How to connect and configure a Wi-Fi router? Step by step instructions for all models. How difficult is it to install a Wi-Fi router at home on your own? Everything you need to know before buying a Wi-Fi router Possible problems when setting up a Wi-Fi router yourself

Hey! I'll probably start with the fact that I have already written many articles on Wi-Fi setup routers, and about problems that may arise during the configuration and operation of wireless access points. All articles are on this site, mainly in the "Internet" section. In this article I will give links to the most necessary materials that may be useful to you when setting up WiFi router.

What is this article about? I want to talk in general terms about self-installation and configuration of a Wi-Fi router. Perhaps you want to buy a router and make a wireless network at home. Now is the time to go nowhere without it. One computer is connected to the Internet via cable, this is already in the past. These are constant fights in the family for the opportunity to surf the Internet and a long queue at the back :).

Moreover, now almost all devices have the ability to connect to the Internet via Wi-Fi. Phones, smartphones, tablets, laptops, netbooks, etc. And if there is no Wi-Fi at home, then you simply limit their capabilities.

Before I forget, I would like to separately write a few words about the dangers of Wi-Fi, or rather the waves that a Wi-Fi router emits. I wrote about this in a separate article. If you are interested in this question, then read the article. I will only say that there is no point in hiding from these “harmful waves”.

Start searching for networks in your home. And you will see how many routers your neighbors have already installed (provided that you do not live in the village, there most likely will not be Wi-Fi networks). Moreover, the radiation from Wi-Fi is several times less than from conventional mobile phone, which we also keep near our heads. So they are afraid of a Wi-Fi router, this is not quite normal and stupid.

Another plus wireless hotspot access (aka Wi-Fi router) that you can completely get rid of the wires in your house. For some reason I am sure that your computer is not installed near the front door :). And this means that the network cable must be pulled through the entire house. What if you just did good repair? Wi-Fi router solves all problems. You can put it, or hang it near the entrance doors, and some manage to put it in the common corridor (well, when the corridor into two apartments).

You will probably ask: “But what about a regular desktop computer that does not have the ability to connect via Wi-Fi and needs to be connected via network cable?” everything is very simple, WiFi receivers for such cases. About how to connect desktop computer to Wi-Fi, I wrote in an article.

Is it possible to connect and configure a Wi-Fi router yourself?

Maybe! And throw away any doubts and excuses there, they say I don’t know how, it’s difficult, etc. Well, for example, I set everything up myself, I also wrote instructions on the site. If you are planning to call a wizard who will install and configure Wi-Fi, then my advice to you is to try it yourself first. Fail- call the master. It turns out- perfect! Will you be able to, for example, change the provider and what, call the master again? And then set everything up yourself. Moreover, everything is relatively simple. You just need to want!

Here is my detailed one to help you. Everything is detailed and point by point, there should not be any problems. According to this instruction, you can configure other routers, because the process is practically the same. Lots of useful information It is also in the comments, you can read them.

Now I just remembered that I did not write about Wi-Fi selection router, because you are probably very interested in this question. I won't recommend anything specific. Choose a router based on the amount of money you are willing to spend on it and the advice of the seller in the store (well, if the sales assistant is sensible). All routers are good in their own way and all have their drawbacks. So I took a cheap one for the house a year ago (250 UAH/1000 rubles) router TP Link TL-WR841N, I was advised in the store. Excellent device, for a year of operation no problems at all.

Possible problems when setting up a Wi-Fi router yourself

Judging by the comments to the articles on this site, there are problems. But that shouldn't scare you. Someone came across a defective router, someone simply did not want to understand the nuances of the settings and immediately writes: “Sergey help, for some reason it doesn’t work!” :).

Setting up the router - the main points:

  1. We connect the router to the computer via a network cable
  2. Connect internet to router
  3. Go to router settings
  4. Tab customization WAN. Settings from the provider, if you do not know what settings to specify, then you can safely call and ask the provider.
  5. Setting up a wireless Wi-Fi network. Password setting, encryption type, security type, etc.

These are the main points, read more about setting up in the article. As for various kinds of problems and errors, they most often occur when specifying settings from the provider and when setting up wireless network.

But if there is a problem, then there is a solution. I tried to collect all the main problems when setting up a router and when connecting to Wi-Fi. Of course, not just problems, but their solutions.

For convenience, I will probably make a list of links to pages where I wrote about solving certain errors:

  • Well, the most common problem when setting up a router is probably. Not only is this article the most popular on this site, so on this moment(04/09/2013) left to her 739 comments.
  • And others… 🙂

I tried to collect all articles with major errors. If you don't find something, then use the search on the site, maybe I missed something. Well, or ask in the comments, we'll try to figure it out.

