory card. Now on sale there are flagships with 32 and 64 GB of internal memory. Who will miss this, will be able to purchase a memory card. The only thing that in this case will have to sacrifice one slot for the "sim card". This is due to the fact that the flagship has a hybrid slot that supports either two carriers or one "sim card" and one memory card.

RAM increased to 4 GB. This will be quite enough to support a bunch of tasks at the same time. The transfer speed here is 3 gigabytes per second. This option is the champion among others.

It is worth mentioning the memory manager for the Samsung Galaxy S7 Edge 32gb, reviews of which were negative in the previous model. This feature often unloaded applications from memory at the wrong time, which sometimes caused indignation. So, the manager itself remained in the new flagship, but a mode was added to it, which still allows you to save running applications in memory, and unloads them only when necessary.

Such changes are very pleasant, given that running software can be stored for a long time until the user needs additional memory. As soon as it is needed, applications are sent to the buffer. Pleased with the speed of launching programs from the cache. Previously, the software that was in memory was launched so quickly, now even from the buffer, the smartphone unloads applications with lightning speed.

Powerful

Finally, we got to the most interesting. It is already clear that outwardly the flagship was able to conquer users. But for many, design is not fundamental. Most users need performance. There are good reviews about it for the Samsung Galaxy S7 Edge, and there are practically no drawbacks.

The MALI T880 MP12 is responsible for the graphics. The gadget is powered by Exynos 8890 Octa. There are versions that will receive the famous Qualcomm 820. In general, the opposition of these processors has existed on the market for a long time. Last year, the Koreans abandoned Qualcomm. Reviews about him were often negative. Users complained about the strong heating of the case.

The rejection of this chipset hit Qualcomm's stock hard. Yet many users prefer these particular processors. Objectively, Exynos is inferior to Snapdragon, but in practice, this is not noticeable to the average user.

As a result, the version with Qualcomm has its drawbacks. The main one is the rapid loss of battery power. Compared to Exynos, this chipset loses 10% more runtime. Snapdragon integration with the camera also affects the speed of some functions. There are other disadvantages as well. Considering that the Koreans were still preparing their flagship for the Exynos 8890 Octa processor, it is with it that the version is considered the most optimized.

Indicators

In terms of performance, you can only find positive reviews for the Galaxy S7. There are practically no drawbacks, but they can be noticed only by the most picky users. Otherwise, in synthetic benchmarks, the flagship shows only the highest results.

Of course, after more than 6 months, he may already give way to some Chinese gadgets. Nevertheless, record figures were presented at the beginning of sales: there were more than 101 thousand "parrots" in Antutu.

I must say that at the moment this is one of the most powerful processors, even after the release of the seventh iPhone. It is also very important that, despite its speed, it shows excellent energy efficiency, optimization and power consumption.

Operating system

The flagship came out with Android 6.0.1. There are very good reviews about it for the Samsung Galaxy S7, and there are practically no shortcomings. Dissatisfaction is sometimes found only with respect to TouchWiz. However, the shell was redesigned and optimized for the "OS". Now the phone system seems organic.

The menu remains as concise as in the previous model. For some reason, the music player was removed, so you will have to download it yourself. There are also some other software that were previously system software. Otherwise, everything has practically remained unchanged regarding the Galaxy S6.

Activity

As mentioned earlier, the size of the smartphone is due to the fact that the battery has become a little stronger - 3000 mAh. How long the Samsung Galaxy S7 will last is impossible to calculate. It all depends on the user, software optimization, power consumption, quality of the charging unit.

On average, the phone safely survives until the evening. For more economical people, it can last up to two days. With continuous video playback, the phone works for about 12-13 hours. For charging, there is not only microUSB, but also wireless power.

Photo/video

About the camera Galaxy S7 received the expected reviews. Some owners complained about the quality of pictures from the front camera. But this opinion is rather subjective, because what can be expected from a resolution of 5 megapixels. But the main camera shoots very well. It got 12 megapixels, which is rather strange, considering that the S6 version had 16 megapixels.

But such changes did not affect the quality of the images. On the contrary, everything has become much better. This is due to the fact that the pixel size has been increased to 1.4 microns. Thus, the matrix now receives more information. The module here is the Sony IMX260. Aperture increased to 1.7.

