How to mark page number in Word. How to put pagination in Word

Students and people who work a lot with text often have to create large documents. In order not to get lost in the content and not to confuse the printed pages, they must be numbered.

Fortunately, this process takes a little time and does not require special skills. In addition, the algorithm of actions for pagination does not depend on the version of the office program installed on your computer: in Office 2007, and in 2010, and in 2016, the numbering process consists of the same steps.

We'll show you how to number pages in Word, as well as the different numbering options. All examples in this article are made in Microsoft Word 2010.

How to Number Pages in Word

Create a document in Word or open an existing one. In the top menu, go to the "Insert" tab. In the "Headers and Footers" section, click on the "Page Number" line.

In the drop-down list, you will see four options for the location of the page number: at the top, at the bottom, in the margins, or in the current position - where the cursor is currently located. The design of many official documents, such as theses, is regulated by GOST, so the choice of the position of page numbers should not confuse you. As a rule, the page number is put down in the footer.

After you select the position of the number, the program will number all pages, starting from the first, and the "Working with Headers and Footers" tab will open in the top menu.

To customize the appearance of the number, go to the "Page Number" - "Page Number Format" section.

In this window, you can select the alphabetic or numeric format of the number, as well as set the page from which the numbering of the document will begin. For example, if you enter the number 2 in the "start with" field, then the first page of the document will receive the second number.

If your document has numbered sections, you can include the chapter number in the pagination. If you select an em dash as the delimiter, the number format will be "X - Y", where X is the chapter number and Y is the page number.

How not to number the first page in Word

The first page, as a rule, is occupied by the title page, which cannot be numbered. To avoid putting a number on the first page, do the following:

  • Double click on the header containing the page number. The Header and Footer Tools panel will appear in the top menu.
  • In the "Options" tab, check the box next to the "Special header and footer for the first page" function. Now the title page will not be numbered.

By the way, we talked about how to start numbering from any page of the document.

One of the most popular programs for working with texts is considered to be Microsoft Word, which users simply call Word. A wide variety of functions allows you to solve very different tasks that relate to the typesetting and formatting of text documents. A simple intuitive menu makes work possible for people of any age and level of knowledge.

Very often, when typing a document with several pages, users are faced with a seemingly simple task - pagination. But not everyone can immediately find the desired function, despite the fact that this is quite simple to do. Also, not everyone can immediately figure out how to arrange the page number according to any special requirements for the document, which happens quite often. Let's figure out how to number pages in Word of different versions.

Let's first consider how to number pages in Word 2003, since this version of the program is still quite popular and is used by a large number of users.

After starting the program, go to the "Insert" tab and then select "Page Numbers" from the drop-down list.

In the window that appears, you can specify the numbering parameters:

  • position - top or bottom;
  • alignment - left, right, center, inside, outside.

It is also possible to specify the format of the page number, namely, to number with numbers or letters, from which page to start numbering.

Page numbering in Word 2007, 2010, 2013

The Word version later than 2007 has a very thoughtful and user-friendly interface. It is designed in such a way that a huge number of functions are logically distributed across several tabs. In order to start numbering pages, you need to go to the "Insert" tab.

Here you need to click on the line "Page number", after which in the drop-down menu you can adjust the location of the page number (at the top of the page, at the bottom or in the margins).

In the same menu there is a line "Format of page numbers", by selecting which you can set the page number from which the numbering will begin.

To do this, you need to put a marker on the bottom displayed line (“start”) and enter in the box the number with which the numbering of the document should begin.

Another problem that Word users often face is pagination without a title page. This means that you need to number the pages starting not from the first page (the title page), but from the next one, while the numbering should start from two, because the cover is considered the first page.

This is quite simple to do - you first need to put down the page number of the document as usual, after which each of the pages will be numbered. Now turn off the numbering of the title page.

To do this, from the "Insert" tab, go to the "Page Layout" tab. A little to the left of the center of the menu will be the "Page Setup" line, next to which there will be a small button in the form of a gray square with a cross. By clicking on this button, the user will be able to see the “Page Setup” window in front of him, where he needs to check the box next to the line “Distinguish first page headers and footers”.

After the actions taken, the number on the title page will disappear without violating the general page numbering of the document.

We don't use page numbering very often in Word. And maybe I would never have needed it if I hadn't started writing my book. And here the numbering is simply necessary. It is also necessary when writing a thesis or term paper.

Yes, and in a simple essay, it also does not hurt. Let's not delay the matter indefinitely, let's try to number the pages right now. The first thing to do is in the Word itself (Word) find the line "Insert" and click on it.

After this action, such a panel will open in front of us, where we just need to find this row, under which there is the signature “Footers and Footers”. In this row of three lines, we are interested in the most recent “Page Number”.
After that, you need to click on this line with the mouse. When this action is completed, a new panel will appear in front of us again.
Here we see exactly how the numbers will be located. Let's choose some example and look at the result.
And this is what we got on the Word sheet itself (Word)
Everything, the sheet is numbered. In the same way, all other pages of your document will be numbered from the very first to the very last. But here, too, there is one "but". Where did you see the document starting from the page under the number 1? That's right, there is practically no such thing anywhere. Because number 1 is the title page. And we don't number it. And what about then? Everything is simple. In order to solve this problem, you need to click on this line "Format page numbers"
And we have this image in front of us:
What do we need here? Just one thing - "Page number" and "Start at". Here you just need to put the number with which the book, dissertation or essay begins.
Everything, the numbering is put down as it should be. Now let's try to sort out this question. When we carry out all these actions, we get such a strip.
How to remove it? Everything is very simple. To do this, click on the box "Close header and footer window" Where to look for it? But here.
After this action, we will have only one numbering.