Now on sale there are a huge number of different Wi-Fi routers from different manufacturers. And that's good, there are plenty to choose from. But right after buying a router, we need to install, connect and configure it. And if the connection process practically does not differ depending on the model, then the setup process itself and the page with the settings of the router can be different even from one manufacturer.

It is very difficult to give detailed and step-by-step instructions for setting up within one article. different models. But I'll try. In this article, I will describe in detail and show how to install and configure a Wi-Fi router. No matter what make and model you have. This universal instruction Suitable for both setting up a new router and re-configuring. You can do everything yourself. And it is not necessary to pay for the setup of specialists.

Entering the router settings. How to access the web interface?

Each router has its own web interface (site with settings, control panel), which can be accessed through a browser by going to the appropriate address.

Important! To enter the router settings and configure it, your device (PC, laptop, smartphone, tablet) must be connected to the router via a cable, or via a Wi-Fi network. In this case, access to the Internet on the computer may not be. You don't need internet to access the control panel!

If your computer has a high-speed connection (may be with the name of your provider), then after connecting through the router, you do not need to run it!

To enter the settings we need find out the address our router and factory username and password for authorization. This information is located on the body of the device itself. Looks like this:

On a computer, or mobile device, which is connected to the router, open the browser (Opera, Chrome, Yandex.Browser, etc.) and go to the address indicated on the case. Or try 192.168.1.1 and 192.168.0.1.

Important! Enter the address in address bar, not in the search bar. Many people get confused, and instead of a page with settings, they end up on a page with search results of some search engine.

On the login page, you need to enter a username and password. The factory ones are indicated on the body of the device. Most often these are admin and admin. On some models, the default settings are not protected, and immediately after entering the control panel, you need to set a login and password.

How to set up a Wi-Fi router?

In order to use the Internet through a router, you need at least:

  • Set up an internet connection.
  • Set up a Wi-Fi network.

In most cases, this is sufficient. I also advise you to change the password that protects the web interface of the router. Is there some more IPTV settings, USB drives, parental control etc., but not everyone needs them.

In the control panel of almost every router there is a so-called "Master quick setup", aka "Quick Setup". On some devices, it is open immediately after entering the control panel. It can be used to configure the Wi-Fi router step by step. Internet connection, wireless network, etc. For example, how it looks like TP Link:

You can try it, it's very convenient.

Internet setup. The most important step

The main thing is correctly configure the router to connect to the provider. If he can not connect to the Internet, then on all devices there will be a connection "Without access to the Internet." Many users who try to set everything up with their own hands most often encounter problems at this stage.

Each ISP uses a certain type of connection. Dynamic IP (DHCP), Static IP, PPPoE, L2TP, PPTP. This type of connection must be specified in the control panel of the router, and set certain parameters that are issued by the Internet provider.

Important! You must know exactly what type of connection your ISP has. Also all the necessary data to connect (Username: Password) if they are needed. As a rule, this information is indicated in the contract that you received when connecting to the Internet.

Some providers bind by MAC address. This is also desirable to clarify.

If your provider uses a "Dynamic IP" (DHCP) connection, then the Internet should work immediately after the connection, since this type of connection is set by default on routers.

If the Internet through the router is already working (and you didn't run any connections on the computer), then you can skip this section and go straight to setting up Wi-Fi.

When the connection type is PPPoE, L2TP, PPTP, or Static IP (which is very rare), then you need to set the necessary parameters. Usually, this is the username and password that the provider gave you. In the control panel, the section with these settings is most often called: "WAN", "Internet", "Internet".

For an example of what it looks like PPPoE setup connections on an ASUS router:

Other examples:

Target: so that the Internet through the router will work on all devices. By cable and Wi-Fi. If this does not happen, then it is pointless to continue the setup.

You can always call the provider and clarify what parameters and where you need to specify. Many of them help over the phone.

I hope everything worked out for you.

Change Wi-Fi network settings

I highly recommend changing the Wi-Fi network name and password. It is also desirable to set your region. Everything is simple there. You can do this in the section with wireless network settings. It can be called differently: "Wi-Fi", "Wireless network", "Wireless", "Wireless mode". If you have a dual-band router, then the settings must be set separately for the network at a frequency of 2.4 GHz and 5 GHz.

