Tablet acer icon tab. Acer Iconia Tab A701 - Specifications

The tablet came to us in a huge dense light gray package, the dimensions of which (440x235x125 mm) would be the envy of many shoeboxes from under boots. But before I tell you what is included in the complete kit, it is necessary to explain what options and specifications are generally available.

The most affordable version of the Acer Iconia Tab W700 will cost 25,000 rubles. For this money, you get a tablet with an Intel Core i3 processor and a 64 GB SSD drive, and you get a case as a gift. A complete set of a tablet on a Core i3 + 64 GB SSD will cost 28,000 rubles, and for 35,000 a “tablet” version on a Core i5 + 128 GB SSD and a complete set are available.

Full set includes:

  • Tablet
  • Mains charger
  • HDMI to VGA adapter
  • Docking station with stand
  • Bluetooth keyboard
  • Case
  • Several DVDs (!?) for system recovery

Each item is neatly stowed in cardboard compartments. However, after unpacking the entire box, I could not find a place for the leg from the docking station, since it has a curved shape and therefore practically does not fit anywhere easily. Memories surfaced: as a child, I dismantled the telescope, but again I could not assemble it correctly. I think everyone has had such situations :)

Positioning

After the release of the eighth version of Microsoft Windows, almost all companies related to the production of tablets and laptops rushed to release their devices on this operating system. It seems to me that this is an absolutely right step, since there are more and more gadgets with touch screens: laptops are gradually being replaced by ultrabooks, and those, in turn, by tablets, on which "Win8" looks more logical than on desktops and non-touch "notebooks". Using Windows on tablets has become much more comfortable, as you definitely won’t miss the huge and bright tiles, and to close the application, now you don’t have to be a sniper, getting into a tiny cross.

Unfortunately, it is still difficult to determine the audience that will benefit from a tablet computer: Android or iOS tablets are suitable for home use - they have less weight, dimensions, they practically do not heat up and do not make noise. You won't be able to play on the "Win-tablet" either - so far the fillings are very weak. In the office, as a rule, there are desktop computers. As an option, use a tablet on Windows 8 in field conditions to perform specific tasks. Or, for example, for students who do not need to frequently edit documents, but it is desirable to have applications such as AutoCAD, MathCAD and other peculiar programs that are compatible only with Microsoft's OS. However, the question arises of the cost of such "pills". Students need cheap and cheerful, and for the majority of students in universities, 25-35 thousand rubles is a lot of money.

In general, I think that at present the positioning of such gadgets is somewhat blurry.

Design, dimensions, controls

Network adapter. It consists of a cable with a plug (length - 100 mm, diameter - 6.5 mm) and an adapter itself (dimensions 88x65x21 mm) with a one and a half meter cable (diameter 3.5 mm) for connecting to the device. Input - 100-240 V, 1.6 A, output - 19 V, 3.42 A. Model: PA-1650-80.

Keyboard. Made from silver painted plastic. Dimensions - 286x130x7 mm (in the thickest place - 16 mm). There are 66 keys in total. Made of white plastic. The size of each is 9x9x2 mm. Spaced apart at a distance of 3 mm. They have a clear pressure and a small stroke. Together with batteries, the device weighs about 400 grams.

On the top of the front panel there are two indicators: battery charge and operation. A little to the right is a mechanical on/off switch. On the back side there are four rubberized black feet, a "Connect" button (used to reconnect the keyboard) and a compartment for two AAA batteries.

The function buttons F1, F2, F3 ..., F12 are called by the combinations FN + Q, FN + W, FN + E ..., FN + "]".

Dock station. It is a plastic box with dimensions of 300x270x30 mm. The model is called V1JV1. The inside and back are white, the front side is silver. On the left inside are special connectors for power and USB. Additionally, there are three USB ports. Below are two cutouts for speakers. The tablet is inserted from right to left until it locks into place. For a stable position of the docking station on a horizontal surface, you need to insert a plastic leg from the back.

Tablet. Frankly, I did not expect that Acer could make such a cool and stylish case for an ordinary tablet. It is made almost entirely of unpainted aluminum with a slightly rough matte surface. Feelings are very pleasant. The usual shape is a rectangle with slightly rounded edges. On the back side there is a milky plastic insert. Behind it, apparently, are the antennas of the wireless interfaces.

Since the case design is monolithic (“unibody”), there are no complaints about the assembly: nothing backlash, does not creak, and does not crunch even with strong twisting. Within a month of using the W700, only a few shallow scratches appeared on its surface. The screen is protected by durable glass (according to some information - Gorilla Glass 2). By the way, a thin rubberized black strip runs along the edge of the display. As far as I understand, it has two important functions: the first - since it rises slightly, it protects the front side from damage; the second is shock-absorbing properties, i.e. when hitting the body, it reduces the impact of the contact of metal and glass. Fingerprints remain on the screen and are erased with great difficulty, and due to the fact that the surface is mirrored, traces are very noticeable.

Dimensions tablet Acer Iconia Tab W700 - 295 × 192 × 12 mm, and weight 940 grams. That is, you need to understand that the device is not small and not at all light, you just can’t read books or documents in the subway, after 10-15 minutes your hand gets tired. You can’t call the W700 a bedside either: personally, it’s more convenient for me to use a 650 g “tablet” from Apple or some even lighter plastic Samsung in a similar situation.

On the front panel there is a peephole of the front camera and a small indicator of its operation, at the bottom there is a mechanical button (dimensions 20x6x1mm) "Start". It is quite tight, so you have to press hard. Designed to return to the start screen or launch the previous application.

On the bottom side there are two speakers hidden under six holes on each side and covered with a red metal grille. In the center is a hardware reset button for the device.

Standard 3.5mm headphone jack, volume rocker and power button with LED. They rise a little above the body, are easily groped with fingers, the stroke is small.

On the upper side there are two grilles for the removal of warm air (active cooling system) and a non-fixed (moved to the side and returned to its original position) mechanical screen orientation blocker.

The power socket, full-sized USB port, microHDMI and the second microphone are on the left side.

On the back side, on the left, there is a camera eye and a small LED signaling its operation.

In general, Acer W700 has a very nice ergonomic design, presentable appearance and cool body materials.

