Hardware and software setup

Connecting the router via usb modem. Connecting peripherals to usb on a wifi router

AT this review we will talk about how to set up a router via an ADSL modem. There is only one method for connecting a router to a modem, namely, the WAN port of the first is connected to the network port of the second. At the same time, you can configure the modem and the connection in the router with two different ways. which will be discussed here.

Connection diagram (modem + router)

The figure shows the network cable connection option (recommended) that you need to use to access the Internet via a modem. There is another method when the WAN port of the router is not used at all. Then the modem must be configured as a router, and the "hardware" router is used as a switch (and at the same time as an access point). We do not consider this method.

Option 1 - modem in router mode

Transferring the modem to the "router" mode

If a computer was connected to the modem, the network card of which is configured for "auto" DNS and IP, then it is likely that the modem is already configured correctly (in the "router" mode). But the computer can be configured to PPPoE connection(with username and password). And then - most likely, the modem must be transferred to the required mode separately. Consider an example: how to switch the Intercross modem to the “router” mode. At the same time, it will have to configure the connection.

We will assume that now the modem is configured in the "bridge" mode, and not the "router". Entering its web interface may not work right away. In any case, we try to set a static IP address on the PC network card (for example, 192.168.1.2) and the main gateway equal to the router address. Then - we try to enter the web interface (for example, at the address 192.168.1.1). Needless to say, the modem is connected directly to the computer.

It is important to know that modems from different companies have different IP values (respectively, the network card must also be configured for a specific modem).

If the web interface could not be opened, you can run hard reset settings (a minute after turning on - press the reset button for 10-12 seconds). You need to try to enter the interface when the device has already booted up, that is, not immediately after turning it on.

After entering the modem's web interface (using the login and password admin), go to the "Advanced setup" -> "WAN" tab:

Connection settings tab

Here you need to remove all existing interfaces. Then, you can immediately click "Add".

Parameter setting order:

1. Fill in the VPI and VCI fields, click "Next":

2. Set the mode of operation - PPPoE, also, the encapsulation method (LLC or other)

3. Fill in the field with the subscriber's login and password:

Configuring the modem in the "router" mode

On the next tab- check the box NAT, Firewall, WAN Service

Press the "Save" button

At the last stage - click "Save / Reboot"

To enable IPTV, you can either check the IGMP checkbox (on tab number 4), or configure another interface, but in Bridging mode. In the latter case, other values of the VPI/VCI parameters are indicated. It all depends on the IPTV transmission protocol that the provider implements.

Setting up a router

A hardware router, if connected to a modem router, must be configured as follows:

Options local network router

Built-in DHCP server - must distribute addresses that do not overlap with the modem's local addresses. Example: modem address ends with 1.1. This means that the router network must operate in the 192.168.0.X range. (or 2.X and so on).

You need to change the local address of the router. In the D-Link interface, this is: "Network" -\u003e "Connections" -\u003e double-click on the "LAN" line, the "IP address" field. After changing the IP, restart the PC (to reconnect to the router).

It is important to know that the above setting is performed without connecting the router to the modem.

Then, configure the connection in the router:

Setting up the WAN port of the router

The protocol can be called "IPoE", "DHCP" or "Dynamic IP" (all this is the same thing). Be sure to include NAT, Firewall, and if IPTV is available, IGMP. Then, the changes made are saved.

When the router is configured, it can be connected to the modem. But this is done with the power adapter turned off. Successful setup!

Option 2 - modem in bridge mode

Switching the modem to Bridging mode

At first, the steps will be the same as when setting up the modem in the "router" mode. Go to GUI, go to the connection settings tab (click "Add", having previously removed unnecessary interfaces).

On the tab that opens, set the VPI/VCI parameters:

Setting connection options

Then - select the operating mode, but not "PPPoE", but "Bridging":

Configuring the modem in the "Bridge" mode

It remains only to click "Next", "Save" and then - "Save / Reboot".

Setting up a router (for option 2)

In this case, you do not need to change the local network settings in the router. We will only configure the connection (of course, "under PPPoE").

