In the meantime, let's consider a budget option for camping acoustics (after all, spring-summer is coming soon, kebabs, baked potatoes, drinks and fun). Please under the cat!

I needed acoustics that would produce more or less good sound, compared to netbook speakers, and it would be possible to use it outdoors. I liked the reviewed copy, so it was decided to order it.

I didn’t go for a long time, about 25 days. It was sent without a track. Arrived in a simple postal plastic bag. There was a box inside, the printing was not the best printing (although the description of the lot states that it will be without packaging at all, but just wrapped in bubbles). Well, this is definitely a plus, you can even give it as a gift. Retail packaging was wrapped in bubbles and arrived without dents, etc. Inside the retailer, the column was wrapped in a matte bag, in such a way that phone batteries are usually placed. Under the speaker is a rectangular cardboard pocket with cables: USB-microUSB, 3.5-3.5. And that's all from the kit.

After looking at it for a minute, or even less, I began to turn it on. It turns on by pressing and holding the Power button for 2-3 seconds. The sound emits when turned on like the original Beats.

Bluetooth
And immediately starts chattering in English saying connect via bluetooth and the LED flashes. It is located very quickly and connects without passwords. Bluetooth is always active even when a USB flash drive or audio input is connected, but it fails to connect to the bluetooth. Those. you need to get a USB flash drive or cable from the audio input and then the bluetooth will connect.
Connected Redmi and Cowon J3. Both connected without problems, the + and - buttons on the song column switch, the button b on the front responds to incoming call The microphone works well when talking. But there is one catch. There is a difference in volume between devices. We unscrew the volume on the speaker to the full (from minimum to maximum 15 clicks), connect Redmi and also unscrew it to the full, yelling so that the ears are pawned, but Cowon J3, according to the same scheme, plays quieter by an order of magnitude, feels quieter by 35 percent thirty. I don’t know for sure what’s the matter, but I can assume that it’s the bluetooth audio profiles, Cowon doesn’t support something there or the version of the tooth.

microSD
Here everything just inserted a USB flash drive and the music went from the first catalog. There is no way to switch directories. Tracks are scrolled by single pressing + or -. If a flash drive is inserted, by pressing the button b you switch between Flash card or Bluetooth mode.
The track is remembered when turned off.

Audio input
It was a little dark in here. I connect the complete cable to the netbook, and the other end to the connector marked In, and silence in response. So it didn't work. The poke method helped :) I plug it into the Out connector and the sound came from the speakers of the column (I forgot to say here there are 2 of them active, and two passive membranes, below are pictures of the patient's disassembly. If I did not understand correctly what it is, then please correct me). The Chinese, therefore, were smart with the inscriptions of the entrance and exit. Well, it works and let it work. But no, I want everything to be human.

Patient preparation
I wanted to disassemble the column and see what's inside and can even do humanly what was In the input, and Out the output. It is very easy to disassemble, for this you need to remove the rubber strip that serves to stabilize the column on the surface. The strip does not hold strongly or weakly on double-sided tape. There are screws under it (5-1 = 4), we unscrew them, we notice we hook the mesh, preferably with plastic (but I hooked it with a knife and the paint was not even scratched) to remove the mesh and the entire block in it from the latches. It was not possible to swap In and Out :(, I thought they were also on the same contacts as, for example, speakers. But I was glad that the battery costs 18650 and you can replace it if something goes wrong with it. Well, or even put a larger volume, or maybe you can try to put two and then the autonomy will increase by 4. It will be possible to listen for a day almost at the maximum or 3 days at a volume that is comfortable for a normal room. If anyone understands whether it can be done and how to do it with batteries, then answer in the comments. I will be very grateful. The speakers turned out to be 2 active (through the mesh it seems that all 4 are active) and 2 passive membranes. I touched the speakers and membranes with a needle, the return is different. On the dynamics it is continuous, but on the membrane it looks like when the frequencies are low.

Results:
All the needs that were required of her were satisfied. The price corresponds to the quality one hundred percent. If you want without any jambs, then you need to take the original Beats pill and not squirm.

Loud, lows, mids, highs - all this is present.
+ Good autonomy (at approximately 50% volume it lasts 10 hours). 50% is too much for a room. One day I could barely stand listening to it at such a volume, but the experiment is EVERYTHING.

- Does not give a sound signal that the battery will soon be discharged. (maybe the tooth LED starts flashing from behind or the USB connector LED starts to glow, but I haven’t seen it)
- No notification when fully charged, neither light nor sound. You can only check with equipment that will show how much the column took in and when the charging process stopped.

