Smartphone sales percent. Retailers estimated the share of "Russian" smartphones in the market

Competition in the smartphone market in 2019 has shifted to new level. On the one hand, the market itself is no longer growing, on the other hand, the onslaught of Chinese manufacturers has dramatically increased, forcing other companies to act much more actively than before. In this article, we propose to evaluate the balance of power using the current rating of smartphone manufacturers.

The rating is not based on any personal preferences, but on the popularity of devices. Based on statistics from the European analytical company StatCounter. It calculates the success of manufacturers based on what share of the traffic their devices generate in the global network.

We will consider the main positions of the rating in detail, clearly demonstrating how the share of manufacturers has changed over the past six years. The brand performance for the first month of each year from 2013 to January of this year 2019 was taken as key points. One picture of the changes in the main market players is as follows:

This is how the top smartphone brands changed over the past six years until the beginning of 2019

In order not to turn the material solely into dry numbers, we have added a lot of relevant information about how and what the key smartphone developers around the world are doing now. What are they focused on? this moment or what else is being prepared to show users in the future. Text is updated.

Since the beginning of the year, Samsung has been flexing its muscles like never before. The company throws into battle entire lines of new smartphones, the first to start selling devices with 5G, ultrasound scanners, flexible displays and stereo cameras (ToF) on both sides

Specifically for Samsung smartphones also produces displays, memory, batteries and camera sensors (for example, the 48 MPx GM1 sensor in Redmi Note 7 is just from Samsung). However, 2019 turned out to be surprisingly difficult for the company, which is why the market share was increased by a symbolic 0.01% compared to last January:

  • 01.2013 – 22,69%
  • 01.2014 – 27,85%
  • 01.2014 – 27,85%
  • 01.2014 – 27,85%
  • 01.2017 – 33,71%
  • 01.2018 – 31,81%
  • 01.2019 – 31,82%

There are two reasons for the gradual weakening or, at least, slowing down of Samsung. The first and most compelling is the crushing onslaught of Chinese competitors. In recent years, they have rushed beyond their native China and are actively developing foreign markets, including the extremely profitable market of the European Union. The success of Huawei and Xiaomi there is already very tangible.

The second reason is the relatively coldly received flagship family. Visually, they practically did not differ from the S8, but at the same time received higher price tags. As a result, sales were not as impressive as the Koreans would like.

Frame from the presentation of the family of smartphones samsung galaxy S10

This year, the situation should be corrected by new ones (link is a comparison of all models, including the S10e), which have become a truly major, major update. They brought the following differences compared to the S9 line:

  • New design. Reduced bezels and mini opening for front camera;
  • Larger and higher quality displays: 6.1’’ and 6.4’’ vs. 5.8’’ and 6.2’’ for S9/S9+;
  • Screen fingerprint scanner. The most accurate and fastest ultrasonic sensor is used;
  • New processors. Exynos 9820 for Europe and Russia. Snapdragon 855 for US and China;
  • More RAM: 8 GB in S10|S10+ instead of 4 GB in S9 and 6 GB in S9+;

Galaxy S10 line: S10e, S10 and S10 Plus. The new design with a cut-out for the camera in the display has finally reduced the bezels of the devices to a minimum.

  • Triple main camera. Both in S10 and S10+. The third module is ultra wide-angle for capturing large scenes;
  • New front camera: 10 MPx, shooting in 4K resolution or 60 FPS for Full HD (the best front camera in smartphones according to DxOMark);
  • Less thickness. 7.8mm vs. 8.5mm in S9|S9+;
  • More powerful batteries. 3400 and 4100 mAh versus 3000 and 3500 in S9 and S9+ respectively;
  • More capacious drives. 128 GB instead of 64 GB in the base variant. Appearance of 512 GB versions;
  • (the ability to charge other smartphones);

The evolution of the Galaxy S flagships from S1 to S10+, as well as the very first Samsung smartphone on Android - Galaxy i7500 (top left)

  • New software: Android 9.0 and the new One UI shell out of the box;
  • [only for S10+] Dual front camera. The second module acts as a depth sensor. Dual camera S10+ shows best result among all front cameras in the DxOMark ranking;
  • [only for S10+] Up to 1TB internal storage for the first time(previously no more than 256 GB);
  • [only for S10+] Up to 12 GB of RAM for the first time(previously no more than 6 GB).

In turn, the latest ultra-fast UFS 3.0 flash memory, as well as RAM LPDDR5, Samsung decided to leave it until next year, or at least until . In more detail about the differences, taking into account many nuances, we told in a separate article, follow the link.

The S10 also became the world's first smartphone with an ultrasonic, rather than optical, in-display fingerprint scanner.

However, Samsung, of course, will not compete with flagships alone with the most powerful Chinese competitors. The full list of the company's key innovations this year is as follows:

  • Galaxy M- a new line for budget and medium models. Simple hardware, but a frameless design with a teardrop notch that was previously unusual for budget devices. In some models, the battery has an impressive capacity of 5000 mAh, in the upcoming M20s - 6000 mAh;
  • Galaxy A– development of the existing line for mid-range and basic smartphones. It also uses a bezel-less design with a petite cutout. Most models are equipped with a high-quality AMOLED display;

Surprisingly, the A80 outperformed the flagship Galaxy S10 in some ways. It has a frameless design with no cutouts in the screen, a huge camera resolution and a built-in ToF module. Moreover, a powerful bundle of cameras is available from both sides.

  • Galaxy S10e- a simplified version of the S10 flagships. It will get a flagship processor and camera, a fingerprint scanner on the side and a more affordable price tag. Also differs from the S10 with a regular flat screen instead of a curved one at the edges;
  • Galaxy S10, S10+, Note 10, Note 10+Samsung flagships in 2019. The announcement of S10/S10+ took place in February, sales started in March. Note 10 and unexpectedly Note 10+ ( before version"+" for Note did not exist) were announced in August;
  • Galaxy S10 5G and Galaxy Fold– experimental premium flagships. The most expensive Samsung smartphones in 2019 S10 5G received a fourth main camera and 5G support. In Russia, it is not yet officially sold. Galaxy Fold, Samsung's first foldable smartphone, will also receive premium hardware, but the release has been pushed back to the second half of the year due to complications.