In general, the camera software itself was equipped with a large number of "buns". In addition to the fact that adjustment for selfies is available in the new flagship, there are also a bunch of different modes. Pictures at night are of high quality. There are new scenes and stories, as well as a variety of camera settings.

Replacement

It is worth saying that the phone costs about 50-70 thousand rubles. For those who do not have that kind of money, there is another version of the Galaxy S7. The copy received not the best reviews. But what can you expect from a Chinese fake. The main feature of the "fake" flagship has become almost identical to the original appearance. In addition, the price is also pleasing - only 6-7 thousand rubles.

The rest of the stats are still different. The copy has a less powerful processor - MediaTek MT6735 ARM Cortex-A53. There are 4 cores here. The same Chinese chip is responsible for the graphics, but an order of magnitude cheaper and weaker - Mali-T720. The operating system here is more "ancient" - Android 5.0.2. No LTE networks. The quality of materials is also inferior to the original.

They speak negatively about the technical characteristics. If the original Galaxy S7 does not slow down at all and can perform a whole range of tasks, then its copy noticeably overheats and starts to lag at the slightest load.

In general, this is a fairly good Chinese fake. But keep in mind that no one will give you a guarantee for it. And there are a lot of phones like this model in the Chinese market. But unlike this copy, they are much better and more powerful.

conclusions

In general, the smartphone really turned out to be very cool. Outwardly, it is almost perfect. Of course, the version with curved display edges is more popular. Although there are those who prefer the classic screen. The main drawback is the protective glass in the Galaxy S7. Reviews about him are not always good. This is most likely due to the assembly of the phone. Since there are buyers who have already dropped the phone more than once, but the display remained intact. And there are those who could accidentally crush the display in the bag.

In general, if you want to buy this flagship for yourself, then it’s better to come to the store once again and feel it. In practice, it turns out that someone falls in love with a model with lightning speed, while someone’s interest in her fades away.

From your own experience, you can understand how high-quality the OS inside the gadget is. It is also worth touching the screen itself and deciding on the version of S7 / S7 Edge. The phone turned out to be very subjective. To some, the display colors may seem too bright, and even adjusting the settings will not help. Someone will be dissatisfied with the front camera. Someone still can not afford the cost of the flagship.

Analyzing dry numbers, the smartphone really turned out to be good. Outwardly, it is minimalistic, but inside it contains a whole range of options and parameters that later turn out to be vital. The Korean company has released very reliable smartphones, which are now among the best on the market.

Koreans make wonderful gadgets - technologically advanced and of high quality. One of the latest models - Galaxy A8 - is now actively advertised. Against the backdrop of very expensive S8 and especially S9, this model looks attractive, but in appearance it does not differ from them at all. However, A8 cannot compete with expensive flagships, but it will compete with the top smartphone of the previous year - S7.

Parameter comparison

The Samsung Galaxy A8 is a mid-range phone introduced at the end of 2017. S7 is the flagship of 2016 (sales started on 03/21/16), which received an improved version with a display with curved edges - S7 Edge. In appearance, it is a bit similar to the A8, but the "stuffing" is different. Let's compare.

  9. Features: IP water proof

Phone specifications are different. In particular, there are differences in displays, processors, cameras. At the same time, the gadgets are in the same price segment, so the logical question is: which one to choose?

Processor comparison

The main component of any phone is the processor or chipset. Samsung uses components of its own design - Exynos. The name of the model becomes its class. The smartphones in question are used:

  1. Exynos 8890 - in the Galaxy S7.
  2. Exynos 7885 - in the Galaxy A8.

By the names it is clear that these are chipsets of different classes. The Exynos 8890 processor used in the Galaxy S7 with the Mali-T880 MP12 video accelerator is a TOP flagship chip featuring high performance and energy efficiency at the same time. It is made according to the 14-nm process technology and received 8 cores: 4 energy-efficient Cortex-A53 blocks operating by default (the cluster is designed to save energy). Another cluster - with powerful Samsung M1 cores at 2.6 GHz - is connected when necessary, when high power is required.

