Hardware and software setup

Windows 8 1 disable unnecessary programs. Disk defragmentation

Hello.

Most Windows users are rarely satisfied with the speed of its operation, especially after some time after it is installed on a disk. It was the same with me: the “brand new” Windows 8 worked quite quickly for the first month, but then the well-known symptoms - folders no longer open so quickly, the computer turns on for a long time, “brakes” often appear, seemingly out of the blue ...

In this article (the article will be in 2 parts ()) we will touch on the initial Windows setup 8, and in the second - we optimize it for maximum acceleration using various software.

So, part one...

1) Disabling "unnecessary" services

By default, after installing Windows, services are running that most users do not need. For example, why would a user need a print manager if they don't have a printer? In fact, there are many such examples. Therefore, let's try to disable services that most do not need (naturally, you need this or that service - it's up to you, that is Windows optimization 8 will be for a specific user).

Attention! Disabling services all in a row and at random is not recommended! In general, if you haven’t dealt with this before, I recommend starting Windows optimization with the next step (and returning to this after everything else has already been completed). Many users unknowingly turn off services at random, causing Windows to become unstable...

To start, you need to go to services. To do this: open the OS control panel, and then search for "services". Next, select View Local Services. See fig. one.

Now, how to disable a particular service?

1. Select one or another service from the list, and double-click on it with the left mouse button (see Fig. 2).

2. In the window that appears: first click the “ stop" button, and then select the startup type (if the service is not needed at all, just select " do not start" from the list).

List of services that can be disabled* (in alphabetical order):

1) Windows Search (Search Service).

Quite a "gluttonous service" that indexes your content. If you do not use search, it is recommended to turn it off.

2) Offline files

The Offline Files service does the work of maintaining the Offline Files cache, responding to user login and logout events, implements common API properties, and sends the events that interest them to those interested in Offline Files and cache state changes.

3) IP helper service

Provides tunneling connectivity using tunneling technologies for IP version 6 (6to4, ISATAP, proxy ports, and Teredo), as well as IP-HTTPS. If you stop this service, the computer will not be able to use additional features connections provided by these technologies.

4) Secondary login

Allows you to run processes as a different user. If this service is stopped, this type of user registration is not available. If this service is disabled, then other services that explicitly depend on it cannot be started.

5) Print Manager (If you don't have a printer)

This service allows you to queue print jobs and provides communication with the printer. If you disable it, you will not be able to print or see your printers.

6) Client for tracking changed links

Supports associations of NTFS files moved within a computer or between computers on a network.

7) NetBIOS support module over TCP/IP

Provides NetBIOS support over the TCP/IP (NetBT) service and NetBIOS name resolution for clients on the network, allowing users to share files, printers, and connect to the network. If this service is stopped, these functions may not be available. If this service is disabled, all services that explicitly depend on it will fail to start.

Provides support for file sharing, printer sharing, and named pipes for this computer through network connection. If the service is stopped, these functions will fail. If this service is not enabled, any apparently dependent services will fail to start.

9) Windows Time Service

Controls date and time synchronization on all clients and servers on the network. If this service is stopped, date and time synchronization will not be available. If this service is disabled, any services that explicitly depend on it cannot be started.

10) Windows Image Upload Service (WIA)

Provides services for acquiring images from scanners and digital cameras.

11) Portable device enumerator service

Applies group policy to removable storage devices. Allows applications such as the player Windows Media and a picture import wizard, transfer and synchronize content when using removable storage devices.

12) Diagnostic Policy Service

The Diagnostic Policy Service allows you to detect problems, troubleshoot, and resolve performance-related issues Windows components. If stop this service, diagnostics will not work.

13) Program Compatibility Assistant Service

Provides support for the Program Compatibility Assistant. It monitors programs installed and launched by the user and detects known issues related to compatibility. If you stop this service, the Program Compatibility Assistant will not work correctly.

14) Windows Error Logging Service

Allows the submission of error reports when the program crashes or hangs, and allows delivery of available solutions to problems. Also allows the creation of logs for diagnostic and recovery services. If this service is stopped, error reporting may not work, and diagnostic and recovery services results may not be displayed.

15) Remote registry

Allows remote users to change registry settings on this computer. If this service is stopped, the registry can only be changed local users running on this computer. If this service is disabled, any services that explicitly depend on it cannot be started.

16) Security Center

The WSCSVC (Windows Security Center) service monitors and logs security health settings. These options include the state of the firewall (enabled or disabled), antivirus program(enabled/disabled/obsolete), anti-spyware (enabled/disabled/obsolete), windows updates(automatic or manual download and installation of updates), User Account Control (on or off), and Internet settings (recommended or different).

