To make a cross stitch pattern from a photo, it is enough to have a computer and install a special program. Sooner or later, cross stitch lovers are faced with the question of how to make a cross stitch pattern from a photo. At first glance, this may seem impossible, but it is not as difficult as it seems. In the computer age, you do not need to sit with a pencil in your hands drawing a pattern for embroidery.

There are photos that you want not only to look at, but to make a masterpiece out of them. Cross-stitched favorite photos are the dream of all embroiderers. To realize this dream, experience with programs that create circuits is required.

How to make cross stitch from a photo can be described as follows:

  • First you need to select a photo on which the embroidery will be made;
  • Then download a special program for creating diagrams for free;
  • Next, upload the selected photo to the program;
  • By clicking on the corresponding button, create a scheme;
  • Wait for the download of the scheme to the computer.

An excellent gift for newlyweds is an embroidery made from a wedding photo.

When developing a scheme, great attention should be paid to faces, especially eyes. When looking at an embroidered picture, it should attract, win over. Then everything depends on the skill of needlewomen.

Creating a unique painting requires a lot of patience and diligence. The finished result of embroidery will delight for a long time if the canvas is fixed in a frame.

Cross stitch from photographs: ways to realize your plans

Cross-stitching from photographs is like drawing portraits, only instead of a pencil and paints - threads and needles. Creating diagrams, selecting photographs, processing with a program and the embroidery process itself are creative work. A picture-photo can be embroidered in any color option. It can be black and white, three-color or have a full palette of colors.

There are several ways to make a pattern for embroidering photographs and turning them into originality:

  • With the help of specialized programs;
  • Using graph paper and colored pencils;
  • Via graphic editor photoshop.

With the resulting scheme, the same should be worked on. It is necessary to evaluate the number of colors that the program offers.

Many of them can be excluded, and, if possible, single crosses can be removed. Each of these methods will ideally translate an artistic idea into reality. Embroidery will bring great pleasure when portraits are made with soul. An embroidered portrait can be made as a gift for a wedding or anniversary, or simply presented as an original gift.

Original cross-stitch with photos: the secrets of success

Photos can not only be stored in photo albums, on flash drives and personal pages sites. There is another very original way to save a memorable image - cross-stitch with photographs. Photos must be selected without strong glare, better taken in sunny in the shade or cloudy weather. If the required quality of the photo is simply not there, then the existing one will have to be carefully processed.

An embroidered canvas has a lot of advantages over ordinary photographs:

  • An embroidered photograph is not just an image, it is an art exhibition;
  • The canvas with an embroidered photograph is not afraid of getting wet;
  • Embroidered photos cannot be formatted or erased;
  • You can always make an original copy.

Among the advantages of embroidering from a photo, it should be noted the ability to very quickly make a pattern again if something went wrong

Embroidered and framed photographs will easily decorate any interior. The paintings will be unique, unique and very memorable. Cross stitching is more than a hobby, it combines sewing needle skills with artistic drawing skills.

Realistic cross-stitch: make a pattern from a photo

For the first experience of cross-stitching from a photograph, it is necessary to study the entire process in detail. It is practically no different from embroidery of other images that are not related to photography. The cross stitch pattern itself from the photo also does not differ from any other pattern. Although this is not just a scheme, it should convey all facial features, his facial expressions. The face should be without distortion and have the most natural tone.

However, it is still worth studying the steps:

  • It is necessary to prepare the material on which the photograph will be embroidered, it is called canvas;
  • Then choose the best program for creating cross stitch patterns;
  • Process the photo in the program and, if necessary, correct the image;
  • Next, select the area that will be embroidered;
  • Pick up threads;
  • Create a schema;
  • And you can start embroidering.

The program in which the scheme is made from a photograph allows you to make various changes, so that the embroidery will look perfect

Here, perhaps, are the most basic stages of preparation for cross-stitching from a photo. The resulting scheme can be printed on a color printer, or you can embroider directly from the monitor. It is necessary to pay attention to the matter, which is the basis for embroidery. Canvas serves as the basis for the image in the same way as paper for the artist.

Canvas is a soft mesh weave. This type of fabric is used not only for embroidery, it is used to make bags for storing various herbs.