Display

Diagonal display tablet Acer Iconia Tab W700 is 11.6 inches. Its physical size is 256x144 mm, the aspect ratio is 16x9, the resolution is quite high for such a diagonal - 1920x1080 pixels, while the density is 189 pixels per inch. It uses a high-quality CineCrystal IPS-matrix. The sensitivity and accuracy of the calibration is at a high level, the touch layer works out up to 10 simultaneous touches.

The viewing angles are maximum, the picture is not distorted at all, the brightness remains almost unchanged even under significant screen tilts. Brightness is adjustable over a wide range: from about 30 cd/m2 to 340 cd/m2. Naturally, there is a light sensor that adjusts the brightness quite smoothly and quickly. The contrast ratio is approximately 950:1.

All screen settings are familiar to Windows.

Battery

The tablet has a 3-section lithium-polymer (Li-Pol) battery with a capacity of 4850 mAh. Maximum power supply - 65 watts. The developer does not provide any data on autonomy. I used the tablet in various modes with different screen brightness. On average, the tablet "lived" for about 10 hours: the brightness was 50%, mail and twitter synchronization was on, every hour I browsed sites for 20-30 minutes, used the menu, launched office documents. In Internet surfing mode, the device worked for about 8 hours - this is about 40% of the screen brightness, and all synchronization is turned on. If you want to watch a movie (HD 720p, sound output to headphones), then count on 5 hours at maximum brightness and about two hours if you “hack” into not the most resource-intensive toys. However, I tested the W700 on Need For Speed Most Wanted. With NFS "battery" sat down after 1.5 hours (maximum brightness, sound output to speakers).

The most interesting thing is that the W700 lay in the "sleep" mode for about two weeks and did not discharge by one percent.

I can’t say that the figures are amazing, but almost all Android tablets often have less battery life. I would compare the autonomy of the Acer Iconia Tab W700 with the Apple iPad 4, of course, if you do not “strain” the first one by 100%.

Communication options

The device is equipped with Wi-Fi 802.11 a/b/g/n (2.4 / 5 GHz) and Bluetooth 4.0 wireless technologies. Both controllers operate on a Qualcomm Atheros chip (AR5BMD222) with a PCIe x1 interface.

During testing, no failures were observed: the Internet via Wi-Fi steadily “reached” the tablet, and the Bluetooth keyboard functioned without problems.

Memory

Unfortunately, the Acer W700 was not equipped with a card reader, and there is only one USB input. Those. by connecting a “flash drive” to a USB, you will have to wait with the rest of the devices.

The drive is a high-speed 128 GB SSD drive from Toshiba. The model is called THNSNS128GMCP. It uses 24nm flash memory, SATA-III 6Gb/s interface, power consumption is 3.9W. Brief technical characteristics:

  • Maximum read speed: just over 400MB/s
  • Maximum write speed: just over 230MB/s

RAM in the device 4 GB (dual-channel DDR3 SDRAM, 1333 MHz).

Camera

The device was equipped with two camera modules: the main one with 5 MP, the front one with 0.9 MP. The maximum photo resolution is 2592x1944 pixels, video is 1920x1080 pixels at 10 frames per second.

The photo quality is mediocre, comparable to budget phones. There is auto focus and manual focus. The minimum distance to the object is 30 mm. Video W700 writes no better: it greatly increases, the number of frames is only 10, the sound is gurgling and like from a barrel.

But I liked the front camera. For communication in Skype is quite suitable.

The performance index gives the device 5.4 points, the minimum value, which is natural, is gained by the graphics accelerator. The processor is rated at 6.9 points, the memory is 5.9, the graphics in games are 6.3, and the hard drive is 8.1.

CPU-Z Data

The usual integrated graphics of the Ivy Bridge processor line - Intel HD Graphics 4000 - also acts as a graphics accelerator. Compared to Intel HD Graphics 3000, HD4000 has been redesigned and offers DirectX 11 capabilities. Theoretically, it can show performance 60% higher than HD3000.

I think that neither the processor nor the video card really needs a wide introduction. For those who are interested, the following data: the game Mass Effect 3 (low quality) at a resolution of 1366x768 produces 23 - 33 frames per second, Dirt 3 (low quality) - 22 - 28 frames per second, Deus EX HR - 19 - 31 fps , Battlefield 3 - about 25 fps. In general, you can play, in principle, but at the minimum settings and at low resolution.

When decoding FullHD video, there are no problems: the videos are played smoothly without the slightest lag.

As for the noise, frankly speaking, even on the heaviest applications, the coolers did not overclock so much that they could be heard. Well, a warm breeze - yes, it came out.

Software platform

The Acer Iconia Tab W700 tablet runs on the Microsoft Windows 8 64-bit operating system. I will not express my impression of the OS, since this is a purely subjective opinion. In general, cute and nimble, but not always intuitive and logical.

An additional interesting feature was the proprietary original graphic design for viewing photos, videos, documents and managing wireless interfaces. In order to launch this interface, you need to touch the screen with all fingers of one hand.

I would rate the volume of the built-in speakers at 4 out of 5: you can hear well at a distance of two meters, you don’t have to strain your hearing. The quality is adequate, considering that we have a tablet in front of us.

Conclusion

Ordinary bulky laptops are gradually being replaced by lightweight ultrabooks with the same filling, and over time they will be replaced by even lighter tablets. I like the current trend of making mobile devices easier to use, and the use of touch screens has played a big role in this. However, the tipping point has now come where we already have powerful tablet computers, but they are still relatively large for comfortable use in all situations. Therefore, I believe that it is difficult to attribute such devices to any class and clearly define the circle of consumers.

The Acer Iconia Tab W700 gadget was liked, first of all, by its appearance, case materials and high-quality screen. There are probably no negative points. If you think otherwise, please unsubscribe in the comments, I will read it with pleasure.

Acer continues to expand into the tablet market. After the Iconia Tab A200 (an updated version of the A500) and the A510 based on NVIDIA Tegra 3, the company announced the A701 and A700 models. They are of particular interest: they are the first Android tablets with a Full HD screen. Note that hereinafter, FullHD refers to screens capable of playing video with a full resolution of 1920x1080.

True, we note that these two tablets have not yet gone on sale (the presentation was about July). Therefore, a situation is not ruled out in which Acer will overtake Huawei: the start of sales of Huawei MediaPad 10 FHD with a Full HD screen is also scheduled for July (the manufacturer presented it to journalists in mid-May).