2) Removing programs from startup

A serious reason for the “brakes” of Windows 8 (and indeed any other OS) can be autoloading programs: i.e. those programs that are automatically loaded (and launched) along with the OS itself.

For many, for example, a bunch of programs are launched every time: torrent clients, reader programs, video editors, browsers, etc. And, interestingly, 90 percent of this entire set will be used from big to big. The question is, why are they all needed every time you turn on the PC?

By the way, with autoload optimization, you can achieve more quick turn on PC, as well as improve its performance.

Most fast way open startup programs in windows 8- press the key combination " Cntrl + Shift + Esc"(i.e. through the task manager).

Then, in the window that appears, simply select the "" tab.

Rice. 4. Task manager.

To disable a program, simply select it in the list and click on the "disable" button (bottom right).

Thus, by disabling all programs that you rarely use, you can significantly increase the speed of your computer: applications will not load your computer. RAM and load the processor with useless work ...

(By the way, even if you disable all applications from the list, the OS will still boot up and work in normal mode. Checked on personal experience(repeatedly)).

3) OS settings: theme, Aero, etc.

It's no secret that compared to Winows XP, the new Windows 7, 8 operating systems are more demanding on system resources, and this is largely due to the newfangled "design", all sorts of effects, Aero, etc. Many users do not need this excess. Moreover, by disabling it, you can increase (though not by much) performance.

The easiest way to turn off the newfangled "things" is to install a classic theme. There are hundreds of such topics on the Internet, including those for Windows 8.

(unless you want to change the subject).

Microsoft, when introducing Windows 8, focused on improving the performance and optimization of the new operating system compared to its predecessors. In my opinion, Windows 7 is generally successful, both in terms of stability and performance, especially when compared with Vista.

But, nevertheless, Microsoft with Windows 8 set a goal to increase performance compared to the Seven
It is too early to say whether they have reached their goal or not, while few users have installed themselves new windows, and have not been tested enough, but in general it has been observed that when booting up and shutting down, the Eight is faster, and overall performance seems faster. This happens because Window 8 uses less memory and disk space, consumes less CPU resources
Windows 8 file manager, task manager, and even the installation process itself has been optimized, the ultimate goal of these improvements is to increase performance and minimize resource consumption, which in turn will lead to lower power consumption and, possibly, increase the time battery life on laptops, tablets and other mobile devices. After all, the focus on mobile devices windows 8 is visible to the naked eye. Thus, it is not necessary to buy a new computer to install Windows 8, it should work well on computers sharpened for windows 7. However, if you have older hardware, then this is also not a reason for frustration. In this article, we will look at how to optimize Windows work 8, including on old hardware.

Windows 8 minimum system requirements

Although Windows 8 is latest version operating system from Microsoft, its minimum requirements not much higher than Windows Vista released 6 years ago
By Microsoft data, Windows 8's hardware requirements:

  • Processor: 1 gigahertz (GHz) or higher
  • RAM: 1 gigabyte (GB) (32-bit) or 2 GB (64-bit)
  • Disk space: 16 GB (32-bit) or 20 GB (64-bit)
  • Video card: Microsoft DirectX 9 graphics device with WDDM driver

If you would like to take advantage of some of the helper features and Windows features 8, these additional elements will also be required to:

  • To use the touch, you need a tablet PC or monitor that supports multi-touch.
  • To access the Windows Store to download and run the program, you need an active Internet connection and a screen resolution of at least 1024 x 768.

Let's start optimization

After installing the operating system. It would be good to clean up any unwanted debris left from the installation. For these purposes, for example, CCleaner is suitable.
Let's go directly to the settings. Select My Computer, click right click mouse and select Properties. If you can't find My Computer, there are two ways to do it.

    1. Right Click - Personalize - Change Desktop Icons - Check My Computer
    1. Click on Explorer on the taskbar - On the left is my computer

Select Advanced system settings - Performance Settings

Once open, go to the Visual Effects tab and then check "Ensure best performance" and click Apply.

If there is a visual effect that you need, then you can choose it individually, but remember that each effect degrades the performance of the computer.

Turn off dynamic tiles

To further optimize Windows 8 on older hardware, it is recommended to disable many unnecessary startup items, possibly disabling unused hardware and disabling any non-essential dynamic (i.e., network-attached) tiles.
Disabling dynamic tiles is a breeze. On the start screen, simply right-click on any Live Tile and select the option at the bottom of the screen to turn off dynamic tiles.

