Wifi adapter ralink chipset. Ralink adapters: we distribute Wi-Fi

Wireless adapter WiFi Models Ralink RT5370 is a highly specialized device. The main area of its use is also TVs with support for the Smart TV function. But it can also be used as part of personal computer. This material will be devoted to its possibilities.

Purpose of the wireless adapter. Equipment

Ralink RT5370 discrete network card is designed to create wireless connection using a Wi-Fi signal.

Most often it is installed in USB port satellite receivers. This allows you to play videos from the youtube.com portal on them and view various Internet resources. You can also activate the g-share option and, due to this, decode some channels that were not available until that moment.

Another possible case of using the adapter in question is TVs with active Smart function TV, but at the same time they do not have such a built-in transmitter or are out of order. In this case, such a network card is an alternative means of connecting to the Internet and allows you to play various multimedia content.

Also, a similar adapter can be connected to a PC. In this case, it will act as a wireless network card.

The delivery list of this network card consists of itself, a CD and a warranty card. The validity of the latter can be 3 months or six months. In addition to the drivers, there is also an instruction manual on the CD.

Specifications

Specifications considered in this material wireless adapter WiFi Ralink RT5370 are as follows:

  1. Connection connector - USB.
  2. Support wireless networks 802.11 versions b/g/n.
  3. Max Speed wireless connection is 150 Mbps.
  4. The level of signal amplification by an external antenna is 20 dB.

Setting order. Checking if the wireless connection is working

The dedicated Ralink RT5370 adapter considered in this review is configured in such cases as follows:

  1. When installed on a TV or a modern satellite receiver, it is enough to connect it to the appropriate port. After that, you need to turn on the device and go to its settings, in which we search available connections. We select the one from which we plan to receive information. Enter an access code if necessary.
  2. If the adapter is used as part of a PC, then the algorithm differs only in that after connecting to the connector, you need to install the drivers. Everything else is identical.

Adapter price. Reviews

At the moment, Ralink RT5370 can be purchased for 200-220 rubles. There can be no drawbacks to this network card by default. But to its pluses, the owners in the reviews include reliability, ease of setup, the ability to receive even a weak signal, low cost and very compact size. The only one important point, which you need to clarify before buying such an adapter, is the availability of support this decision within the device. And if it's a PC, then there certainly won't be any problems. But in the case of a TV or receiver, checking is required.

Conclusion

On the one hand, indeed universal device is Ralink RT5370. But its main problem is that such transmitters are already integrated into most TVs, computers and receivers. Therefore, it is advisable to purchase it only if the built-in such an adapter breaks down or is absent.

Wardriving (detection and hacking of points WiFi access) requires special equipment. But splurge on professional devices is not necessary. Among commercially available Wi-Fi adapters, there are also suitable models. To turn them into hacker devices, some manipulation is sometimes required. I will tell you how to choose such a device, where to buy it and what to do with it next.

External Wi-Fi adapters for wardriving

Kali Linux and 5 GHz

Wardriving at 5 GHz has its own challenges. First, due to high frequency signal decays faster. If an 802.11g access point that broadcasts in 2.4 GHz mode can be caught at least a kilometer away, then five GHz ones go out already in a couple of tens of meters even when using the 802.11n standard. To such a goal will have to get closer.

Secondly, to monitor five-GHz access points, you will need a utility with such a function. In Kali Linux 2.0, there is a WiFite r87 program that only sees 2.4GHz APs.

This problem is solved by installing WiFite 2.0.

Git clone https://github.com/derv82/wifite2.git

cd wifite2/

and run the script with a new command to display APs broadcasting on 5 GHz

./Wifite.py -5

If you are not logged in as root, then you need to add sudo before the last command.

Before scanning, it may be useful to install updated firmware with the following command (example for Ralink chips):

# apt-get update && apt-get install firmware-ralink

For other adapters (for example, Atheros), the command is similar, only the vendor name changes.

Each building has a surprise!

Surely you have come across a common phrase more than once: "The manufacturer can change the technical and consumer properties of the product without notice." In practice, this means that if you buy the same Wi-Fi adapter model from different batches, you can find different chips inside. It's good if both of them are on the Linux compatible list. For example, in the first series of the Tenda W322UA adapter, the RT3072 chip was installed. Now they have a newer RT5372L - the same as in Tenda W322U v3. There is a unification of production, but the problem is that no new designations appeared on the device - neither version nor revision.

The W322UA looks interesting, but the chip in it is a cheaper version, and a pair of small pin antennas is of little use. They slightly increase the data rate (due to the use of a 2x2:2 MIMO scheme) at the expense of signal strength. The baby consumes only 660 mW and confidently catches AP only at close range. The signal from routers located behind the wall will always be in the red zone with it.

