IN modern world every computer user at least once, but faced with files packed into an archive. They are convenient to send via the Internet, store various information(documents, photos and videos) because it takes up less space.

Archives are something like a container that stores files compressed according to a certain algorithm. They are created by special archiving programs. But in addition to creating, such programs are also able to unpack them. They understand many different formats, so extracting a file from an archive will work if it is saved in one of the popular ones: * .rar, *.zip, *.7z, *.tar, *exe or any less popular format.

On our site you can find an article describing free archivers: free archivers for Windows in Russian. Among them there are such popular ones as: 7-Zip, FreeArc, HaoZip, IZArc and others. Nearly all are integrated into Windows Explorer, so to extract files, just right-click on the archive and select the appropriate item. There will be several of them: "Extract to" - you yourself specify the desired folder, "Extract to Current"– the files will be saved on the same path where the archive is located, "Open in [name of the archiver]"- the program window will open, where you can go into the archive and get out of it only required files.

If you choose something from the list of programs, you can not only extract files from archives, but also create them yourself, encrypt, set passwords, create self-extracting ones, and many different functions will be available.

For those who are more likely to deal with archives, for example, for work or study, and do not want to take up disk space with utilities, of all the functions of which only one will be used, there is another option - these are programs for unpacking archives. Among their main advantages, the following can be distinguished: they take up little space, have a limited set of functions, are easy to use, and understand a lot of formats. Let's take a brief look at them here.

Universal Extractor

Universal Extractor - using this program, you can unpack the archive of the format: .7z, .rar, .exe, arc, .bz2, .tbz2, .tar.bz2, .deb, gz, .tgz, .tar.gz, .iso, lzh, .lzma, .pea, .msi, . wim, .msm, .xz, .jar and others. Follow the link above and in the article you will find detailed description how to use it and download link.

There is a version for installation on a computer, and there is portable version, which will not make any changes to the operating system. Russian language is supported for the interface, knows how to extract files from a self-extracting archive. It can also be used to extract individual files from the archive. There are very few settings, which will not distract you from the main task.

The interface is extremely simple. There are only two fields here: in the first, specify the path to the archive, in the second - the path to the folder where the files will be extracted. Click "OK" and wait for the process to complete. She works very fast.

ExtractNow

ExtractNow is another free unpacker, you can download it from the link below. Can open the following formats: zip, rar, iso, bin, img, ima, imz, jar, gz, lzh, lha and sit. There is no Russian language for the interface, and this is a disadvantage, since you can select various parameters in the program. You can also specify in the settings if you want to add the utility to the context menu.

You can add files to the main window by simply dragging and dropping the mouse from Explorer or from the Desktop. The advantage is that you can add several archives at once, and then start unpacking them.

The program can search for archives in the specified directory - click on an empty area of the main window, select a folder and wait until all archived files are found.

Choose either an archiver program if you plan to create archives yourself in the future, or one of the described programs that will easily help you extract files from an archive.

How extract files from archive, perhaps users who have never used archivers will ask. Or they got an archive with which they don’t know what to do.

What is the archive for? An archive is needed to pack several files into one archived file. It's like multiple items in one package. For example, it is convenient to transfer such an archive to another person than to send each file separately, be it documents or music files, photos. The archive also allows you to compress the size of the files when archiving. You can also create an archive with a password so that only the recipient can view the contents knowing the password to the archive.

Today I'll tell you how extract files from the archive. Very often when downloading files from the Internet, we get archived files. If you do not have an archiver installed, download the WinRAR archiver from the Internet and install it on your computer. In the future, more than once will have to work with this program.

An example of how to visually recognize an archive created by the WinRAR program can be seen in the picture:

So, to unpack the archive, you need to click on the archive itself right click mouse and select "Extract Files" from the menu.

Next, in the appeared window "Path and extraction options", select which folder to unzip and click "OK".

I chose, as you can see in the picture, extract the archive to the desktop. And after extracting the archive, a regular folder with the same name as the archive will appear on the desktop.

To extract files from an archive:

    Open archive - Press the Open button and find and highlight the desired archive file and click OK.

    Select the desired files in the archive that you want to extract and click the Extract button.

    The Extract dialog box will open, in which select the folder where the extracted files will be placed (or create a new one - the New Folders button) and click the Extract button in this window.

Assigning unpacking options in the Extract dialog box.

    Skip older files - allows you to avoid overwriting new files with older ones;

    Overwrite existing files - makes it possible to write extractable files over files of the same name;

    Use folder files - allows you to create folders for unpacked files with the names in which they were before packing.

They also use Drag-and-Drop technology to extract files from an archive. To do this, select the necessary files in the archive and drag them to the desired folder with the mouse.

Viewing the contents of a file

To view the contents of a file, select the file and click the View button.

To delete a file from the archive, select this file and display its context menu, in which select the Delete command and select the deletion mode in the window that opens: Entere Archive - all files in this archive, Selectid Files - selected files, Files - files specified by the mask.

Creating a self-extracting archive

WinZip does not create a self-extracting archive, but converts an already created archive file into a self-extracting archive (exe file).

To do this, open the archive, select from the menu Actions- Make. Exe. In the WinZip Self-Extractor window that opens, in the first line you can specify or search for another archive (Browse button) that you want to convert. In the second line write the address where you will place the converted archive or use the default address of your machine. Then press the OK button. A new dialog box will open, in which click the button unzip to create this self-extracting archive and then close the dialog boxes with the button Clouse.

Creating a multi-volume archive

Multi-volume archives are needed when the archive does not fit on one floppy disk. WinZip knows how to cut an archive into parts as well as others. A multi-volume archive is created in the same way as a regular one, only in the Add window there is a Multiple disk Spanning list (separation into several volumes) and it is available only when the archive is created on a floppy disk.

Split modes for multiple volumes:

    Automatic - as one disk is full, it will require the next;

    Automatic + wipe first disk prompt - before starting archiving, you will be prompted to erase some files from the floppy disk, and then just like in Automatic mode;

    No spanning - there will be no spanning, and when the diskette is full, a message will be displayed about the diskette being full (Disk full).

DOS RAR programs by Ukrainian programmer Yevgeny Roshalo have been well known for many years in the country and around the world. WinRAR is an improved version of the RAR archiver, equipped with a convenient graphical shell.

WinRAR creates archives not only of its own type (with rar extension), but also zip. But it can also extract files from ARJ, CAB, LZH, TAR, GZ, ACE, UUE format archives, and can view the contents of these files. And for the arj, cab, lzh files, the archivers themselves are not even required.

In terms of file compression, WinRAR is significantly superior to WinZip, and in most cases even ARJ. WinRAR is able to work at different speeds, but both are not yet achievable at the same time.

The program works not only in a Windows window, but also from the command line, like a regular DOS archiver.

WinRAR can create multi-volume self-extracting archives and multi-volume self-extracting archives.

Thus, WinRAR is a powerful flexible tool with a wide range of functions, practically in no way inferior to WinZip, and often ahead of it.

The menu and help system are presented in Russian. Therefore, the purpose of the structural elements of the archiver window is clear (they are visible in the figure below) and it makes no sense to consider their purpose. The only thing I want to add is that the toolbar buttons change depending on where you are: one in the archive, another outside it.