Galaxy Fold - six cameras from different sides, as well as two screens. One of them is flexible - 7.3 '' when opened on the inside of the device. The second screen is a regular one, 4.6", located on the outside

Well, let's see if this Samsung will be enough to fight with numerous competitors, which will be discussed later.

2nd place: Apple - holding a punch against all Android manufacturers

Second place in the ranking of Apple. In the news, you probably heard that the "apple giant" faced relatively low demand for new iPhones and repeatedly reduced orders to factories in Asia for the production of these devices. This is true, but it is not yet worth dramatizing the situation around the company from Cupertino.

Apple really cannot sell as many iPhones as it initially wanted to and beat its own records of previous years. In addition, the company has serious problems in China and India. Tim Cook's hope for these two markets as growth points is not justified yet. The initiative there is entirely in the hands of Chinese companies.

In 2019, Apple has already ceased to indicate the number of smartphones and other gadgets sold. In turn, the last quarterly report for last year showed the absence of even a symbolic growth. However, the new iPhones themselves have become more expensive and Apple received 29% more money from them.

The general absence of sales records is explained by higher than ever prices for the iPhone X / XS / XS Max, as well as a small number of differences between the XS line and X. However, iOS devices were present in the network in January 2019 even more than in a year previously:

  • 01.2013 – 25,86%
  • 01.2014 – 23,52%
  • 01.2015 – 22,75%
  • 01.2016 – 19,58%
  • 01.2017 – 19,73%
  • 01.2018 – 19,64%
  • 01.2019 – 22,85%

The main "culprit" of this strengthening, according to the research company CIRP, was the iPhone XR. This model proved to be extremely successful at least in its homeland of the United States already during the Christmas season. According to CIRP, the new product at the end of 2018 started stronger than the iPhone X and iPhone 8 Plus combined in the same period of 2017.

iPhone XR, despite all the criticism, did its job, managing to save Apple from a significant quantitative decrease in sales

The iPhone XR is a very compromise solution. There is no second camera, but instead of AMOLED, there is a regular IPS screen, and even with a lower resolution. The XR doesn't have 3DTouch, the bezels are bigger, and the body uses simpler materials.

On the other hand, the XR outperforms the much-desired iPhone X in many ways. The XR has a similar design, but a more powerful processor, a better main camera, a larger screen, and better time. battery life. But most importantly: the iPhone XR is at least a quarter cheaper. As a result, it was this device that helped the "apple" company to refrain from a strong decline in sales.

The larger and more expensive iPhone XS Max turned out to be of interest not to everyone, and the base XS brought not so many innovations against the backdrop of the iPhone X

2019 is being linked with the resurrection of the iPhone SE, the most affordable of all iPhones. Apple allegedly returned to plans to release the second version of this gadget. After all, the same XR, albeit cheaper than X / XS, is not a particularly affordable device either.

As for the future main iPhones, whose names no one knows yet, verified insiders attribute the following features to them:

  • Updated design with a reduced neckline-monobrow on top (according to other sources, the size of the monobrow will remain the same);
  • Third chamber. Her purpose is still unknown. Most likely, this is a module with a wide-angle lens or a ToF stereo camera;
  • Improved optical zoom(three times instead of the current two times);
  • New front camera- 12 MPx instead of the previous 7 MPx, slow motion (Slow-mo) video recording;
  • More flash memory: 128 GB in the minimum configuration against the current 64 GB;

Looking at several sources at once, we can say that this, alas, is the most likely design of the rear panel so far. new iPhones 2019. Fortunately, there is still hope for alternative versions

  • New version of Taptic Engine- a special vibration motor responsible for 3DTouch, which takes into account the force of pressing the display and tactile response (however, according to other sources, Apple in the new iPhones, on the contrary, intends to abandon the Taptic Engine and 3DTouch, respectively;
  • New technology for indoor navigation;
  • Touch ID will return, will become an addition to Face ID and will be integrated into the display;
  • More powerful batteries (+20-25%);
  • fast charging and a much more powerful charger included (18 watts versus the current 5);
  • accelerated wireless charger ;
  • Reverse wireless charging(charging other gadgets, including AirPods);
  • Accelerated LTE modem(+20-40% to the current limit of 1 Gb / s);
  • WiFi 6 support(Wi-Fi ax): higher performance, lower power consumption;
  • Pencil Support. Apple's signature stylus can finally work with the iPhone.

The network has a lot of concepts of how the future iPhone could look like. However, this one is made by the reputable western publication PhoneArena and is based on data from an insider they trust.

Of course, the above is not a complete list of expected innovations and there will certainly be something else. The presentation of new products will traditionally take place in September.

The second generation iPhone XR, in turn, will be presented at the same time. The gadget expects a second camera on the back, a new front camera, a new processor, Wi-Fi 6 support, an accelerated LTE modem and an increase in RAM from 3 to 4 GB.

3rd place: Xiaomi is the fastest growing Chinese brand in the smartphone market in 2019

In third place, having minimally displaced another Chinese company - Huawei, Xiaomi suddenly breaks out. Xiaomi's growth rate is impressive in a good way. Back in 2013, StatCounter estimated the share of this smartphone manufacturer at a ridiculous five hundredths of a percent. In 2019, we have the third largest manufacturer in the ranking with a result of 7.88% at the beginning of the year.

  • 01.2013 – 0,05%
  • 01.2014 – 0,07%
  • 01.2015 – 0,52%
  • 01.2016 – 0,75%
  • 01.2017 – 2,16%
  • 01.2018 – 4,85%
  • 01.2019 – 7,88%

Last year for Xiaomi turned out to be very bright. The company successfully developed new markets, opened hundreds of retail stores all over the planet. Also, the Chinese released a lot of different electronics under their own brand, including the incredibly popular smart bracelet Mi Band 3 (in 2019, the innovations of the bracelet were already presented).