In general, there is no doubt that in the second half of 2012 we will see a number of tablets with Full HD screens. After the release of The New iPad, manufacturers simply have nowhere to go, because in order to compete with Apple, it is necessary to release not just a product of similar quality, but a better one (or the same, but much cheaper). Now, in fact, it turns out that the New iPad simply does not have worthy competitors. However, we repeat, the situation should change in the second half of the year. Acer Iconia Tab A700/701 and Huawei MediaPad 10 FHD are the first potential competitors. Moreover, the Chinese will certainly put pressure on the price, so Acer will have a hard time. And at the end of summer or autumn (there is no exact information yet), ASUS Transformer Pad Infinity will appear - the successor of Eee Pad Transformer Prime, only with a Full HD screen. It will most likely be more expensive than Acer and Huawei, but with the ability to connect a docking station that turns the tablet into a laptop and expands its capabilities. All in all, it's going to be a tough fight.

For clarity, we put the characteristics of the main competitors in the table. At the same time, we removed the traditional “Price” column, since out of all four models presented in the table, prices are known only for the new iPad.

* - according to the manufacturer

So, on the side of the Acer device, the presence of Micro-HDMI and, apparently, a more powerful SoC than Huawei, and certainly more versatile (the Chinese manufacturer will use a chip of its own design, and this, to put it mildly, is a pig in a poke; it is unknown which movies and games will run on it, and which will not). But the rear camera from Acer is worse than all competitors. Also, the disadvantage of Acer is the inability to work in 4G networks. In fairness, we note that although formally the iPad has support for 4G (LTE), however, it will not be able to work in Russian networks, since it is designed for a different frequency range. But Huawei and ASUS are likely to be able to, which will give them some advantage. Acer also loses the comparison in terms of dimensions: it is thicker and heavier than its competitors (except that you can’t say for sure about the mass of Huawei, but about the thickness - I held it in my hands, it’s definitely thinner). However, Acer's design has its own appeal. That's just the design we're talking about.

Design

Since the copy that came to us is an engineering sample not intended for sale, it arrived without a box, but with a Micro-USB to USB-host adapter. According to the manufacturer, commercial models will also be equipped with the same adapter. Thus, Acer compensates for the lack of a full-sized USB port in the A700/701 (it was the full-sized USB that was one of the distinguishing features of the A500 and A200 models).

Like the Iconia Tab A200, the tablet is massive and heavy. Apparently, the entire line of Acer tablets in 2012 received approximately the same body (with some differences, of course, but the general trend is obvious).

These are rounded corners and edges, a soft-touch plastic cover, a rather massive overall appearance (Acer, unlike Samsung and ASUS, obviously does not pursue the minimum thickness and weight of the device).

The location of connectors and buttons is different from the Acer Iconia Tab A200. On the right is Micro-HDMI (this is a big plus!), slots for SIM-card and microSD. Both slots are hidden under a lid that you have to pry with your fingernail to open. In the engineering sample, this lid did not open as tight as in the Iconia Tab A200, let's hope that it will be the same in the commercial version.

On the bottom we see Micro-USB for connecting to a PC and recharging, as well as a Reset hole.

On the left is the Power button and a 3.5mm headphone jack.

Top - volume rocker and screen lock lever, as well as a microphone hole.

Screen

Obviously, the 1920×1200 (WUXGA) resolution screen is the main feature of the Acer Iconia Tab A701. Previously, we only saw Full HD resolution on the iPad. True, for the sake of justice, it is worth recognizing that the density of dots per inch on the iPad screen is still slightly higher, since Acer has a slightly larger diagonal, and the number of dots on each side is less. But, however, compared to the resolution of 1280×800, which became the standard last year, this is a big step forward.

A detailed examination of the screen using measuring instruments was carried out by the editor of the "Monitors" and "Projectors and TV" sections Alexey Kudryavtsev. Here is his conclusion.

The screen of the tablet is covered with a glass plate with a mirror-smooth surface, and, judging by the reflection of bright light sources in it, there is no anti-glare filter or it is very weak. A special oleophobic (grease-repellent) coating is applied to the outer surface of the screen, so fingerprints are removed more easily and appear at a slower rate than in the case of ordinary glass.

With manual brightness control, its maximum value was 265 cd / m², the minimum - 33 cd / m². As a result, at maximum brightness in bright daylight, the screen brightness may not be enough, but the minimum brightness will allow you to comfortably use the tablet even in complete darkness. The backlight brightness is automatically adjusted by the light sensor (it is located to the left of the front camera) - in complete darkness it reduces the brightness to at least 33-57 cd / m² (depending on the previous history of the brightness value), in a very brightly lit environment - increases to the maximum value. The work of automatic brightness control should be recognized as adequate and fast.

Brightness control, apparently, is carried out using pulse-width modulation of the LED power supply, but the modulation has a high frequency, and there is apparently a smoothing filter in the backlight power circuit. As a result, the backlight at reduced brightness is modulated at a frequency of 18 kHz and with an amplitude of less than 100%, so there is no visible flicker. However, if you look closely, then on halftone fills you can hardly, but still notice a slight flicker of vertical stripes one pixel thick. Perhaps this effect is caused by the peculiarities of the algorithm for changing the polarity of the LC cells or dynamic color mixing.

This tablet uses an IPS type matrix, as a result, the screen has very good viewing angles without inverting shades and without significant color shift even at large deviations of the gaze from the perpendicular to the screen. True, which is typical for any IPS-matrix, the black field, when deviated diagonally, is significantly brightened and, which is no longer found in all IPS-type matrices, acquires a noticeable purple hue.

It is not our policy to conduct a direct comparison with competitors, since we believe that based on the data presented, the reader is able to draw his own conclusions, but as an exception, we will compare the screen of this tablet with the screen of the new iPad, using the new data on viewing angles.

