Let's look at the device settings. Typically, a phone or tablet battery has a voltage of 3.7 V, the same voltage as a battery battery. The battery converter boosts it to standard value 5 V, and when the current enters the phone, the voltage is again reduced by the built-in converter to 3.7 V. The usable capacity during the charging process here depends only on the overall efficiency of both converters.

It can be calculated using the formula (battery voltage x battery capacity) x efficiency ÷ output voltage. For the same battery marked 10000 mAh, efficiency 90% and battery voltage 3.7 V, after bringing the current to 5 V at the output of the converter, the capacity will be: 3.7 V x 10000 mAh) x 0.9 ÷ 5 V = 6660 mAh .


Not so long ago, individual manufacturers of external batteries began to indicate the capacity in watt-hours (Wh), for example, 37 Wh for the battery discussed above with the usual marking of 10,000 mAh.

Thus, from a 10,000 mAh battery with an output current of 2 A, a 9,000 mAh tablet battery will be fully charged in 4.5 hours. But a 10 W USB lamp with an operating voltage of 5 V at a current of 2 A can only shine for 3 hours and 20 minutes.

There are also situations when the marking of the device is corny not true. The battery, which indicates the capacity of 15600 mAh, sometimes in reality gives no more than 1500 mAh. Current strength

Another parameter that is often labeled with a universal battery case and which you should pay attention to is the current strength at the connectors from which devices are charged. It depends on the charging speed, and certain devices sometimes require compliance with specific parameters.

If the output connector supplies a current of 1 A (or 1000 mA), it will be enough to charge a regular smartphone. The tablet will require a current of 1.5-2 A, and the iPad - 2.1 A. For those who use several devices at the same time, a more capacious battery with two connectors, with more and less current, is suitable.

Battery type and safety of use

In external chargers, as a rule, lithium-ion (the most famous of them are cylindrical 18650) and lithium-polymer batteries are used. These are modern high-tech batteries that have a number of advantages.