For wardriving it is better to take one more powerful antenna, but in this adapter they are non-removable. I am glad that the conclusions antenna cable billed separately. They are far away from the chip, so you won't overheat it when you solder another antenna.

Chinese watts and decibels

Signal strength is the key to successful wardriving, but sellers understand this too. Deprived of the remnants of conscience, they overestimate the characteristics of the goods at times and indulge in any deception. For example, in reprints of last year's articles, it is still advised to buy a High Power SignalKing 48DBI device from the Chinese. One of my colleagues decided to check and see what this wonderful adapter has inside. The parcel went for almost two months and ... it would be better if it was lost. An autopsy of the sent sample showed that the omnidirectional antennas in this adapter are a dummy, and the directional antenna is much smaller in size than you would expect, looking at the dimensions of the case. Of course, the gain of the panel antenna does not even come close to what is claimed. You say 48 dBi? It's not even eight. Other adapters from well-known brands show a similar result - they use high-quality 5-6 dBi whip antennas. Yes, and communication with them is more stable than with the self-proclaimed "King of the signal."

Alas, this story is the rule, not the exception. Most products should be viewed with skepticism and not be lazy to count. For example, a USB port with a current limit of 500 mA and an operating voltage of 5 V cannot power a load that consumes more than 2.5 watts. Do you offer a 9W USB adapter? Smile and look for another. With a 100500 dBi antenna? Contact Air Defense! Someone stole their radar!

Buying at a local store does not eliminate the need to think and check. You will simply wait less and return the fake more easily, but you will pay much more for the same. It makes sense to order Chinese goods cheaper in Chinese stores. Apart from AliExpress, there are DealExtreme, FocalPrice, JD and many others.

Life hack: suitable adapters are searched in online stores by the name of the chip, as well as by the mention of Kali Linux, BackTrack, Beini and Xiaopan. Filter search results better not for the price, but for the seller's rating and the number of reviews. There are always hundreds of them for a popular item, and photos and test results come across.

Russian Post does not give up without a fight!

Our mail likes to redirect any complaints about the state of parcels to dev / null or to customs (especially if the integrity of the package is violated). De jure, customs can inspect international parcels, but de facto they rarely use this right. Their flow is so large that even in a quiet period at any customs they have time to check a maximum of every fifth departure. If, upon receipt, you see traces of an autopsy (for example, the package is sealed with tape), then do not believe in stories about total checks. All packages opened at customs are sealed with a tape with the FCS logo, and an act is attached to the shipment. Everything else is outright theft of the delivery service employees.

Recently, Russian Post has been actively fighting this shameful phenomenon. Therefore, if you find that the package has been opened or its weight does not match that specified in the notice, follow the next algorithm.

  1. Do not accept the package and do not sign the notice.
  2. Call on free phone hotline 8-800-2005-888 and clearly state the situation. Be sure to include the post office number and the tracking number of the shipment.
  3. Call the head of the post office or an employee temporarily performing his duties. Yes, exactly in this sequence: a call, then an on-site trial. Without the magic kick from above, it will last forever.
  4. Demand to issue a form for drawing up an act on the opening of an international shipment.
  5. Fill it out at a table in the field of view of a video surveillance camera (now they are in almost every department). In the same place, open the parcel together with the head of the department. If you refuse to do this, call the hotline again and give the name of the employee who denied your legal request.
  6. If you immediately begin to be rude and shout that nothing can be done, call the police squad. This is a theft, and it is usually not difficult to uncover it in hot pursuit. Why? Because of the small circle of suspects and detailed documentation.

At each point of reception and transmission of parcels, their mass is checked, and all data is entered into the database. Therefore, the crime scene is obvious in the first minutes of the investigation. Usually this is the last link in the chain, that is, the very department where you came to receive your package. Remember that the detective who arrived at your call has much more authority (that's why they called him that, hehe) and methods of influencing postal employees than you. It also has performance metrics. Perhaps he will even be happy that he was called to investigate a fresh and well-documented criminal offense (Article 158 of the Criminal Code of the Russian Federation - theft). The content of the parcel interests him only in this aspect. Since you are the applicant and the injured party in this situation, you should not expect any counter-accusations. Almost all Chinese technology can be classified as consumer electronics bought abroad to save money. Of course, if it does not shoot and does not look like an openly spy device.

Hello everyone, I've been wanting to review this adapter for a long time, and now it's actually ready! More details under the "cut".