When performing this setting, do not specify the VPI / VCI parameters, the rest repeats the modem setting in the “PPPoE” mode:

Connection in the router "under PPPoE"

All additional parameters (MTU and others) - it is better not to change. You only need to enter a username and password:

Connection in the router "under PPPoE" (continued)

Also, you need to check for NAT and Firewall (and click Save). The result looks like this:

Interfaces in the router (local, WAN and PPPoE)

Happy routing!

How to connect the router to the modem correctly - shown here:

Greetings! Today's article is addressed to those who have home Internet works through telephone line via connections via ADSL modem. Many providers still work with this option, as a rule, they provide services not only for the Internet, but also for telephony or digital TV. The connection diagram is built a little differently, which means wifi setup through an ADSL modem router is different.

How to connect an ADSL modem to a wifi router?

Let's consider two possible schemes for setting up an ADSL modem and router using the Internet coming via ADSL technology. When an employee of the provider who connected the Internet left you, the scheme looks like this:

  1. The telephone cable is connected to a splitter (a tee that bifurcates the telephone cable plug).
  2. From it, one telephone wire goes to the city telephone itself, and the other to the ADSL modem.
  3. And from the modem, the network cable is already connected to the connector in the computer.

The first way to distribute such Internet via wifi is to make one additional link in the form of a regular wifi router. We simply connect it to an ADSL modem and a computer network cable(from the modem to the WAN port, from the PC to the LAN), and this is how it turns out:

To create this structure, we can use two methods:

  1. For the modem to work in bridge mode (bridge), and the router - router (Router, RT) or access point (Access Point, AP). In this configuration, all Internet connection settings are made not in the ADSL modem, but on a computer or, in our case, in a router.
  2. The other is when, on the contrary, the modem is configured to connect to the provider, and the router simply extends this signal.

The second option is quite simple. You do not touch anything in the settings that your provider's employee has already made when connecting, but simply configure the router to receive a dynamic IP address and activate the function of dynamic distribution of addresses by DHCP networks.

The first one is a bit more complicated, so let's see how to implement it using the most common budget ADSL model as an example. D-Link modem. First of all, insert a telephone cable (with a small connector) into the corresponding ADSL connector of the modem, and into the LAN connector - a patch cord with which we connect it to the PC.

The adsl setting itself is on the computer. Go to Windows 7 "Start > Control Panel > Network and Internet > Network and Sharing Center > Change adapter settings". We find here "Local Area Connection", click right click and select "Properties > TCP / IPv4 Protocol" and set the receipt of all settings to automatic.

After that, go to the browser at http://192.168.0.1 - this is the network address in the admin panel of the D-Link modem. Enter a pair of login-password admin-admin.

In the menu, go to the “Quick Setup” section, uncheck the “DSL Auto Connect” box and set the values \u200b\u200bfor VPI and VCI - they must be specified in your service connection agreement or ask your provider. In the "PORT" item, leave "0".

After that, click the "Next" button and check the "Bridging" box, that is, we put the modem into bridge mode.

Further We put a check mark on "Enable Bridge Service" and we set the name for our bridge. Then on the next page we write the IP address and mask of our modem, that is, 192.168.0.1 and the standard mask 255.255.255.0.

Again, click "Next", look at all the final settings and click the "Save / Reboot" button in order to apply all the changes. The modem will reboot. We also restart the computer so that it receives a new network IP.

Let's go to the router. First of all, we pull out the patch cord from the PC, connect it to the router, and, in turn, connect the router with the same patch cord (RJ-45 cable) - with the modem via the WAN connector, and with the computer via LAN. If you are working with Asus routers, then it will look like in the screenshots below. We go to the "WAN" menu section and select PPPoE as a connection from the drop-down list. Next, enter all the data that the provider provided (login, password, possibly something else). And apply all these settings.

That's it, after that your router, through the mediation of an ADSL modem, should start broadcasting the Internet.

Asus ADSL router setup

The second way is that we throw out the ADSL modem link from the circuit and replace it and the router with a single device - WiFi router with support for ADSL connections.

It looks just like a regular router, only with a socket for inserting a telephone cable. Zyxel, TP-Link, D-Link, Acorp - any brand network equipment has in its model range such a device. As an example, I propose to start with the Asus DSL N-12U model.

All connection settings will be made in the admin panel of the router itself. First you need to connect a telephone cable to the ADSL modem-router, and an Ethernet patch cord to the computer. We go to the address - you already know which one 100 times - we enter the well-known login and password, if you still have not changed them (by the way, if you forgot them, you can look at the bottom of the router).