By default, Windows 8 starts Sports, Travel, Finance, News, Mail, Bing and Weather and are all active. If you can live without them, then it makes sense to turn them off.

Shutdown of not used equipment

There are not many hardware that can be disabled. Disabling however speeds up Windows, it will boot faster and free up RAM because the component driver will not be initialized. There are two ways to disable hardware via BIOS system or in the Hardware Manager. The BIOS method is preferred because the component will not even be found by Windows. The exact procedure will vary from system to system, but usually you will need to press F2 or DEL as soon as the computer is turned on. To disable hardware components through Device Manager, To do this, right-click on my computer - Properties - Device Manager. To delete, select the device and right-click, select disable.

Which devices can be disabled

  • Built-in modem - all old laptops have a Dial-up modem
  • built-in network card if you use Wi-fi or 3g modem
  • CD-DVD drive, I don't even remember the last time I used it
  • Com (RS-232) and LPT ports
  • And more (Bluetooth, wi-fi if you do not use)

Autoload settings

To disable unnecessary startup items, you can use third-party CCleaner programs or the Windows 8 built-in configuration utility (MSConfig). As a rule third party programs more flexible and have more options. For example, CCleaner has additional features that allow you to customize the launch of add-ons Internet Explorer if you want to clean up your browser

On fresh Windows 8, there won't be many startup items. After installing many applications, they will be an order of magnitude higher there, they must be disabled. To disable unnecessary startup items in CCleaner, click on the Tools button on the left side of the program menu, and then click on the start button. In the boot menu, click on Windows tab, and every program that starts with Windows will be listed. Remove all unnecessary checkboxes, with the exception of the antivirus and utilities that you regularly use

There are several ways to disable services in Windows 8, but using the System Configuration utility (aka MSConfig) seems to be the most reliable and least confusing. To run System Configuration, press WIN + R, in the Run field paste MSConfig and press enter . Microsoft services". This will protect you from disabling services you know you need and identifying third-party

Disabling some services will not affect applications in any way. But there are services, when disabled, the application for which it is responsible will stop running. So be careful.

Disabling User Account Control

Every time UAC (User Account Control) warns, a window pops up and this window suspends the system and requires confirmation, but the warning and screen dimming effect can take forever on older hardware. Eliminating the UAC notice completely can greatly improve Windows performance 8 on old hardware. But it's possible to minimize pop-ups while still having some level of extra protection, or you can just lower the UAC notification level.

To do this, pull out the Charms menu by placing the mouse cursor in any upper or lower right corner of the screen, or press win+C (others) and click on the search icon. Then highlight Options in the search bar and type UAC in the search box. "Change User Account Control Settings" will appear in the left pane.

Next, just drag the slider down one step, after that Windows 8 will notify you only when an application tries to make changes to the system. Moving the slider all the way down will disable all notifications, which is not recommended. However, if you are confident in your antivirus software, then UAC can be turned off completely

Optimizing the system is not difficult, and it does not take the user much time and resources. In the future, this will positively affect the user experience. How can you optimize Windows 8.1?

We speed up work, free up free space and increase stability

Disk Cleanup

If you do not use third-party system cleaners, we recommend starting with the simplest utility CCleaner, which you can check out. And if the desire to use similar programs no, you can delete unnecessary system files on one's own.

The system accumulates over time different files, which may never be used in the future, but it cannot delete them on its own, and this may require the user's hand. It's pretty easy to do this by default:

Enter in the search bar of the Start screen " Disk Cleanup»;
select drive C and click " OK»;
in the window that opens, check the boxes next to those parameters that you do not need. All files that you can check next to are safe to delete and will not affect the further operation of Windows in any way;
after the checkboxes are checked, Windows will automatically calculate the amount of freed space. After reviewing this information, you can click " OK”, after which the cleaning process will begin hard drive;
if there are other logical drives on the PC (those drives on which the HDD), then this procedure can be repeated with them.

Disk Defragmenter

If you've never defragmented your hard drive, then it's probably time to do so. Such a procedure will not only speed up the work, but also increase the stability of the work. Do this with system utility defragmentation:

Click Win+Q and in the search bar type " Drive optimization»;
A list of disks will appear in the window that opens. Click " Analyze” to find out the status of all disks;
if the % fragmentation is approximately 10%, then optimization can begin.

By default, disk defragmentation is set to a weekly schedule, so if you did not turn it off or change it, then you do not need to additionally defragment it. It is also recommended to change the schedule from weekly defragmentation to monthly. To do this, in the previously opened window, click " Change settings"and in the section" Frequency» Change the frequency to "monthly" or disable defragmentation altogether.