Design, control, ergonomics

Beats Pill is a portable stereo active speaker system that connects to a sound source with an audio cable or via Bluetooth A2DP. As a shape for the case, the designers chose the shape of a tablet, more precisely, a capsule, which is reflected in the name (English pill - pill, tablet). So the corporate slogan Beats by dr. Dre - "Just what the doctor ordered" - fits this gadget perfectly. The stylization has been brought to its logical conclusion - inside a solid and durable box there is a transparent blister, reminiscent of a medicine package, with a “pill” inside.

Surprise: the “pill” is there for a reason, but in a protective carrying case, in which Pill can not only be carried in a bag, but also attached to the same bag or backpack with the included carabiner. It can also be worn on a belt, but this is not the best option, because when walking, a weighty (310 g) column will constantly hit you in best case on the leg. The box also includes a compact USB charger, a USB-to-microUSB cable, a 3.5-3.5mm audio cable, and a user manual.

The Beats Pill case is strong and dense, without backlash and any removable parts - for speaker system this is especially critical. The "tablet" weighs 310 grams. The back part is made of soft-touch matte plastic, pleasant to the touch, on the front half there are metal grilles covering two pairs of speakers. Below is a thick rubber “foot”, thanks to which the Pill does not slip on the table. It would still be made wider so that it would not be so easy to tip the column forward or backward, but then, apparently, the resemblance to a tablet would be lost.

Pill's controls are simple, nothing more - power buttons, volume buttons and the main control button with a logo that glows during operation. Playback can only be paused and resumed. Skipping a track and rewinding inside it are not provided, however, unlike a headset, they are not really needed here. Long press on home button switches the Bluetooth adapter of the “tablet” into discovery mode, while, in theory, the backlighting of the logo should somehow change, but no - it lights up the same in all modes of operation. On the other hand, a small LED on the back side, next to the connector, starts flashing (when established connection it stays on all the time). The battery charge / discharge indicator is made in the form of a rim around the MicroUSB connector and lights up when charging, and blinks red when the charge is low. Both blinking indicators, apparently, are specially removed away from the eyes on the back of the case so that nothing annoys the user, and if he misses the moment for recharging and the “tablet” turns off, it's okay, after all, this is not a phone or a computer.

The volume and power buttons are recessed into the case almost flush, as for me - they are slightly tight and have too much travel without a clear click. Turning on and off, as well as connecting and disconnecting from a Bluetooth audio source is accompanied by sound signals, but the 16-step volume control has no indication - neither sound nor visual. Turning on Pill, you never know how loud the music will sound now. There is no way to know the current battery level either, as long as it is above critical. Claimed 6 hours playback via A2DP and 7.5 hours via wired connection were confirmed, the Pill battery was enough for 5-8 hours, depending on the mode of operation.

Sound

The column contains four (two per channel) speakers with a diameter of 1 ”with a declared total power of 12 watts. For its size, the Pill sounds surprisingly clear, delivering an unexpectedly bassy sound. The volume is quite consistent with the declared, for a small room there is even a lot of it, and on the street the "tablet" successfully shouts over the noise of cars.

Of course, it is not recommended to listen to Pill at maximum volume, distortions become audible, especially with a rich sound picture. There are no pronounced wheezing and rattling, just the sound becomes unpleasant to the ear. The optimal level is up to 3/4 of the maximum on the "tablet" and in the sound source - yes, when outputting to the speakers, the volume is adjusted both there and there, and with headphones connected - only in the player. Therefore, before connecting the headphones, it is worth lowering the volume of the speaker to a minimum, otherwise, if you turn off the headphones during playback, an unpleasant surprise is possible.

The sound quality in such devices is negatively affected by two factors at once - the small size of the speakers and lossy compression during transmission via Bluetooth. The second is expressed in a noticeable cutting of the frequency range from below, which is clearly audible when the same headphones are connected to the Pill output and directly to the sound source, as well as in the appearance of small but unpleasant distortions in the sounds of analog instruments, natural sounds and vocals ("cymbals" , the sound of the sea, sibilants), it is well audible in the speakers.

When it comes to music genres, Pill is best suited for electronic, dance and other simple rhythmic music that uses mostly digital instruments and technologies. Vocals are also worked out well, because. falls into the most “convenient” range for such speakers. Acoustic guitar sounds good too (for the same reason). Symphonic music and rock are given to the tablet worse - in works with a dense, rich sound picture, the music becomes illegible, lacks transparency and detail, especially at volumes above average. The sound as a whole is somewhat "bright", which is successfully treated with an equalizer, although someone may like it that way.