To find out how the screen brightness changes when deviated from the perpendicular to the screen, we took a series of measurements of the brightness of black, white and grayscale in the center of the screen in a wide range of angles, deviating the sensor axis in the horizontal and diagonal (from corner to corner) directions. We excluded the vertical direction, since the height of the 10-inch screen does not allow us to measure viewing angles in the used range of angles using our setup. Since the properties of the IPS matrix are exactly symmetrical (excluding local defects) relative to the vertical axis, to save time, measurements were carried out only with a deviation to the right, but for clarity and ease of comparison, the graphs were completed by symmetrical reflection of the curves relative to the vertical axis. Visually, at least, the screen of the new iPad is not symmetrical in properties relative to the longitudinal axis, so the viewing angles were measured diagonally to the right and down and to the right and up.

The dependence of the brightness of halftones (0% - black, 100% - white) in the center of the screen on the deviation of the sensor axis (negative values - to the left, positive values - to the right) from the normal to the screen in the horizontal plane:

The dependence of the brightness of halftones (0% - black, 100% - white) in the center of the screen on the deviation of the sensor axis (negative values - to the left, positive values - to the right) from the normal to the screen in the diagonal plane:

The dependence of the contrast (the ratio of the brightness of the white field to the brightness of the black) in the center of the screen on the deviation of the sensor axis from the normal to the screen in the horizontal and diagonal planes:

Black field brightness:

Decreasing brightness by 50% of the maximum value:

We note a gradual decrease in brightness when deviating from the perpendicular to the screen in the horizontal direction, while the graphs do not intersect in the entire range of measured angles. With a deviation in the diagonal direction, the behavior of the brightness of the shades has a similar character. When it comes to dimming, the viewing angles of The New iPad are slightly better, as the brightness drops to 50% of its maximum value at slightly higher angles in this tablet's case. In the diagonal direction, the brightness of the black field begins to increase sharply when deviated from the perpendicular to the screen already at 20 degrees in the case of the Acer Iconia Tab A701 and at only 45 degrees in the case of The New iPad. Since the brightness of the tablets varies, for clarity, we present graphs of the brightness of the black field as a percentage of the maximum brightness:

These graphs confirm what is also visible in visual comparison - when you deviate your gaze diagonally, the black box shows up on the new iPad to a much lesser extent. As a result, the contrast in the range of angles of ±82 degrees for the diagonal direction in the case of the Acer Iconia Tab A701 falls below 10:1 with a deviation of more than 72 degrees, and in the case of The New iPad it does not fall below 50:1.

To quantitatively characterize the change in color reproduction, we carried out colorimetric measurements for white, red, green and blue fields in full screen. The measurements were carried out in the range of angles from 0 (the sensor is directed perpendicular to the screen) to 45 degrees with a step of 5 degrees. The obtained intensity values were recalculated into delta E deviation relative to the measurement of each field at a perpendicular position of the sensor relative to the screen. The results are presented below:

It follows from the graphs that only in the case of the Acer Iconia Tab A701 and only the blue color with a diagonal deviation undergoes a significant hue shift. At the same time, the color shift on the screen of The New iPad as a whole is somewhat less than that of the Acer Iconia Tab A701.

As a result, at least in terms of viewing angles, the screen of the Acer Iconia Tab A701 is slightly worse than the screen of the new iPad.

This concludes the comparison of the screens, since the data below is also available in the article about the new iPad.

When viewed perpendicularly, the uniformity of the black field is good. The black-white-black transition response time is 53.1ms (45.7ms on + 7.4ms off). The transition between halftones 25% and 75% (according to the numerical value of the color) takes a total of 30 ms.

The gamma curve constructed from 32 points did not reveal a significant blockage either in the highlights or in the shadows, and the exponent of the approximating power function is 2.26, which is quite close to the standard value of 2.2, however, the real gamma curve deviates from the power dependence:

Contrast is high - 970:1. The color gamut is very close to sRGB:

The spectra look typical for devices with LED illumination:

The color temperature balance is good - shades of gray have a color temperature not much different from 6500 K (the range close to black can be ignored, since color reproduction is not so important in it, and the measurement error of color characteristics is high.). Although the deviation from the blackbody spectrum (ΔE) is relatively large due to the excess of the green component. This contributes to an increase in brightness due to some deterioration in color reproduction:

However, the color temperature and ΔE change little over the entire area of the gray scale that matters, so visually the color balance does not cause any complaints. By the combination of parameters, the screen definitely deserves a very high rating.

I’ll add on my own that I personally like the screen of the New iPad more. But it is possible that the matter here is in the software part. Apple has optimized iOS and all pre-installed applications for high resolution. Yes, and third-party application developers have tried to release updated versions with a resolution for Retina Display as soon as possible. Was the same careful optimization in the case of Android? Not sure. However, we will talk about software later.

The screen recognizes ten-finger multitouch.

The actual size of the sides of the usable screen area is 21.7 × 13.6 cm. The diagonal is 25.7 cm (10.1 inches).

The tablet runs on the already familiar NVIDIA Tegra 3. And although this is not even the second tablet on this SoC, nevertheless, Tegra 3 is still perceived as a super-relevant novelty.

Before we tested ASUS Eee Pad Transformer Prime and HTC One X smartphone on Tegra 3. Comparing the performance of an Acer tablet with a smartphone, perhaps, does not make sense, but with an ASUS tablet it certainly does. Well, with the Acer Iconia Tab A200 (on Tegra 2), for clarity, it also makes sense to compare. So they will appear in the table. But before we start testing, let's make a reservation that we had an engineering sample with preliminary firmware, so the results should be treated with a grain of salt. Perhaps a commercial copy will be more productive.

So, in the Quadrant Standard, the tablet scored 3603 points. This is one of the best results, although the Trasformer Prime record could not be broken.

The result in SunSpider 0.9.1 disappointed us: 2504.6 ms is less than even the Iconia Tab A200. However, we will repeat the repeatedly expressed idea that the SunSpider is not quite indicative of today's powerful tablets.

*Here and below for ASUS Eee Pad Transformer Prime are the test results on the latest firmware version (the operating system has been updated to Android ICS). The results of this tablet on the original firmware with Android 3.2 were slightly better in most tests.

But in the processor test, the Super Pi performed even better than the ASUS Eee Pad Transformer Prime on the same SoC. So far this is a record.

The table below shows the results of all three plates rounded to the nearest 1 second.

In the complex AnTuTu Benchmark 2.7.3, the tablet scored 10165 points, which is almost identical to the results shown by the ASUS flagship.

But here the difference with tablets on Tegra 2 is clearly manifested (A701 and Transformer Prime bypass them more than twice).

