Hardware and software setup

Like a portable drive. How to transfer data to an external hard drive

External HDD is more vulnerable than a stationary carrier. It is constantly moved from place to place, exposed to environmental influences, risks of falling and improper connection. Therefore, it fails much more often. If the next time you connect to a computer, it cannot be detected by the operating system, then this may indicate damage to its file system. Consider how to restore external media without formatting.

Causes of Removable Disk Problems

  • The file system is corrupted.
  • happened software failure devices.
  • The removable hard drive has been affected by a virus.
  • The device was incorrectly disconnected from the computer.
  • Careless handling of the drive, mechanical damage.

Is it possible to restore a portable hard drive without formatting it yourself? In most cases, unless the device has been mechanically damaged, the data on it can be recovered. To do this, consider 2 ways.

Media recovery using Windows

The external hard drive is checked for errors on it. To do this, the utility is launched, which is included with Windows. To run it, you need command line write the cmd command. After confirming the command, a console appears on the monitor, where the line "chkdsk h: / f" is written, in which "h" is the letter of your removable media.

If, when trying to check, the computer displays a message stating that in this moment it is impossible to check, then you need to agree to the offer to check the selected disk at the next system reboot.

You can choose another way to check the disk for errors, more visual and accessible. To do this, follow these steps:

In most cases, after a scan, the hard drive will completely restore its structure without formatting. After the treatment, it will start on its own, and all the data will be visible on the monitor.

Restoring an external drive using R-Studio

You can restore external media without formatting. This utility works with all known file systems, recovers information from deleted and damaged partitions, works with encrypted files.

After starting the program, all disks will be displayed in its window.

On the left side, all media connected to the computer will be visible. Media recovery is performed in the following order:

  1. Choosing from this list external hard disk, you can look at information about this media. It will be displayed in the right window.
  2. When you click on the "Scan" button, the program will scan the selected media and display information in the form of colored clusters.
  3. When you hover over a cluster, all information about it will be displayed in the right part of the window. The duration of the scan depends on the storage capacity. In some cases, it can take tens of minutes.
  4. When the test is completed, the following window will appear:
  5. We need to go to the "EXTRA FOUND FILES" subsection. A list of found files will appear.
  6. Now the found files can be restored. To do this, you need to put labels in front of those files that we need.
  7. Press the RECOVER button. If you decide to restore all found files, you can immediately use the "RECOVER ALL" button.
  8. After confirming the choice, you need to decide where to save the recovered files.

Since they take up a very large amount of space, a decent-capacity hard drive is required. With a shortage of free space on the media, only part of the information can be restored. The restore operation starts with the appearance of such a window.

A few years ago, many laptop users complained about the small capacity hard drive. With development modern technologies this problem was solved by the appearance external hard disk. How to use an external hard drive so that it lasts as long as possible? The external hard drive is mobile device which you can always take with you.
How to use an external hard drive? Its operation is not much different from using the built-in hard drive. But there are some peculiarities when copying, adding and saving files on an external hard drive.

Device and installation of the hard disk

Installing an external hard drive takes place in several stages:

  1. Connecting an external hard drive to a computer or laptop via a USB port using an adapter.
  2. Automatic installation required drivers to the hard drive of a computer or laptop.
  3. The appearance of a shortcut to an external hard drive in the My Computer folder. It will be placed last in the list under other hard drives installed on the computer.

After the external hard drive is installed on the computer, you can start working with it. For the convenience of working with an external hard drive and storing files, it is recommended to create several folders on it for different kind files:

  • music,
  • games,
  • photos,
  • working files.

Ways to copy files to an external hard drive

One way to copy files is to move them from your computer to a disk. To do this, you can use the "send" command. The mouse moves to the selected file, right-clicks on it and select the send function from the menu that appears. The destination must be a drive, such as esata hard drive, ssd external hard drive, or whatever you have installed.

Disconnecting an external hard drive

Properly disconnecting an external hard drive is the main condition for its long operation. Disconnecting an external hard drive incorrectly can result in the loss of information stored on it. It will be possible to eliminate such a problem only by formatting.

If your computer is running Windows, to disable the external hard drive, and other electronic media, such as flash drives, you can use special application to safely remove devices. At the bottom of the screen on the taskbar, in the right corner, when a new device is connected, its shortcut appears. When disconnecting an external hard drive, the mouse is hovering over the shortcut installed disk, is pressed right buttons mouse, and the "safely remove" command is selected from the pop-up menu.

After the command to safely remove the device has been selected, you must wait until a window pops up with permission to remove the device. You can get an external hard drive from the USB port.
When using an external hard drive, some of the data that is selected for recording may be automatically saved in the cache operating system. If you think that the external hard drive has already finished its job of copying information, you may be mistaken. As practice shows, the situation can be quite the opposite. Therefore, if the work is not completed correctly, data is lost.

