At Microsoft Edge extensions appeared. How to install?

Microsoft is making good on its promise to bring extension support to the Edge browser. The latest preview build includes this option, and testers on Windows program Insiders can already try out the new functionality.

First additions for Edge

Edge currently supports three extensions:

  • Microsoft Translator, which automatically translates pages into over 50 different languages.
  • An early version of the Reddit Enhancement Suite that adds useful features to view the site.
  • And an extension to recognize mouse gestures for actions like switching tabs.

The company says other extensions from Adblock Plus, Amazon, LastPass and Evernote will be available later this year. Available extensions must be loaded on the latest preview version of Edge. Microsoft says that as soon as the feature is ready for the public, it will appear in the Windows Store.

Install extensions in Microsoft Edge

If you can't wait for the extensions to go public, you can download and install extensions yourself in the Microsoft Edge browser on Windows 10. But you'll need Windows 10 build 14291 to work.

Step 1: Open the Edge browser. Click on the "Next" button (three dots) located in the upper right corner of the browser window (see the picture below), and then click on "Extensions".

Step 3: Scroll down the page to see available extensions.

Step 4: Click the "Download" button to download the extension.

Step 5: After downloading, either click on the "Run" button that appears after the download is completed, or navigate to the folder where the extension is saved, and then double-click on the extension to begin installation.

Step 6: After installation, open Edge, click on the three dots in the corner, and then on "Extensions" (Extensions).

Step 7: Finally, click the "Load extension" button, and then navigate to the saved extension folder.

Step 8: Select a folder with extensions, and then click the "Select Folder" button to load the selected extension. Edge is now ready to use.

Minimalism was originally a distinctive feature of Edge. Moreover, this minimalism was manifested not only in the browser interface, but also in its functionality. Long-awaited support for browser extensions in Windows 10 Test Build (14291) for Insider Program users. The first three of them were a trial version from Microsoft itself and had a specific installation method. The situation changed with the release of the update, after which extensions for Edge became available to all Windows 10 users through the Microsoft Store. Let's see what interesting things the developers have already done for Edge.

Installing extensions

As already mentioned, after the Anniversary Update, extensions for Edge appeared in the Microsoft Store. To install the extension, open Microsoft Edge, click on the settings menu button (...) and go to the "Extensions" section - this displays a list of all extensions installed in the browser. To open a page with other extensions in the Windows Store, click Get extensions from the store. The process of installing them is no different from installing other applications for Windows 10.

The best extensions for Microsoft Edge

Despite the rather modest number of extensions available for the Edge browser, we tried to choose the best of them.

AdBlock and Adblock Plus

For many users, the presence of these extensions is the main argument when choosing a browser. Despite the similarity in name and almost the same functionality, these are two separate extensions from different developers. AdBlock and Adblock Plus allow you to block all ads (at least most of them) on web pages. The extensions also work great with video content, cutting out ads like YouTube videos and preventing pop-ups from opening. The principle of operation and functionality of extensions exactly repeat the work of similar tools in Chrome and Firefox. Here you can also activate the extension either for separate page, or for all pages of the domain. There are lists of filters in AdBlock and Adblock Plus settings, it is possible to make changes and add your own filters. By the way, note that for both extensions, the “Show non-intrusive ads” option is active by default.

In general, AdBlock and Adblock Plus are identical, so you shouldn't install both extensions. You will not get any benefits from this, but additional delays when opening pages are quite possible. Stop your choice on any one that you like more.

Save to Pocket

Save to Pocket is a button for saving a web page in a snooze service. Reading Pocket. This popular service serves as a repository for selected web content, and synchronization and support for various platforms allow you to view the saved material on any device, including a smartphone or tablet offline. All content in Pocket is presented in a convenient format. You can not only view your own materials, but also read the articles of other users, following the recommendations of the service. Among additional options Save to Pocket - the ability to add tags or send an open web page directly to the archive.

OneNote Web Clipper and Evernote Web Clipper

Extensions of the most popular note-taking services that have firmly entered our language under the name "web clippers". These tools make working with OneNote and Evernote much easier, allowing you to save any content to your notebook with one click, whether it's an entire page or a selected fragment of it. The OneNote extension can save any content as an entire page, article, or bookmark.

Evernote Web Clipper, on the other hand, comes with a much more advanced set of features. For example, when saving page content to Notepad, you can choose the default save method, add comments, automatically assign tags, and more.

Microsoft Translator

Microsoft's proprietary Translator was one of the first extensions that the company introduced to the Windows 10 test build for members of the Insider Program. The extension allows one-click translation into any of the 50 available languages. This tool will be useful primarily for those who often use machine translation services, as well as users Chrome browser who are accustomed to the built-in function of Google's translation service. Now in Edge there is such an opportunity. At Microsoft installation Translator corresponding button appears in the address bar if the language of the web page is different from system language.