Redmi Note 7 is apparently the most massive Xiaomi smartphone this year. A large screen with a minimal notch, 48 MPx in the main camera and unusual Snapdragon 660 smartphones at an affordable price will clearly make the new product a bestseller.

Of course, the main thing for Xiaomi is smartphones. In 2018, Xiaomi distinguished itself with the flagships Mi 8, M8 Pro, Mix 2S and Mix 3. Redmi 6, 6A and S2 joined the army of budget gadgets. The “middle” was filled by Redmi Note 5, Mi A2 and A2 Lite, Mi 8 Lite and Mi Max 3. Also in 2018, two completely new lines with powerful processors for a reasonable price were launched: Poco (PocoPhone) and Black Shark.

If you are completely confused in the variety of smartphones of this Chinese brand, then here is our full one.

Xiaomi started 2019 very cheerfully. At the moment, the company has already managed to present:

  • Redmi Go– for the first time for Xiaomi, the release of an ultra-budget smartphone on Adnroid Go;
  • Redmi 7A- most affordable smartphone Xiaomi on full Android. Compared to 6A, there is now an octa-core processor inside and a larger battery;
  • Redmi 7- the novelty is equipped with a large 6.2 '' display with minimal frames, a new Snapdragon 632 processor and a 4000 mAh battery (versus 5.5 "", weak Mediatek and 3000 mAh in Redmi 6);
  • - impress with powerful Snapdragon 660/675 processors and a main camera module with a resolution of 48 MPx. Note 7 Pro will not officially be in Russia: it is exclusive to China and India. But the base Redmi Note 7 has already started selling in the Russian Federation in the spring;
  • Mi 9- Xiaomi's key flagship for 2019. The Snapdragon 855 is armed with an in-display fingerprint scanner and a triple camera with a resolution of 48 MPx for the main module. And also the fastest wireless charging in the world at the time of the announcement (20 watts);

Xiaomi Mi 9, with largely ultimate characteristics, is strikingly cheaper than other flagships

  • Mi 9 SE- a simplified version of the flagship Mi 9. There is a slightly smaller display, Snapdragon 712 instead of 855 and no wireless charging. But there was a scanner on the screen, a triple camera, including a 48 MPx module and a price tag one and a half times less than on Mi 9;
  • Mi 9T- the latest news. Equipped with a pop-up front camera and an almost frameless display. Original body color. Inside the Snapdragon 730 and the camera, as in the Mi 9 SE. Here we are, which are now sold for about the same price;
  • Mi 9T Pro- compared to Mi 9, it is strengthened with a Snapdragon 855 processor instead of 730, as well as faster charging by 27 watts instead of 18;
  • Xiaomi Black Shark 2- a new generation of Xiaomi smartphone sharpened for games. Inside the Snapdragon 855 and an advanced cooling system. The display adjusts to the lighting and is pressure sensitive. There are stereo speakers that have not found a place in all versions of Mi 9.

Xiaomi should also have plenty of other new products for 2019. Next up is the new PocoPhone F2, the pure Android Mi A3 (Android One) without its own MIUI shell, and the huge Mi Max 4 phablet.

Among other things, the company's first foldable smartphone looks especially bright, the prototype of which is captured in the video below. It is noteworthy that the Chinese company Visionox also makes flexible displays for such a smartphone. Alas, there is no exact information on the details and especially the timing of the sale.

This short official video is not in the best quality so far, unfortunately, everything that is known about the Xiaomi folding smartphone

4th place: Huawei - a bet on cameras and technologies

Fourth place at the beginning of 2019 belongs to Huawei. The ban on sales in the United States and all kinds of pressure that is being exerted on the company have not yet become too strong a blow for Huawei. On the contrary, their market share is growing, and the head of the company in the next two years promises even without the US market to bring it to second place in the world in smartphone sales, pushing Apple aside.

The figures below take into account both Huawei itself and its Honor brand:

  • 01.2013 – 0,85%
  • 01.2014 – 0,95%
  • 01.2015 – 1,57%
  • 01.2016 – 2,59%
  • 01.2017 – 3,78%
  • 01.2018 – 5,26%
  • 01.2019 – 7,87%

Honor's contribution to the overall statistics is definitely high: the brand's devices are sold in huge batches. It is noteworthy that the Honor View 20 (pictured) received a screen with a dot-cut for the front camera and a ToF camera before the usual Huawei flagships.

Despite a number of budget and mid-range devices that have become bestsellers, Huawei's flagships are still the brightest.

  • came out in the first half of 2018 and set the trend for triple cameras, a huge resolution of the main module of 40 MPx, and also surprised with the excellent quality of images in low light;
  • became the flagship for the second half of 2018. The device switched to the most powerful Kirin 980, acquired an ultra-wide-angle module for shooting, an on-screen scanner, as well as the fastest wired (40 watt) charging. Moreover, it was the Mate 20 Pro that set the tone for wireless reverse charging, i.e. the ability to recharge other devices;
  • launched in the spring of 2019. The novelty is the first in the world to use an RYYB sensor (40 MPx) with tremendous light sensitivity. The P30 Pro is also the first smartphone with 5x optical zoom (50x digital zoom). Finally, the new ToF camera gives it a great bokeh effect and improves the augmented reality experience.

P30 Pro with quad and P30 with triple camera. Main module - 40 MPx

Huawei seems to show that Chinese manufacturers not only quickly follow trends, but are already creating these trends, being one step ahead.

As you saw above, Huawei's market position has also grown significantly over the year. And although Xiaomi turned out to be symbolically higher in terms of quantity, it was Huawei that could gain more in terms of money. The reason is that, unlike Xiaomi, prices for key flagships from Huawei are significantly higher.

By the way, we note that for the second year in a row, Huawei flagships are leading in the ranking of a very well-known DxOMark resource, which tests cameras, as a rule, of the most advanced smartphones.

The confrontation between Huawei and Samsung for the title of leader in mobile photography pushed Apple into the background

To date, the trio of P30 Pro, Mate 20 Pro and P20 Pro are in key positions in the rankings, competing with Samsung solutions. iPhone XS Max - the most relevant and expensive Apple smartphone got only seventh place.

