Today we will talk about rare gadgets - about players for sports. Few people feel the need for such devices, but those who really need them do not have much choice. Sony, knowing this, could not strain too much and concoct a waterproof player with mediocre characteristics. However, the Sony Walkman W273S turned out to be quite pleasant, although it could have been better. Let's figure it out now.

Equipment

In a small square box you can find the MP3 player itself, a special tape and Charger uncommon form.

All this is in a special fabric bag that you can take with you to the pool or the gym and not just throw the player into your bag.

In addition, the W273S comes with two sets of silicone eartips of various sizes.

The first are intended for using the gadget in everyday life, so to speak, on land, as well as during swims in the pool. The second - created exclusively for swimming. In the inner hole of the latter there is a thin protective film, which prevents moisture from getting inside the speakers.

Because of this baffle, the volume of the sound may be lower than when using conventional ear pads. Do not forget that our ears differ in the size of the ear canals not only from one person to another, they are also different among themselves. In other words, the left ear canal may be slightly larger than the right, and vice versa. Did not know? Now you will take care of your Walkman by installing the most suitable ear cushions in terms of density so that water does not get inside the speakers. The earbud sizes range from the smallest (S) to the largest (LL). In general, Sony's concern for users is visible here with the naked eye.

Appearance and ergonomics

The speakers and, in general, all the “guts” of the device are located in somewhat enlarged headphones, which are inserted into the ear canals and connected to each other by a flexible rubber tube. The speaker housing is made of matte plastic, rough to the touch. The gold inserts are smooth. On the reverse side of the left side there is an LED, on the right side there are metal contacts that need to be combined with the substrates on the charger. We will return to it later.

On the flexible cable between the speakers is a soft rubber band, by adjusting the position of which you can tighten the player on your head or loosen it. This lock can be removed or left as is. The manufacturer also recommends pressing the gadget to the head with swimming goggles while swimming so that the water pressure does not push the player from its rightful place.

In any case, the device is attached to the ears and does not cause discomfort.

Sony decided not to make their favorite plugs on the body of the gadget, but to charge the player using a wired docking station. The Walkman is inserted into the charger, the microUSB cable of which is connected to the computer, and the charging and synchronization process takes place. A PC or Mac easily detects the device as a simple flash drive where you can throw music.

Unfortunately, there is very little memory - 4 GB.

The cradle supplied with the kit is of course not waterproof. It has a small LED that glows red when powered. As soon as the device is fully charged, the indicator goes out - it's time to shoot.

By the way, the full charge time is 1.5 hours. There is a fast charging function, which is extremely convenient. Imagine for a moment: you are going to a workout, you take the player in your hand, but it is not charged. No problem!

Three minutes and an hour of music playback is guaranteed.

This, by the way, is a regular session in the pool or a normal workout in the gym.

The left and right headphones have their own player control buttons. Everything is standard here: volume keys, track switching, play and pause, Shuffle mode, power button and device lock lever. The movement of the buttons is not very distinct and tight. It could have been more convenient.

The layout of all controls takes some getting used to. At first, I switched songs, instead of making the sound louder or quieter. However, the learning process is fast and during the second use there will be no problems with this.

In water

The Walkman is IPX5 and IPX8 water resistant. The first tells us that the player is capable of withstanding a direct jet of water (12.5 l/min.) for approximately three minutes from a distance of 3 centimeters. The second class guarantees that the player will not get wet with the speakers inserted into the ears when immersed in water to a depth of 2 meters for 30 minutes.

Of course, you should not swim with the player in open water, such as the sea or ocean. The ingress of sea salt automatically removes the warranty from the device and no one, as they say, is responsible for anything.

In the instructions for the device, the manufacturer himself indicates that moisture getting inside the speakers is, in principle, a normal phenomenon. You need to dry the headphones thoroughly and try a different size of earbuds so that they sit more tightly. In any case, it is still worth treating the player with care, since liquid is always destructive for any, even protected electronics.

Sound

The player sits very tightly in the ears, respectively, external noise and other interference practically do not interfere with immersion in music.

The sound quality is at a good level. All frequencies are clearly visible, with the exception, as it seemed to me, of the bass. The bottom end is dry and not very clear, which makes dubstep or powerful percussion parts lose their musical aesthetic a bit.