Due to the proximity of the speakers, the separation of stereo channels suffers. The volume of sound is present, but the localization is slurred. For example, at the beginning of the famous composition "Thriller" by Michael Jackson, the steps, which should move from right to left, mark time, unless the speaker is brought directly to the head.

Everything written above refers to the worst (in terms of quality) use case - in conjunction with sound sources using the standard SBC codec (they are by far the majority). With a wired connection, the disadvantages specific to Bluetooth disappear, leaving only those associated with the small size and close proximity of the speakers.

The sound becomes noticeably cleaner and more transparent, the bass is slightly increased, and at full power of the amplifier, the sound, although it suffers, remains acceptable. At the same time, the brightness of the sound does not go anywhere, but without the distortions characteristic of the SBC codec, it is no longer so annoying. Jazz and rock begin to sound much more pleasant, the vocalists generally seem to be standing side by side, and the famous Oxygen by Jean-Michel Jarre is simply mesmerizing.

In this use case, Pill easily replaces mid-range computer speakers and allows you to get "sonic orgasms" from your favorite songs (I'm serious), but still, on some songs like Big Gun (AC / DC) it seems that dynamic range deliberately narrowed to avoid overloading small speakers and, as a result, wheezing and rattling.

However, there is a third, intermediate option. Pill, like many other modern Bluetooth speakers and headphones, also supports the aptX codec with higher sound quality. From smartphones and tablets, it is implemented in modern models HTC (starting with ONE X/S/V), Motorola (starting with RAZR smartphones), Samsung (starting with Galaxy S3, Note2 and Tab 7.0 Plus), as well as several Sharp models and Fujitsu. Nokia licensed aptX, but has not yet implemented it in their smartphones, there is no information about Sony. Full list available on the website of CSR, the owner of the technology. Unfortunately, it was not possible to get one of the listed devices for full testing, but even a brief listening in a not very suitable environment confirmed the advantages of aptX - subjectively, the sound quality was at the level of a wired connection.

Just in case, let me remind you that when playing via Bluetooth, the audible result consists of many components. This is the quality of the audio file itself (which is affected not only by the bitrate), the audio path and the Bluetooth adapter of both the transmitting and receiving devices. Therefore, a cheap noname "whistle" for a PC is quite capable of ruining the pleasure of expensive acoustics.

Portable acoustics Beats Pill is a stylish and high-quality device with a stable wow effect. Two connection options make the "tablet" a universal solution for different situations. Paired with a smartphone or tablet, it is able to voice outdoor recreation, a gym, a dance group rehearsal, a retail outlet or a small outdoor event. At home and in the office, Pill does a great job computer acoustics taking up minimum space on the table. Thanks to the built-in microphone, the “tablet” is suitable for calls via mobile or Skype, and if the sound bothers others, you can connect headphones to it without switching sound output in computer. Some time ago, Beats released a couple of speakers, let's call them large and small, in fact, many manufacturers did this, trying to build a line - but with such solutions it’s not easy, people often don’t look for a large audio system or a small audio system, they choose something in between. Format JBL Charge turned out to be optimal both for use at home and on the street, this device still sets the tone on the market, so all manufacturers are forced to peep and learn from experience. Well, if this is not done, then it will turn out like with Jawbone, they released speakers in three formats, until they completely covered the direction due to lack of sales. The updated Beats Pill + is a rethinking of the old approach - one speaker for all occasions.

Naturally, being under the wing of Apple, Beats can afford to relax a little, but so far this is not happening, and this is very good. All Beats products released in the last year or two will be relevant for a long time, sometimes optimized for use with Apple technology - Pill + comes with Lightning cable, which will make life easier for you if you use an iPhone/iPad - quite versatile in terms of sound and good in terms of design. In other words, it's nice to take it in your hands. For Pill, all this is relevant, and, I will say in advance, I really liked the column.

The packaging is typical for the company's products, a good box, the column is wrapped in paper, each item in the kit is in its own packaging. The European version has a regular plug, so I advise you to follow this moment - models for England, China have a different accessory. The fabric cover is made rather strangely, some kind of worn sock, but there is a black Lightning cable, you can use it to charge the speaker and charge a smartphone from the speaker. There is a plug on the back, some people have a problem with extraction, although you just don’t need to be smart here, pull out the tongue in front, then the entire plug. Under it are AUX, USB for charging smartphones and Lightning for charging. Battery indicator near the power button, five LEDs will tell you what is happening with the device. It's good that there are five of them, you can more accurately determine the remaining charge.

