What is email and what is it for?

In real life, in order not to be considered homeless, you need a residence permit, but on the Internet, you need an e-mail or an email address. The purpose of e-mail is the same as that of the real one - receiving letters (only, unlike the Russian Post, it happens instantly). But what are these letters and to what address are they sent? Let's figure it out.

What is e-mail, how to write and pronounce "e-mail" correctly

The email address has many synonyms, you can hear "throw your box", "give mail" or even "let's drop it on soap". And if the box and mail is still clear, then what does the soap have to do with it? Yes, despite the fact that from English e-mail will sound like email("electronic mail") or abbreviated e-mail (and - mail). Well, users came up with “soap” consonant with “mail”.

What does an email address look like

And then someone with the words “throw me in the mail” begins to dictate some kind of krakozyabra. What kind of dog, what else is “gmail com” or “Yandex ru”?

The email address (or mail or address, these are all synonyms) consists of two parts: Login, that is, the username and , which are separated by a special character: @ - "dog"

It turns out that the first part (before the “@” sign) displays the name that the person came up with for registration, and the second part (after the “@” sign) is the address of the site on which the mail is registered, it is assigned automatically depending on whether where the mailbox was created.

Interestingly, the official name of the "@" sign is commercial at, because it was originally used in payment documents instead of English "a t the rate of" , that is on(price).

One version says that the “@” symbol was called “dog” because of the popular computer network in the USSR, the logo of which was a dog with a “dog” instead of a nose.

What are the types of e-mail

Currently, the most popular mail services, and, therefore, the most popular domain names in the mailing address (that is, those names that come after the "dog"):

  1. gmail.com
  2. yandex.ru
  3. mail.ru
  4. rambler.ru

There is no difference in functioning, letters will be delivered equally quickly and reliably to any of these domains. It doesn't matter if you send from gmail.com to yandex.ru or from mail.ru to mail.ru.

So it's a matter of taste:

what does yandex mail look like

what does google mail look like

what does e-mail look like

So what is the difference and where is the best place to register email? This question is very similar to the one, “There is no definite answer to it. It all depends on the taste of the user. However, mail on gmail.com has a major advantage: registration on popular foreign sites will take place in one click, "authorization using gmail", for example, on such a famous video service as youtube.

Why email is needed

We figured out what an email address consists of and where it can be registered. Now let's move on to why it is needed.

  1. Receive emails from friends and colleagues. It is understandable if friends live in another city and ordinary letters take too long. But what can be cool here if you regularly see friends and colleagues? Yes, a lot! Letters are not just text. You can share photos and links to websites, attach various documents and files, and all this is fast and easy, without the need to write something to a USB flash drive or disk. Many organizational issues are resolved in a few mouse clicks.
  2. Registration on sites. Often, in order to gain access to all features (for example, commenting on forums or shopping in online stores), registration is required, that is, you leave your email box, come up with a username and password for this site and agree to the terms. After that, you will receive a confirmation letter by e-mail, in which you need to follow the link to activate your account (that is, to confirm that it was you who registered there). Registration on the sites is not possible without entering an e-mail.

Often, in order to leave a comment on a site or subscribe to updates, registration on the site is required.