And finally, the performance results of the graphics subsystem in NenaMark2 (v2.2).

Here they just turned out to be very strange. For comparison, ASUS Eee Pad Transformer Prime in Nenamark 2 is gaining 47.1 fps. And this is much more plausible, since the graphics capabilities of the new NVIDIA chip are the main advantage compared to Tegra 2. Therefore, the relatively low result of the Acer Iconia Tab A701 should be attributed to the imperfection of the preliminary firmware. As well as small lags in other tests.

Operating system and applications

The tablet will come preloaded with Android 4.0, like all other 2012 Acer Android tablets.

We will not write about pre-installed software in detail, because, we repeat, we had an engineering sample with test firmware, and in the final version, the software set may change. However, one application is still worth mentioning. This is a very nice file manager.

I hope it will also be present in the final version.

However, speaking of software, one cannot avoid the question of how Adnroid software is optimized for high resolution. Here the impressions are twofold. On the one hand, everything looks quite correct: icons do not seem blurry, fonts both in the OS interface and in programs (both pre-installed and taken from the Google Play Store) look normal. On the other hand, it is still impossible to talk about some special software optimization for high resolution. That is, to put it simply, the amount of visual information does not increase, new details do not appear. Of course, both programs and games originally created for high resolution will gradually appear. But the process of filling the Google Play Store with such applications will obviously be slower than in the case of the iPad and the App Store.

Offline work

Unfortunately, the sample did not reflect the real situation with battery life. Therefore, we omit this question. But, perhaps, we will return to it after the product enters the market. The tablet will be sold with a 9800 mAh battery.

Camera

Unlike Acer Iconia Tab A200 novelty is equipped with two cameras. True, the resolution of the rear camera is small: 5 megapixels. This is not enough for a flagship model (all competitors of a similar level are equipped with 8 megapixel cameras). On the other hand, if it allows you to reduce the cost even a little, then it may be fully justified.

The main thing is that the quality of the resulting images is very decent (by the standards of mobile devices). Of course, the detail is not as high as we would like, but there is almost no digital noise and dirt. This is clearly seen in the fragment of the image above.

The tablet can take panoramas, but the resolution of panoramas is very low (the original image below is available by clicking).

We also tried to shoot a sheet with text (magazine page) on the rear camera of the tablet. At the same time, the magazine was placed on a table standing by the window - so that daylight fell on it (this is a condition necessary for the repeatability and verifiability of the test). The original photo can be seen by clicking on the snippet below.

The quality is not bad, all the characters are distinguishable, but some dirt is still present.

Despite the low quality of photographs, the rear camera shoots video with Full HD resolution and very decent quality. A 30-second video filmed with the Acer iconia Tab A701 rear camera can be downloaded (3GPP format, size 75.9 MB).

conclusions

The Acer Iconia Tab A701 is the first Android tablet with a Full HD display that we have tested. And, I must say, in general, he pleased us and strengthened our opinion that Acer's market share in the tablet segment in the second half of the year will not only not be less, but more than before. Acer can only be praised for being among the first to introduce new technologies and present them to the user at a reasonable price. At least that's how it used to be. How fair the price will be for the A701 - we have yet to find out. And, note, this will be a key factor. Since this model will have to compete with two very serious competitors: Full HD tablets from ASUS and Huawei. If Acer manages to price lower than ASUS and roughly on par with Huawei, then the A701 (and its twin brother A700) will emerge victorious from this fight.

But to whom all Android tablets with a Full HD screen are losing so far is the new iPad (by the way, which has recently gone on official sale in Russia). On the side of the iPad is not only a better screen (we are talking about the density of dots per inch and viewing angles), but, more importantly, applications (including games) that use high resolution to the fullest. Understandably, most of the apps in the App Store haven't been optimized for Retina Display yet. But at the same time, there are already great games with high-resolution graphics, and the process of replacing old versions of applications with new ones will go very quickly. On Android, everything will be much slower - precisely because of the large fragmentation of the platform.

Therefore, you need to clearly understand why exactly you are taking an Android tablet with a Full HD screen right now (that is, this summer or autumn, until Full HD becomes a common standard for tablets). I see the following options here. First of all, watching movies - and just for this application, the same Acer Iconia Tab A701 is better suited than the iPad, since the screen has an aspect ratio of 16:10, which fits well with the "cinematic" aspect ratio of 16:9, and movies do not it needs to be transcoded (even without hardware acceleration, Tegra 3 pulls Full HD video). In addition, this, of course, is a reserve for the future. In the end, such an expensive toy is bought not for a year, but for at least two or three, so if you are aiming to buy a 10-inch Android tablet and are not very constrained in funds, then looking at regular-resolution models is, by and large, doesn't make sense. But which model to choose from those with a Full HD screen is a question that we cannot answer yet (since, we repeat, the Acer Iconia Tab A701 is the first such tablet we have for testing). But we can say for sure that high resolution is the future.

Equipment

  • Tablet
  • Charger
  • PC connection cable (also part of the charger)
  • Tablet stand

Included with the device is a simple stand with two angles of inclination. Inexpensive, but very necessary addition, I liked such attention to detail.

Appearance, materials, controls, assembly

For this tablet, Acer decided to use a win-win combination of black and gold, which is usually used in premium versions of devices (for example, with more memory). At first glance, the tablet looks great, but when you take the model in your hands, all the premium feeling disappears. The plastic used on the back cover tactilely resembles cheap budget solutions. Although it is practical, it does not help the perception much.

The company has been experimenting with materials for a long time (I like their fabric-styled plastic the most), but I didn’t like the plastic in the Tab 10 specifically. However, I will immediately note that this is a matter of taste, because, I repeat, from the point of view of practicality, this is a good choice.

This model has an interesting arrangement of control elements. For example, the volume rocker was moved to the left side of the display frame, and a button was installed on the right to switch sound modes. By the way, the device has four speakers, so I'll talk about the sound in a separate section.

The memory card slot and microHDMI port are hidden under a gold cap. By the way, at first I thought that this gilded plate could not be removed in any way, and looked at this groove with suspicion. Fortunately, this point was clearly described in the instructions. Potential buyers, please note that the microSD slot is hidden very cleverly, it is not visible on the move.

