Cellular communication and Internet in Montenegro. Mobile operators and the Internet in Montenegro Internet in Montenegro for tourists

Local SIM cards for tourists in Montenegro cost quite reasonable money. For only 10 euros you can get a card for 10 GB of mobile internet.

Finding Montenegrin SIM cards for tourists is not so easy. It is best to purchase them immediately at the airport at the postal kiosk.

In Budva, cards are sold in covered stalls and newsstands or at the company's office, but in the high season there is always a queue. You have to go and ask the locals. There is a Telenor office in the city center where you can buy such cards. But even on the official website of the company, the exact address is not indicated 🙂

If you're lucky, you can use the services of the M-Tel operator. In 2019, they offer excellent internet rates:

  • 500 GB for 15 days for 5 euros
  • 1000 GB in 30 days for 10 euros

Using such an amount of Internet is unrealistic, but if you distribute the phone to the whole family and sit together on Youtube, then you can try 🙂

On any trips abroad, you want communication to be of high quality and inexpensive. Roaming in Montenegro will be expensive. It is most profitable to buy a SIM card from a local operator and connect a suitable package.

    Local operators

Montenegro is served by three local operators:

    1. Telenor
    2. Crnogorski Telekom (T-Mobile)
    3. M:Tel

The coverage for all is equally decent: the signal will be stable almost throughout Montenegro, excluding places with difficult terrain (deep canyons, places surrounded on all sides by mountains).

If you are in the mountains and your phone does not pick up, do not worry. It is enough to drive a couple of kilometers and the connection will be established again.

Communication and 3G Internet you will have almost throughout the country with any operator.

All three operators also offer 4G/LTE, and they have it, but the coverage is much less. If you are going to spend your holidays mainly in large cities, then you will have 4G.

Do I need a local SIM card if I have a European one? In Montenegro, roaming rates on European SIM cards are not regulated and may surprise you "suddenly" being higher than you thought. So a local SIM is needed.

If, while relaxing in Montenegro, you do not want to spend a fortune on talking with loved ones, this article is for you. Gathered information about mobile communications for tourists Oleg Obukhov.

I see and read how tourists are straining with SIM cards of Montenegrin operators and connecting packages. In the review, I will consider two operators: T-Mobile and M: tel.

    Montenegrin operator T-Mobile
You buy a SIM card for 3€ with a balance of 3€. Ideally, it should be registered in your name, while filling out the registration sheet at the point of sale does not guarantee that it (the sheet) will reach the operator's office.

During the season, operators block unregistered numbers after 15 days from the start of use. Hence the conclusion - rest for 15 days or less, do not pay attention. More - contact the T-com office in your city and fill out the registration form.

A card in a standard format with a notch for micro-sim. You need a nano - cut it yourself or go to a place where they sell and repair mobile phones.

The T-Mobile card is protected by a pin code (I hope you are familiar with this technology). After installing the card in your phone, first turn off the data transfer. This is important before the end of the setup, because. smart phone loads a lot of data background and can instantly spend the balance of the card.

You can top up the balance after activating the card in terminals and newsstands. This is called "electronic dopuna". Minimum amount allowances are now 2 euros.

So, put the card, entered the pin code, registered the card on the network. To activate, make one call (you can without a connection) or send an SMS. That's it, the map is active and ready to be configured.

Balance check *111#. This USSD command is called "Super-menu" and with its help you can see your tariff, change it, connect packages.

Before activating the options, be sure to turn off the data transfer, without the connected options, it is the Internet traffic that consumes funds. Then choose any of the suggested options. You can choose any two of the three. Connecting one option for the first time is free.

In my opinion, the Internet option (3) is relevant, where for 2.90 € you get 1.5 GB of traffic for 7 days. On the voice calls funds are spent less and you can use instant messengers.

To connect, you need to use the ussd menu *111# or send an SMS with the text SURF (for option 3) to the number 1467. To connect other options, send an SMS MI or SVI to the same number.

Only after setting up the package, enable data transfer on your phone. Also, do not forget to monitor the rest of the traffic and the expiration of the package.

APN settings for Internet access in the photo. Password 38267.

For those who cannot imagine rest without the Internet, there are also sets for sale: a usb modem and a SIM card with a certain amount of GB of Internet. Not a bad alternative to ADSL, in principle.

T-Mobile advantages: stable network, the best quality Internet in CHG and good coverage in the northern regions of Montenegro.

    Montenegrin operatorM:tel
In terms of registration, account replenishment, the rules are exactly the same as for T-Mobile, so read the first part.

M: tel-ovsky sim cards come across to me without a pin code. I don’t know if this is 100% or not, but, in general, you will figure it out. Just like with a competitor, after registering on the network (call or message to any number) until the end of the settings, turn off Internet access in order to keep your credit on your account.

Since June 2016, the Mtel operator has introduced new conditions for the MGO Tourist prepaid tariff. Now a SIM card costs 5€, and in this package you get 500MB of internet already included and 2€ on your balance for voice and SMS.

The Internet package is valid for 3 days, but for each next top-up (minimum 2€), the user receives another 300MB for 3 days. These 300MB are activated at midnight, after the account is replenished. And you can freely spend the replenished balance on SMS and voice calls. If you have Internet enabled on your smartphone, then an unlimited package must be connected, otherwise your money will turn into a pumpkin at midnight.