  • In the field "Network name" (SSID) you need to register a new name. English letters.
  • In the "Password" field (wireless key) think up and write down a password. Minimum 8 characters. Protection type - WPA2 - Personal.
  • Well, there should be a "Region" field. Change it to yours.
  • IPTV on ASUS routers.

    If something goes wrong during the setup process, you can always reset the settings to the factory settings and try to set everything up again. On the case, find the "Reset" or "Reset" button, press it and hold for about 10 seconds. By the indicators, you will understand when the reset occurred.

    You can leave questions in the comments. Only I have a small request, describe the problem in detail. Write the router model. And it is very difficult to understand and advise something when you do not understand the question itself. Best wishes!

If you decide to install wi-fi at home, at work, or in any other place, then you definitely need to purchase a special device called a router or router. This is a special device that distributes wireless Internet at a certain distance. Routers are classified by power, number of connected objects, speed, range, etc. Therefore, if you want to purchase a router, be sure to check out its specifications. After purchasing this device, you will need to install it. I am sure that 99% of users will have problems doing this, so this article is about how to install a router.

How to install a router - step by step guide

There are a huge number of routers from different manufacturers, but the most popular are D-Link. That is why we will figure out how to install a D-Link wi-fi router.

1) Open the box with the purchased device, take it out and connect it to the power supply. The lights on the front should light up. If they do not light up, then there is some problem with the router. On the back side we see several ports. We need a port labeled "Internet", into which we must insert the plug that was connected to the computer.

2) In any of the other ports we place the cable that was bundled with the router. This cable must be connected to the computer (to the place where we pulled out the Internet wire).

3) Open any program that gives access to the Internet. In we write the following numbers: 192.168.0.1. This page - main page settings. You don't need an internet connection to connect to it.

4) We continue to figure out how to install the router. We have opened an authorization page with the fields username and password. In the name field, write admin, and leave the password field blank.

5) On the page that opens, select the Setup item, then the Internet Setup item on the left and then click Manual Internet Connection Setup.

6) In the Internet Connection Type section that opens, select the item called PPPoE user name / password and select the Dynamic PPPoE item. In the fields Name, Password and Confirm password, enter the data that is written in the contract with your Internet provider.

7) Look a little lower and see the item "clone poppy address". We click on it. In the Connect mode select item, put a dot in front of Always. The rest of the items do not need to be changed.

8) The discussion on how to install is almost complete. It remains only to understand In the device menu, which is located on the left, select the item Wireless installation, then the Manual wireless connection setup button will appear in the center, click on it and look at the main settings menu that opens. In the Wireless section, check the box next to Enable wireless network, and in the Wireless network name field, write any name. We also fill in the Wireless network key field and remember it. This field will store your wi-fi password. It is needed so that neighbors and other strangers do not connect to the router.

I hope that after reading this article, you figured out how to install a router.

Not so long ago, a computer, and even more so a laptop, was a luxury. Today, almost every family has a computer or laptop, and in many families, almost every family member has these devices. Each such device must have access to the Internet, since a computer without the Internet is a “box”. With the development of technology, in order to divide Internet traffic into several devices, it is no longer necessary to connect a separate cable to each device, everything can be done over the air - using Wi-Fi technology.

The content of the article:

Benefits of Wi-Fi

Before we talk about setting up a Wi-Fi network at home, let's talk about the tasks and advantages of this technology. So, if you have a need to divide the existing Internet channel into several devices, then you need a router. If you want to share the Internet channel by connecting devices without using wires, then a Wi-Fi router will help you with this. We have already told you about that, and therefore, before buying it, we recommend that you read this article again. WiFi router - great option if you have devices that support Wi-Fi networks. Thus, by installing a Wi-Fi router in the most central point, you can provide Wi-Fi coverage throughout the apartment, which is very convenient, because you will not need to pull extra wires. If your computer does not have WiFi adapter, then this question can be solved in two ways: install a Wi-Fi router in the room where the computer is located, or purchase a Wi-Fi adapter. A Wi-Fi adapter is a small device in the form of a flash drive or in the form of a card inserted into a PCI slot.

In view of the fact that in almost every family there is a need WiFi settings router, then we will tell you how to configure it yourself, without calling the wizard.

Setting up a Wi-Fi router

To configure the router, it must be connected via cable to a computer or laptop. The connection diagram must be displayed in the instructions. We unpack the router, fasten the antennas to it, then connect one part of the network cable (which comes with the kit) to the router, and the other to the computer (laptop). Then we connect the power of the router and after that we connect the network cable of the Internet provider to it.