The built-in Mali-T880 GPU allows you to record Full HD content at 60 FPS and HD at 240 FPS, which is a clear advantage over the weaker processor in the Galaxy A8. The chip was introduced in 2016, and so far there is no task or application for the Android platform that would require the full power of this chipset. Its performance margin will last for the next couple of years.

The Galaxy A8 has a new mid-range chipset Exynos 7885. It is also made using 14nm technology and works on a dual-cluster architecture: 8 energy-efficient Cortex-A53 cores are divided into several blocks and work in duo: 4 × 2.2 GHz and 4 × 1.6 GHz.

The Mali G71 is responsible for the graphics - this graphics accelerator is weaker compared to the Mali-T880 (used in the Exynos 7885). It supports Full HD and Full HD+ displays and can record Full HD content at 30 FPS.

Which processor is better? is a subjective question. The flagship Exynos 8890 becomes the winner - it scores 114250 points in the Antutu benchmark (performance testing).

But Exynos 7885 shows a non-TOP result - 76898 points.

Camera Comparison

The phones have different cameras with different capabilities. We won't be boring to describe the dry parameters. Let's just show examples of photos taken on the cameras of both gadgets.

Let's start with the S7 - the phone received a cool rear module for its year of release, which is distinguished by a wide dynamic range and color reproduction. When photographing complex scenes (opposite the sun), color distortions are not excluded - halos and artifacts appear.

Autofocus works quickly and accurately under any conditions, noise is eliminated in strong light.

A feature of the camera is the ability to apply the Bokeh effect, which is rare for a single-module camera. However, the effect itself looks unnatural.

Blurring is present, but extremely sloppy.

Sample photos on Galaxy A8

The sensor of this "almost flagship" shows decent results only in strong light. There is a lot of noise in the room, which is the main drawback. Also, the camera lacks optical stabilization, which often causes blurring of the frame. The result is the following photos:

Difficult scenes are also difficult - there is a weak light sensitivity of the sensor and poor work with small details.

Subjectively: the camera of the flagship Galaxy S7 wins.

Other differences - pros and cons

The only significant advantage of the Galaxy A8 is the Infinity display with a larger diagonal. It's newer and features better, but the inexperienced user won't see the difference.

Pros of Galaxy A8:

  • The dual front camera can take pictures with the bokeh effect.
  • Payment technology through Samsung Pay.
  • Gear VR support.

Pros of the Galaxy S7:

  • Powerful processor and video accelerator.
  • The best rear camera (front is inferior), optical stabilization.
  • Supports wireless charging technology.
  • IP68 protection.

The choice is up to the user. Subjectively: Samsung Galaxy S7 is better thanks to more powerful hardware and a rear camera. The A8 is not a flagship, but a solid mid-range smartphone. This is a novelty on the market in 2018, but in terms of characteristics it does not surpass the flagship two years ago.

Comparing the two flagships of the same company Samsung Galaxy S7 vs Galaxy S7 Edge may seem ridiculous at first glance, but it will be very interesting to conduct.

In terms of electronic "stuffing" Samsung Galaxy S7 and Galaxy S7 Edge are very similar: the same processor, memory size, main and front cameras, a set of sensors, communication capabilities. These are actually "two brothers", but not twins.

However, if we talk about differences, then relatively Galaxy S7 vs Galaxy S7 Edge differ much more than last year's Galaxy S6 and Galaxy S6 Edge, in which the main and almost the only difference was the presence of a conceptual screen with rounded side edges.

As for new products, the base Samsung Galaxy S7, unlike the Galaxy S7 Edge, has a “classic” screen size of 5.1 inches for the Galaxy S line at a resolution of QHD 1440 x 2560 (pixel density is quite high - about 577 ppi).

Galaxy S7 Edge this time was released in phablet format (screen diagonal 5.5 inches at QHD resolution) inherits not so much Galaxy S6 Edge as Galaxy S6 Edge+. Apparently, Samsung analyzed the sales experience for 2015 and made the new “sevens” different niches.

Also, the Samsung Galaxy S7 differs from the Galaxy S7 Edge in a less capacious battery - 3000 mAh versus 3600 mAh.

Actually, this is where the technical differences between the Galaxy S7 and Galaxy S7 Edge end. However, there is another interesting point: despite the fact that options for 64 Gb of built-in flash memory will soon be available for both versions of the "seven", in different markets the Galaxy S7 64 Gb and Galaxy S7 Edge 64 Gb will be presented in countries the world is uneven.