At the end of May, Huawei, just in the midst of the events associated with US sanctions, despite everything, announced the Honor 20 Pro. These models offer the powerful Kirin 980 and advanced cameras at the most affordable price that has always distinguished the Honor line.

The announcement of a trio of Nova 5 smartphones is scheduled for early summer. They will also have impressive cameras, but the most striking feature is complete framelessness and the absence of cutouts in the screen due to the front camera leaving. In turn, in mid-autumn, the presentation of Mate 30, Huawei's new ultimate flagships, will take place.

We also note that sales of a unique flexible Huawei smartphone The Mate X, whose presentation, admittedly, largely overshadowed the Galaxy Fold. However, the price tag of ~$2500, alas, will scare away the majority of buyers for now. Understanding this, Huawei itself claims that such high prices for flexible smartphones will not last long.

5th place: Oppo is an ambitious Chinese manufacturer

Another Chinese brand, Oppo, moved from sixth to fifth place in the ranking for the year by the beginning of 2019. This is another vivid example of how powerful Chinese smartphone manufacturers are gradually crowding out everyone else. This time, LG was not lucky, which moved to the sixth position, but more on that later.

In turn, Oppo did not notice the StatCounter analytics service at all a few years ago, so here the calculation starts only from 2016:

  • 01.2016 – 0,47%
  • 01.2017 – 1,9%
  • 01.2018 – 3,45%
  • 01.2019 – 4,49%

According to Counterpoint, Oppo is one of those Chinese brands that are actively involved in ousting Apple and Samsung from the most valuable segment - expensive, premium smartphones. Over the past year, Oppo for the first time managed to occupy 6% in it against only 1% a year earlier.

Oppo's shock growth has slowed down somewhat, but nevertheless, the company is still confidently moving forward. Unlike Xiaomi and Huawei, Oppo is in no rush to enter Western markets and mostly sticks to its native China and countries close to it, including India.

Let us clarify that Oppo, although formally an independent company, is more similar in structure to the Honor brand within Huawei. The fact is that Oppo, Vivo and OnePlus belong to the Chinese corporation BBK Electronics. Vivo and OnePlus in January 2019 owned another 0.6 and 0.5% of the market, respectively. However, the main asset of BBK Electronics is precisely Oppo.

The company's current flagship, the Oppo Reno, surprises not only with its impressive camera specs (48 MPx + 8 MPx ultra-wide angle + 13 MPx for 10x hybrid zoom), but also the fact that they hardly protrude from the body

At home, Oppo is a very powerful competitor to Xiaomi and Huawei, often pushing them to lower lines in various sales ratings. In terms of technology, the company definitely has something to “fight” with competitors.

For example, last year's RX17 Pro pleased with the latest generation of an optical on-screen fingerprint scanner built into the display, more nimble and accurate than its competitors. The proprietary SuperVOOC Flash Charge with a power of 50 watts is the absolute leader in the market in terms of speed. In addition, in 2018, Oppo became the first to use time-of-flight cameras (TOF 3D stereo cameras).

The company was one of the first to switch to protective Gorilla glass Glass of the sixth generation. Instantly adopted Oppo from Samsung and a chip with a camera that adjusts the aperture to the level of lighting. In turn, it was the flagship Oppo Find X that set the fashion for frameless sliders of the new generation in 2018, which was later supported by Mi Mix 3 and Honor Magic 2.

Like Find X, Oppo Reno does not have any cutouts or holes in the screen. However, this is no longer a slider, instead of a moving rear part, another solution has been applied here with a retractable front camera.

Oppo has also prepared a lot of surprises for this year. For example, in the latest flagships Oppo Reno expects a fivefold optical zoom. Only the Huawei P30 Pro is capable of this today. However, Oppo will have a higher resolution of such a telephoto lens: 13 MPx versus 8 MPx for Huawei.

Oppo also decided to adopt from its Vivo allies a feature with a retractable front camera, which allows you to make completely frameless displays without any cutouts. Oppo has already implemented a similar "chip" in the F11 Pro and Reno. It looks like this is just the beginning.

For Reno, a younger version is also provided with a simpler processor and only two main cameras. However, the retractable front camera unit (pictured) is also present here.

6th place: LG - a well-known Korean brand that can hardly withstand the onslaught of opponents

If you follow the StatCounter data exactly, then LG fell not even to sixth, but to seventh place over the year. However, specifically in our ranking of smartphone manufacturers, we decided to leave LG in sixth place, and skip Mobicel, whose devices generate about 3% of mobile traffic.

The fact is that Mobicel sells smart devices mainly in African countries and a very significant part of these gadgets are advanced phones, not smart phones. Android control. So in our slightly adjusted version of the ranking, LG remains in sixth position. Alas, this does not change the fact that she is doing poorly in the mobile market:

  • 01.2013 – 2,79%
  • 01.2014 – 2,99%
  • 01.2015 – 4,01%
  • 01.2016 – 4,28%
  • 01.2017 – 3,87%
  • 01.2018 – 3,48%
  • 01.2019 – 2,78%

Under the onslaught of Chinese rivals and another Korean company - Samsung, LG's market share is melting for the third year. The mobile division of LG has shown losses for 15 (!) quarters in a row. From some of the least profitable countries for themselves, LG Mobile decided to leave.

The announcement video of the LG G8 clearly shows key features one of LG's flagship smartphones this year

However, there is no need to worry about the company yet. Fortunately, smartphones are not the main division and not the main source of income for LG. Surprisingly, the overall financial performance of Koreans is in a significant plus.

As for smartphones specifically, the company is not going to show a white flag and close the mobile division despite the problems. The latter was recently directly confirmed by the head of LG.

LG flagships are still bright solutions. It was they who set the fashion for ultra-wide-angle camera lenses, which received a second wind in 2019, a few years ago in the LG G5. In addition, LG G and LG V series devices are notable for many features related to sound, AI, as well as original creative features such as creating cinemagraphs.