If you disconnect an external hard drive, but see a pop-up message that the drive is still working, you should not turn it off, even through safe removal. Before turning it off, check to see if there are files in the write queue and if any files are open on the disk. Only after the external hard drive is completely shut down, it can be removed.

As the demands for expanding storage space and preserving information on computers have increased, external hard drives have become a popular storage option. On most computers and operating systems, you can easily transfer data to an external hard drive. Using an external hard drive will reduce the possibility of data loss or data theft. In addition, data can be archived and stored on an external hard drive so that it does not take up space on the main hard drive. In most cases, transferring data from a computer to an external hard drive is as simple as inserting the drive into the computer, selecting the files on the computer that you want to transfer, and copying them to the external drive.
To transfer data to an external hard drive, first select the external hard drive that will suit your storage needs. Depending on the type of data, you may need a hard drive with a very large capacity. If you have a lot of pictures, videos or music files, an external hard drive with large quantity places are a great idea. If you plan to transfer data such as documents, a smaller capacity external hard drive will suffice. Some external rigid the discs are small enough to fit on a keychain, which is great for travelers who need to read small files on the go.

External hard drives are connected to the computer by a cable, which is often connected to the USB universal serial bus. External hard drives are also available with other connections such as FireWire. Make sure your computer supports connecting an external hard drive. USB ports are common to most computer systems.

To transfer data, start by connecting an external hard drive by inserting it into the appropriate port. Most computers will recognize the hard drive as a new device and then test it to determine if it is. The computer will assign a drive letter to the portable hard drive. This will allow you to transfer data to it just like moving files on your computer.

Select the data you want to move, decide whether you want to copy it to an external hard drive, or whether you want to delete the entire data from the main hard drive. In many cases, you will be able to view the contents of a folder on each drive, and determine which files need to be copied or moved by showing the target to an external hard drive; you can then just drag and drop the files you want so they can move from one window to another. You can also cut or copy files from the source location and paste them to the destination drive.

Many USB devices are also hot swappable, which means they can be plugged in and out while the computer is on. To remove the device, use the Disconnect Device from Computer utility. This ensures that the device is not damaged when you unplug and unplug it. When transferring data, you'll want to make sure it doesn't get lost, so rest assured and wait a bit until the computer says the data has been transferred and you can safely unplug your external hard drive.

An external hard drive can be used to transfer data from multiple computers. The drive can be connected to any computer with the appropriate port that recognizes the drive. The data on the disk can be seen and manipulated at will by the user. This allows multiple users to use the same external hard drive. It also makes portable data quite useful on the go.

External hard drives are much less vulnerable to virus attacks and spyware because they are not permanently connected to the computer. When transferring data, make sure it has been scanned so that you don't inadvertently introduce viruses to your external hard drive.

Hello friends, my name is Vladimir and in previous articles we created a bootable USB hard drive and installed Windows 10 from it, in this article I want to continue this topic. Today I will show you how to create a multi-boot USB hard drive and install Windows 7, 8.1, 10 from it. We will use AOMEI programs Partition Assistant Standard Edition 5.6 and WinSetupFromUSB 1.5.

I must say that it is very convenient to have such a disk at hand, because there is no need for a bootable USB flash drive. For example, I took a portable hard drive (size 1TB) and created a 32 GB partition on it, on this partition, using the WinSetupFromUSB 1.5 program, I placed Windows 7, 8, 8.1, 10 operating systems (various editions, including Single Language) and a few more Live CDs (Live CD is an operating system that does not require installation and is loaded from a USB flash drive or portable hard drive). As a result, I will have a portable USB hard drive with my files, and I can also install several operating systems from it.

Let's get down to business.

We connect a portable USB hard drive to our computer, in my case its size is 1 TB. If your USB hard drive has a USB 3.0 interface and your computer or laptop has USB ports 3.0, then connect the drive to them, all processes will be much faster.

  • Note: Friends, in the process of working with your data on a USB portable hard drive, nothing should happen (they will not be deleted), but just in case, I recommend you the most important files copy to a safe place.

Disk management of my computer.

We see my USB 3.0 portable hard drive, model western digital My Passport, 1TB in size, is divided into two sections, both sections contain important files and nothing will happen while working with them.

Create a 32 GB FAT32 partition on a USB portable hard drive

We launch free program.

Highlight the partition (I:) with the left mouse and click on Change of size.

We move the delimiter to the right, freeing up free space (32 GB, the size of a large flash drive, by the way, you can choose more, for example 64 GB) at the very beginning of the portable USB hard drive and click OK.

Select the created unallocated space with the left mouse and click on the button Section creation.

Choose file system FAT32 and click OK

AOMEI Partition Assistant Standard Edition is running in pending operation mode.