LastPass

The popular password manager LastPass is now also available as an extension for Edge. The convenience of the LastPass service lies in the fact that all passwords are stored on the server in encrypted form, synchronized with all your devices and available through the web interface. Even if you change your browser, you can download the appropriate extension and your passwords will always be at hand. In addition to a convenient extended form of service management, the LastPass button provides access to extension tools, with which you can quickly add a login and password to the site, generate New password, create a note or an autofill form.

office online

If you are using software products Microsoft, then this is the must-have tool for you. The Office Online extension provides fast access to the online suite of office applications, which include: Word, Excel, PowerPoint, OneNote and Sway. This is a kind of control panel for launching the office editor you need. Directly from the extension control panel, you can create new document and edit existing documents - all changes are saved in OneDrive cloud. In addition, it is possible to work with documents that are located locally on your computer. The most convenient "feature" of the extension is a list of recent documents, which allows you to quickly continue working with them.

Mouse Gestures

Another interesting extension of our own Microsoft development. Mouse Gestures adds custom mouse gestures to the Edge browser. All gestures are assigned to the right button of the "rodent" and in order to use them, you must press and hold this button within the browser. A total of 16 gestures are available, each of which can be assigned any action from the list. For example, holding right button mouse and moving it to the right and up, you can open new tab, a similar gesture up and left will return you to the previous page.

We have tried all the currently available extensions for the Edge browser in action and told you about the most useful ones. 4 extensions were left without attention, which, in truth, will not be of particular interest to the average user.

Eventually

The story with Edge extensions is actually mixed. The situation at the moment is such that we have only 13 extensions in the Microsoft Store, and third-party developers (or Microsoft itself) are in no hurry to expand this list. On the other hand, it should be noted that among the available extensions for Edge there are already extremely useful tools, such as AdBlock, Evernote Web Clipper, Microsoft Translator, and Office Online. What extensions for Edge do you use?

One of the most anticipated "chips" of the Windows 10 Anniversary Update was a significant improvement in the Microsoft Edge browser. Now he knows how to work with extensions. Let's take a closer look at how to add and remove plugins in Edge.

Installing Extensions in Edge

The process of installing plugins in Edge is not much different from similar steps for other browsers. We click on the main menu (the icon with an ellipsis to the right of the address bar) and select the “Extensions” item in it.

The list opens installed add-ons(of course, it is still empty for us), below which there is an offer to get new additions from Windows Store, click on this proposal with the mouse.

Opens the Windows Store to the Extensions for Edge page. We select the add-on we need and click on it with the mouse. We get to the page of detailed information about it.

To install the plugin, click the "Free" button.

The installation is completely automatic, after it is completed, a message will appear in the Notification Center about the completion of the process.

We switch to the browser window - we see a notification about the addition of a new extension to Microsoft Edge. Reading detailed information about the plugin and enable it.

Everything, the plugin is installed and ready to use. It will now appear in the Extensions section of Edge's main menu.

You can click on each of the list of installed add-ons, after which its additional settings open.

Similarly, we add other extensions to Microsoft Edge.

Remove extensions from Edge

To remove a plugin from Edge, click on it in the list installed extensions(Main menu - "Extensions").

When Microsoft first released their sexy, fast new browser Edge, last July, a user's response was... vague.

Edge was arguably a little too minimalistic in its approach to visioning the modern web browser. He proposed several new interesting features(such as drawing) but it lacked most of the features such as browser extensions, which caused people to move from Internet Explorer in Chrome or Firefox.

Microsoft hopes to fix this issue in the upcoming annual windows update 10, in which Edge will finally get support for browser extensions. In anticipation of this update, we took a look at the list of the best, or rather the list of all browser extensions that are currently available for Edge. While these extensions are not yet available for regular Windows users 10, Windows 10 Insiders who have installed Insider Preview Build 14291 or later can try them out right now.

Adblock and Adblock Plus.
AdBlock and Adblock Plus are actually two completely separate ad blocking extensions with very similar functionality (and names). Both of these extensions, once installed, will block most of the ads on the websites you visit in Edge (you can still whitelist domains in the extension's settings, which we hope you will put our www.website in too) . Since AdBlock and Adblock Plus are basically the same extensions, installing both of them will not give you any benefits and will only slow down your browser.

Page Analyzer.
The Page Analyzer extension is mainly for web developers - it scans and analyzes open web pages in Edge for performance issues, common errors, and opportunities for optimization.