LG G8 turned out to be the only flagship that, instead of a teardrop notch, a hole or a retractable camera, uses a unibrow a la iPhone, albeit a smaller one. In addition, in some markets, the G8 received only 2 rear cameras instead of 3

The presentation of the flagships of LG 2019 came out a little crumpled, as the company decided to present the LG G8, LG G8s and LG V50 on the same day. And there is no clear hierarchy between them, who is more powerful and who is weaker. All three are based on the most powerful Snapdragon 855. The LG V50 is notable primarily for its support for 5G networks.

In turn, the G8 and G8s, among other things, are curious about the ToF camera in addition to the usual front one on the front panel. The ToF camera there opens up possibilities for controlling the smartphone using gestures. Other manufacturers have tried to implement this before, but with the new unusual camera, LG's gesture control can turn out to be really convenient.

7th and 8th place: Motorola and Lenovo - an American brand run by the Chinese

In 2014, Chinese giant Lenovo acquired the entire mobile division of Motorola. At the same time, the company continued to produce smartphones both under its own brand and under the Motorola brand. By 2019, an interesting situation has developed here.

Being a part of Lenovo, Motorola Mobility as a whole takes a hit in Western markets and turns out to be in a small plus for the year:

  • 01.2013 – 1,81%
  • 01.2014 – 0,89%
  • 01.2015 – 2,28%
  • 01.2016 – 2,18%
  • 01.2017 – 2,12%
  • 01.2018 – 2,64%
  • 01.2019 – 2,72%

Recognizable brand / nostalgia, corporate design and features, successfully implemented plug-in concept and more are slowly moving sales forward. Brand smartphones are still in some demand in the United States, and they were able to achieve real success in Latin America. There, Motorola is often ahead only of Samsung.

The first new Motorola in 2019

In 2019, Motorola has already managed to introduce four new smartphones in the basic and mid-range segments: the G7, G7 Plus, G7 Power and G7 Play models. The first two with a teardrop notch in the screen, the second pair with a unibrow. However, the brand has yet to announce this year's flagships with impressive specifications.

But Lenovo in the direction of smartphones is doing so-so. In the west, the company did not particularly manage to gain a foothold, and in its native China, other manufacturers are far more successful so far. As a result, the already modest share of Lenovo falls.

  • 01.2013 – 0,14%
  • 01.2014 – 0,36%
  • 01.2015 – 0,93%
  • 01.2016 – 2%
  • 01.2017 – 2,92%
  • 01.2018 – 2,87%
  • 01.2019 – 1,77%

Last year, the company began to make active attempts to turn the tide. The announcement of the frameless slider Lenovo Z5 Pro looked especially bright at the end of last year. Priced at a fraction of the price of its main competitor, the Mi Mix 3, Lenovo's device has an in-display fingerprint scanner. V Xiaomi smartphone there was none.

Lenovo Z6 Pro is the brand's key smartphone for at least the first half of 2019. There are 4 cameras on the back, including a 48 MPx main module. In Russia it was presented only in August under the name Lenovo ZP

At the beginning of this year, the Lenovo Z5 Pro GT was released, which became one of the very first gadgets with Snapdragon 855.

And in the spring, the company introduced the ultimate Lenovo Z6 Pro, which surprises, first of all, with cameras. There are four of them on the back. It is possible to glue pictures into a picture with a colossal resolution, to shoot from two cameras at the same time. Moreover, the fourth camera is ToF (time of flight). In the Z6 Pro, it is sharpened specifically for shooting video, and it also helps with focusing.

9th place: Nokia - a former legend

The statistics for the Finnish company Nokia are perhaps the most dizzying on our list. It reflects the company's colossal decline ever since a significant portion of the traffic on the network was generated by devices based on its own operating systems. The fall was also when the manufacturer, being in the alliance, and then part of Microsoft, released devices with Windows Phone.

  • 01.2013 – 22,15%
  • 01.2014 – 18,42%
  • 01.2015 – 11,24%
  • 01.2016 – 7,43%
  • 01.2017 – 3,41%
  • 01.2018 – 2,04%
  • 01.2019 – 1,16%

Today, the Nokia brand is owned by the Finnish group HMD Global, which consists largely of former Nokia employees. However, now the company no longer has any of its own operating systems, instead there is a fairly wide range of devices for different price segments running pure Android (Android One), i.e. even without any branded shells.

Unable to withstand the price war with Korean and Chinese companies, the Finns, according to StatCounter, continue to fall. To remedy the situation, the company is trying to expand the range of truly unique models. So, at the beginning of 2019, the Nokia 9 PureView smartphone was launched.

In some sources, you can find information that in addition to five cameras, Nokia 9 also has a ToF stereo camera. This is mistake. There is no ToF in Nokia 9, and the dark seventh hole (sixth for flash) is simply empty

The gadget is equipped with an unusual rear camera system of two color and three black-and-white modules (all 12 MPx), which, working together, should improve many aspects of photo quality. In addition, the device has a 6 '' AMOLED screen, last year's flagship Snapdragon 845 processor and an in-display fingerprint scanner.

The first tests of such an unusual camera show conflicting results, but Nokia has already begun releasing software updates for the device, which may well improve shooting results due to updated algorithms. In addition, the idea of a five-chamber module can be developed in the following models.

Ranking results and smaller manufacturers (brands)

StatCounter most clearly shows the entire top smartphone manufacturers presented above as follows:

The balance of power among key smartphone manufacturers

Let's clarify two important points. Unknown, which occupies 4.43% as of January 2019, means everything that the service captures, but cannot be attributed to any brand. Most likely, these are various small Chinese companies and their devices that are produced for operators and sales networks in different countries.

A more detailed picture of StatCounter data for recent years, including those companies that are classified in the Other section, looks like this:

This is how the list of manufacturers has changed over the past five years

Based on these data, we can additionally observe the decline of Indian manufacturers, led by Micromax, who could not stand the confrontation with Chinese and Korean competitors. The same applies to the Taiwanese HTC, which is doing very badly, and the company has already sold part of the business to Google. No luck and another Taiwanese company - Asus.

Of those who, on the contrary, are gradually strengthening, we note Google with their Pixel line. As well as the Chinese OnePlus with their branded "flagship killers". Smartphones of both companies generated at the beginning of January 2019 0.5% of all global traffic from smartphones running Android and iOS.