How to number pages in Word, for example, with Roman numerals or even letters? Oh, and that's not a problem! Numbering pages in Word this way is very simple. Again we display this window "Page number format" and in the line "number format" select Roman numerals.
And here's what we got:
Well, how can you completely remove the entire numbering? And this problem is very easy to solve. To do this, click in the column of footers "Delete numbers".
So, easy and simple, and most importantly, understandable to everyone, we have solved one of the main problems of Word users - how to number pages. I think now you will definitely not have any difficulties with this!

Pagination in a Word for a regular document is very simple, but when it becomes necessary to put page numbers in your own headers or footers or double pagination, then some people start to feel sad.

In fact, there is nothing complicated. I propose to do a little practical work, after which it will become more fun and easier for you to work.

Simple pagination

To begin with, a few words about how to number pages in a Word for those who are faced with this for the first time:

In the top menu bar, go Insert → Page Number → Top of Page → Simple Number 1

Of course, you can choose absolutely any arrangement and style of pagination, my choice is due to the compactness of the picture. That's all, let's go further to get acquainted with more interesting things.

Page numbers in headers and footers

The fact is that page numbers in word are inserted into headers and footers, and if you have your own, the previous method will not work, because. everything in the document will become sloppy.

Healthy. If you swim in the concepts of headers and footers and sections in word, then I strongly recommend that you read the articles: “Headers and footers in the Word” (see) and “Sections in the Word” (see).

How to number pages in word

So, let's get started and do everything in order:

1. Download the prepared file for practical work.

2. We switch to the mode of editing the header of the first page of the content (difficult, see).

3. Place the cursor in the rectangle in the upper right corner and press the keyboard shortcut Ctrl+F9, after which it will appear { } .

4. In these brackets, write or copy the code PAGE .

5. Press keyboard shortcut Alt+F9, this will display the value of the code.

6. Exit the header editing mode (if you find it difficult, see).

7. Since, in our example, a special header for the first page, it is necessary to do this for subsequent pages of content. Go to the second page and do it.

8. The numbering was set, but as a rule it does not start from the first page. Switch to the first page header editing mode and highlight the page number by going to the top menu ribbon Insert → Page Number → Format Page Numbers… and specify that page numbering start at 4.

Thus, through numbering is affixed for subsequent sections of the explanatory note and applications. For simplicity, you can copy the page number of the content, in the edit mode of the header and footer, and paste it into subsequent sections.

Double pagination in Word

So, we figured out the end-to-end pagination in the Word, but you also need to put the page numbers of each section separately for the content, notes and applications.

Let's step by step, from simple to complex, slowly continue:

9. Switch to the edit mode for the footer of the second page of content and place the cursor in the lower right corner in the appropriate place.

10. Paste the code into this cell (=(page)-3) similarly, creating curly braces with a keyboard shortcut Ctrl+F9. Page number 2 was obtained by decreasing the value of the current page by 3, as can be seen from the code.

You can check the result by adding a content page.

Pagination in word for pros

The previous method can also be used to number subsequent internal pages of sections, but the problem is that you will constantly have to control the number of the last page of the previous section. Damn, I would probably rest here, my head starts to warm up.

Let's do it this way, if in this example you have the second page of the explanatory note section 7, then you will have to get the internal numbering of the second page like this (=(page)-5), if the number of pages of content increases by one, then the number of the second page of the note will be 8, and the inner one will have to be written as (=(page)-6) .

You can automate this too, we do it sequentially, and everything will become clear along the way:

11. Turn on the visibility of hidden characters by pressing the corresponding button on the main tab of the top menu, and select the entire line

::::::::Section break (from next page):::::::::

This inscription must be on a separate line, otherwise move it by placing the cursor at the beginning and press Enter. To select, move the cursor from the beginning to the end of the points, or click opposite the line beyond the sheet space.

12. With a selected line in the top menu Insert → Bookmark in the "Bookmark" window, write r1(analogy section 1, in Latin without spaces), put "Hidden bookmarks" and click "Add".

13. Go to editing the footer of the second page of the explanatory note and paste the code into the page number cell (=(page)-(pageRef r1) .

It should be interpreted as follows: code (page) indicates the page number, in our case 7, and (pageRef r1) the page number with a cross-reference created on the section break that is on page 5, so the inner page number is calculated as the page number minus the last page number of the previous section, i.e. 7-5=2; 8-5=3; 9-5=4 etc.

14. Do the same for the applications section yourself by adding a bookmark r2 at the section break at the end of the explanatory note.

Final touch on pagination

Go sequentially to the first page of each section, and in the cell under the inscription "Sheets" in the lower right corner, put the code (SectionPages). This code will display the total number of pages in the section. If you need to display the total number of pages in the document, insert the code (NUMPAGES) .

It happens that word slows down and does not always update the fields with codes, to force the update, press the keyboard shortcut twice Alt+F9.

I remind you that parentheses for inserting code are called by the combination Crtl+F9, and calling the values Alt+F9.

Bonus. Well, in the end, if there were difficulties, you can download the document with the finished result by clicking .

Interesting. How to make an automatic table of contents word read.