On the left are the minijack and microUSB port, and on top are the power button and the microphone hole.

Interestingly, despite the feeling of cheap plastic, I did not notice any crunch in the case, the tablet is perfectly assembled.

Dimensions

I've been repeating for years now that Acer tablets are usually a little thicker and heavier than other manufacturers, but every year this difference is getting smaller. This year, for example, when compared with a direct competitor, the difference is minimal.

As for the dimensions, I will say this: they are standard for a ten-inch tablet. It is moderately thin and relatively light.

Screen

We are rarely pleased with FHD-resolution in the segment up to 15 thousand rubles, so we will immediately write it down as a plus of the screen. The second advantage is the oleophobic coating, which Acer used to skimp on in the budget segment. But the anti-reflective coating is either absent or very poor. You can see your reflection in room lighting even at maximum brightness, and on the street the display is almost completely blind.

Operating system

The tablet runs Android 6.0 with minimal additions from Acer. We already wrote about 6.0 itself, but I’ll tell you about the additions below.

With the EZ WakeUp app, you can set the display to turn on with a gesture of five fingers or tapping with two thumbs (the second option is only available for portrait orientation).

The EZ Utilities program allows you to change the font size and interface in the system.

And with EZ Snap, you can take a screenshot or add an article to Pocket with a three-finger pinch.

Otherwise, we have the classic Android 6.0 with all its pluses and minuses.

Performance

The chipset in the device is average, but it works, despite this, quite quickly. Tables scroll quickly, web pages scroll quickly, I did not notice any special jamming. During productive tasks, the upper left corner of the tablet heats up.

Offline work

The results of the tablet are average, in everyday use with an hour and a half of activity, you can expect three to four days of use, depending on the brightness.

Camera

There is a funny situation with the camera, the manufacturer directly highlighted it in gold, as if implying some superpowers of the module, but in fact we have an ordinary tablet camera with autofocus, it is only suitable for shooting text, but you shouldn’t count on more, so I won’t even give examples of shots. But the front camera is perfect for video calls.

Wireless interfaces

An interesting situation, there is no mobile Internet in the tablet, but the GPS module was added, it works well, I had no complaints about it. Another nice thing is the presence of dual-band Wi-Fi.

stereo speakers

The tablet has four speakers, they are located on the front side. I really liked the sound quality and the maximum volume level. When DTS-HD technology is turned on, the sound becomes more voluminous and juicy, the emphasis, of course, goes to low frequencies. But the tablet is also great for classical piano compositions. Another advantage is the absence of wheezing at maximum volume. In general, in terms of sound, Acer did their best.

Conclusion

In retail for this model they ask for 15,000 rubles. For this money, you get a tablet with a high-resolution display, an average IPS matrix, an oleophobic coating, good battery life and cool stereo speakers. Of the significant claims, I will single out only a poor anti-reflective coating and “cheap” (subjectively) plastic. For some, these shortcomings will be significant, but let's not forget that there are practically no competitors at this price, or rather, it is the only one.

This, of course, is about the Lenovo Tab 2 A10 70L. This tablet is slightly thinner, lighter, has a slightly better display, but significantly worse speakers, and it also has LTE support. For this you will have to overpay 2,000-3,000 rubles. On the one hand, the overpayment is insignificant, and on the other hand, it is 15-18%, and not everyone needs mobile Internet.

In any case, if you choose between ten-inch tablets in the 15-18 thousand segment, then, apart from these two, there is nothing particularly interesting with FHD resolution.

Acer is able, if it wants to, to produce inexpensive and at the same time quite high-quality electronics. The Iconia Tab line of tablets is one of those products - with good performance and a reasonable price. True, Acer tablets have never been very popular, not least because of weak marketing.

July 27, as you know, will begin the main sporting event of the four years - the Olympic Games. What is not a good reason to promote? Official Olympic smartphones and tablets, sponsors and partners, patrons and patrons... Anybody will do "title", if only the brand flashed more often on TV in stories about the Olympics, and next to the logo or trademark, the famous five rings could be slapped.

Olympic symbols have not bypassed the box of the Acer Iconia Tab 510 and even the body of the tablet. The manufacturer diligently emphasizes its involvement in the Games. What does the tablet have to do with the Olympics and will the symbols of the Games help increase sales of Iconia Tab devices, let's try to figure it out in this review.

Appearance

Outwardly, the Iconia Tab 510 is nothing remarkable: the usual rectangle with smooth lines, quite thin (less than 11 mm), moderately strict, there are not even silver inserts, like last year's Iconia Tab 500. And although there is nothing to catch the eye, the manufacturing materials the devices are delightful. Thanks to the rubberized textured plastic case, the tablet is very pleasant to the touch. The material is elastic, even a little soft, there are no scratches on it, as well as fingerprints. Perhaps this is one of the most practical body designs among all tablets.

Controls are traditional for Android tablets. On the top end there is a dual volume button and a lock lever, on the left - the power key and a 3.5 mm audio jack, on the right side there is a microHDMI port and a microSD memory card slot hidden behind a flap. On the bottom is a pair of speakers, a microUSB port, and a reset button. The tablet comes with an adapter for a standard USB connector, so you can connect a regular USB flash drive if you wish.

On the rear panel we find a 5-megapixel camera eye, but it is not it that attracts attention, but the manufacturer's logo and the Olympic rings. Below is an indication of Dolby Digital Plus technology. Not to say that the sound in the tablet is particularly high quality. It is really good, at the level of competitors, but nothing more.

There is nothing remarkable on the front panel. In addition to the display, there is a front camera and a couple of logos - Acer and Iconia Tab.

The device weighs about 700 g. This is not critical for a model with a 10-inch display, but there are still lighter tablets. The same one, for example, is lighter by almost 120 g. It seems that the difference is not significant, but it will make itself felt after 10 minutes of working with the Iconia Tab 510.

The assembly of the Taiwanese tablet is excellent: nothing creaks or staggers anywhere, all the details fit perfectly to each other, the only plug sits tightly, the buttons are securely located in the recesses and are pressed tightly, but without causing discomfort. It is noticeable that Acer paid a lot of attention to such trifles. Without exaggeration, the assembly of the model is at the level of top products from more famous Android tablet manufacturers, or even better.

