The Aero line is familiar to us. Some of her models make up the Aero 5.1 kit, which has won awards in the £1500-2500 category for two consecutive years. Aero 2 bookshelf speakers are not included in this package, but can be purchased separately. As a result, the purity, integration of the sound is increased and its angular polar pattern is expanded.

A voluminous and authentic music scene fills the room effortlessly. The Aero 2 has a very tight and confident sound that doesn't require it to be mounted close to a wall. On the contrary, these speakers prefer to be 30 centimeters from it - this slightly improves the balance and stereo panorama. Epic orchestral pieces like John Williams' Star Wars soundtrack's Duel of the Fates are very much to Aero's liking: choral chants, frantic strings and dominating horns show scale, persuasiveness and dynamics. And their energy and rhythmic drive will make you dance to the sounds of Michael Jackson's Bad album.

However, the expressiveness of vocals is not among the main advantages of the speakers; They convey the emotions in Jackson's voice in the song I Just Can't Stop Loving not at all as successfully as Wharfedale Diamond 220. Bass is elastic and precise, treble is sonorous and clear, the middle range is clear and expressive. The quality of speakers in this category is often determined by the development of dynamics, and DALI will not lose face: their mobility ensures smooth piano sound in Within. However, their dynamics are a little lacking in expressiveness, especially in quiet fragments, as well as scale; Q Acoustic and Wharfedale are stronger in this respect.

Nevertheless, Zensor 1 deserves to keep its place in the system even after updating its other components. At the same time, components from higher price categories - the Arcam A19 FMJ amplifier ($1200) and the Marantz CD6005 CD player ($700) - play just fine with them.

When a renowned hi-fi manufacturer announces a series of inexpensive speakers, the news sounds sweeter than any music. The BR (Bronze Reference) series was just such a budget Monitor Audio line; it was replaced in 2010 by the slightly more expensive BX series. The composition Louder Than Words by Pink Floyd is very much to the liking of these speakers; the voices of the instruments differ in fullness and texture, the vocals are spelled out in exceptional detail. High-quality mids are combined with clean, refined highs and tight and full-blooded basses. 2020i are not afraid of a decisive attack and willingly bite into juicy guitar riffs, combining enthusiasm and persuasiveness with poise and control. It's amazing how big and powerful the sound can be from just 32cm high speakers. The Diamond 220's sound becomes tighter and more convincing when placed close to or next to a wall: in open spaces it loses some confidence, basses become less clear, and voices less dense. By the way, about the voices: their clean and frank delivery is very expressive, Eminem's jerky rap in the Relapse album is conveyed flawlessly. The integration of all components of the sound is excellent.

It is the high meticulousness and dynamic talents of the Diamond 220 that set them apart from the competition. All the instruments in Grieg's Piano Concerto demonstrate subtle elaboration and subtle variations; piano melodies are smooth and eloquent, violins are textured. Excellent microdynamics helps to follow the development of the composition. These speakers perfectly convey tension and richness in moments when the orchestra enters especially powerfully.

Talented Diamond 220 will be an adornment of any system of primary and secondary price range. Undoubtedly, this is one of the most brilliant representatives of the category of Hi-Fi products under $500.

Summing up

Winner Wharfedale Diamond 220 $280

With great sound, versatility and price, the Wharfedale Diamond 220 defended their title in a highly competitive environment.

The budget speaker market is so dynamic, and the competition is so high, that the leaders have to regularly confirm their positions. A clear example of this is the change in status of the DALI Zensor 1. Even the arrival of the even more talented Q Acoustics 2020i in 2012 did not lower their rating, but now the Zensor 1 has lost a fifth star due to the Wharfedale Diamond 220. We still like DALI very much, despite even though they now cost $50 more than the current test winners. Listening to Zensor 1 is extremely pleasant: they are fast and musical, they perfectly manage to convey rhythmic structures. In addition, they are best suited for installation against a wall.

On the other hand, the respected Q Acoustics maintained their excellent score. You won't find anything better for $400. But is it worth spending that much when there is a Wharfedale model? Definitely not; however, the petite 2020i doesn't get any worse - they have a very open, energetic and dynamic character and will sound great from anywhere in the room.

A few words about the winners. The Wharfedale pair have managed to maintain the lead they fought so hard for during the awards season. The Diamond 220 is the perfect example of budget acoustics: they have an extremely informative, balanced, but at the same time musical sound that will delight you for many years with a micro system or with a set of good individual components. Not only equal partners, but models twice and even three times as expensive as Wharfedale play wonderfully with them. Add to them cables with a transparent character and good stands - and you will be proud of the purchase.

Among the models that we have not met before, there are both very good and rather average ones. Monitor Audio MR2 and Cambridge Audio Aero 2 can be called the best among the rest; both of them get good grades. MR2 is another great new product from the British company; its pluses include accuracy and scale, and its minuses - insufficient elaboration of HF. The Aero 2 confirmed our favorable impressions of the Aero line; they will especially appeal to fans of large-scale and dynamic sound. But, like DALI, they cannot boast the same level of detail and work out the subtleties of dynamics as successfully as the leaders in the category.

And finally, we have Polk TSx220B. They have a solid, sturdy construction and about the same sound character. Its largeness and high-quality bass will appeal to many, but these speakers lack the meticulousness and enthusiasm for playing music. Due to the fact that listening to Polk is not as interesting as other models, they receive the minimum mark in this competition.

In most of our tests, applicants are divided into two categories: those for which it is quite possible to do without, and those for which we do not have enough enthusiastic words. Wharfedale deservedly fall into the second.

How to buy a pair of new speakers

Buying acoustics is not as easy as it seems. It's not just about choosing the best-sounding speakers or the best finishes and sizes for your apartment.

Not all speakers are equally whimsical, but some models play better against the wall, while others play better in open space; this is worth considering if your room does not have much space.

It is important to pay attention not only to other components of the system, but also to accessories. High-quality cables and speaker stands must be budgeted in advance. We call these speakers bookshelf, but they still sound much better on special stands.