Learning how to make a cross stitch pattern from a photo (video)

Canvas for embroidery can be not only fabric weaving, but also as a plastic mesh base. There is another type of canvas - water-soluble, it is used for applying embroidery to fabric. After the embroidery is completed, it is enough to soak the fabric in water, and it will dissolve.

In detail: how to make a cross stitch pattern from a photo (photo examples)

In this master class, I want to talk about one of the ways to create a cross stitch pattern. In fact, there are several of them and are suitable for different pictures. different ways, but everyone chooses for himself the one that he likes best. Perhaps someone will use the method I suggested.

I warn you right away - it is not suitable for photographs. This method is suitable for working with pictures!

In this master class, I will focus not on technical points work in the program, namely at the stages of creating a cross stitch pattern.

That is, this master class is more useful for those who already have some experience in the Pattern Maker for Cross Stitch program. It will be more difficult for beginners, because they will have to simultaneously master the program (manuals for working in Pattern Maker are available on the net) and learn how to make patterns.

To make a pattern, we need a picture that you would like to embroider, a program for creating patterns (I have Pattern Maker) and a color map (you can use just skeins of thread instead if you already have a large selection of colors). I am using a card.

We will make a scheme for the master class according to such an old postcard:

I like bright embroideries and don't like to embroider a monotonous background for a long time. Therefore, I will make the scheme with a free background, and the outlines of all elements will be clearer and brighter (cornflowers, greens, a ribbon on a hat). As a result, we will get an embroidery pattern with such types of stitches as a cross, half-cross and backstitch (hereinafter referred to as back).

Step 1. Making a run

It will be more convenient to print the picture on a color printer. It's easier than switching between windows on your computer all the time. First you will need to determine for yourself the maximum and minimum size of embroidery that you want to get in the end. Also at this stage, you need to decide whether you will crop the picture and remove some elements, what types of seams will be used. I like to work with half cross, back, french knots. Almost all the schemes that I make have these elements.

After you figured it all out, using the program we make a diagram from the picture. We start from the minimum size that we determined before and see how good the result is.

This step - creating a draft diagram in the program - will need to be repeated with increasing size until the result suits you. I usually go in increments of 20-30 crosses wide.

If maximum size, which you have determined for yourself, has already been achieved, and there is still not enough normal detail, you will either have to accept what you have, or reconsider the size, or completely abandon the creation of the scheme, at your own peril and risk.

Also at this stage, you need to set the number of colors in the embroidery. Usually I make the size a little smaller than it seems optimal at this stage, and I put the number of colors a little more. The back usually allows you to greatly increase the detail, and with a diagram with large quantity colors will then be easier to work with.

Here's what happened:

Picture width - 20 cm, colors - 40

At this step, we got the so-called "run". I think almost everyone has come across this concept.

Run is a circuit that has not been processed, just a product of the program's work without subsequent self made with a picture. In the runs, the colors are usually incorrectly transferred (and this is only visible when you start to embroider), there are many single crosses, and some colors are transferred in a checkerboard pattern. It's hard to embroider, and the result is completely unpredictable.

Step 2. Draw the contours

Outlines should be drawn with backing. The backing should almost always be brighter and darker than the element that we circle with this backing.

Blonde hair - dark brown background.
Peach skin - back brown.
Cornflowers are bright blue - the backing is dark blue.

I prefer to add colors to the palette one at a time as I start working with each new element. If you start to circle some element, it is better to finish the work, do not jump from detail to detail, otherwise it will be easy to get confused. It is convenient to draw on a greatly enlarged diagram. Colors will need to be selected by eye according to the palette or color map, and not according to the colors that the program suggested. You can not look at the program colors at all.

Here is the hat circled in the diagram:

Here is a close-up of a short section of the circuit:

For this work, I chose the display method in solid cells

Step 3. Remove everything from the scheme except the backing

I have some colors left on the diagram, because the colors for the background
accidentally matched what the program suggested

All programs that I know cannot render colors accurately. Therefore, I prefer not to work with what the program produces in such schemes, so you can avoid the appearance of singles, checkerboards and distorted colors. On hand-drawn schemes, the colors are relatively monolithic, and it is then easy and pleasant to embroider according to such schemes.