Simply put: somehow it does not shake.

The volume threshold is low, that is, at its maximum value, the blood from the ears does not gush, as it happens, for example, in the iPod. And yet, given that the player uses in-ear headphones, I would recommend being very careful with this. After all, the sound stream in such headphones rushes with all its might directly to the eardrums.

Audiophiles will be wondering what formats the Sony Walkman NWZ-W273S supports. Among them, support for MP3, WMA, AAC-LR and Linear PCM is announced. A very meager set of extensions.

The player has interesting feature ZAPPIN, the essence of which is to play small pieces of recorded tracks one after another. At any time you can go to full version songs by pressing the Play button. The thing is funny, so to speak, to scroll through the songs and choose the right one in this moment. Whether it is necessary or not - let everyone decide for himself.

Software

There are files in the Walkam's memory special utilities to work with the device. I tried the Content Transfer program, which is a very simple tool for uploading music to the player or auto-syncing songs from a folder selected in advance. The Mac version looks scary.

That's not all. The player is compatible with Windows Media Player or iTunes, as stated on the official website. Unfortunately, my iTunes refused to recognize the player as some kind of music device, so the manufacturer's statement about compatibility with this music processor remains only in theory.

In any case, the Walkman is recognized by the computer as a regular flash drive, where you can put your favorite songs without any software crutches. This will make it easier and faster.

Models and prices

The price for the Walkman NWZ-W273S was set at around 3,599 rubles in official store from Sony. The 8 GB version of memory already costs 4,290 rubles. As always, you can find cheaper. For example, in Svyaznoy our device will cost you 3,390 rubles. The official website reports four available colors: black, white, blue and orange. However, on sale you can also find a version with a red body and gold inserts.

Outcome

In my opinion, the player has two drawbacks. The first and subjective one is that low frequencies are not developed enough. The second and already more objective is the amount of memory. Still, 4 or 8 GB of memory in our time already looks somehow indecently small.

Is it worth parting with your money to buy a Walkman NWZ-W273S?

The player has few competitors, as the scope is very narrow. The most obvious rivals of the Japanese player are Chinese Noname gadgets from ebay.com for ten dollars apiece. The functionality is exactly the same, but the sound quality is noticeably behind the Walkman due to the cheap headphones included. Here, you know, to each his own. Saving? In this case, take a Chinese, or you can have two at once. Convenience and trouble-free - then feel free to buy W273S.

He or it? Or maybe they? He (they, it) is a special device. So special that it is not far from the crisis of self-identification. Design and build

Someone's dream - a device completely devoid of wires - in the case of the Sony Walkman NWZ-WH303 is embodied in the form of medium-sized over-ear headphones with a built-in player. "Thing in itself" in view of this fact turned out to be small, although the headphones are somewhat bulkier than it might seem from the pictures. And not too light: 290 grams. For stationary gaming headsets, this may be not bad, but for a device worn on a sometimes thin and weak neck, it is noticeable.

If there is metal in the case design, then from the outside it can only be seen on the sides of the hoop next to the cup mounts: these are built-in speakers or speakers that broadcast, so to speak, outward - the second hypostasis of the device. The main ones are hidden in medium-sized overlay cups.

The whole ears do not fit in them, but thanks to the soft leatherette of the ear cushions, this is not a problem. Although during prolonged wear, I begin to feel a certain pressure in this area, although the mount is not at all small: I wear the headphones at the minimum size of the hoop.

The hoop unfolds so that the device can be put on a head of a fairly impressive diameter. In the place where it touches the back of the head, this plastic rim, like almost the entire body, is covered with a leatherette strip without softener. On the one hand, the hoop is elastic and the device feels tightly seated, on the other hand, I manage to throw it off quite easily, for this it is enough to shake my head vigorously. That is, the Sony Walkman NWZ-WH303 is not suitable for running and other sports activities. The cups rotate 90 degrees in the same plane (if you hang a hoop around your neck, when you turn it, they will lie like ear cushions on your chest).

The device looks very neat and stylish gaming headset(even colors - black with red speak about it). That is, the design is pleasant, good and solid, but it cannot be called sophisticated.