Samsung Galaxy S7 vs Galaxy S7 Edge: what to choose in the end?

Due to the fact that the Galaxy S7 and Galaxy S7 Edge belong to different market niches, the main selection factor will not be the characteristics, but the cost and size of smartphones. At the moment, the official price of the Galaxy S7 in Russia is 49,990 rubles, Galaxy S7 Edge - 59,990 rubles.

The curved screen of the Samsung Galaxy S7 Edge is more of a fashion feature, it provides few practical advantages. However, for some, the desire to really stand out will be the deciding factor.

If you have a craving for the “classics”, then the Galaxy S7 will be your choice, and if you are not afraid of “shovel phones” and a capacious battery and a large screen are more important to you, then take the Galaxy S7 Edge.

You have probably already read a bunch of Samsung Galaxy S8 reviews and know literally everything about the smartphone. but How is the Samsung Galaxy S8 different from the Samsung Galaxy S7 Edge? Is it worth it to spend 50 thousand rubles on a new flagship or stop at the old one, saving a lot of money. Now I'll tell you everything.

Why am I comparing the new product with the Samsung Galaxy S7 Edge?

Firstly, the Galaxy S7, although a top-end gadget, looks sluggish against the background of its curved counterpart. A matter of taste, of course, but the Edge has a feature - a curved screen. And it brings the device to another technical level.

Secondly, it is the S7 Edge and the regular S8 that are more or less close in size. The Plus version is quite healthy and it is logical to compare it with some Note. But there is no actual device from this line now.

However, what are differences between Samsung Galaxy S8 and Galaxy S7 Edge? More on that in today's review.

The convenience of use

I say right away - there is no clear leader here. Every smartphone has pros and cons. Let everyone decide for himself what is more important for him, but for now I will list all the nuances of using both devices.

Are you narrower or wider?

Samsung Galaxy S7 Edge- a wide smartphone and it's a double-edged sword. On the one hand, "Edge" is not suitable for everyone, you need a wide enough palm to comfortably hold the device in your hand.

Against its backdrop Samsung Galaxy S8 is a fitness model. It is slim and chic in any hand. Perhaps even fans of the compact iPhone 7 with its 4.7-inch size will appreciate the excellent ergonomics.

However, the wide Edge has one important advantage. In the standard keyboard, I type text with almost no errors. The edge display is wider, the virtual buttons are bigger, so they're easier to hit.

Stuffing characters on the S8 is hell for me!

In S8, not only is the display narrower, but also the rounded edges cut off part of the usable area. As a result, typing is a real pain. By the way, with the keyboard from Google, my number of errors decreased, but the quality of typing still left much to be desired. Need to get used to. For a long time.

For watching movies, the eight is much more suitable. All Hollywood films are displayed with almost no black bars on top and bottom. And if you press the zoom button, the player stretches the picture to rounded corners as well. Complete delight!

Against this background, the S7 Edge looks like an old "Ruby" next to the plasma (S8).

Random taps on the S7 Edge screen are killing me. And if you are lying with your phone in bed, then it is simply impossible to use it normally.

The S8 has no such problems. No accidental clicks in any position. But why?

Firstly, the screen is not so strongly bent.

Secondly, some software algorithms work that can cut off accidental clicks.

Well, the last difference. SG S7 Edge even in 2017 looks very cheerful. Beautiful, curved and expensive design. And the SG S8 looks even cooler! Against its background, in general, all smartphones existing on the market are some kind of gramophones that are hopelessly behind by 3-4 years.

Frame

The S7 Edge has sharp side edges that slightly dig into the palm of your hand. The S8's sides are neatly rounded, so the feel is more pleasant. We write in plus.

The new product practically does not protrude the rear camera. This is good, as the lens edging will not peel off. While this is debatable, time must be given.

The figure eight is perceived thinner than its last year's competitor. And this despite the fact that the S7 Edge is actually thinner - by 0.7 mm!

Everyone scolds the location of the fingerprint scanner in the novelty. And they do it right.