Step 4: Draw the Diagram

Now we take a color printout of the picture and begin to draw the actual diagram from it. Again, draw each element as a whole, do not jump between elements.

We select colors as follows: in a single-color element, usually from three to seven shades, from highlight to shadow.

Shadow- this is not a more saturated color, but a colder and grayer one. The thickest shadows are usually black or dark gray, remember this.

glare- usually not the brightest color, but the closest to white or even white.

We select colors either starting from the darkest, or starting from the lightest shade. I usually paint starting with highlights. Do not forget to soften the transitions between colors, but without fanaticism, otherwise it is difficult to embroider according to the scheme.

Here I drew a hat with crosses:

At this stage, the color scheme will be very different from the original image. The program renders colors inaccurately, so a hat, for example, appears darker. You just need to keep this in mind and remember that you should try not to make an imitation as close as possible to the picture (imitation is an unloading from the program), but to choose the right colors for embroidery. The color scheme in the program will differ from the original picture, this is normal.

We draw curls:

The most difficult thing to draw is the human face.

It became noticeable that the face was drawn inaccurately. Correcting.

I usually try not to add too many colors to the main palette. This time I used the same colors for the hat and collar, just the lighter part of the palette went for the collar.

cornflowers

Now we start working with a half-cross. For this, too, I usually try to use the same colors that have already been used with the cross, adding new threads if that is the only way to achieve the best effect. Don't forget to soften the transitions between colors.

After everything is drawn, we reduce the diagram and look at it, as it were, from afar. Fix something if needed. Here's what we got:

The imitation now seems rough, these are color rendering flaws. In the process of embroidery, the greenery will be embroidered in one addition of the thread, this will achieve lightness and airiness.

The half-cross is now rendered as very small double crosses. It’s inconvenient to work with this, so I always duplicate all the colors that are also used for the cross, and then I make the whole embroidery as if it were embroidered with a cross. As a result, the imitation is unloaded from one file, which shows that there is a half-cross on the embroidery, and the scheme for embroidery is from another. It turns out that in the scheme one color will be indicated by two or three symbols: one for the cross, the second for the half-cross, the third - if the half-cross comes with different addition of threads.

Step 5: Final Check

After completing all the work, it would be good to check the scheme. To do this, you need to postpone it for a couple of days, and then decrease-increase it again to see if everything suits you. This is important because there is a lot of work ahead: the actual embroidery.

It would also be nice to check the circuit for the presence of single crosses just in case. To do this, select each color in turn and see how it is distributed. If necessary, we make adjustments.

If it was made only for yourself, you can already embroider. If not, or do not rely on memory, you can customize different types lines for backing: lines, dots, dotted lines. This will make it easier to navigate later. If you have a color printer, you might want to set different colors for similar characters. No - no worries.

If there is a lot of backing and it makes it difficult to distinguish characters, it may be worth making two versions of the scheme: with and without backing.

How to remove backing from a diagram

To remove the backing, you can patiently select each line and press del a few hundred times. And you can remove everything at once.

For this you need right click mouse click on the free field of the menu (this is above the diagram, where all the symbols and tabs end, on the boring gray field).

A small menu will drop out, in it you will need to select the Selected stith types item.

Another menu with symbols will drop out. In it, those symbols that are used in the scheme will be bright blue, and those symbols that are not present will be gray and muted.

Now you need to select the entire scheme. To do this, press the Ctrl + A keys (you can select the entire scheme with the mouse, or click Select all in the Edit tab). A dotted line should move around the selected scheme.

Now we click on the “cross” stitch in the last drop-down menu, while the crosses seem to rise, and the rest of the characters remain a little recessed.

We do the same for the half-cross, if it is in the diagram. Now we press the Delete key on the keyboard, and all the backing should be deleted.

Before all these manipulations, just in case, I would advise you to do backup schemes with backing - you never know, something will not work out, it will be a shame to be left without a scheme at all.

For information: the size of the future embroidery on the 16th aida is 20 by 24.76 cm, 126 by 156 crosses. The number of flowers is about 30.