For a couple of days of use, I fully appreciated the advantages of Lightning, I have such cables everywhere - at home, in the car, in the office, so I can charge Pill anywhere. It's great, no need to look for microUSB. Well, the ability to use the column as external battery is also good, well done in Beats, that they have not forgotten about an important function for many.

But I won't say anything about the design. The column does not have splash protection, it looks great, past experiments related to the name (Pill - a pill) are still visible here, now it is almost invisible, the column has a familiar shape, is well assembled, is available in black and white colors, there are limited versions, but we do not sell them. The device is neither big nor small, but definitely weighty, 740 grams is no joke. As I said above, the thing is quite universal, many people use and will use Pill + as the main audio device at home, on the street, in other places. You can also take it on a trip, especially if you have a suitcase.

A metal grill covers the front of the speakers, central part made of velvety plastic, there is also a grille and an insert made of “soft-touch” plastic at the back. At the bottom, they did without a leg, the material does not allow the speaker to “crawl” on the table during playback, even if there is a slope.

On the top are all the device control buttons, this is the power button, Beats for additional functions, volume buttons. Don't forget to install the Beats Pill+ app to access additional features:

• Combining two speakers into a stereo pair.
• Sound amplification (in general, two speakers are also used, but not as a stereo pair).
• DJ, two people connect from their smartphones to the speaker and turn on different music. We tried to do it with a friend, it worked out the second time - first you connect the first device, then the second, then switch music from smartphones.

For all the manipulations mentioned, you need to use the Beats button on the top, it is backlit, made very beautifully. Already for this button, designers can shake hands. As you can see, they tried to implement social functions to the fullest - if for Russia this may not be very relevant, then for the USA it’s very even, there are a lot of Beats fans there. And that's where all these functions will really be in demand.

According to the application, current version Software 2.1.14, to update, you need to connect the column with a cable to the computer, go to a special page, download the program there or look at the software version right on the spot - the specified number is still relevant, the column has all the latest functions. You can also download a program for OS X, the utility will automatically start when you connect the column, check the software version.

A speakerphone is installed in the device, it works perfectly, it’s quite possible to talk with someone not even alone, but together, arrange a mini-meeting – that’s how Pill + was tested. We were heard perfectly, we also heard the interlocutor well. You can also answer a call directly from the speaker, and this is a big plus.

In general, the column does not raise any questions in terms of operating time, functionality, design - everything you need is here, except, perhaps, protection from water. But, as I often write, better users not to talk about it at all, so that people do not throw speakers into the water.

Working hours

Claimed run time is 12 hours, feel free to use the included power supply. It will take about three hours to fully charge. As already mentioned, using the speaker you can charge other devices too, which is very convenient on the road or on the street. To check the column, you can always press the Power button and see how many indicators are lit.

Sound

Lots of bass, lots of bass! Don't be deceived by the small size of the device, the "pill" basses as expected, has a huge volume margin, the device easily sounds both a large room in the apartment and the space surrounding you near the turnstiles. A person there laments about many things, about sound quality, but in fact, all this is nonsense - we have a small column in front of us, and not a couple of Nautiluses, that JBL Charge, that Pill are not intended for audiophiles, but for ordinary people who want to listen to music rather than study graphs in tests.

So, inside the column there are four speakers, two high-frequency, two low-frequency ones, you should not be surprised at the failures in the “middle”, Beats still counts on bass lovers. And there are no questions here, the column booms as it should be. But, of course, with the help of Pill + you can listen to anything - jazz, pop, techno - just maybe it's better not to include the classics.

In retail, the speaker costs 17,990 rubles, an amazing price for such a device - let me remind you, there is a JBL Charge 3 of a similar size for 10,990 rubles (and the sound is more interesting there, honestly), there is a JBL Pulse 2 with backlight and good sound for 11,990 rubles, there is, finally, JBL Xtreme, it is three times larger than Pill + and costs 14,990 rubles. I specifically brought JBL, because it is the strongest player in the portable audio market, and this cannot be ignored. Apparently, Apple thinks otherwise.

So, if you do not look at the price, I really liked the device - the design is good, and Lightning is used, and the sound is groovy, and it works 12 hours from the battery, and there are additional functions. Everything is fine. But 17,990 rubles? I advise my colleagues responsible for Beats to look more often at the prices of competitors, exchange rates, other things - in the USA the device costs $229.95.

If the price does not bother you, you can safely take it. I would especially recommend to those who use only Apple technology.