The material is high-quality plastic, the device is assembled well, there are no squeaks, gaps, looseness. But there are many all sorts of switches and buttons. Well, where should they be?

Buttons/switches

So. There is a reset button and two toggle switches at the top of the left cup. The second toggle switch switches the device between headphone speakers and loudspeakers. The first one turns the player on or off, thereby putting the NWZ-WH303 into headphone mode. To use the device as “just headphones”, you need to connect them to a wire with two 3.5 mm plugs at the ends (included in the kit), and connect the other side of the wire to the source. Player, smartphone or laptop.

The connector for these purposes is located here, on the left cup, only at the bottom. Nearby, a microUSB cover and an OPR indicator are hidden (when the player is turned on, it lights up green if everything is fine, red if an error has occurred, orange when charging, and so on).

On the side of this cup there is also a button labeled sound/illumination, with the former denoted by a dot and the latter by a dash. This means that with a short press you can change the sound mode, with a long press you can turn on and off the white backlight of the corporate letter W (Walkman, that is) on the outside of the cups.

The right cup sheltered the player's buttons for playback, volume control, as well as switching between playlists and random playback.

In work

When connected to a computer, the device starts charging. It takes less than two hours to fully charge the battery, but it's hard for me to say how long the player is discharged. I will say one thing: it works for a long time. The manufacturer claims 20 hours of continuous playback. I think this is not far from the truth: at least for about 17 hours in a row the player has already worked for sure. And now - about modes.

MP3 player. The audio player in this device lacks a display where it would be displayed what track is playing / will be playing, organizing by folders, and so on. In fact, organizing playlists in the Sony NWZ-WH303 is easy using a computer. To select a playlist, random or sequential playback of everything that is in memory, there is a Shuffle / Playlist key.

A long press on play turns on the ZAPPIN function. It allows you to play fragments of compositions (long, medium and short), thereby conducting an audio search for the desired composition. Sometimes it is useful: you hear the desired fragment, click on playback, and the track is played in full. Nevertheless, I can't say that it is able to completely replace the traditional visual search, which is not implemented in the player due to the lack of a display.

By default, lists can be created without installing proprietary software - via Windows Media. The system recognizes the Sony NWZ-WH303 as portable device. On its drive, application packages for Windows and Mac are found. In the case of "Windows" for creating lists is intended Sony program Media Go, in my opinion, is as inconvenient as Windows Media. However, there will be criticism. The main thing is that there is such an opportunity.

At first, it seemed to me that such a player would be convenient for those who are especially disturbed by wires - runners. However, I was mistaken: firstly, for these purposes it is somewhat heavy and bulky, and secondly, it does not hold on so firmly to the head. For example, it is enough for me to lightly shake my head so that it flies off. The player can play MP3, WMA, AAC-LC and Linear PCM files. In this list, we do not see flac, and, alas, this is not an accident. However, where there, the device has only 4 GB of memory. By today's standards - quite a bit, but for MP3 - enough. In terms of ergonomics, the controls will take some getting used to.

How to change path

The Sound button allows you to select one of three modes. Yes, I forgot to say: the player likes to talk. If you switch the playback or sound mode, he announces this in a pleasant female voice. In English, of course. So, I learned that sound effects are called One and Two. Or Off. I will say right away that an adequate sound stage is here only with Off.

Headphones. Through a 3.5 mm jack, you can connect a cord and another player or smartphone to the Sony NWZ-WH303. In order for the device to understand what they want from it, you need to move the switch to the Headphones position, aka Off, thereby stopping the internal player. Further, everything is simple.

Speakers. Finally, you can use the speakers built into the device. Why are they here? It's hard for me to say, I would still understand if they work in connection mode to external device. But no, in this case they are silent. Only the built-in player is suitable as a sound source. Imagine: there is one of these in headphones, but everyone around can hear. Whether a musical voyeur, or a philanthropist, sharing joy with everyone he meets, go figure it out. The quality of the speakers is average, the volume is sufficient for room conditions.