Click Apply and the application will start sequentially executing the specified operations.

The process can be long, in my case it took 5 minutes.

We managed to create a 32 GB partition (F :) formatted in the FAT32 file system at the very beginning of the portable hard drive.

The first part of the article is over.

Note: In the process of running the program on a portable hard drive, a small unallocated space was created right in the middle and I removed it in Disk Management, expanding the partition (I :) due to it

Making a portable USB hard drive multiboot using the program WinSetupFromUSB-1-6-beta2 and put in it ISO images of operating Windows systems 7, 8.1, 10 and other LiveCDs

The first operating system added to our multi-boot USB drive will be Windows 10 PRO.

Note: the reader is probably wondering why you and I do not immediately start working in WinSetupFromUSB-1-6-beta2, but just copy Windows files 10 on a flash drive, I answered this question at the end of the article!

We connect the ISO image of Windows 10 to a virtual drive

We select all the files of the operating system and copy them to the one we created partition (F:) 32 GB FAT32portable USB hard drive.

Windows 10 files copied to partition (F:)

Windows 10 added to multiboot USB hard drive.

To add other operating systems, as well as the Live CDs you need, we will use the WinSetupFromUSB-1-6-beta2 program.

We will add the second Windows to our multiboot disk - Windows 8.1 PRO

In the upper field, select the newly created first partition (F :) 32 GB in size, formatted in the FAT32 file system.

Check the boxand click on the button on the right to open the explorer window

Select the Windows 8.1 PRO ISO image with the left mouse and click Open

Yes. The program should not require anything else!

The process of creating a multiboot begins USB disk, a second Win 8.1 operating system is added to the drive

Ready. OK.

The start of the multiboot USB hard drive is laid and it already has two operating systems Win 10 and Win 8.1.

Friends, if you now boot from a USB hard drive, the boot menu will appear, in which there will be a choice of two systems we have added, the first Windows Setup (Windows 10) and the second Windows 8.1 PRO

Let's add a few more operations: Windows 8.1 Single Language, Windows7, 8, and other Live CDs.

The next system I propose to add is Windows 8.1 Single Language, it is often used for reinstallation on laptops.

In the main window of WinSetupFromUSB-1-6-beta2 in the top field is the first partition (F:) is 32 GB in size. The item "Vista/7/8/Server 2008/2012 based ISO" is checked, click on the button on the right to open the explorer window

and add Windows 8.1 ISO image

The program asks what to name the operating system in the boot menu, enter the name Windows 8.1 Single Language. OK.

By the way, you can not enter anything and the name will be given automatically after 20 seconds - Windows 8.1 64, but then you will have several identical Windows names in the boot menu.

Added to the shelf, Windows 8.1 Single Language added to the multiboot disk.

Similarly, we add Windows 8 PRO.

We do everything in the same way as when adding previous systems.

Adding Windows 7

Adding Various LiveCDs to a Multiboot USB Disk

Adding various LiveCDs to a multiboot USB drive looks a little different.

In the WinSetupFromUSB program, tick not the second (as in previous cases), but the fourth item Linux ISO/Other Grub4dos compatible ISO and click on the button on the right

in the explorer window that opens, select any LiveCD, for example AOMEI Backupper Standard, select it with the left mouse button and click Open.

The program suggests the name LiveCD in the AOMEI Backupper Standard boot menu. OK.

I think there are enough examples, let's now look at how the boot process from our multi-boot USB disk will take place.

We connect our multiboot USB hard drive to a computer or laptop and reboot.

We enter the boot menu.

If your laptop has UEFI enabled and secure boot

So in the boot menu, select a portable USB hard drive

In the next boot menu, select the Windows you need to install. Let me remind you once again that the very first Windows 10 has a name Windows Setup.

If your laptop is off UEFI and Secure Boot

Then also in the boot menu, select a portable USB hard drive

V this menu you can choose to boot any LiveCD you add.

If you choose the first option 0 Windows NT6 (Vista/7 and above) Setup,

then you will boot into the menu for selecting operating systems to install

That's all, if you have any questions, just ask!

Questions from readers regarding this article

Friends, the article was written a month ago and basically they ask such a question, it concerns the second part of the article, where we start working with the WinSetupFromUSB-1-6-beta2 program.

Question- Why the very first operation Windows copy 10 on a USB flash drive, I did not make it in the WinSetupFromUSB-1-6-beta2 program, but simply copied the Windows 10 files to a USB flash drive.

Answer- First, it can only latest version WinSetupFromUSB-1-6-beta2.

And secondly, I played it safe for the sake of the security of your data. Attentive readers have noticed that I'm working in WinSetupFromUSB-1-6-beta2 without formatting, not marking Auto format it with FBinst anywhere.

