One usb port on laptop not working. What to do if the headphone jack is not working

Subscribe:

USB, headphone and microphone outputs on the front panel allow you to quickly and comfortably connect peripherals. To use these connectors, you must correct connection and setting.

Connecting, configuring and operating the front panel of the system unit

Connecting a flash drive to a computer on the rear panel has always been difficult, because for this you had to move system unit or use a special USB extension cable. The same applies to connecting headphones with a microphone. Now, absolutely all cases are equipped with a front panel, on which there are two USB inputs, as well as headphone and microphone outputs.

For the front panel to function correctly, it must be connected to the motherboard using special connectors. As a rule, they are monolithic and have a special key that eliminates incorrect connection, because one of the contact legs will not allow you to insert a connector (it will rest against the plug). The most important thing is not to overdo it and not bend the leg, but take a closer look and connect the socket to the connector.

Front USB inputs not working

Usually, USB inputs do not require any additional settings and are used in normal mode. If for some reason the device connected to them does not work, go to the "Device Manager" tab. To do this, click right click click on "My Computer" and go to "Manage" (requires administrator rights). Next, update the hardware configuration, USB drivers.

In some cases, the front panel stops working due to a heavy layer of dust on the contacts from the inside (this also applies to audio inputs). To eliminate this problem, clean the system unit from dust by detaching the front cover.

In the event that the panel of the system unit is correctly connected to the motherboard, and all necessary settings, but when connected, the device is not detected, most likely the problem is already related to the connector on the motherboard.

Try connecting it to a different connector (usually there are several). The reason is that these connectors are considered secondary and in the event of a breakdown, the motherboard will not swear at anything and work normally. To restore the functioning of this connector, you will need to contact a specialist service center.

note! In some cases, connecting an external hard drive to the front panel does not guarantee full functioning, because the power supplied to these inputs is minimal and the hard drive may not have enough of it. If the device does not work when connected to the front panel, use the rear input.

Front connected headphones and microphone not working

Audio inputs are connected in the same way as USB, with the only difference being that there is only one such connector for audio. Usually located at the bottom motherboard left.

In order for these connectors to work correctly, it is necessary that the latest drivers are installed, which require manual setting outputs and their characteristics.

Go to "Control Panel" - "Hardware and Sound" and find the Realtech HD Manager tab at the bottom (there may be a different name, depending on the version of the driver and hardware).

In order to activate the headphone and microphone outputs on the front panel, click on the link in the form of a folder in the upper right corner and set bullets on the specified items.

In the bookmark " Additional settings Devices” you can set other parameters, for example, so that the sound is played on the line-in and headphones at the same time or separately from each other.

Problems with inoperability can be similar to those with USB - dust or a non-working socket on the motherboard.

note, some models of headphones and microphones require the installation of additional drivers, without which they will not be recognized by the system even when connected to the rear panel.

Laptop users are not always careful about their device. And they do not worry at all about the condition of the connectors.

Meanwhile, the breakdown of this element negatively affects the performance and functioning of the laptop.

A faulty connector on a laptop causes problems of varying degrees of complexity.

The failure of the connectors for connecting gadgets makes it impossible to fully operate the laptop and external device. Further operation of the connector by fixing the plug in it in the working position with improvised means causes the controllers and other parts to burn out.

A broken power connector can damage the battery, motherboard, and cause other serious malfunctions due to unstable voltage.

As you can see, a faulty connector can cause expensive laptop repairs in the future, so operating a laptop with problematic connectors is undesirable.

Common causes of broken laptop connectors:

  • intensive use of connectors, as a result of which they are greatly loosened;
  • inaccurate use, for example, abruptly pulling the plug out of the connector;
  • falling laptop with connected gadgets;
  • fracture of wires in the area of the plug with further overheating of the wire and melting of the connector;
  • laptop overheating.

The above factors can cause:

  • lack of contact in the connector, when the battery is charged only at a certain position of the laptop, or the gadget either works or not when it moves in the connector;
  • the connector is skewed, due to which the plug falls out, or it is not inserted or inserted with force;
  • melting of the connector, in which sometimes it is even impossible to remove the plug from it.

In these cases, you do not need to delay the repair of the laptop, you should contact the service center.

To repair or replace connectors, a complete disassembly of the laptop is often necessary. Specialists will check the possibility of repairing the connectors. If necessary, they can solder using a technology that provides a permanent connection between the connector and the motherboard.

If repair is not possible, then the connector will need to be replaced with its analogue. This can be done at the service center.

