Question from user

Hello.

Recently I reinstalled Windows - switched from 7 to 10. Everything seems to work, but photos and pictures open in some stupid application. How to return the standard photo view, as it was in Windows 7?

Good time.

By default, in the new Windows 10, instead of the standard viewer (which was in Windows XP and 7), the Photos application (or in English "Photos") is used. On the one hand, it has somewhat richer functionality, but on the other hand, it is not so convenient (and requires getting used to 👀).

In general, in this note we will consider how you can restore the "old" way of viewing photos in the "new" OS (just like in a joke: “We used to live well, now it’s even better! But still, again I want to live well ...”).

How to return the default viewer

First you need to open the settings of Windows 10 (you can use the link in START, or a combination of buttons Win + i).

After that, go to the section "Default Apps" , find subtitle "Photo Viewer" and click on the select button... (see the screenshot below for an example).

Important! If you do not have the "Windows Photo Viewer" item in the application selection list, you need to add some parameters to the registry. You can do this with a special file - (zipped with WinRAR).

Now, if you double-click on any of the photos, it should automatically open in the good old viewer (as in the example below).

I can't help but notice that some file formats (mostly less common) may continue to open in the app "Photo" . To fix this, right-click on such a file and open it properties .

After setting such settings, all files of the same format will be opened in the selected application.

PS

By the way, in my humble opinion, it is much better to use a special viewer, for example, ACDSee, to work with pictures and photos.

Judge for yourself, firstly, it supports almost all graphics formats; secondly, it allows you to view photos in archives (without extracting them); thirdly, it allows you to edit and process pictures using the built-in editor. However, it also has analogues (see article link below).

The better to look at pictures in Windows: programs for viewing images and photos -

That's all for now. Successful work!

In Windows 7, I'm used to opening photos and pictures through the standard “ Windows Photo Viewer". After I reinstalled on my computer operating system on the Windows 10, I was unpleasantly surprised. The fact is that in Windows 10, all images by default open through an application called “ Photo". Somehow I didn’t like it right away, and I wanted to change it to a classic image viewer.

But after I right clicked on the photo and selected in context menu item “Open with” - it turned out that the standard “ Windows Photo Viewers" there is no :

In the control panel, in the default program settings, it also did not appear:

In order to return the ability to open images through standard remedy“Windows Photo Viewer” you need to add some missing settings to the registry in Windows 10.

To do this, download the finished registry file. Unpack the downloaded archive and run the registry file by double-clicking:

A warning window will appear - click on it " Yes”:
Then a message will appear that the changes have been successfully made to the registry - click " OK”:
That's the solution to the problem!

Now we right-click on any photo on our computer - select “Open with” in the context menu. We see that is now available to select " Viewing Windows Photos”:

Now, if you wish, you can go to the system settings and select the default application for viewing photos - “Windows Photo Viewer”:

In Windows 10, by default, it opens images using the Photos app. However, you can also continue to use the old photo viewer, which did not disappear under Windows 10, but is only used for special files images.

Activate the old photo viewer

Note. Not all features of the old Photo Viewer are currently available. You can view your pictures as you are used to, but direct printing from the viewer is no longer possible.

To activate the old viewer, you will need to make some changes to the Windows registry. To do this, you need to open the registry editor: press the key combination to open the Run command.

Enter the command "regedit" and confirm with "OK". Confirm the UAC prompt. The Registry Editor will open. On the left, navigate to the path:

"HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows Photo Viewer\Capabilities\FileAssociations".

Right-click on the empty area on the right side, and under New, select String Value.

Name the string ".jpg" and open it with a double click.

Then set the Value field to the parameter name "PhotoViewer.FileAssoc.Tiff" without quotes and confirm with "OK".

Repeat for all other desired image formats such as PNG, JPEG, GIF, or BMP. The value always remains the same.

Select the default viewer in Windows 10

Close Registry Editor and open any image file.

Now you have a choice between several viewers. Click on any image, for example, with a JPG extension, and select "Windows Photo Viewer" as the viewer.

Then turn on the "Always use this app to open files" option.

Windows 10: Use the old image viewer