To activate the above service, you need to send an SMS turist to 14555 or activate *105# in the ussd menu and only after activation (!) turn on the data transfer service on your phone.

This tariff also provides 50% discounts on voice calls to countries from which the bulk of tourists come. The service is activated via the ussd menu *105#.

Features of M:tel: there are always cheap roaming offers for Serbia if you plan to travel there, a good coverage area on the coast. Of the minuses: the northern part of Montenegro is poorly covered and in the season there is a problem with mobile Internet on the coast.

Let's talk about the features cellular communication in Montenegro, interesting tariffs. How to save on mobile Internet and negotiations within the country.

At the height of the season, there are more tourists in Montenegro than local residents. but special offers for travelers in the mobile market is almost non-existent. This is due to the fact that the country is very small, and most of the guests come from the republics of the former Yugoslavia - for them there are just interesting options in Montenegro. But Russians who want to save money will most likely have to forget about roaming and use Skype.

Starter packs are sold almost everywhere in cities: in kiosks, shops and supermarkets, but there is one caveat. Often in such places they do not ask for documents, but the number still needs to be officially registered.

To do this, you need a passport and a communication salon. If this is not done, then in five to seven days the SIM card will stop working. Therefore, it makes sense to immediately contact the point of sale of the selected operator, since they are also common.

    Popular excursions in Montenegro

The most interesting excursions are routes from local residents to Tripster. It is always interesting to start with (during the acquaintance you can see all the iconic places, outline the routes of future walks). Immediately after that, go out of town, admire - a stunningly beautiful trip inland (more than 12 hours).

    Communication in Montenegro: Telenor

The only operator in the country that boasts almost two hundred base stations. For a small state, even located mainly in the mountains, this is enough to cover cities, beaches, main roads, tunnels.

That is, from a technical point of view, Telenor is doing just fine. But there is a problem: the operator does not indulge in a variety of packages. In fact, he offers to pay for specific services. A starting SIM card will cost 5 euros, a call within Montenegro will cost 0.1999 €, SMS - 0.0499 €.

The Internet will have to be purchased separately and the cost is rather big: 500 MB will pull on 3.51 €, 1 GB - 4.42 €, and 10 GB - 10.12 €.

Standard roaming price for outgoing calls to the first zone, which includes Russia - 1.21 €, for incoming calls - 0.5999 €. But especially for those who often call abroad, the company has developed special service"Dodaj međunarodne pozive". For 2.02 € per month you can call Russia for 0.182 € / minute.

    Communication in Montenegro: T-Mobile (Telekom)

The operator has been owned by the Deutsche Telekom Group since 2005. It serves 360,000 customers, which is excellent coverage for a city with a population of less than 700,000. In addition, he developed quite interesting tariffs. You can buy a SIM card for 5 €, of which only 1 € will go to your account.

The line of packages is focused mainly on local residents. Tourists can be advised to pay attention to the basic options with prepayment. For example, "MIX MREŽA 15" for 5 €, valid for 15 days and giving 500 minutes, 500 SMS and 1 GB of traffic.

Taking into account the rather expensive roaming, and an outgoing call will cost 2.37 € per minute, you may have to purchase Internet packages separately. For example, "INTERNET 15" with 5 GB costs only 3.9 €.

Some like "INTERNET MONSTER" for 15 days for the same 3.90 €. The peculiarity is that from 8 pm to 8 am 10 GB is provided, and during the day - another 2 GB.

    Local mobile operator M:Tel

Mountains are not a hindrance to cellular communication in Montenegro

The youngest and only provider with local roots. It occupies about a quarter of the market, but it competes quite confidently with other players. He manages to stay on the market mainly thanks to the tariff policy for customers who prefer prepayment. The main attraction of M:Tel is that the starter packages along with the SIM card offer certain bonuses.

For example, "Hello Net" for 5 € gives 1 € to the account and 4 GB of traffic, "MRAK" - unlimited calls and Internet at night (from 20:00 to 8:00) and 100 minutes on all networks.

There is also a special travel package "m:tel TURIST", but its bonuses are rather weak. When connected, the user receives 100 GB, which must be used up in 7 days, as well as free Facebook and Twitter.

However, you need to be careful when choosing a tariff. The fact is that the cost of services at the end of the provided minutes may be different. For example, for "MRAK" one minute of conversation will cost 0.152 €, and calls to all international destinations - 0.864 €. But for "m:tel TURIST" prices are higher: 0.224 € and 0.996 €, respectively.

Cards from Drimsim - profitable or not

All mobile operators in Montenegro have a rather confusing billing system. Against their background, the universal attracts tourists with its simplicity. It is enough for a traveler to know that 10 GB of traffic will cost 15.36 €, a call to Russia - 0.9 € per minute, within the country outgoing to mobile numbers- 1.2 €, and to landlines - 0.85 €.

Obviously, the price of roaming and traffic from the company is quite competitive. But conversations within the country are unreasonably expensive. But if you plan, first of all, to use the Internet, and the Drimsim card is already available, then this option is quite attractive.

Specially buying it for 10 € for just one trip does not make sense.

    Flights from Moscow to Tivat

Aeroflot flies to the Montenegrin airport once a day, once a week Pobeda and S7, 3-4 times a week Montenegro Airlines (flights No. 611, 631). Cost - from 3 300 rubles. one way. Travel time is about three hours.