Note that some of the points in the detailed study of the lists above here may also seem very strange. For example, traffic from Sony smartphones For some reason, StatCounter still divides it into Sony and Sony Ericsson. Although the smartphones of the last brand have sunk into oblivion for too long, and, apparently, the two indicators should simply be summed up.

That's all we have. We will try to update this material. new information and links to current news.

If the phone sells well, then most often it means that it is cool. Frank slag will not be sold, as its main "jambs" will come out on the forums and in the recall in the first weeks of purchase. Next is a selection of the best-selling smartphones over the past 2 months. The review is based on Yandex.Market data.

1st place - Xiaomi Redmi 6A

The smartphone breaks sales records - 10,455 units were sold in 2 months according to Yandex.Market. This is the best state employee in its segment, which can be taken for 6200-6500 rubles on average, and on Tmall - in general for 5700 rubles.

Redmi 6A is a high-quality dialer phone with a compact 5.45-inch HD screen and a 13 MP camera. Inside, there is a MediaTek Helio A22 processor and a 3000 mAh battery, which gives 2-3 days of work in moderate use mode. The device is taken primarily for calls, but it will also play HD videos on YouTube without any problems and even play weak games.

As for the shortcomings, first of all it is a quiet sound and a lack of memory. If you take a phone with 16 GB of memory, then be prepared that more than half of the disk will go under the software. However, for 6000 rubles this is the best solution on the market, which explains the growth in the number of sales on the market.

2nd place - iPhone 6S

Over the past 2 months, 7798 people have bought this model. This is strange, considering that the smartphone was released in 2015. With the advent of the new flagship iPhone XS, XS Max, XR, the older iPhone 6S fell in price, which is what people use. It can be taken on average for 20 thousand rubles.

The model is old, but still updated, runs on a 14-nm Apple A9 processor and is equipped with IPS screen diagonal 4.7 inches. The obvious plus is the size. The smartphone is compact, and compared to the huge trendy "shovels" looks in the black.

The device photographs well - many "state employees" of 2019 issue the worst quality. Plus, it shoots video in 4K, is equipped with an NFC chip and is generally of high quality on all fronts. The only disappointment is the 1715 mAh battery and the lack of fast charging. Almost all smartphones in 2019 up to 20 thousand rubles come with fast charging, and their batteries are better.

3rd place - Samsung Galaxy S8

5180 people - that's how many people have purchased this flagship over the past two months. They can be understood - the phone is very cool. In terms of price / quality ratio, it is even better than the new Samsung S9 and even more so S10.

The Samsung Galaxy S8 came out in 2017, but even by today's standards, it's cool and better than many 2018-2019 flagships that sell for a lot of money. By the way, I got 1st place in the apparatus, and quite deservedly so.

The smartphone is equipped with an IP68 waterproof housing, the world's best OLED screen in 2017-2018 according to DisplayMate. Inside is a powerful 10nm Exynos 8895 processor, which is guaranteed to pull everything, including games. The camera is also good, with a resolution of 12 megapixels, f / 1.7 aperture optics and optical stabilization.

Fast and wireless charging, solid autonomy, NFC included. Even 2 years after the release, the phone is selling well and getting positive reviews which explains its popularity in the market.

4th place - Redmi Note 7

The number of sales for the last 2 months is 5230 units. The phone will cost an average of 14k rubles, this is a “fresh” model on the market, which is mainly bought on Aliexpress. This means that the actual sales figure in recent months is much higher.

Redmi Note 7 has a new 48MP camera with Quad-Bayer filter, cool IPS screen with Full HD+ resolution and accurate colors, good average Snapdragon processor 660, 4000 mAh battery + QC 4.0 fast charging. The phone takes excellent photos during the day, can withstand 32.5 hours of communication and more than 14 hours of video playback at a brightness of 200 cd/m2. You will find a detailed review of the phone.

And while it's arguably the best smartphone on the market under $14,000, it doesn't have an NFC chip or 4K video capture, and it does come with a QC 3.0-compatible charger. By the way, it was Redmi Note 7 that took 1st place.

5th place - Apple iPhone X

The number of sales for the last 2 months is 4907 units. With the release of the iPhone XS, XS Max and XR, the usual “ten” has fallen in price and is now available for an average of 62-64 thousand rubles.

The smartphone is made in a glass case with IP67 water protection, equipped with a 5.8-inch OLED screen with a resolution of 1125 × 2436 with support for Dolby Vision and HDR10, 120 Hz refresh rate. It is worth noting that there is a risk of pixel burn-in on the iPhone X matrix. Here is the proof:

In terms of cameras, the phone is good - it produces cool shots. Also here is a powerful Apple processor A11 Bionic, which will pull everything and has a solid margin for the future. Wireless and fast charging is supported, there is a 4K video shooting function and Face ID technology.

Subjective opinion: there is no point in buying this model now, since the price of 60+ thousand rubles is clearly too high. For the same money, there are better phones, so you should not take the iPhone X in the middle of 2019.

6-10 places

Also, according to "Yandex.Market" Chinese "middle peasants" sold well:

  • Xiaomi Mi 8 Lite – 4528 sales
  • Huawei P20 Lite – 4042 sales

surprised new phone South Korean brand Samsung Galaxy A50 is a new phone with an Amoled screen, a 10nm Samsung Exynos 9610 processor and a 3-module camera with a regular, wide-angle lens and a depth sensor. Plus, the device received a large battery, a fingerprint scanner under the screen, and even face scanning technology. See link for details. And although this is a novelty that has just entered the market, 3,330 people managed to buy it, and this is only according to Yandex.Market.

Samsung Galaxy A50

HUAWEI P Smart (2019) is a confident mid-range smartphone powered by the new Kirin 710 processor. It has a good IPS screen, cool design, and a 3400 mAh battery. Moreover, the average price is 15,700 rubles, and as a gift, the Chinese brand gives a cool fitness bracelet. Number of sales - 3332 units; detailed overview phone .