Display and camera

The Iconia Tab 510 has a standard 10.1″ LCD with a resolution of 1280×800 pixels. It is impossible to call the display outstanding. However, this is not a cheap Chinese screen either. These panels are found in most mid-range tablets, while they are inferior to IPS displays with wider viewing angles and high contrast.

If you do not compare the screen with more expensive models, there are no special complaints about it. The colors fade slightly only at a very large slope, in general, the brightness and contrast are enough for all everyday tasks, the color reproduction is close to natural, pixelation at this resolution is noticeable only when very close to the eyes - no one will look at the tablet display like that.

The model is equipped with a 5-megapixel camera with autofocus, but no flash. Shooting with a tablet is something else. Apparently, therefore, manufacturers are in no hurry to install high-quality photomodules in such devices. Tablet Iconia Tab 510 in this sense is no exception. In most cases, the pictures are noisy and fuzzy. A more or less normal photo can be taken outdoors with good ambient light, but even in this case you should not expect any miracles.

Interface, functionality

The device is running Android 4.0.3 with proprietary radial interface Touch Ring. The developers used the ring as a control already on the lock screen: by touching the circle, you can unlock the tablet by moving your finger to the right, or immediately launch one of four applications (you can determine which programs these will be in the settings menu yourself).

In addition to the virtual buttons that are standard for Ice Cream Sandwich, there is a green dot in the center of the system bar. Pressing it brings up a circle with four shortcuts to the most requested apps, a search button in the center, and a volume slider. The necessary programs for quick access, again, can be determined by yourself. The most impressive thing in such a radial menu is the browser, or rather, its bookmarks, which can be scrolled around the circle.

Otherwise, the interface is not much different from "naked" Android 4.0: control buttons "Back home" and "Multitasking" in the lower left corner, system information with a notification panel - in the lower right, search and access buttons to the main menu - at the top.

Acer stinted on the installation of branded and third-party applications and did the right thing. All the same, users rarely like the manufacturer's choice, because you can create a list of the necessary programs from Google Play yourself.

Acer felt that Iconia Tab 510 buyers could not do without the Astro file manager, the Aupeo online radio service, the Polaris Office office suite, the annoying McAfee antivirus and the music track recognition service. In addition, the tablet received a proprietary clear.fi program for sharing content via DLNA and an Acer Print application for printing to a printer via a Wi-Fi connection or USB.

Performance and Battery

Unlike its predecessor, the Iconia Tab 500, the new product is based on the . This means that the tablet received four computing cores capable of operating at frequencies up to 1.3 GHz, and one auxiliary involved in undemanding applications or to work in the background. The device is also equipped with 1 GB of RAM and 32 GB of internal memory. Recall that the drive can be expanded using a microSD card.

We have already seen several times on the examples of tablets and smartphones that Nvidia Tegra 3 perfectly copes with the appetites of both the Android OS itself and the most demanding applications. In most tests, the Iconia Tab 510 showed results that were identical or very close to those of the Asus Eee Pad Transformer Prime based on the same platform. For some reason, only in the Quadrant benchmark, the novelty is seriously lagging behind its competitor. However, there is no need to complain about the performance of the tablet in real conditions: even the most "heavy" games from the Tegra Zone section run without problems.

Iconia Tab 510 is equipped with a 9800 mAh battery, one charge of which is enough for 8 and a half hours of Full HD video playback with wireless modules disabled and the screen backlight at maximum level. The result is about the same as the same Transformer Prime without a docking station.

It is worth clarifying that we tested a tablet model with Bluetooth 2.1 and Wi-Fi modules, but a modification with a 3G modem - Iconia Tab 511 - should also appear on sale.

Conclusion

Note that during the review of the Acer Iconia Tab 510, the Olympic symbols had to be mentioned only once - in the section on appearance. All that the device has in common with the Summer Games is the catchy logos on the box and the body of the tablet. There are no additional accessories or at least one thematic application in the Iconia Tab 510. In essence, all "Olympic" tablet is that the manufacturer has decided to inform users about its sponsorship of the Games. But how many buyers will be inspired by this fact?

Otherwise, the Iconia Tab 510 makes a good impression. The best hardware platform to date, a good screen, a simple but not intrusive shell for the OS, nice materials and high build quality.

Iconia Tab 510 has two main competitors among Android tablets - Samsung Galaxy Tab 2 and Asus Transformer Pad TF300T (almost the same Transformer Prime, only in a plastic case). Compared with "Korean" the device from Acer wins in terms of workmanship and battery life, but for the same price, the Galaxy Tab 2 offers a built-in 3G module (however, you will have to be content with only 16 GB of memory). The Transformer Pad is more expensive, but boasts an IPS-matrix, an 8-megapixel camera and the ability to connect a docking station in the form of a keyboard with an additional battery.
The source of information:

There is a tablet computer in almost every home, as once in every house you could find a system unit with a monitor. Tablets have managed to win over a large part of the market, since no one needs big and noisy machines when much more compact devices cover the bulk of the needs.

At the same time, like computers, tablets quickly lost popularity, they no longer inspire enthusiasm and are bought as bedside gadgets (to watch a movie in the evening or let a child play). In this regard, expensive and advanced devices like the iPad are gradually loosening their grip. Most budget devices are enough. One of these tablets will be discussed in this review - Acer Iconia Tab A1 811.

Equipment

In the box from under the device, in addition to the gadget itself, there is a small brochure. In fact, an instruction that is suitable only for those who have never used such gadgets at all, and even then it is unlikely to come in handy.

Also included are: a charger (block for connecting to the mains) and a USB cable (for charging and synchronizing with a computer).

Unfortunately, the box was not found: no cases, no headphones, no other accessories.

Fortunately, all this goodness is easy to find on the Web. The tablet was quite popular in its time, and the industrious Chinese riveted a lot of accessories suitable for it. Cases, protective films, all kinds of stands, styluses - in general, everything your heart desires.

Device design

Dimensions: 209 x 147 x 11 millimeters.

Tablet Acer Iconia Tab A1 811 has a classic design. The case is made of ordinary “soft-touch” plastic. The case is not too strong, prone to contamination, slightly backlash.

The gadget turned out to be quite thick, almost 12 millimeters, and its weight is 430 grams, which is not bad for a device of this size. The bezels around the display are a little disappointing, they are too massive compared to what users of modern devices are used to seeing. The same iPad mini looks much more compact. At the same time, the frames save you from accidental clicks and have a positive effect on the grip, thanks to them the tablet lies in the hands more confidently.