Is it possible to do without a service center

In some cases, you can do without the help of a service center. In my practice, I once met a laptop, in which almost all the connectors were, as they say, loosened.

It turned out that once this laptop was “grabbed from the table”, without thinking that wires were connected to its connectors. As a result, USB connectors began to work poorly, the wired connector practically did not work. Internet LAN unless you hold it with your hands. And even the keyboard worked "through the stump of the deck", individual letters were either printed or not.

To get this laptop up and running quickly, the USB ports have been tested. There were 4 of them, 2 of them turned out to be working, because they were in an inconvenient place (behind, below the screen), and, apparently, they were rarely connected to. To one of these working connectors was connected external USB keyboard. Thus, the problem with the laptop keyboard has been temporarily resolved.

By connecting this board to the PCMCIA connector, a working connector was obtained for connecting the wire from the router. And the Internet worked without problems.

A picture of the board has been added below in order to make it clear what devices connected to the laptop via PCMCIA are in question (since I did not find a picture with a LAN connector for connecting to a wired Internet).

Interestingly, after some time, with a quiet and normal operation of the laptop repaired in this way, the built-in keyboard began to work normally. The keys that were not reproduced, for no reason at all, began to work. It became possible to turn off the external keyboard about a month after such a repair. Probably, something got inside the built-in keyboard and then left on its own, again as a result, I believe, of the correct and calm operation of the laptop.

Despite the fact that there are a great many varieties of headphones for work and leisure, based on different physical principles of operation, they all have the same troubles. For example, the connector does not work, the wires break, the case itself breaks ...

But most often on the audio device, the headset jack inputs suffer, as they easily fail when the headphones are pulled out sharply.

If there is a problem with the phone or player

A failure in the normal operation of the audio device on the phone or player, associated with the headset jack, usually manifests itself in the following way:

  • loss of sound if you do not hold the plug in the headphone jack with your hand;
  • strange noise and / or crackles when playing an audio file;
  • absence or partial loss of sound in one of the headphone cases (left or right);

To rule out malfunctions of the headphones themselves and to make sure that the headset jack is not working, connect the headphones to another, working, source sound signal. With their normal operation, we can say with full confidence that the breakdown is not related to the headphones.

To make sure that the problem is in the headphones, connect them to another device

In this case, 4 types of faults are possible:

  • mechanical damage to the connector;
  • contact oxidation or short circuit in the electrical equipment of an audio device;
  • damage to the board or other parts of the audio player. It will be possible to accurately determine the cause of the malfunction only after disassembling the case;
  • incorrect work software a gadget that is treated by charging the battery (rarely), a normal reboot (sometimes) or re-flashing ( positive result strives for 100%.

Some of the above malfunctions can be fixed on your own, but if it doesn’t work out, you will have to give mobile device to repair or replace the audio device.

If the connection to a working sound source showed that the headset is not working, there are 3 options left:

  • return the headset to the store or free warranty repair;
  • repair at your own expense or self fix defect in the presence of the necessary skills;
  • buying new headphones.

If the problem is with a laptop or computer

If the headphone jack does not work on a PC or laptop, be prepared for the fact that you will have to deal with the device software to fix the problem. So, why is there no sound when you insert the plug into the corresponding hole on the laptop or system unit?

Perhaps the problem is that the motherboard simply "does not see" the connector you are trying to connect to. In this situation, disassembling the PC system unit or laptop case will help, followed by connecting the necessary peripherals. It's easy to do it yourself. Well, if you’re really a teapot, you’ll have to call a specialist.

Video: why the front ports of the computer do not work

Silence in the headphones may also be due to the lack of system connection selected connector. To fix the problem, you will need to go into the settings and allow the system to see audio devices with a standard 3.5 mm plug.

Perhaps there is a "glitch", which often happens with this kind of equipment. Try changing the default playback device. There is a possibility that the problem is related to a virus or incorrect operation of the software.

The malfunction may be due to missing or corrupted sound system drivers for your laptop or PC. It's no secret that any of Windows versions(even the latest ones) can “lose” the driver for no reason. When downloading new software, use the official website of the hardware manufacturer.

Everything is fixable if you understand that there are no unsolvable problems. The main thing is not to give up, but to look for a way to solve them.

Peripheral devices such as a mouse, keyboard, webcam, printer are usually connected to the computer via USB ports. In this case, it often happens that one or more ports stop working. That is, when connected to a computer, for example, a flash drive, it is not recognized, the keyboard or mouse may freeze, and the printer may not respond and print pages.