After buying my second satellite receiver (Openbox S6Pro), the question immediately arose of how best to connect the Internet to it. There were two ways: the first is through a patch cord cable and the second with using wi-fi"whistle". Well, I think it would be best to buy an adapter and connect the receiver to the Internet without any wires. I bought the first tp-link tl-wn727n that came to the store, came home and connected the whole thing, but it didn’t work. There were no suitable drivers in the receiver and he could not see the Wi-Fi adapter, hence it is logical to assume access points. It was about three years ago, the adapter went to gather dust on the shelf, and I had to connect the receiver via cable, since the router was in the same room.
Time passed and at the end of 2016 the router moved to the next room, of course I didn’t want to pull the cable through the floor of the apartment, the question wireless connection receiver to the Internet again became relevant. Googling some information, I found out that with my receiver and my firmware (2.09.35) all several models of "whistles" could work. Basically, these were old revisions that are no longer available in the store.
China came to the rescue, or rather aliexpress from which I ordered two models of adapters based on ralink rt5370 chipsets. If you believe the information from some specialized forums, my receiver should have seen them. In the reviews of these models, people wrote that everything works for them, you can take it!
Upon arrival, each was checked for compatibility, but unfortunately none of the two adapters on the rt5370 chip fit. Perhaps the reason is in the old and ancient firmware of the receiver, the release date of which is already 2011. Why don't I update? But the fact is that all new ones released after version 2.09.35 have the worst picture quality, but with the addition of various kinds of Internet goodies and support for new Wi-Fi modules. The picture is more important to me, so I stayed on the old firmware.
The next attempt was to buy wifi adapter and on the Ralink rt3070 chipset. It will be discussed in this review.
Looking ahead, I’ll say that the whistle came up to my receiver! He arrived in a regular transparent package, without any instructions. There was no driver disk included.

- Light indication: Yes

Black body with soft-touch finish. During use, namely this is almost three months, it has not peeled off.

The dimensions of the device can be seen in more detail in the photo below.

If we compare the dimensions, they are not the largest, but not the smallest either. The adapter from comfast stands out from the rest with its miniature size.

The manufacturer did not forget about the indicator light, here it is presented in the form of a blue LED, which, depending on the operating mode, either simply shines continuously or constantly blinks when receiving / transmitting data. In my opinion, it is too bright and immediately begins to distract.

As I said above, the adapter was taken specifically to work with Openbox S6Pro, the first inclusion showed that everything “grown together”. To work in satellite receiver no driver installation was required, they are not so easy to install. You need to connect the whistle to the turned off receiver, otherwise it will not see it. After that, turn it on, in the "network" section, in addition to standard Ethernet, we will also have wifi connection. To check the range of the built-in antenna, I connected to the router, which was located on the lower floor of the house, at a distance of about 7-9 meters. The connection was successfully established, during the tests, no disconnections or disconnects were detected. In addition to openbox s6pro, I also checked compatibility with openbox s4 and skyway nano 3, on these receivers the whistle also worked without problems.

I tried working on a PC on two systems with Win 10 and Win 7. Yes, of course, a Wi-Fi adapter with 2.4 GHz is already an obsolete device. If you only need it to work in conjunction with a PC, it is better to take it with support for two bands of 2.4 and 5 GHz. For win 10, the drivers did not have to be downloaded separately, they were found and installed automatically (if the Internet was available), on win 7 they need to be installed and downloaded manually. Current version drivers at the time of writing the review 5.1.22.0., but it seems to me that this version is more stable

The adapter has a built-in antenna, so you should not demand anything beyond the possible from it.
I ran some simple tests for signal quality and speed under different conditions:
My rate is 20mb/s
- in the same room with a router at a distance of 3 meters from it, I got the following numbers:

The same speed test, but at a distance of 8 meters and through one brick wall -

At a distance of 15 meters and through three doors (with glass), the speed and signal strength dropped a little. But the result is still not bad, I think the reason is in my router with good coverage signal (xiaomi nano).

The adapter consumes a little more than from comfast on rt5370. When connected to a PC / receiver, the consumption is 0.09A. After connecting to any Wi-Fi network, it increases to 0.10A, and in active mode, in the mode of receiving and transmitting data - up to 0.12A.

The wi-fi whistle is easily disassembled, the case is made of two halves held on by latches.

Inside, everything, in principle, is done neatly, the soldering is not manual, there is a small amount of unwashed flux. The board is marked CWF - 3E Ver 1.3 and the release date is November 2016. Everything seems to be done normally, but the lack of a screen is striking, which in such devices usually serves to protect against interference and interference. Although there is a place for this very screen on the board, the Chinese decided to save a little.

The chip is really ralink rt3070L. The model is not the first freshness, but the adapter was taken on this particular chipset specifically for working with a satellite receiver.

In conclusion, I would like to note that I am generally satisfied with the purchase, the wi-fi adapter on the rt3070 turned out to be compatible with my receiver and now performs the task for which it was originally bought. The built-in antenna is enough to create a connection without interruptions at a sufficient distance from the router.

That's all, thanks for your attention.
