What are lists in Word called? Create styles for headings and multi-level lists in Word

It's hard to imagine without a computer modern life. The need for a computer already arises among schoolchildren when they need to prepare an essay or report on a specific topic.

To write such works exists. This program has several versions. All of them are maximally adapted for the convenience of users.

You can do the work qualitatively, knowing the generally accepted rules for the design of the text. As a rule, any document contains lists of objects, their properties or procedures. These lists are called lists. How to make lists in Word and what they are, will be written later.

Types and rules of registration of lists

Various types of lists are used to sequentially enumerate certain data.

A list in Word can be done in different ways:

  1. Numbered. In such a list, each item is numbered. It can be in the form of Arabic and Roman numerals or letters. They can be followed by a dot or a quote. The characters following the first item in the listing are set automatically. They look like this: "A.", "D.", "1.", "I.", "1)", "a)".
  2. Marked. In such a list, instead of numbers and letters, various images are used, which are called markers. The markers are different. It can be dots, dashes, ticks, arrows and various geometric figures. If desired, you can add your own images to the original list. The type of markers must match the style of the text.
  3. Multilevel. These types of enumerations combine bulleted and numbered types. This is a register style in which each item includes a separate list. Different levels can be distinguished both by numbers and letters, and by markers.

Registration of inventories is carried out according to the relevant rules for working with text documents.

These rules are:

  1. If in numbered register there is a dot after a number or letter, then the sentence begins with a capital letter. A dot is placed at the end. Items can consist of several sentences.
  2. In bulleted lists, sentences begin with a small letter. A semicolon is placed at the end of paragraphs. A dot is placed at the end last point. Such paragraphs consist of one sentence, in which there can be only one word. The markers have the same style.
  3. Selection of lists in the text is allowed. To do this, you can use a different type of font, change its size or color. A visual way to highlight a fragment in the text is to change the indent from the edge of the page.
  4. All registries begin after a single sentence that ends with a colon.
  5. A document cannot begin with an enumeration and end with it.

In order for the document to be visual and easy to read, it is recommended to use directories various kinds when writing it.

Making Lists in Microsoft Office Word

The ability to make lists correctly is necessary for both a student and an office worker. The control panel allows you to select types of symbols with one click, without wasting time searching for the desired folder.

Having created word document, you see a blank page and a toolbar at the top of the monitor. As a rule, the document opens in the "Home" section. Part of the panel is occupied by .

This section contains 3 buttons with which you can select the type of directory symbols:

  • markers;
  • numbering;
  • multilevel list.

Each such button has an arrow on the right, by clicking on which, you can see and select the format for marking points. The choice of format is carried out by hovering the cursor over the desired icon and pressing the left mouse button.

After that, the selected symbol appears on the page, which is the beginning of the list. After the character, a message is typed, followed by a period or semicolon. The transition to the next item is carried out by pressing the "Enter" key. The text editor automatically sets the next character one level down. In a similar way, the listing continues to the last item.

You can cancel the enumeration by pressing the "Enter" key a second time or the button of the corresponding list format in the "Paragraph" section.

If necessary, the listing in the text can be removed. To do this, select the desired section of text and click on the activated button on the display with the cursor.

If the need for an inventory appeared after writing, then it is easy to do. To do this, select a part of the text and click on the button desired format. After that, it remains to place punctuation marks and set the indent.

When writing texts, sometimes you have to use such a design method as lists. Most often, these can be some enumerations of homogeneous elements or lists of unrelated elements. First, we will analyze the creation of simple lists, and then we will learn how to make a multi-level list based on a simple one in word.

List- This is a piece of text, designed in a special way. Each element of the list is written with newline and contains either a graphic marker or a character or numeric marker.

Lists allow you to conveniently structure the material. Bulleted lists visually highlight part of the text, and numbered lists allow you to combine even loosely related items. All these lists can also be multi-level.

Create a simple list

In the toolbar on the tab home there is a section Paragraph. It contains the necessary buttons for working with lists. See drawing.

  1. Create a bulleted list. When you click on the triangle on the right, you can select the type of graphic markers in the list.
  2. Create a numbered list. By clicking on the triangle on the right, you can select the type of list numbering.
  3. Create a multilevel list. You can choose from different design options.
  4. Decrease the indent of the list from the border of the document field to the beginning of the paragraph.
  5. Increasing the indent of the list from the border of the document field to the beginning of the paragraph.
  6. Change the line spacing between list items.