We get to the settings page, select manual setting, select a provider from the list, the settings for which are already sewn into the device. If it is not there, then select "Not in list". Also here you will need to fill in all the parameters for VPI, VCI, Protocol and Encapsulation Mode,

and also in the next step your login and password for access. All this is learned from the provider or from the contract.

These were the settings of the modem part. And now we go to the router room, set the network ID and encryption keys.

How to set up a TP-Link ADSL modem?

Now we deal with more sophisticated ADSL TP-Link modem router Archer VR400 c USB input, to which you can subsequently connect a printer or 3G modem.

Here we also use quick setup, which is located at http://192.168.0.1. We are greeted by a new cute minimalistic interface.

I hope I answered the question "How to connect an ADSL modem through a router"

For a snack - step by step video instructions for different models:

Summer is coming soon vacation, cottage... It's time to start thinking about how to stay in nature and at the same time be online. The easiest option for obtaining mobile Internet access outside the city is 3G modem connection to laptop from mobile operator. Let's figure out how to set up a 3G modem on a computer.

How to connect a Megafon 3G modem to a laptop?

So, when you have chosen a provider and a device for yourself, the only thing left is to purchase, register, install drivers and software, and, finally, connect a 3g modem via usb to a computer.

First of all, register a SIM card with operators cellular communication. As a rule, the card is provided when purchasing the device. You just need to have your passport with you, as all data is tied to account in system. In order for the SIM card not to be blocked after a few days, you need to make some data identification by making a copy of your data in a common database.

Insert the modem into any USB port on a laptop - for example, I chose the Megafon 3G modem. If this slot was previously occupied by another device, I advise you to restart your computer so that no errors occur. The system will automatically detect the new device. As soon as it is recognized, a new window will appear on the screen, in which there will be a notification about the installation of a special software. After installation, the Internet on a laptop or PC will work.

How to set up a 3G modem on a computer?

I am often asked how to set up a 3G modem, but in fact, as you can see, you don’t need to do anything. In the event that the 3G modem setup program does not automatically start by itself, then after inserting the device into the USB connector, go to "Start> Computer", run "Autorun.Exe" and in the window that opens, click the "Connect" button:

As soon as the system finishes unpacking the program, a window will appear in which click the "Finish" button. Next, simply restart your computer for all changes to take effect. I also advise you to never pull out the 3G modem from the USB port so that the system does not detect a new device again. In order for the signal to be received in different places, you can use special extension cords - we will talk about them in the article about increasing the signal range. They are from one to ten meters long and are available in almost any computer store.

When you can't connect wired Internet 3G modems come to the rescue, you can connect to the Internet with which you can almost anywhere. If the modem does not work as a wireless router, you can connect it to a Wi-Fi router using the network on several devices at once. Today, of course, there are 4G routers, but they are, frankly, not cheap.

To use gadgets in a bundle, the router must have a USB connector, which can be used not only for hard drives, flash drives or printers, but also to transfer data from modems. Not all routers support connecting modems; before buying them, you should make sure that they are compatible on the official websites of manufacturers. Here are some router models that support Internet distribution from modems:

  1. Asus RT-N18U, RT-AC56U, RT-N14U, RT-N66U, RT-N10U B;
  2. Tp-Link TL-MR3420, TL-MR3220;
  3. D-Link DSL-2650U, 2750U;
  4. Zyxel Keenetic DSL, Keenetic Omni II, Zyxel Keenetic Viva, Zyxel Keenetic Extra.

Not all 3G USB modems are supported, so D-Link is guaranteed to work with Huawei: E150, E1550, E160G, E169G, E220, ZTE: MF112, MF626, MF627. Compatibility of other devices can be found on the manufacturer's websites: Asus, Tp-Link, Zyxel.

Setting up a router

For an example of setting, we will use a bunch of TP-Link TL-MR3220 and 3G modem Huawei E1550. Before connecting, you need to check that the SIM card is not blocked by a PIN code. Next, connect the modem to the router and open web interface the last one. Its address is written on a sticker on the bottom of the router along with the username and password for logging in. Usually it is 192.168.0.1 or 192.168.1.1 and login is admin, password is admin. Go to the Quick Setup tab:

After that, we select the 3G only connection, since only the modem will be used. You can configure it as a spare, which works when the main broadband is turned off, but we will not consider this possibility now.