- a real flagship with the best screen on the market, a cool camera and a 10nm Exynos 9810 processor, water protection, wireless charging and other flagship chips are here - the phone is expensive and available for an average of 42-45 thousand rubles, but this does not stop buyers - over the past 2 months, 3076 units were sold according to Yandex.Market.

Every fifth smartphone in MTS retail in Q2 2017 was sold on credit, follows from the materials of the operator. Moreover, the average cost of credit smartphones is growing: over the year it increased by 22% and reached 18,500 rubles. - and the average check for a smartphone in MTS is 10,500 rubles.

Now MTS sells on credit 60% of smartphones more expensive than 40,000 rubles. - a year earlier, the share of credit machines in this category was 32%, according to the representative of the company Dmitry Solodovnikov. MTS does not disclose the absolute sales of smartphones in its retail and their dynamics. According to Solodovnikov, Samsung, Apple and Huawei are most actively bought on credit at MTS: in the second quarter of 2017, 31, 44 and 17% of the devices of these brands were sold on credit in the operator's retail. A year earlier, 23% of Samsung smartphones were sold on credit, 11% - Apple, 9% - Huawei.

In the second quarter of 2017, credit sales of smartphones grew in Svyaznoy both in units and in percentage terms - in particular, sales of smartphones more expensive than 40,000 rubles. increased year-on-year by 2.5 times, says the representative of the retailer Sergei Tikhonov.

According to MTS, in the second quarter of 2017, a total of 6.2 million smartphones were sold in Russia, which is 12% more than a year earlier. In money terms, the market grew by 16% - turnover of 80 billion rubles. In July 2017, a little over 3 million smartphones were sold in Russia, follows from the material of a partner of several electronics manufacturers. The first place in total sales in pieces was occupied by Samsung (25.3% of the market), the second - by Apple (13%), the third - by Huawei (10.4%).

A similar picture is observed in all Russian retail, says Eldar Murtazin, a leading analyst at Mobile Research Group. According to him, in mid-2017, about 40% of smartphones were bought on credit; a year earlier, their share was about 26%. About 70% of devices more expensive than 30,000 rubles are sold on credit. – a year earlier, their share was twice as low.

According to Maria Shalina, director of telecommunications and financial services at Euroset, 35-40% of Russians buy smartphones on credit. The average price of smartphones sold on credit at Euroset increased by 18% in the second quarter of 2017 compared to the same period last year, she reports.

The growth of credit purchases stimulates the availability and variety of installment programs and credit programs, continues Murtazin. In a crisis, people prefer not to spend all the money at once, but to give equal shares every month, he believes.

Installment program for two years without additional encumbrances in the form of purchasing insurance and additional services, launched in Eldorado in mid-June, increased sales of smartphones by more than 50% in monetary terms, says its representative Yulia Zavyalova.

Among the reasons for the popularity of credit products when purchasing a smartphone, we can single out the desire of buyers to distribute the costs for a long period, an increase in the number of partners providing installment plans in stores, an increase in the supply of loan products, as well as the popularity of loans for long periods and installments, lists Tikhonov.

It also affects the fact that people began to buy smartphones with a long service life, and these are again relatively expensive devices, adds Murtazin. This leads to the fact that the cycle of replacing old smartphones with new ones in Russia is lengthening. If in 2015 it was 13 months, then in 2016 it is already 18 months, and in 2017 it may reach 20 months, he predicts.

IDC released its quarterly report on the state of the smartphone market for April-June this year. Edition Instant Flash News has redesigned it into a large series of charts and graphs that reflect the state of affairs in the global smartphone market in a variety of ways. We will show you all these graphs and comment on each of them, highlighting some interesting details. Let's start with the most important graph showing the change in the share and growth rate of the main cell phone manufacturers.

Yes, please note that this slide applies not only to smartphones, but also to simple push-button phones. Total sales decreased slightly compared to last year (470 million vs. 473 million). Samsung, Apple and Huawei remain the leaders, but the unknown company Transsion is in fourth place, showing growth of more than 50% for five quarters in a row. We will talk about it more below. Only Xiaomi showed a similar growth rate in the second quarter. HMD (formerly Microsoft Mobile) got out of a long hole, showing growth in sales for the first time in more than two years. He provided her with the ninth place in the market, the Finno-Chinese overtook even Lenovo. But LG's sales fell, as did the "Others" category.

Now we will exclude push-button phones from the statistics and we will see slightly different statistics. Smartphone sales are slowly growing (348 million vs. 346 million a year earlier). Many names in the top 10 are the same, but HMD is not on this list. It can be concluded that its ninth place is provided mainly by push-button telephones. From there, the fourth place is taken by the mysterious Transsion, whose share in smartphones is insignificant (although it is growing steadily, the company even overtook Gionee and entered the top 10 for the first time). The rapid offensive of OPPO and Vivo, which was observed throughout the past year, has stalled a bit, although the growth rate of BBK has remained strong. ZTE almost managed to overcome the decline in sales, while LG, on the contrary, began again. Note also the low share of Others: brands outside the top 10 control less than a quarter of the market.

The least interesting picture: a breakdown of smartphone sales by region. Expectedly, the largest sales are in Asia, where they have been growing steadily for several years, but have now begun to decline slightly. However, in Western Europe and Africa (+ the Middle East), they are declining even faster. The growth driver is North America.

Now about which brands are popular in which regions. Samsung controls about a third of the market in five of the six identified regions, with the exception of the highly competitive Asian market, where five companies have shares ranging from 11% to 15%. The same picture shows us the source of Transsion's rapid growth: the company sells one in six smartphones in the African-Middle East region, and mostly in Africa (Tecno and itel brands). The company's Asian brands (Infinix and Spice) have not been as successful so far. We cannot fail to note the success of the French company Wiko and the Pakistani Q-Mobile, which managed to break into the top 5 of their regions. In addition, Xiaomi's growth in Central and Eastern Europe is impressive: the company's sales grew by 1629.3% in a year, and now the company is second only to Samsung, Huawei and Apple.