There are several probable causes for which some or all of the USB ports on the computer are not working. Let's try to understand this issue and find out what should be done to restore normal functioning computer.

Checking the BIOS settings

The first thing to pay attention to is BIOS settings computer. You will need a working keyboard to enter the BIOS. If the keyboard is connected to the computer via USB and it does not work, then you need to connect a keyboard with a PS / 2 connector. Otherwise, you simply cannot do anything.

So, we go into the BIOS, for which, when starting the computer, you must press the enter key, usually it is DEL. There may be another key that is displayed on the screen and is listed in the motherboard manual. After entering the BIOS, find the section responsible for the integrated devices (Integrated Peripherals) or the "Advanced" section. Here you should find the subsection “Onboard Devices Configuration”. It is in it that the parameters responsible for the operation of USB controllers are located: USB Function or USB 2.0 Controller. These parameters must be enabled (Enabled). And if one of them is disabled (Disabled), then hover over it and press Enter, thereby enabling it. To prevent your changes from being reset, you must save them by pressing F10 and confirm the save by pressing the Y or Enter key.

After rebooting the computer, check if the USB ports are working. And if not, then you should look for the cause elsewhere.

USB ports on the front of the computer do not work

As a special case, USB only on the front panel may not work for you. In such a situation, it is necessary to check whether the necessary connectors on the motherboard are connected and whether the wires are damaged. To do this, open the side cover of the system unit and pay attention to the connector at the bottom of the motherboard. The board itself has the inscription USB1 or USB2, as well as on the block itself. The wires from the block go to the front panel, and if they are disconnected or broken in one place, then you have found the cause of the malfunction. Damaged wires should be connected or replaced. It will not be superfluous to check the contact in the connector on the motherboard. It is also worth paying attention to the board located on the front panel. Perhaps there is a short circuit, by the way, such a circuit can be triggered by accumulated dust. Therefore, be sure to clean the system unit from dust.

Problems with the device itself or the cable

The next source of USB problems can be the cable connected to, for example, a printer. This error is easy to identify and fix. We connect a USB flash drive to the checked connector. If it works, then we try to connect other known good equipment using a suspicious cable, for example, a USB hub. If it also refuses to work, then the reason is definitely in the cable and it should be replaced.

Power outages

There are situations when there is simply not enough power for all devices. For example, when connecting external hard A drive that uses two USB connectors at once may disable the printer or keyboard. In this case, the power of the power supply is not enough to provide energy to all consumers. In this case, the problem may not appear immediately, but after some time after turning on the computer. There are several ways out of the situation. If you have a low-power power supply installed, for example, 300 W, then it would be logical to change it to a more powerful one, 450-600 W. You can also use an active USB hub (with external power). It will allow not only to increase the number of connected USB devices, but also to power them from a separate power supply.

Another reason affecting USB performance is a dead CMOS battery. But at the same time, every time you turn on the computer, you will observe a lost system time and date. After replacing the battery, the problem goes away. But this is not common, so you should check the rest possible sources malfunctions.

Missing or incorrect installation of USB drivers

Reasons related to software malfunctions in Windows 7/10, can be detected using the Device Manager. If you notice that one or more devices specifically does not work, regardless of the port used, then this may indicate that the problem is in the device itself. Open the Control Panel and go to the Device Manager section. All connected devices will be displayed there. If there are items in the list that have yellow next to them exclamation mark or instead of the name there is an Unknown device, then the problem is in this very device. There may be several possible problems here.

Often USB inputs stop working after reinstalling windows 7/10. The reason is incorrect installation drivers, or the necessary drivers may not be found at all. You will have to select and install manually.

Often, to fix a problem, you just need to update the driver. So, if automatic windows update, and the system itself was installed a long time ago, then the relevance of the software is lost, may appear system errors. At the same time, the device starts to work incorrectly, or even stops functioning altogether. To update (reinstall) the USB controller drivers, you can use the motherboard driver CD/DVD or download the necessary drivers from the motherboard manufacturer's website.

You can also turn off the power saving feature for all ports using the Device Manager. Expand the list of used USB devices hidden in the USB controllers, Mouse and other pointing devices, Keyboards sections. Double click on the mouse desired device to open the properties window. Now switch to the "Power Management" tab and uncheck "Allow the computer to turn off this device to save power." Thus, the device will be activated always and under any circumstances.