How to enter the router menu

Absolutely all Wi-Fi routers are configured using the WEB interface, this is a kind of site with settings. That is, in order to configure the router, you need to open a page with its settings in the browser. To do this, enter "192.168.1.1" in the address bar of the browser and press the "Enter" key. After that, a window will appear on the screen in which you will need to enter your login and password to access the router settings. Standard (by default) login and password from the router settings menu: "admin" - in small letters. After entering, press "OK" and get into the menu.

Flashing a Wi-Fi router

So, in order to set up a Wi-Fi router, you first need to reflash it. If you are a fairly experienced person, and you know what and how, then now we will tell you what you need to do for this. If you do not really like to understand all the intricacies computer technology, then you can do without flashing the router. Firmware is a kind of operating system router on which it is based.

Why do you need a flashing? Re-flashing the router is necessary in order to ensure the normal and high-quality operation of the device. As a rule, each Wi-Fi router from the moment of release until the moment of discontinuation has the same firmware version. This firmware passes only internal tests, but when the device goes on mass sale, users find all the problems in the operation of the device, in various situations. Therefore, the "native" firmware is not perfect and you may have problems with the device: low speed, freezes, problems with Wi-Fi, etc. That is why it is better to install new version firmware.

In order to reflash a Wi-Fi router, you need to download the firmware file. You can download it, of course, from the official website of the manufacturer. To do this, on the website of the device manufacturer, find the model of your Wi-Fi router, and click on the “Downloads” tab, this is where the list of available firmware should be located. Some manufacturers may send you to an FTP server where the firmware is stored. But do not rush to download the most latest version firmware, first read the forums where users who installed this firmware wrote a review about its work and concluded whether it is worth installing it or not.

After downloading the archive with the firmware, unzip it and copy the firmware file to the downloads folder. In the router menu, go to the Firmware section and in the available field specify the path to the router new firmware. More detailed instructions how to reflash the router, you can find in the instructions for the device.

After flashing, go to the Network / IPConfig / Network menu (depending on the model of your router) and first make the provider settings.

WAN connection type
  • Dynamic IP / DHCP / Dynamic IP - select if the provider provides a dynamic IP;

  • Static ip / Statistical IP address - select if the provider is built on local network, where you need to enter an IP address, subnet mask and Gateway to access the Internet.

  • PPPoE - select if you need to enter a username and password to access the Internet.
DNS

DNS 1 and DNS 2 - it is advisable to leave them installed automatically, if the provider requires them manual installation(which is very rare), then we enter the primary and secondary DNS. It is not always necessary to enter the provider's DNS in the network settings, sometimes external DNS work better than the provider's.

Then go to the Wireless tab, which contains the Wi-Fi settings.

How to set up a Wi-Fi network

Network name (SSID)

The network name is the name of your Wi-Fi router that will be displayed when the device searches for a network to connect to Wi-Fi. We recommend that you set the name as original as possible to avoid overlaps. If there are 2 devices with the same names on the network, then incorrect operation is possible. WiFi connections.

Channel

This is the frequency channel over which data will be transmitted. Pay special attention to this parameter, because because of this you may have low speed via Wi-Fi. Why? Each channel has its own, so to speak, data transfer volumes. The more devices you have connected via Wi-Fi, the lower the Internet speed for each device - the same goes for the channel, the more devices use the same channel, the less its bandwidth. Therefore, even if you have a high speed Internet connection, and WiFi channel overloaded, then wifi speed connections will be very low.

If you do not have such advanced neighbors, then this parameter can be left at the value of "Auto". It is very easy to check the Wi-Fi activity of neighbors - call up the list of Wi-Fi connections menu and see the number of Wi-Fi routers that are available in your apartment: if there are few of them, then the channel is enough, if there are many, then it is better to install it manually.

In view of the fact that "Auto" selects the 6th or 7th channels, then with manual selection it is necessary to select the channels that are at the beginning. That is, if in the future, the connection speed via Wi-Fi has dropped, and via cable it corresponds to the declared one, then it is possible that the whole problem lies in the Wi-Fi channel.

Mode (Wireless Mode)

This setting sets the wireless network standard. 2 factors depend on the wireless network standard: the ability to work in it with older types of devices and the speed of Wi-Fi. That is, Wi-Fi has its own standards of operation, and to make it more clear to you, let's look at an example. V cellular communication At first, the Internet was transmitted via WAP, then via GPRS, then via EDGE, etc., with each new type, the data transfer speed also grew - in our situation, everything is the same. The further down the alphabet letter the communication standard is, the higher the data rate it supports. But here it is necessary to take into account one more point: not all devices released quite a long time ago and supporting work in WiFi networks support the latest type of communication - and this must be taken into account.