There are several options for enabling list styling, but I recommend using the following:

  • Type the text of the future list in its entirety, beating off each new element of the list with a paragraph (press the Enter key).
  • After entering the last element of the list, make a blank paragraph by pressing the Enter key. This is necessary to prevent the list from being applied to subsequent text.
  • Select all rows with list items and click the button to apply the appropriate list view.

If you have selected the wrong type of list, then select its elements again and click the button with the required type of list.

Note! The selection must start from the first character of the text of the list items, and not from the marker.

Change the distance from the bullet to the text

When creating lists, a situation may arise when the markers are too close to the text or are too far from them. You can use the horizontal ruler tools to correct the position of the marker.

First line indent (7)– moves the marker to the left or right relative to the list element.
Ledge (8)– moves the list element to the left or right relative to the marker.
Indent left (9)– moves the marker and list item to the left or right.

Attention! To change the position of all list markers, you must select the list. To change the position in only one element of the list, it is enough to place the text cursor in the line of the list element.

Create a multilevel list

A multilevel list is created in the same way as a simple one, only in the toolbar you need to click button 3

In the library that opens, select the desired version of the multilevel list. After applying this operation, you will see a list (bulleted or numbered) that looks like a simple one. But this is only because this list all elements are still on the same level.

And now for each element of the list you need to set its own level. To do this, we do this:

  • Click on the line with the list element for which you want to change the indent level and click button 5(see figure "Tools for working with lists").
  • Click on the next line and click again button 5(you can click multiple times to increase the indentation level).

Practical part

To consolidate your text formatting skills, complete the following task.
Dial or in your text editor. Create multilevel lists from the given text.

  • break the text into list items, starting each with a new paragraph,
  • make a copy of the received text,
  • apply a bulleted list to the first text and a numbered list to the second,
  • adjust the levels of the list items.

A multilevel list is a list that contains elements that are indented at different levels. In a programme Microsoft Word there is a built-in collection of lists in which the user can choose the appropriate style. Also, in Word, you can create new styles of multilevel lists yourself.

1. Click in the document where you want the multilevel list to start.

2. Click the button "Multilevel list" located in the group "Paragraph"(tab "Home").

3. Choose the style of the multilevel list you like from those presented in the collection.

4. Enter the list items. To change the hierarchy levels of the elements presented in the list, click "TAB"(deeper level) or SHIFT+TAB(return to the previous level.

Creating a new style

It is quite possible that among the multi-level lists presented in the Microsoft Word collection, you will not find one that suits you. It is for such cases that this program provides the ability to create and define new styles of multilevel lists.

The new layered list style can be applied each time a subsequent list is created in a document. In addition, a new user-created style is automatically added to the style collection available in the program.

1. Click on the button "Multilevel list" located in the group "Paragraph"(tab "Home").

2. Select .

3. Starting from level 1, enter the desired number format, set the font, the arrangement of elements.

4. Repeat the same steps for the next levels of the multilevel list, defining its hierarchy and type of elements.

Note: When defining a new style for a multilevel list, you can use both bullets and numbers in the same list. For example, in the section “Numbering for this level” you can scroll through the list of styles of a multilevel list by selecting the appropriate marker style, which will be applied to a specific level of the hierarchy.

5. Click "OK" to accept the change and close the dialog box.

Note: The multilevel list style that was created by the user will automatically be set as the default style.

To move the elements of a multilevel list to another level, use our instruction:

1. Select the list item to be moved.

2. Click on the arrow next to the button “Markers” or "Numbering"(group "Paragraph").

3. Select an option from the drop down menu “Change list level”.

4. Click on the level of the hierarchy to which you want to move the element of the multilevel list you have selected.

Defining new styles

At this stage, it is necessary to clarify what is the difference between the points “Define new list style” and “Define a new multilevel list”. The first command is appropriate to use in situations where you need to change the style created by the user. A new style created with this command will null out all occurrences of it in the document.

Parameter “Define a new multilevel list” it is extremely convenient to use in cases where you need to create and save a new list style that will not be changed in the future or will be used only in one document.

Manual numbering of list items

In some documents containing numbered lists, it is necessary to provide the ability to manually change the numbering. At the same time, it is necessary that MS Word correctly changes the numbers of the following elements of the list. One example of this type of document is legal documentation.