Device display

On the front panel of the tablet Acer Iconia Tab A1 811 is a display panel with a diagonal of 7.9 inches. The display is not of high quality, despite the fact that IPS-matrix is used. The picture is not calibrated, the color rendition suffers greatly, and the resolution is not impressive either, only 1024 x 768 pixels (160 dots per inch).

The display is covered with glossy glass, which is in no way protected from glare (on a bright sunny day, seeing something on the device will be an almost impossible task, not to mention direct sunlight).

The touchscreen 811 cannot be called “wooden”, but at the same time it often confuses positioning, reacts with a delay or does not react at all, which is especially noticeable when typing and in games. There is a display panel that reduces soiling and allows you to easily remove fingerprints from it.

Device performance and memory

The heart of the device was the famous Chinese chip from MediaTek - MT8389. The processor works with four cores, two of which are productive, used in games and complex programs, and the other two are energy efficient, used in light applications and in idle mode. The clock frequency of the processor reaches an acceleration of up to 1200 megahertz.

Also, 1 gigabyte of RAM and 8 gigabytes of main memory (in the Acer Iconia Tab A1 811 8gb version) were tucked under the cover of the gadget. Most of the main memory is occupied by the operating system, since the situation is smoothed out by the presence of support for MicroSDHC memory cards up to 32 gigabytes. It is important to note that Android version 4 does not yet work with memory cards, so you can only store documents, photos, music on it, but you cannot install software.

Graphics processing is handled by the PowerVR SGX554, which has proven itself in premium devices such as the iPhone.

Performance, in general, should be sufficient for most simple tasks. Trying to play complex games on this tablet is not worth it, they will either not start at all, or they will run at an extremely low frame rate and frequent freezes. Such a small amount of RAM greatly contributes to the unloading of programs, which means that they will be launched again each time (this process takes time, therefore, the tablet will work very slowly).

Device autonomy

The Acer Iconia Tab A1 811 3g is equipped with a rather modest battery. The battery capacity was only 4960 mA / h, which can provide no more than 7 hours of operation (at an average load).

The operating time depends entirely on how the gadget is used, on network coverage (if a cellular module is used), on running applications, and on the use of geolocation services (GPS).

Image quality

The camera is far from the most important aspect in a tablet computer, and it is pointless to hope for luxurious photos in it. The Acer Iconia Tab A1 811 has two cameras. Main (rear) with a resolution of 5 megapixels and additional (front) with a resolution of 0.3 megapixels. Both cameras perform rather a utilitarian function.

Using the main camera, you can take a photo for a notebook or a scan of a document. The front camera is suitable for video calls (selfie fans have nothing to do with it). There is no autofocus. For some reason, the developers decided not to add such a feature, which greatly aggravates the situation and greatly spoils the impression of using the camera.

Operating system

The entire line, including the Acer Iconia Tab 811 and others, runs on the 4th generation Android, named after the KitKat chocolate bars. To date, the platform is outdated and significantly inferior to more modern versions. Some applications (both regular and sold in the Play Store) are not supported, but supported versions can be downloaded on the Internet and from other repositories.

This version of the software has made a major leap in terms of performance, which allows the tablet to work quite smoothly and quickly, despite not the most powerful hardware under the hood. Another important point is the adaptation of the interface for large displays. Also in this version, power consumption is significantly reduced, which has a positive effect on the operating time of the device.

The system has a set of pre-installed “software” from Google, as well as from partners. The first cannot but rejoice, since the software from Google is of good quality and pleases with its functionality. The second is very disappointing, since third-party, pre-installed “software” only takes up space and is rarely useful (given that most of it is demo versions of low-grade games).

Wireless and wired interfaces

The device has a number of standard wireless interfaces. These include: Wi-Fi 802.11n, Bluetooth version 4.0, as well as support for 3G mobile networks. Unfortunately, the tablet does not work with 4th generation (LTE) networks, which for many may be a decisive factor due to the large difference in speed between 3rd and 4th generation networks.

Another important feature of the device is the support for microHDMI, which greatly expands the multimedia capabilities for the subject of this review. It is possible to freely transfer the image from the tablet to a TV or display with HDMI support.

With an OTG cable, you can connect all kinds of peripherals to the tablet. For example, if you like typing on a full-sized physical keyboard, you can easily connect it to this tablet. The same goes for gamepads, they also work great with this model.

Acer Iconia Tab A1 811 Reviews

The main advantage of the device is the price. Users evaluate the tablet based on its cost, which makes the assessment less objective.

Of the advantages of the device, a properly functioning GPS is singled out, since many users purchase such gadgets as a replacement for navigation ones.

Many people like to use their tablet as a phone. It can actually receive calls and send SMS, which makes it even more functional.

They also speak positively about the battery, which is able to withstand a full working day (of course, it all depends on the individual user, but the fact remains).

The gadget also had unexpected shortcomings, such as a very weak Wi-Fi signal and mobile networks. Compared to similar devices, the Acer Iconia Tab A1 811 keeps the connection much worse, often losing it altogether.

Well, the problem common to all is a weak camera, incapable of creating more or less decent photographs.

Another major problem is the existing batch of tablets with broken power controllers capable of destroying the battery (discharging it to zero, without being able to charge it on its own).

Some users managed to connect a USB modem with a SIM card to the tablet.

Interestingly, for this device, it is not at all difficult to find spare parts, including the display. In the event of a breakdown, most of the spare parts can be easily purchased on the Internet and replaced by yourself (such work should be carried out only with full confidence in your competence, otherwise you should turn to professionals).

Prices

The gadget belongs to the category of budget devices, therefore it pleases with its cost. The tablet can be purchased for less than 8 thousand rubles. The latest price in the Svyaznoy store for the Acer Iconia Tab A1 811 8gb 3G stopped at 6250 rubles.

Instead of a conclusion

This product from Acer seems completely nondescript and rather boring, but a good home tablet, a tool for solving life's tasks, should not be too colorful. The company focused on user experience for the largest possible audience and device accessibility.

In fact, this is the ideal device for those who want to own a tablet computer, use it for work or school, but have a modest budget.