Here we put a tick in front of Set the Dial Number, APN, Username and Password manuall, select Authentication Type: Chap and enter the data Dial Number, APN, login / password of the operator that is used in the modem.

For Intertelecom it is:

  1. Set Number: #777
  2. APN: it.od.ua;
  3. Username and password: IT.

For PeopleNet:

  1. Set Number: #777;
  2. APN: #777;
  3. This e-mail address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it. - number from the contract;
  4. Password: 6 characters from the contract.

After waiting, the modem will connect to the network. For wifi settings connection, click "Next".

We assign the name of the access point, the type of encryption and assign a password of at least 8 characters. We confirm the data entry and reboot the router with the “Reboot” button in the next menu. We are waiting for the reboot, we are convinced of the correct operation of the modem, seeing the inscription Identify successful in the Network - 3G menu.

To automatically connect to the network, select Connect Automatically. After all the manipulations, you can try to connect mobile devices on Wi-Fi and enjoy the Internet.

In some cases, you may be faced with the need to solve the problem - how to connect a router via a modem, for the subsequent distribution of Internet access among computers, for example, in a small office or at home. Typically, such a modem, which stands for "modulator-demodulator", is a data converter for transmission over long distances.

At the moment, 3 types of modems are common:

Mobile communications (3G and analogues);
- cable (for cable television);
- ADSL modem (for telephone lines).

Modems are limited in functionality and for greater convenience of using the Internet, they lack some functions. The modem + router bundle adds these features, this article is about setting it up.

First of all, you need to decide on the type of modem, for example, let's take a device for connecting through a cable television network.

The second task is to determine which interface the modem is connected to "inside the network", possible options- , or Ethernet, suitable for any network card.

The third step - the selection of a router, is that you need to select a device that has an "external" interface that matches your modem, a Wi-Fi module and network connectors.

All devices must have a connection manual in the package, and you need three things from it:

Picture of the connection diagram;
- device IP address;
- administrator username and password.

Be sure to check the availability of instructions when buying! Modem connects TV cable to the so-called "tee", a cable line, and the Ethernet connector is connected with the appropriate cable to the router into the "INTERNET" connector. Be careful when connecting, you can call this connector "WAN". modem with USB connector inserted into the appropriate port on the router. Next, you need to enter the settings from any device connected by cable to the router. network card computer, enable obtaining an IP address in auto mode and restart the computer.

Typically, the router's IP address looks like this: http://192.168.0.1 or http://192.168.1.1. You need to enter this address in the address bar of the browser and press "ENTER" on the keyboard.

Use any browser other than Opera to set up, it often gives errors when setting up the equipment.

After entering the address, a page for entering the username and password for accessing the settings will be displayed. This information must be included in the instructions. Often they are:

Username: admin
Password: admin

Sometimes you do not need to enter a password, instead press Enter and enter the control menu. Next, the first task is to connect the modem and router. To do this, according to the instructions for the modem, find its IP address. Here it is important to pay attention to this. If the modem's IP address matches the IP address you used to connect to the router, you will have to reconfigure the router first. To do this, we are looking for the local network management page (LOCAL) in the settings menu. If the modem's IP address turns out to be the same as that of the router: 192.168.1.1, then you need to set the values \u200b\u200bfor the local network on the router: 192.168.2.1 range from 1 to 255).

Next, you need to coordinate the EXTERNAL IP address of the router with the modem and set the parameters for connecting to the Internet. If the modem's IP address was 192.168.1.1, then for the router we will select a STATIC IP address (Static IP) and set it by changing the last digit in the combination, in this case it should be something like this: 192.168.1.2, the last digit from 2 to 255 but not 1.

It remains to set up an Internet connection. The login / password link will be controlled by the router, and the data is specified in the contract with the provider. Most often, you need to choose from the possible connection types "PPTP" (L2TP or PPPoE are also possible, others are less common), then enter the available data from the contract, save the router settings and ... that's it!

If the provider does not use non-standard settings, then your home network already connected to the Internet. If something does not work out, remember that any provider through the support service is obliged to give a hint in which of the above steps you made a mistake.