Choosing a type wireless communication, set the type to be supported by all your WiFi devices ami. Devices of a new type can work with older types, but not vice versa. But do not be upset, most modern Wi-Fi routers can work with several standards - which is very convenient, for this, set the value to "b / g / n" (if any).

Channel Width

The channel width is specified in megahertz. We recommend leaving this parameter on the “Auto” parameter, or setting its maximum value.

Maximum data transfer rate

This parameter sets top speed data transfer - speed limit. Of course, it is best to set this parameter to the maximum value. If you are the main user of the Internet, and you need a high data transfer rate over a network cable on your computer, then you can cut the speed over Wi-Fi in this way.

Encryption type

Another important parameter when setting up a Wi-Fi router - the type of encryption of transmitted data. The stronger the type of encryption, the more secure your data will be transmitted. To date, the most best type encryption is WPA-PSK/WPA2-PSK. But here you should also pay attention to the fact that not all devices support given type encryption and therefore it is possible that when choosing it, you will need to find a “golden mean” for all devices.

How to set up Wi-Fi on a computer and laptop

Let's briefly describe how to set up Wi-Fi on Windows 7 and Windows 8. In order to set up Wi-Fi on a laptop or computer, you need to select your Wi-Fi router in the list of Wi-Fi devices, which you gave the original name. Then we click on his name 2 times with the mouse, and we are prompted to enter a password - we enter the password, it is checked, and if you entered everything correctly, the device connects to Wi-Fi. After that, we recommend checking both over the network and over Wi-Fi. Please note that Wi-Fi speed may be limited throughput router. Therefore, it may differ from that which is available on the LAN.

Sometimes, to connect a laptop via Wi-Fi, you need to separately enable the Wi-Fi module. As a rule, on laptops, the corresponding button is responsible for this, it can be either separate or combined with the F7 key.

More detailed information You can learn about setting up a Wi-Fi connection in the video below.

Setting up a router is not an easy procedure, but we are ready to help you figure out all its intricacies. Just carefully study the instructions below, and then in just a few minutes you can easily set the desired parameters and get to work!

#one. Connection

Before you configure the router yourself through a computer, you need to connect it:

  • Plug the internet cable into the WAN/Internet port;

#2. Login to the web interface

We would like to inform you that WiFi setup router online through a browser can only be done after turning on the device. When you activate the work, the distribution of the wireless network with factory settings (login, password) will begin. You can change the router settings in a special web interface that each device is equipped with.

Important! To open the setup interface, you need to connect your computer to the device. Internet is not required.

To open the site for configuring the router, do the following:

  • Open a browser;
  • Enter the IP address in the address bar;
  • In the window that opens, log in - enter your username and password.
  • The address, network name, and login pin are on the sticker located on the reverse side router.
  • Some devices do not have login details - they need to be set after logging into the interface.

Please note that some manufacturers set the parameters on their own - then you do not need to do anything when you turn it on for the first time.

#3. Setting instructions

Most routers have the option of a special wizard that will help you quickly set the desired parameters. For example, here, the item is called "Quick Setup":

The most important thing you need to set up:

  1. Internet connection;
  2. WiFi is a network.

Let's deal with the first parameter first. Our main goal is, of course, the operation of the Internet on devices:

  • Open the general settings tab. Most often found in the WAN or Internet section;
  • Specify the type of connection of the provider, username and password - you can see the information in the contract;
  • If the provider requires you to go through the binding of the MAC address, specify the required data (from the contract).

Important! If the provider uses (DHCP), then the connection to the network will occur automatically. Skip this section of the instructions, you do not need to reconfigure the router.

  • Open the section called Wi-Fi. It may be called differently - Wireless network / Wireless / Wireless mode;
  • In the "Network name" or "SSID" field, enter a new name (only in Latin);
  • In the "Wireless Network Key" field, enter the invented identification code;
  • Protection type - WPA2 - Personal;
  • Change the region to the location in the corresponding line;
  • Save your changes.

If you want to change the router settings, we recommend that you change the factory access code. This is important if you want to protect yourself from unauthorized entry. Here's how to do it:

  • Find the security or privacy settings section;
  • Change the data to a new, secure code.

All of the above instructions apply if you need to set up a new router instead of the old one or install completely new equipment. By the way, we suggest you watch a general video on how to configure the router. It is perfect for those who are not confident in their abilities, because it shows the whole process step by step and in detail!
