We hope that Microsoft one day add to browser Edge more integrated on/off function. At the moment, for now, this is the only option but to completely turn off the sound on the computer or switch to using a different browser.

Let's say you don't need sound when you're browsing the Internet at home, at work, or in a public place. You secretly fear that whatever you click will open a new tab with an autoplay video or an audio announcement will start playing. You can automatically turn off the sound when you open a tab.

No one likes sudden, unexpected browsing noise, but some sites still have autoplay. Luckily, browser makers have added some easy ways to automatically mute when you open a tab in Chrome and Firefox.

If you are a Chrome user

Chrome has a built-in blacklist. If you want to mute certain sites (such as annoying autoplay videos), you can right-click on the site's tab and select Mute Site.

But if you want something a little more powerful, like muting all tabs by default and whitelisting them, you can do that starting with version 64, which came out in a stable build in January.

Click the main menu button (three vertical dots) in the top right corner, then "Settings". Click the Advanced button at the bottom of the screen.

In the "Privacy and Security" section, click "Content Settings". Click Sound.

The default setting for "Allow Sites to Play Sounds" allows you to play sound from every site on the Internet, whether you've visited it or not. To change this, click on the switch. If you really want to turn off all sound, you can add exceptions to this rule by clicking "Add" next to the "Allow" section.

But most users will probably prefer to enable the main option and add sites to the Silent list. Just enter any URL, then click "Add".

Now, when you visit this site or open a new tab via a link, all audio (including autoplay videos) will be muted. Enjoy the silence.

If you are a Firefox user

At the time of writing, Firefox has released version 58 of Quantum. It doesn't have the same built-in mute options as the latest version of Chrome, but there's an extension you can use that's pretty much the same. , then click Add to Firefox, then Add in the pop-up window.

Then click the main menu button, the three horizontal bars, in the top right corner of the window. Click Add-ons.

In the "MuteLinks" section, click "Settings".

Scroll down to the section labeled Blacklist sites. To add a site that you want to permanently mute, click the blue "+" sign. Then click the pencil icon and enter the URL of the site you want to mute.

You can add as many sites as you like. Now whenever you visit them from the URL bar or any link, they will automatically mute any video or background music.

Alternatively, if you want every site to mute except the ones you visit the most, click "Mute by default". You can add exclusions by clicking "+" under "Whitelist sites", then click on the pencil icon and add the URL manually, just like a blacklist.

Turning sound on and off in the browser is a simple action that everyone has probably encountered. For example, you urgently need to turn off the sound to answer a phone call, or you are in a situation where it is impossible to view pages with the sound turned on. Instead of turning off the sound at the start of each video you watch, you can radically solve the problem - turn off the sound in the browser. The developers' decisions for each browser turned out to be different, so it's worth considering them separately. In the end, let's try to summarize what we managed to find out and find the pros and cons of each solution.

Sound settings in the most popular browsers

How to enable or disable sound in the Yandex browser

Yandex Browser does not remind you of the existence of sound in any way while you are on pages where there is no content with sound. You will not find any special settings set in advance. The audio control icon appears the moment you land on a page where it is present in the content. On the tab of such a page, on the right, next to its name, an icon with a sound icon (horn) immediately appears. When the mouse approaches, the icon is highlighted. Sound control is simple - click on it if you want to turn off the sound. The "sound" icon will be crossed out. To turn on the sound, click again.

How to enable mute in Google Chrome browser

Chrome suggests the ability to enable / disable the sound in the settings. Finding the right setting is not easy, but anything is possible. So, from the browser menu (three vertical dots on the right, in the upper part of the control panel), select the “Settings” section, write “sound” in the search box, get a link to “Content Settings”. You can also go straight to the "Content Settings" if you know where to look for them. They are located in the "Additional" settings, the link to which is at the bottom of the general list of settings. Among other numerous content settings, we find “Sound”, and then you can enable or disable its playback, while making exceptions from the general set rule for individual sites. The task is not solved as quickly as in Yandex Browser, but fundamentally. But clicking on the sound icon on the page tab in the Chrome browser is useless. It won't affect anything.

How to enable mute in Mozilla Firefox browser

Here again, everything is decided quickly and situationally, as in Yandex Browser. Only the icon with the “sound” icon will be located to the left of the page name on its tab and it is clearly visible only if you hover over this place with the mouse cursor. And when the cursor is far away, you can see something else instead. For example, the favicon of the page you are viewing. Move the mouse, click on the "sound" icon and turn it on or off as needed.