To manually change the numbering, you must use the “Set initial value” parameter - this will allow the program to correctly change the numbering of the following elements of the list.

1. Click right click click on the number in the list that you want to change.

2. Select an option “Set Initial Value”, and then perform the required action:

3. The numbering order of the list will be changed according to the values you specified.

That, in fact, is all, now you know how to create multi-level lists in Word. The instruction described in this article is applicable to all versions of the program, whether it is Word 2007, 2010 or newer versions.

Making multilevel lists

To create a multi-level list, the text of the document must be prepared accordingly.

If you want to apply a multi-level list to document headings, these headings must be styled accordingly.

If you want to apply a multi-level list to plain text, paragraphs formatted using the list must differ in indentation on the left. The lower the text level, the greater the first line indent or left indent for the entire paragraph. The difference in indentation must be at least 0.32 cm. The more indented a paragraph is, the lower its level will be. Indentation can be assigned before the multilevel list is applied or after it is set.

To design a multilevel list, the prepared text is selected, and then the command is executed Format/List or command List context menu. In the tab multilevel dialog box List (rice. 11.12) you need to select the desired design option and double-click on it with the left mouse button.

Depending on what was selected, the text will be formatted with bullets or numbering. Just like in the design of other lists, each design option for a multilevel list has its own indentation parameters for the paragraphs being formatted, and also puts down its own tab stops. In this case, the indent sizes set during the design of paragraphs can be changed. In addition, some types of multilevel lists give heading styles to numbered text.

You can click Numbered list by default toolbar Formatting(cm. rice. 11.1). The same button is convenient to use to remove the design of a multilevel list. It is enough to select a fragment of the document for which you want to remove the design, and click the button Numbered list by default. The form will be removed.

To do, and, let's figure out how to do lists in Word.

To begin, consider sibling list. To do it, you need to type the text of the list. You do not need to add any numbers, letters, or similar designations before each item. Just write one item, click Enter, then the second item, press again Enter, and so on, until the entire list is complete.

Then select it. On the tab Home - Paragraph choose whether you want the list to be bulleted or numbered.

bulleted list the default is indicated by black dots. By clicking on the small triangle to the right of the bulleted list icon, you can call up a drop-down menu and select the marker you need from the library.

If among the proposed options there is not the marker that you want, you can select the item Define new marker , and choose a marker from symbols or drawings. The drawings are ready, but if you again did not find what you need, click Import, and add a drawing from the images that you have on your computer.

numbered list the default is numbers. But, as in the case of bulleted list, to the right of the icon there is a triangle, after clicking on which a menu of other numbering options opens. It can be letters, latin numbers, simple numbers with brackets. Choose any option you like.

If among the proposed options you again did not find what you need, select the item Define new number format and write what you want. First, select the numbering, then write down how this numbering will look like. The symbols, brackets, and punctuation that you add to the format will appear in each list number. You can see the result in the window Sample. Finally press the button Font, and format the list permanently.

List Formatting

Formatting lists in Word is not much different from formatting plain text. Select the list and in the tab home choose color, font, line spacing and other formatting options.

You can also format the indents. To do this, you must have the ruler above the workspace turned on. If there is no ruler, go to the tab View, and check the box next to Ruler .

The ruler has triangular sliders. The top slider indicates the indent from which the red line starts. Bottom - indent the rest of the text.

Select the text you want to indent and move the sliders. If you move the square slider under the bottom triangular slider, both sliders will move at the same time.

If the numbered list is interleaved with text

Sometimes you need to make sure that the list in Word alternates with text snippets. It is implemented quite simply. After the last item in the list, press Enter, and press in the tab home numbered list button. After that, write in plain text.

To continue the list, press again Enter, and press the list button again. To the left of the first item on the list, you will see an icon with a lightning bolt. Click on it and choose Continue numbering . The numbering will continue.

Multilevel list

To make a multi-level list, you must first create a single-level list. After that, put the cursor in front of the item that you want to transfer to the second level, and in the tab Home - Paragraph press the button Increase indent .

If you need to send the item to the third level, press the button Increase indent again. If, on the contrary, you need to transfer the item from the third level to the second, or from the second to the first, press the button Decrease indent .

To format a multilevel list, you can use the button Multilevel list , the drop-down menu next to this button. If you do not like the proposed options, you can click Define a new list style , and write your own styles for each level.