Sound

I have already said about the speakers, now about everything else. As well as from the built-in, and from a regular player (or smartphone), you can hear that the sound has quite a lot of low, but not the most low frequencies, and those closer to the middle. There is depth, but the detail is not the best, there is an acute shortage high frequencies. The sound is viscous, distorted. There is a kick drum effect, the scene is somewhat closed and clamped, but at the same time there is a feeling that this kick drum is deep, the sound seems to be divided into layers.

However, there is one feature in the sound of the device that may attract an inexperienced listener to it: it sounds very soft, without impact, as if all corners are smoothed out, and sound extremes are cut to an acceptable level for an untrained ear. The headphones are powerful enough, their volume is enough to listen to music in a noisy subway car. Soundproofing is very good in one direction: external sounds almost do not disturb the listener, but his music is quietly, but audible to those who are standing nearby.

In the dry matter

I suspect that such headphones-player are able to find their listener. It's just that this is not an audiophile, but a person who is not too confused on the exact transmission of sound, for whom comfort and convenience are important in the player in the first place. And there is comfort here: both sound (softness) and ergonomic (lack of wires). The idea, I must say, is not bad, it just needs to be improved. Is the Sony NWZ-WH303 Expensive? Today it can be bought for 1200 hryvnia. As for headphones, this is a lot. For that kind of money, you can buy very high-quality specimens with large speakers and adequate frequency response. As a player - the same. But as a hybrid, the player, along with headphones and speakers, and even taking into account the fact that the device can easily turn into stationary headphones for a laptop, is not bad.

You may ask me why this particular player? I went to the choice of this device for a long time. The problem was that there are a lot of MP3 players, with different functionality, with wires, headphones and other chips. But the problem is that a player was needed for active actions - this is running, the gym, and the main problem is swimming.

Anyone who constantly winds pools in training will understand me. Yes and good music when jogging or in the gym will only set the energy.

Of course, you can take any Bluetooth headset and connect it to your phone.

But constantly carrying the whole set of gadgets with you is not very convenient. You need to put your phone, headphones somewhere and look for a pocket where to put it all. And not all devices are not afraid of moisture, rain, water.

I'm already talking about swimming.

What didn't I like about regular players?

a constant pile of wires that constantly fall under the arm;

The complete set of the player is the player itself, a charging dock, a hanger for drying, 2 sets of plugs for ear plugs (why 2 - more about this below in the article) and a “ring” (remote control remote control player, which is worn on the finger of the hand.

The player is sold in 4 colors - black, white, blue and green. Boys usually take black, but girls can safely choose an additional color scheme.

At first I bought myself a player in black, but after 3 months of use, my wife could not stand it and also bought another model of a turquoise MP3 player. To be honest, I did not expect that in reality this color looks better than in the picture.

The player's remote control also looks quite attractive in various color forms.

The player itself has sections for Windows and Apple. For owners of OS Windows, there is a media content management program Media GO (link to the program website). There is no such program for Apple for this OS.

Before buying, I was afraid that the player already looked very large. It felt like he would just stick out my ears while wearing it 🙂

But if you look, Sony Walkman NWZ-WS613 weighs like a feather:

I did not immediately pay attention to such a trifle as a remote control player on my finger. Until I started using this "ring" to its full potential.

I want to devote a separate paragraph to this convenient addition to the player.

The idea of putting the remote control on your hand is simple and convenient. Now you do not need to look for the player or look for control buttons - all the functionality is at your fingertips.

I really liked controlling the music with one hand. I put the ring on my index finger and with my thumb I simply rewound tracks or adjusted the volume of music.

On the remote there are buttons - Pause, Play, Increase the volume, Decrease the volume, Fast forward, Rewind. To connect the remote to the player you need to hold center button continuously 3 sec. At the same time, the signal light on the end of the remote control will start flashing blue. You can see the indicator on the end of the remote at the bottom of the photo.

If you have a tight hand - no need to be afraid - the ring can be adjusted in diameter to dissolve or reduce the flexible rim of the strap. You can tighten the ring exactly to your finger thickness.

The remote control does not need to be directed anywhere - it does not work in the infrared range.

The only thing I wanted to warn you about is that you can only control your player in the air, it is impossible to transmit a signal underwater headphones. Water jams the signal.

