In the area of the captured sound, the microphone is narrowly directed, with passive noise reduction. Normally tuned, perfectly assembled: it transmits hissing sounds normally, on the letters “p” or “t” it doesn’t spit at interlocutors from speakers or headphones, it doesn’t catch breathing unless you specifically blow into it. In terms of music, without setting the equalizer to your favorite genre, there is nothing to catch here. The sound will sound flat, expressionless and lifeless. But everything is fine with the equalizer: the maximum volume, I would say, is excessive for such a form factor, but nothing rattles or falls apart. There are low frequencies, even if there are not very many of them, the middle ones sound confident, the tops do not merge. Of course, these are not specialized headphones for listening to music, but if you have a regular built-in sound system, and the music is from VKontakte or some other online service ... the headset's capabilities are more than enough.

Value for money

If you open Yandex Market now and look for HyperX Cloud Drone there, you won’t know the price. The headphones will go on sale only on August 15, they will be available throughout Russia exclusively in the DNS chain of stores for a rather modest 3,990 rubles.

You will not find anything as cool for this money: the younger models of SteelSeries are now terrible bullshit with a disgusting microphone that transmits noises from behind the window, a neighbor's TV, signals from Mars, and maybe your voice, if you're lucky. In general, the design of the headband is such that often the headphones can slide or put a lot of pressure on the listener's head. However, in this case, such problems do not arise, due to the small mass of the headset.

The speakers are covered with a thin black sound-permeable mesh fabric, which almost does not touch the ears when used. The ear pads provide good sound isolation from the outside world.

The headband can be extended by 2.5 cm on each side, which allows you to adjust the size of the mount to the listener's head.

On the right cup of the headset there is a wheel with a diameter of 23 mm to adjust the volume level. Its free play range is approximately 300 degrees. A special recess makes it easier to find the volume control wheel by touch, as it practically does not protrude above the surface of the cup.

On the left cup of the headset, a movable and flexible boom with a microphone is fixed, which can be moved in a vertical plane within 130 degrees. When moving the rod up, a characteristic click is heard - and the microphone turns off. This microphone control is intuitive and convenient. The boom can be freely bent to select a comfortable microphone position relative to the user's mouth. As for the microphone itself, it is covered with a metal mesh.

The interface cable is protected by a textile braid, and the supplied Y-shaped extension cable allows you to move three meters away from the PC in the headset.

No special software is required to operate the headset.

Measurements in RMAA

To measure the reproducible frequency range, we used the Bruel Kjaer 4153 - Artificial Ear / Ear Simulator (IEC 60318-1 compliant), which is able to emulate the ear impedance up to a frequency of 16 kHz.

Here's an expert's opinion Maxim Lyadov: “The sound of the headphones is average. Even with the use of the bass equalizer, the sound provides only an average level of detail. There are no noticeable distortions in the sound, and, in principle, you can listen to music, but you don’t need to hope for much. On the other hand, given the cost and positioning as a budget gaming solution, everything is in line with expectations. Better sound quality and more expensive.”

Practice

Using the HyperX Cloud Drone gaming headset, we listened to various music tracks and, of course, played games such as CS: GO, Dota 2 and Arma 3. Traditionally, we compared the tested headset with our reference Sennheiser HD 449 headphones, and connected the headphones to external sound card Creative Sound Blaster Omni Surround 5.1.

So, testing showed that, in general, you can listen to music. The headset reproduces the sound range in games well, we did not notice significant distortions that could spoil the impression during the game. In general, if you remember that this is an inexpensive solution, which is positioned as such by the manufacturer, then here the possibilities correspond to the budget. Do you want cheaper? You can search, but, most likely, such a headset will sound a little worse. Do you have money for a more expensive solution? Maybe an expensive headset will sound better, maybe it won't. In any case, before buying, you should try on the model for yourself and listen to the sound.

Due to its light weight, the headset is well kept on the listener's head. The applied design of the headband, if the headphones are heavy, often does not allow them to be used with proper comfort. The pressure on the ears is moderate.

We tested the performance of the headphones when connected to a PS4 and an Android smartphone. In both cases, both the headphones and the microphone worked properly, and when the microphone boom was raised to the upper position, it turned off.

The regular interface cable of the headset is equipped with a mini-jack connector, which hints at the possibility of using Cloud Drone on the road. Yes, the microphone boom can be raised to the top position, but it cannot be removed completely. In our opinion, it is better to take something more compact and inconspicuous on the road.

Diagnosis

The HyperX Cloud Drone gaming headset belongs to the budget class and provides a balanced set of features for its price. The headset is light and due to this it is conveniently held on the listener's head. The materials used are of good quality and pleasant to the touch. The headset will satisfy fans of playing on PCs or consoles with acceptable sound quality and good microphone performance.

Microphone control is implemented intuitively. It is worth noting a rather convenient possibility to adjust the volume level using the wheel on the right cup of the headset. At the time of writing the review, the HyperX Cloud Drone headset could be purchased at retail from the only official dealer in Russia and the CIS countries of the DNS chain of stores for 3999 rubles.