Now look at the market of two countries with a billion people: China and India. Despite a roughly equal population, China is four times ahead of its southwestern neighbor in smartphone sales. However, the Indian market continues to grow, while the Chinese market has begun to decline. In China, home-based companies are particularly at ease, claiming eight spots in the top 10. Leading in the world as a whole and in India, Samsung takes eighth place here, even behind Meizu and Gionee (the fact that Gionee overtakes Meizu may seem especially surprising to our readers). As for India, Vivo and OPPO are actively advancing there, creating problems for local players (note the sharp drop in Micromax) and Transsion (its Spice brand operates in India).

Another interesting picture: a breakdown into price categories in increments of $50. The left slide proves that half of the smartphones sold are under $200 and 80% are under $400. At the same time, the $700+ category in terms of sales is almost equal to the $450-$700 segment. The graph on the right shows that the more expensive smartphones are, the less often buyers choose brands not from the top 5 (Others is the lightest color). There are also many amazing details. So, Transsion somehow became the world leader in the sub-$50 segment, which completes its image of a company that makes money by selling pushbuttons to the poor in Africa. Samsung was the only company represented in all categories above $50, while it is the leader in the most massive segment ($50-$300). The strength of Xiaomi turned out to be in budgets (who would doubt it): Redmi allowed the brand to take second place in the $100-$150 segment. Apple reigns supreme in $550+, but in $450-550 Huawei is the leader, less successful in any other categories. In some fantastic way, Fujitsu, which operates only in Japan and has big financial problems, got into the top 5 in the $500-$550 category, while Sony entered the top three in the top price level. Note, by the way, that Lenovo and ZTE appear in the ranking only a couple of times, while TCL (Alcatel) only sells very cheap devices well.

Well, the last picture: what price ranges form the basis of sales of large brands. The only company whose sales base is flagships is expectedly Apple. Samsung has all the categories; Vivo turned out to be a budget alternative to OPPO (it used to be the other way around); Xiaomi showed almost no sales above $200, as did ZTE with Transsion. LG is also focusing on budget devices, sales of models over $300 are low. What interesting trends recorded in these charts have we missed? Share your observations in the comments.

In the total number of smartphones sold in Russia, domestic developments account for less than 10%. Russian developments are inferior to competitors from China, who take in quantity and scale. The latter account for more than 30% of the market

In the nine months of 2017, 1.7 million smartphones under "Russian" brands were sold in Russia in the amount of 6.8 billion rubles, according to the report of the Svyaznoy retail chain (available to RBC). We are talking about smartphones designed in Russia, but assembled in Southeast Asia.

In total, according to Svyaznoy, 20.4 million smartphones worth 257.5 billion rubles were sold in Russia in the first nine months. Thus, Russian brands accounted for 8.3% of the market in unit terms and 2.6% in monetary terms. Following the results of nine months of 2016, the share of these devices was 6.4 and 2.9% of the market, respectively. The decrease in the share of the smartphone market was not due to a drop in the revenue of Russian developers, but due to lower growth rates of the indicator compared to the entire market.

The top five most popular Russian smartphone brands for the first nine months of 2017 included Digma, DEXP, Vertex, Highscreen and Oysters, a Svyaznoy representative said. The Russian ones also include Texet, Irbis, 4GOOD, Stark, Ginzzu and a number of others, whose sales can amount to thousands of devices per year.

Sales Russian smartphones began to recover after a fall a few years ago, associated with a surge in the popularity of devices from Chinese manufacturers, which are actively developing in budget price segments. In particular, in 2014, Russian brands in units accounted for 9.7% of the market, in 2015 - 8.2%, and in 2016 - 7%. At the same time, the share of Chinese brands in unit terms increased from 19.4% in 2014 to 34% in the first nine months of 2017, and in money terms - from 14.3 to 25%.

According to the forecast of Sergey Tikhonov, the representative of Svyaznoy, the share of Russian brands in the smartphone segment will gradually increase in the next two years due to the growing demand for devices of individual brands that are presented in large retail chains, as well as maintaining the popularity of budget smartphones in general. “The gadget of a domestic company is often chosen as the first smartphone or as a replacement for a push-button telephone. A Russian smartphone is inexpensive, it is functional and reliable for its price,” Tikhonov said.

Svyaznoy's statistics do not take into account smartphones developed in Russia and sold under the brands of mobile operators. Although devices under the Tele2 brand (it works under mobile operator"T2 RTK Holding"), according to the results of the second quarter, occupied in sales in Russia with a share of 4%, according to Counterpoint Research. T2 RTK Holding does not develop devices itself, for it, as well as for other operators, this is done by special companies, among which there are Russian players (devices are manufactured at factories in Southeast Asia). For example, the IT company Technoserv. Andrey Borodin, vice-president of Technoserv, told RBC that since 2014, when the company began producing branded devices by order of mobile operators, it has sold about 650-700 thousand smartphones. At the peak (the period is not specified. — RBC) this business segment brought the company about 1 billion rubles. revenue per year.

The representative of MTS, the largest network selling mobile devices, Dmitry Solodovnikov named Digma, DEXP and Highscreen among the leading Russian brands of smartphones. Together they account for 4.7% of the total number of smartphones sold in Russia in the first nine months of this year. How much other Russian brands occupy, MTS did not evaluate, referring to the fact that the share of each is too small, below 0.7%.

Denis Kuskov, CEO of the information and analytical agency Telecom Daily, notes that Chinese brands are different, among them there are quite strong ones: Huawei, Xiaomi, ZTE, OPPO. “They have a more correct approach to the use of components, the formation of a range of devices and their promotion. These are solid models with well-thought-out technologies. Our developers often lower the bar, believing that someone will buy the device anyway, ”says Kuskov.

According to Eldar Murtazin, a leading analyst at Mobile Research Group, Chinese brands win in quantity - there are several dozen of them. “These are companies of a size incomparable with domestic players. It is difficult to compete with them in terms of the size of investments, the cost of devices, and in this segment the one who offers the lowest price wins. In addition, in pursuit of quality, our companies often spend too much time developing a device; by the time it is released, it is already outdated,” says Murtazin.