Although I got out of this situation like this - I just swam to the side, raised my hand, connected to the player and switched the track.

The remote control is not afraid of water, so you can swim with it along with the player. 🙂

Another disadvantage is the use of the ring - the control panel in the gym is not very convenient. 🙁

If you are exercising with dumbbells, a barbell or on a horizontal bar, a ring on your hand may interfere with you.

In my opinion, the control panel is most convenient for jogging and other active sports activities that do not require hands to touch the sports equipment.

By the way, with the help of the remote you can control the playback of music on your smartphone via Bluetooth. Well, you need to climb to the ears to find the right button.

How to upload music to the player?

There are 2 options: via NFC or via USB connection through the docking station.

For this, a special docking station is used. It performs several functions:

charging the headphones through the contacts located on the right ear.
or transfer data to the player through the same contacts.

By the way, the player has a built-in lithium-ion battery, which allows you to listen to MP3 music continuously for 8 hours. Have a function fast charging. 3 minutes of charging will give you an additional 60 minutes of music playback.

The connection operation goes like this: you need to install the right ear and connect it to the docking contacts. You can also snap the left ear, but perhaps so that it does not hang around. 🙂

Of course, I would like to get a connection to the player from Sony USB3, but here there is a USB2 connector - White color. Although 4 GB loads quickly. Still, this is not a flash drive that is written with new data every day.

FROM reverse side, the docking station is unremarkable. Only the sticker indicates that it is Sony, made in Malaysia.

For those athletes who have everything “on fire”, the delivery includes 2 sets of earplugs (“plugs”) for the ears: for wearing outdoors and for swimming.

The main difference between the liners - plugs - is a hole in the middle. So the music will better "enter" the ear.

Plugs are attached to special tube holders, through which sound comes from the player's speakers. To remove them, you need to bend the skirt of the plug and simply pull them out of the tube.

It looks like a plug for outdoor sports. You clearly see a hole in the rubber part.

If you want to swim and dive with the player in the water, you need to change the plugs to waterproof ones. Their difference is that instead of a hole there is a thin membrane that does not let water through.

Let's now look at the player's headphones themselves.

The 2 ears of the player are connected with a flexible wire.

Each ear of the player is marked with a marker and signed so that the owner does not get confused - Left (left) and Right (right).

The right ear contains the charging and data contacts - you can see the yellow pads on the case. At the end there are music playback control buttons, a reset connector and Bluetooth connection mode control. But to be honest, I rarely use them to control music, I have enough control through the ring.

The power switch is located on the end of the right ear. If you want to turn on the player, hold it down for 2-3 seconds. and the indicator will turn green.

Actually, this is a multifunctional indicator. If you charge the player, it will glow yellow. And knowing the number of flashes and their intensity, you can determine the charge level of the music player.

Outside, you can see the platform for connecting NFC. Here you need to attach a smartphone for data transfer.

Let's move on to the player's left ear.

In this part, there are slightly fewer controls - the volume level and the track playback mode. Pressing the Mode button - you can choose how the player will play your tunes.

On the end of the left ear is a very useful button - the inclusion of Bluetooth mode.

I draw your attention to activate the mode and start connecting, you need to hold the mode button for an unusually long time - about 3-5 seconds. In this case, the indicator will turn blue.

Over the past two years, manufacturers have thrown hundreds of models onto the market, and for some reason no one has had a decent sports waterproof player. Only from Sony.

I think the success of the Walkman lies in three components:

1. Form factor

NWZ-WS613 are in-ear headphones, combined elastic silicone shackle, which plays the role of a retainer. The headphones themselves are passed behind the ear. This is the best design for sports.

2. Degree of protection

With the player, you can swim in the pool at a depth of up to 2 meters, and the safety margin is enough for rain, splashes, dust, sweat and tears from victories.

3. Sound

I recently did a review of similarly mounted sports headphones in which I admired the sound of their 12.4mm drivers. This is a really good size for sports monitors. Sony has even larger drivers - 13.5mm. And the sound is better. And the NWZ-WS613 cost 2000 rubles cheaper. I don’t understand what the catch is, given that you can’t get into the water with a Jabra. Probably, the New Year's price tags have not yet been rearranged.