If some equipment is not recognized, then there may be a problem with the drivers already known to us, as well as a hardware problem, consisting in a lack of contact, cable damage, or a controller malfunction. Moreover, it often happens that when a faulty device is connected, the rest stop working normally. The keyboard starts to freeze, as does the mouse, and the printer stops printing. The problem is similar to a lack of power, that is, the consumption of all power goes to a faulty device, which may have an ordinary short circuit or other malfunction.

USB ports not working due to damaged controller

If none of the above actions helped restore the USB ports, then you should check the motherboard USB controller, which could have failed. In this case, high-quality repairs and diagnostics should be entrusted to the specialists of the service center. As a way out of the problem, try installing an expansion board, the so-called USB PC controller, which is installed in the PCI slot on the motherboard. This solution is much cheaper than repairing the USB controller of the motherboard, and when using an additional USB hub, the problem with the lack of ports will not be relevant at all.

As you can see, finding and fixing problems with USB ports is a rather troublesome business, and all because there can be a lot of reasons. Consistently finding and eliminating obviously wrong paths will allow you to identify and fix the problem.

Quite often, people come to us with the question - why do not work USB port s on a laptop or computer. USB ports may stop working after reinstalling Windows, after updating drivers, or at any inopportune moment. Of course, the problem may be USB malfunctions ports, but before taking your laptop/computer to a service center, you should check the settings to make sure that the problems are not in the software.

So, let's see what you can do in a situation where USB ports do not work on a computer or laptop.

Check USB ports

The first thing you need to do is check the USB ports for physical damage.

A simple test is as follows: insert a USB device into a port on a laptop and see if the connected device moves up and down easily. Be careful! You shouldn't pull hard on the USB port to avoid breaking it.

In case the USB port moves too freely, the problem is probably physical damage. You should contact the service center to replace the USB port.

To restart a computer

You can also try the good old method of any department technical support: turn off and on. Sometimes it really works because operating system rescans Hardware, including USB ports, making them work.

If that doesn't work and the USB ports are still not working on your computer, then it's time to check Device Manager.

Check device manager

you can run Device Manager in several ways, but we will talk about the fastest: press the Win + R keys, and enter devmgmt.msc. Click "OK" or key « Enter». Device Manager should immediately appear on your computer screen.

In this window, we are interested in the section " USB controllers". Click on the arrow next to this label to expand the section. You will see something like the window below:

Here you should find a device that has the words USB Host Controller in its title. For example, in my case it is Intel(R) 5-Series / 3400 Series Chipset Family USB Enhanced Host Controller. Some letters may differ for you, but in general you should have a similar device. If it just doesn't exist, this is probably the problem why the USB ports on the laptop don't work.

In this case, you should right-click on " USB controllers» and select "Update configuration". The computer will recheck the hardware and you will see the USB Host Controller listed.

Remove USB Host Controller

Next, you need to be careful. If you are working on a computer, then most likely you have a USB mouse and keyboard connected. After you remove the USB Host Controller, your mouse and keyboard will not work. This is not a problem as they will work again after restarting the computer.

So, as you understand, you should right-click on USB device Host Controller and select " Delete". Complete this action for all devices named USB Host Controller.

After removing the USB Host Controller, restart your computer or laptop. After restarting, the computer will automatically install necessary drivers for USB work ports.

Find registry key DisableSelectiveSuspend

If the USB ports are still not working, then we let's go again Next, let's make some changes in the Registry Editor.

To go to the registry editor, press the keys Win+R, enter regedit, and press the " Enter". The registry editor window will open.

Next you need to find the registry key DisableSelectiveSuspend. It is located in the following folder: HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE -> SYSTEM -> CurrentControlSet -> Services -> USB. Next, in the right window, right-click on the file " DisableSelectiveSuspend", and select " Change».

In field " Meaning» enter number 1 . This way you will disable the selective suspend feature and power will always be supplied to your USB ports.

If there is no USB folder

If the USB folder doesn't exist in your registry, it's easy to create it. Just go to the Services folder, then on the toolbar click " Edit»> « Create»> « Chapter". name it USB.

Next select new usb section, right click in empty window on right. You will only have the option " Create". Click on it and select the value " DWORD value (32-bit)". Enter the title DisableSelectiveSuspend.

As we wrote above, right-click and select "Edit". In the Value field, enter the number 1. You must restart your computer for the changes to take effect.

Ready! Our advice should help in a situation where the USB ports on the computer have stopped working. If you know other reasons why USB ports on a laptop do not work, and how to fix it, write in the comments below.