At first I thought I'd get used to it, but after three days of use, I realized that I didn't. You have to turn the smartphone over every time to see where the sensor is, and only then apply your finger.

Perhaps this is the biggest inconvenience after typing on a narrow screen. This and that will take some getting used to. You buy a phone for 55 thousand rubles and kindly get used to it. Like this?

Moreover, I would not call the scanner smart and accurate. The finger must be applied vertically, in a horizontal position it is not always possible to unlock the device. In terms of unlocking speed, there is also nothing outstanding. Both generations of Samsung are far from the record holder.

The S8 has an oleophobic coating on all sides. It's very high quality, no issues. But the Edge was lucky with this only in front. Behind it is weak, prints are willingly collected here.

Olefobka is not only pleasant, it is also dangerous. Dropping the S8 is a piece of cake. Moreover! If you put the device on an uneven and smooth surface, then he will move out of it to meet the floor. You have to be very careful with this!

The seven have no such problems. Her body is more grippy.

Display

The difference is not only in resolution (2960 x 1440 pixels versus 2560 x 1440 or Quad HD+ versus Quad HD). The colors on the S8 are slightly softer, but also slightly more saturated. All this is noticeable only when comparing forehead to forehead. Individually, both panels are excellent. Super AMOLED, if anything.

If we compare the transmission of individual colors, then the S8 is already noticeably ahead of its predecessor. If the white of the S7 Edge gives off a slight metallic tone, then the younger rival has nothing of the sort.

The S8 has only one nuance - at some angles it is very pink. Not always noticeable, but the problem still remains and software patches do not help yet. I don't think they will help.

There is practically no inversion at extreme angles. In both devices, a slight greenish tint appears (“thanks” to AMOLED), in the seven it is a little more pronounced. However, this is not the same crime as it used to be.

PenTile is not in any device. Samsung got rid of it in its displays back in the days of the S6, so those who fear ghosts from the past can relax.

The Edge sidebar hasn't changed in terms of functionality. We saw the same thing in the seven. This is strange, because manufacturers often want to justify the purchase of a more recent device with new software chips. But not in this case.

Specifications and hardware differences

We compare the characteristics of both models in the table. So much clearer.

The new processor provides slightly more performance, but so far there is nowhere to apply it. The situation is actually quite funny. Every year, iron manufacturers raise the performance bar, but we don’t see normal, cool games.

There is World of Tanks Blitz, a port in the face of Grand Theft Auto: San Andreas, a couple of 3D shooters, but there is no high-quality breakthrough. Already 20 computing cores in the Mali-T71 graphics accelerator simply have nowhere to apply.

The thing is cool and works quite well, but you need good lighting and a number of extra gestures. That is, if the phone is lying on the table at a distance from you, you need to get up each time and stick your face into the field of view of the sensor, while still pressing a button to illuminate the screen. But why do we need so many unnecessary movements, when in the same “edge” the fingerprint sensor in front stretched out a finger and you’re done.

In general, the fingerprint scanner on the front side is convenient, aesthetically pleasing, harmonious and does not make the figure look fat. You don't need to invent anything.

Smartphone bundle

Performance

It seems that there are two crazy flagships on hand, but I would not say that interface animation always works reactively.

We set the maximum resolution for each and get barely noticeable, but still present lags. How can this be in a phone for 55,000 rubles? How?!

S7 Edge on the latest Android 7 is generally sad. Every time after unlocking, I seemed to pick him up from the bed at the wrong time, but forgot to wake him up. Well, sorry! The animation slows down, the lists scroll through with a frieze. In general, this is not the case.

Do you want perfect smoothness? I recommend changing the resolution for the S7 Edge to FHD, and lowering the resolution for the S8 to FHD+ (2220 x 1080). Believe me, the maximum values in ordinary life are not needed at all (only for VR). The picture looks perfect as it is. In addition, power consumption is reduced by at least one-fifth, and this, believe me, is critical for both of our devices.

In order to check the gaming performance, I launched my favorite "Tanks". There are practically no drawdowns on the new galaxy. Usually this is 58-60 FPS, but occasionally the frequency dropped to 54, not lower. S7 Edge can no longer boast of such power. In active scenes, the frequency sags to 31-34 FPS, but usually spins around 50 frames per second.