In each browser, the ability to mute the sound is solved in its own way. In Mozilla, for example, you need to imagine in advance where to move the mouse cursor in order to be able to get to control it. In other cases, control is obvious.

if it is important for you to be able to quickly turn on / off the sound, use Mozilla or Yandex Browser. Click on the appropriate icon and you're done. Minus, the setting cannot be checked in advance. In what state it is, it turns out only when the page is launched; if the speed of turning the sound on and off is not critical, use Chrome. Here you can leave the sound on your favorite pages, turn it off on those where you do not want to hear it.

And finally, sound playback can also be controlled using the Windows panel. In the lower right part of the screen there is an icon that allows you to not only enable/disable the sound, but also adjust its volume. By the way, be sure to check that the sound is enabled at the Windows level before managing it in the browser. If you don't see any results from the browser's audio controls, it might just be turned off. By and large, it can be more convenient to control sound through the Windows panel than through the “sound” icons that can be found in Mozilla and Yandex Browser. Perhaps, only Chrome developers approached the solution of the problem thoroughly, offering the user opportunities that he did not initially have without the settings of the browser itself.

No sound in the browser what to do

Modern desktop web browsers—Google Chrome, Mozilla Firefox, and Apple Safari—allow you to mute individual browser tabs with just a few clicks. Even Microsoft Edge allows you to mute the browser tab, though Microsoft can make it a lot easier.

This is useful if a tab starts playing music or video and you want to temporarily mute it. In most cases, this requires a click or two.

Google Chrome

To mute a browser tab in Google Chrome, simply click on the speaker icon that appears on the tab playing audio. You will see a line through it and the tab should be silent.

If that doesn't work, then open the Chrome flags page. To do this, enter in the address bar chrome://flags/ and press Enter. Here, find the "Tab audio muting UI control" flag and enable it.

You can also right-click on a tab and select Mute Site, which will mute any future tabs from that site that open in the future.

Mozilla Firefox

To mute the sound in a browser tab in Firefox, right-click on the tab and select Mute Tab Sound. Just like in Chrome, you will see a crossed-out speaker icon to the left of the "x" button in the browser tab.

Just like Chrome, it's easy to find which browser tabs are playing audio, just look for the speaker icon. You can also pre-mute a tab before it plays audio. You can also simply left click on the speaker icon to turn the sound on and off for that tab.

Apple Safari

In Safari on Mac, you can mute a tab in several ways. While the currently active tab is playing sound, a speaker icon will appear in the Safari Preferences panel. Click on it to turn the sound on and off for the tab.

You can also right-click on any tab and select "Mute Tab" or simply left-click on the speaker icon that appears on the right side of the tab.

Microsoft Edge

Microsoft Edge also displays a speaker icon on browser tabs when that tab is playing audio. However, there is no option to mute a tab from Edge.

However, there is a way to disable audio on individual Edge browser tabs. To do this, right-click on the speaker icon in the notification area at the bottom right corner of the screen and select "Open Volume Mixer".

Scroll to the right in the Volume Mixer window and find the Edge browser tab playing audio. Various browser tabs will be displayed here. Click the speaker icon below the page title to turn off the sound.

To unmute a tab, you need to close and reopen the browser tab or go back here and click on the speaker icon again.

Hopefully Microsoft will add a more mute tab feature to Microsoft Edge. At the moment, this is the only option other than muting the computer or switching to a different browser.

In this article, we'll show you how to mute a tab or Microsoft Edge browser.

If you have used the Mozilla Firefox or Google Chrome browser before, you probably know that these browsers display a speaker icon on tabs that play audio or video. And these browsers also allow you to turn off tabs by clicking on the speaker volume.

Microsoft Edge also displays a speaker icon on tabs that play audio/video. Unfortunately, Microsoft Edge doesn't offer to disable specific tabs or all open tabs.

There is currently no extension to help you quickly mute the sound in a Microsoft Edge browser tab. However, Windows 10 now allows you to turn off tabs in the Edge browser using the Volume Mixer.

With the Windows 10 Fall Creators Update (v1709), Microsoft has updated the Volume Mixer to support modern apps like Edge. Before that, we had to use third-party apps like EarTrumpet to adjust the volume levels of individual apps.

The Volume Mixer has been updated to accommodate the Edge browser. The best part is that if multiple Edge browser tabs are producing sound, then the Volume Mixer will display all the tabs (with their names) that are playing sound, so you can easily mute the sound on any given tab.

Volume Mixer is a built-in feature that allows you to control the volume level of each of your applications and programs.

Keep in mind that the Edge browser is now available for both iOS and Android, but there is no way to mute a tab in the smartphone version.