Save to Pocket.
Save to Pocket is an extension for users popular app Pocket for delayed reading. This extension adds a Pocket button to your browser; press the button when you're on a web page you want to set aside for later reading, and it'll be automatically saved to Pocket and synced to other devices for offline reading.

Microsoft translator.
The Microsoft Translator extension makes browsing foreign language sites a little easier. When you have this extension enabled, you will see a translation icon in the address bar of foreign language sites - just click on this icon and the Microsoft service will instantly translate the site to the current one Windows language. Microsoft Translator supports over 50 languages.

Reddit Enhancement Suite.
The Reddit Enhancement Suite extension adds additional functionality to the Reddit website. Most of these tweaks are small but handy for Reddit users: simple account switching, best navigation on comments, and endless scrolling of Reddit on the home page.

Mouse Gestures.
The Mouse Gestures extension adds mouse gestures to Edge. To use these gestures, press and hold the right mouse button anywhere inside the browser, and then put the mouse into gesture mode. For example, moving the mouse to the right and then up can open a new tab, making a lightning bolt gesture to the left will return you to the previous page.

OneNote Web Clipper.
The OneNote Web Clipper extension adds a button that you can click to capture all or part of a web page to save to OneNote. Web Clipper can either capture the entire page, or take a screenshot of one part of the page, or capture the page in the "Article" format, which includes only the text part of the page. You can save all these "cuttings" in a notebook book OneNote to choose from, this is convenient if you are trying to collect information of the same type in a heap.

Pin It Button.
The PinterestPin It Button extension is similar to OneNote Web Clipper except for Pinterest. This extension adds a Pin It button to Edge. By default, this button appears next to other extensions at the top of the menu bar, but you can change its settings to show the button next to address bar for easier access. The Pin It button lets you pin something you see on a page - like photos - to a board of your choice on Pinterest.

In early August, Microsoft released the second major update for its operating system Windows 10, which is called . The update brought a lot of all kinds of interesting and useful changes, but now I would like to focus on the appearance of extensions in Microsoft Edge. In today's material, I will tell you about thirteen add-ons for this browser. Why exactly thirteen? Everything is very simple. Because there are thirteen of them in total!

AdBlock and AdBlock Plus

Most of all, Microsoft Edge users (and there really are) wanted to get the AdBlock ad blocker. It was these add-ons (AdBlock and AdBlock Plus) that appeared (still in insider builds) for the browser among the first. AdBlock and AdBlock Plus differ in the name of the number of settings, but with their main task - blocking ads - both extensions do an excellent job.

Pin it Button and Translator

Also in the list of extensions is the Pin it Button add-on from the Pinterst service, which allows you to collect ideas (articles, images) found on the Web in one place. Not without a translator Translator for Microsoft Edge - the add-on allows you to translate web pages or selected words into any of the 50 available languages. If not everyone will need the first extension, then the second one is a must-have.

OneNote Web Clipper and LastPass

An extension for the popular LastPass password manager is also available for Microsoft Edge, but the thing is, I don't personally know anyone who uses it. But in general, there are such people, so the addition will definitely come in handy for them. As for OneNote Web Clipper, this extension allows you to save the web pages you need in OneNote, edit them there (select some elements or cut them out), and then share them with friends or just save them for yourself.

Evernote Web Clipper and Amazon Assistant

The Evernote Web Clipper extension is in many ways similar to OneNote Web Clipper, only it already works, as the name implies, with the Evernote service. If we talk about the Amazon Assistant extension, it allows you to follow the deals of the day, compare product prices, and quickly open popular sections on Amazon. It is for people who often order something from Amazon that the add-on will definitely be very useful.

Office Online and Save to Pocket

If you use Office Online, then the corresponding extension will be very relevant to the topic. With it, you can view the latest edited documents and literally create a new one in one click. The set of features is still minimal, but the already available features make life easier. Well, everything is simple with Save to Pocket - the add-on allows you to quickly add your favorite materials to the delayed reading service Pocket.

Reddit, Mouse Gestures and Page Analyzer

Reddit and Mouse Gestures extensions appeared in another one of

Yes, there are not so many extensions available yet. Only thirteen pieces. But the fact is that this list contains almost all the most popular ones. Personally for myself, I don’t see a problem with this at all, because the only addition for Google Chrome The one I use is called Google Mail Checker (it shows the number of new messages). It is not yet available for Microsoft Edge (and it is not a fact that it will appear soon), but the fact is that the tools Windows systems 10 allow you to display new mail notifications in the Action Center. Which is also quite convenient. And what extensions (browser does not matter) do you use? Write in the comments.
