It is clear that this is absolutely inefficient, so let's see how this can be done. As a guinea pig, we will use District of Columbia (DC) Mayor Muriel Bowser (2017) as a random city official. In the examples below, its number has been changed.

Step 1: Using Area Codes

If you think of the target's phone number as one of the possible 10 digit phone numbers United States, you will quickly realize that 10 billion North American phone numbers is too big a list to search effectively. Luckily for the hacker, this list can be shortened thanks to the North American Numbering Plan (NANP), which outlines guidelines for assigning phone numbers in the US.

Let's take an example: 234-235-5678. Looking at NANP, we see that the first three numbers (234) are the area code, and the plan allows 2 to 9 as the first digit, 0 to 9 as the second and third. This information immediately excludes one billion possible numbers from the hacker's list.

A hacker can also quickly narrow down searches if they know or can get an educated guess about where you live - just a quick Google search can be enough. By doing this, the hacker will reduce his list of phone numbers by another 9 billion 990 million numbers.

The next three numbers after the area code (235 in our example) are the central office prefix telephone company. Again, the plan calls for 2 to 9 for the first digit and 0-9 for the second and third digits, but with a caveat.

In area codes where the second digit is 1, the third cannot also be 1. This rule will also remove a large number of phone numbers from the hacker's list. The last four digits of the phone number is the number telephone line, in this case - 5678.

We can reasonably assume that the DC Mayor will have the DC code and that the hacker can also find account target on Facebook and will probably also be able to find the home or current city where the target lives or works. Some large cities, such as Los Angeles, will have multiple area codes, but no matter how many individual area codes belong to the same city, this rule still greatly reduces the list of possible phone numbers that hackers can use.

Step 2. Choose the latest numbers

Now that we know that our target number is 202-???-????, we should try to remove as many of these question marks as possible, which will make it easier to find the phone number on Facebook a bit later. Luckily, Facebook is on our side and made it probably the second most a simple step after using the area code. To get the last two numbers, we need to follow a few steps in the password reset process.

Step 3: Use External Sources

Services such as PayPal and others with over 218 million users can help expand the information that the attacker has collected. In our case, if the target is also a PayPal user, then the hacker can get two extra digits of the phone number we are looking for.

In the screenshot above, you may have noticed that the first email address listed is a Gmail account that starts with "M" and ends with "R".

It's funny, but our target's first name starts with "M" and her last name ends with "R". It literally screams "I used my name as an email address!". To test this hypothesis, we test this address in Gmail by simply typing it.

Google accepted it, but that doesn't mean it's our target's email address. A hacker can test this by performing the same password reset trick that was used in the Facebook story.

Hmmm... it just so happens that this account also has a phone number ending in 69. Coincidence? We don't think. Now that we have an email to work with, we can switch to PayPal in a new tab and use the same password reset trick again.

This time, when we get to the password reset screen, we will get not only all four digits of the phone line number, but also the first number of the area code!

This may tell us that we are on the right track with the area code and validate the conclusions from all of our previous work on finding the last few digits in a phone number. This means that we have the number 202 - ??? 6969. In other words, our list of 10 billion options phone numbers turned into a list of only a few thousand options in a few minutes.

Step 4. Brute force the smart way

On the this moment a hacker could just start putting random numbers into the Facebook search bar, but that's still a very inefficient way. And what will a lazy hacker do? He will take advantage special function Facebook, which allows binary searches.

Facebook allows you to download contact lists in CSV format and then tells us if they are registered with Facebook so we can add them as friends. By compiling our own list of all potential phone numbers, we can quickly eliminate large chunks of this list with incorrect numbers.

In this case, we know that the number must be between 202-000-6969 and 202-999-6969. By cutting this in half and building a list of numbers from 202-000-6969 to 202-500-6969, we can effectively eliminate half of our list, since our target will only be in one of the two half lists created.