Yes, you can install Windows 10 on a USB flash drive in the program WinSetupFromUSB-1-6-beta2, but only if you follow our article and previously formatted the partition (F:) of the portable hard disk to the FAT32 file system using AOMEI Partition Assistant Standard Edition.

If you do not pre-format the partition (F:) of the portable hard drive to the FAT32 file system in the AOMEI Partition Assistant Standard Edition program (which we do at the beginning of the article), then the programWinSetupFromUSB-1-6-beta2 will delete all partitions on your USB portable hard drive. By the way, WinSetupFromUSB will warn you about it. If you click Yes, then all partitions on the portable hard drive will be deleted.

In this case, immediately restore partitions according to our .

If you do everything according to our article, then everything will be fine:

In the main window of WinSetupFromUSB-1-6-beta2 in the upper field, select the partition (F:) of our portable USB hard drive - WD My Password.

Put a tick on Auto format it with FBinst.

We mark the item FAT32

Check the box Vista/7/8/Server 2008/2012 based ISO and click on the explorer button on the right, we find iso image Windows 10 and press GO, the creation will take place bootable flash drive with Win 10, and then do everything according to our article, that is, add to Windows flash drive 8.1 PRO and other systems along with LiveCD.

Advantages external drives th drives - a large amount of memory, ease of use and compatibility with a huge number of the most diverse equipment - from TV to mobile phone.

The main functions of an external hard drive are not limited to expanding the memory on your computer or transferring information in large volumes. A portable hard drive is very convenient to use as a installation disk, to change the configuration working system and for storage backups files.

To select a portable hard drive with optimal performance, it is necessary to determine the goals and objectives for which it is planned to acquire it. Consider the main parameters that you need to pay attention to when choosing an external disk drive.

Capacity (memory capacity)

Of course, capacity is the most important characteristic of an external hard drive, which largely determines its capabilities. The amount of memory directly depends on the size of the device. A 2.5" drive can hold up to 2TB, while a 3.5" drive can hold up to 3TB. However, when choosing external drive Don't just focus on capacity. Be sure to commensurate the amount of memory drive with its cost and speed.

The size

As a rule, external hard drives are represented by standard dimensions - these are 2.5 or 3.5 inches diagonally.

2.5 inch representatives external drives have the advantage of being compact and light in weight. These discs fit easily in your pocket, providing their main advantage - mobility.

3.5-inch devices are heavier and larger, and typically require a power supply. Basically, they are used permanently, connected to a specific computer. The advantage of these external drives is much greater strength and durability compared to their smaller counterparts.

Performance

The speed of a portable hard drive is always evaluated in conjunction with the capacity and size and is determined by the rotation speed, access time and interface type. The fastest data exchange protocols are USB and eSATA, while their compatibility with other devices should be taken into account.

The average "rate of fire" of reading 2.5-inch external drives is 35 Mb / s, writing - up to 30 Mb / s. 3.5-inch drives are usually faster: in read mode - from 70 to 90 Mb / s, write - from 60 to 80 Mb / s. In other words, the choice in the direction of device mobility will require certain sacrifices in the form of a loss in disk speed.

Interface.

To date, there are several main interfaces - eSATA, FireWire, USB 3.0 and USB 2.0. The latter is the most popular, although comparatively slow. The main argument when choosing an interface is the requirements for device compatibility and its speed.

Many modern manufacturers, concerned about limited compatibility with USB interfaces 3.0, eSATA, and FireWire provide drives with the ability to work with multiple interfaces, and of course, such devices expand their scope and are more preferable to choose from.

Material, construction and design

The material from which the case is made is very important characteristic external storage. The advantage of metal over plastic is obvious, since the metal case will reliably protect the internal fragile device of the disk from mechanical damage and temperature fluctuations. The plastic case is undoubtedly cheaper, however, it is less durable and reliable.

The design of external drives is very diverse and its choice depends only on the aesthetic taste of the buyer. The standard rectangular shape is no longer the rule, and the market offers many original designs.

Manufacturer

ASUS, Transcend, Samsung, Verbatium, Toshiba are just some of the companies that have proven themselves in the field of external drives. Main specifications storage devices depend on the manufacturer very little. The choice of the manufacturer may be due only to the presence additional features, design, etc.

Additional features

Some important features that can be implemented in a portable hard drive are:

- the reset button, which is especially useful when installing and configuring the operating system, when the drive is included in the list of boot disks;

- an option to protect information that will prevent data loss due to careless or ill-considered actions;

- the presence of built-in cords;

- a display on the case that displays the occupied disk space, free volume, speed, temperature, etc.

The choice of a portable hard drive is mainly determined by the requirement or lack of mobility requirements along with the volume, size and speed of work. It is these parameters that you need to pay attention to first of all, looking for the best option.