The situation in the benchmarks is as follows (on the left is the predecessor, on the right is the young and arrogant upstart "es-eight"):

By the way, depending on the resolution, the indicators of the "bench" are different. I don't know why, but at HD+ resolution, the results are the lowest.

And now the "parrots" that my "seven" can boast of. Lag in synthetics on the face.

Main camera

The new generation of flagships is getting new sensors. How could it be otherwise?

So, the Samsung Galaxy S8 and S8 + are equipped with either a Sony IMX333 or S5K2L2 matrix from System LSI on the back. The predecessor could boast either the Sony IMX260 module or the S5K2L1. In my "edge" was installed the latter option. And now to business!

daytime shooting

I looked at the photos as best I could. As a result, almost no differences were found.

The exception is color temperature. S7 Edge often takes the picture in the heat, and S8 makes it colder. Below are examples. On the left are shots taken on the S7 Edge, on the right from the S8 camera - from now on.

I will not write this down as a plus on the S8, because you can always set the white balance manually on the seven. Go ahead.

Macro

Here I expected to see a deeper and better photo processing from the S8: less noise, better detail, and so on. Did not work out.

It feels like I was comparing two photos from the same camera - no difference.

Bad light

This is where things get interesting. At least that's how it seemed to me. I took several shots, compared them with each other, cropped them and ... did not find any differences.

Do you see anything? Me not.

Night

When there is plenty of light, many smartphones shoot well and are more or less identical. But night shooting is a real test for any mobile device. And here the developers had to show all their skills in order to reduce noise, not turn the photo into a watercolor, and so on.

And yes, it happened! Finally I found the differences. The S8 captures images with a bit more detail and less noise.

True, the difference is so small that you can notice it only by comparing the cameras directly, with the same scenes and shooting conditions.

By the way, the protective glasses on both smartphones glare. And these highlights remain ultimately in the photographs.

Frankly, this is the first time I notice this on mobile devices.

By the way, we take the archive with all the originals from this link.

Front-camera

The front camera in the S8 has really been updated: autofocus has appeared and the resolution has grown: from 5 to 8 megapixels. All this economy is represented by the Sony IMX320 or ISOCELL S5K3H1 matrix, depending on the modification. At the same time, S7 Edge is equipped with a 5-megapixel module S5K4E6.

Of course, all this had a positive effect on the result. Now the pictures have become more detailed, and the background has received not much, but still a blur. Previously, everything was in focus and there was not much creativity in such a photo.

There is also a minus - the viewing angle of the "eight" has noticeably decreased.

Video filming

In terms of video recording, nothing has changed at all. Both smartphones still shoot in 4K resolution at 30 fps and at a high bit rate of 48 Mbps. An example is below.

With the Slow Motion mode, nothing interesting happened either. So far, there are only two devices on the market that pay special attention to this moment: (1080p at 120 FPS), and , which seriously slows down everything around - right up to 960 FPS.

Samsung S8 kindly agreed to give me David s Youtube channel Arstayl. Thank him for this!

The result was the following conclusion.

If there are no problems with money, and you don’t need to take a loan to buy a new product in the face of S8, then you need to take it. There is a whole bunch of all sorts of improved little things, but there are two significant pluses: unique for the market and very beautiful design, as well as pumped ergonomics in comparison with the same “edge”. All this is definitely worth to overpay 15 thousand rubles.

If 50 thousand rubles (plus or minus) is a little expensive for you, but you still want a top-end gadget, then don’t bother yourself. We take the Galaxy S7 Edge and enjoy life, since there is nothing truly revolutionary in the new product (except for the design). There is moisture protection, Samsung Pay works to its fullest, the cameras are identical in quality.

If you're not in the Samsung camp yet, then the S7 Edge and S8 are two great reasons to join. And no, no one paid me for advertising. It’s just that the first smartphone is a chic option in 2017 to get an uncompromising device for relatively little money. And the second is just a top top.

Personally, I care about only two competitors, about which little is known so far. The first is HTC U11 and what's wrong with it. The smartphone should come to me in the next month, so there will be a review. The second device is OnePlus 5, which has not yet been announced. What if the legendary Chinese manage to make a monster for 400-500 bucks? Then Samsung will have a worthy competitor for less money.