Disabling unnecessary services

By default, the system is enabled a large number of services, some of which we may never need in our lives. Therefore, you can disable them to make it easier for the computer.

Go to the control panel, and then in the search field (upper right corner) enter " services". From the list of results select " View Local Services».

Disabling services is very simple: double-click on an unnecessary service with the left mouse button, and in the opened window with properties, first change the state to " Stop' and then launch type to ' Do not run».

What can be disabled:

Offline files;
;
IP helper service (if not using IPv6);
secondary login (if there is 1 user on the PC);
print manager (if there is no printer);
client for tracking changed links;
NetBIOS support module over TCP/IP;
server;
Windows Time Service;
portable device enumerator service;
remote registry;
Windows Search (we advise you to disable it only if you do not use search. And you probably use it).

Removing programs from startup

By installing third-party programs, we often slow down the system start. Some impudent applications tend to register at startup, from which they are launched along with the inclusion of Windows. And this affects not only the long launch, but also the operation of the PC as a whole - why do you, for example, constantly running program to create a disk image? For many, along with the system, torrents, readers, video editors, etc. are launched. Moreover, in fact, these programs are needed once a month.

Unnecessary programs can be like this:

Open the task manager (Ctrl + Shift + Esc) and switch to the "" tab;
we look through the list of applications, and if we find one that is definitely not needed to start the system, we disable it. To do this, select the application with the left mouse button and click the " Disable» in the lower right corner;
you will not disable any system and important applications - the maximum that can be disabled is the drivers, but the system can be started even without them. Disable apps wisely.

This will help not only speed up the startup of the computer, but also reduce the load on the processor and RAM.

Other improvements

You can:

Enable download to desktop
prohibition to activate the switch with the mouse;
banning the activation of charms with the mouse;
replace the home screen with a list of applications;
enable search only for programs and applications.

To do this, right-click on the taskbar and select " Properties". In the opened window " Taskbar and Navigation Properties» Switch to the tab « Navigation».

1. in order to boot directly to the desktop, check the box next to " Open desktop instead of start screen when signing in»;
2. in order to partially prohibit the activation of the switch by the mouse, uncheck the " When I click on the top left, switch between recent apps»;
3. To partially disable the activation of the charms, uncheck the " Hover over top right corner to show charms»;
4. To partially replace the home screen with a list of applications, check the box next to " Show desktop background on start screen" and " When you go to the Home screen, automatically open the Apps view»»;
5. To enable search only for programs and applications, uncheck " When searching in the Apps view, search everywhere, not just my apps».

Optimize Windows wisely, but don't forget that no amount of system optimization will help if you install a lot of various programs with adware, download them from unsafe sources and do not comply with elementary rules work with PC.

Greetings to all readers!

I think I will not be mistaken if I say that at least half of laptop users (and conventional computers) are not satisfied with the speed of their work. Sometimes, you look, two laptops with the same characteristics - they seem to work at the same speed, but in reality one slows down, and the other just "flies". Such a difference can be for various reasons, but most often due to unoptimized operation of the OS.

In this article, we will consider the question of how to speed up a laptop with Windows 7 (8, 8.1). By the way, we will proceed from the fact that your laptop is in good condition (that is, everything is in order with the pieces of iron inside it). So, go ahead...

1. Speed up your laptop by adjusting the power options

At modern computers and laptops have several shutdown modes:

- hibernation (the PC will save everything that is in RAM to the hard disk and turn off);

- sleep (the computer goes into low power mode, wakes up and is ready to work in 2-3 seconds!);

- shutdown.

Us in this issue most of all interested in sleep mode. If you work on a laptop several times a day, then it makes no sense to turn it off and on again every time. Each turn on of the PC is equivalent to several hours of its operation. It is not at all critical for a computer if it works without shutting down for several days (or more).

Therefore, advice number 1 - do not turn off the laptop if you work with it today - it's better to just put it into sleep mode. By the way, sleep mode can be enabled in the control panel so that the laptop goes into this mode when closing the lid. There you can also set a password to exit sleep mode (except for you, no one will know what you are in this moment work).

To set up sleep mode - go to the control panel and go to the power settings.

Control Panel -> System and Security -> Power Options (see screenshot below).

System power settings.

Now, you can simply close the lid of the laptop and it will go into sleep mode, or you can simply select this mode in the "shutdown" tab.

Putting a laptop / computer to sleep (Windows 7).

Conclusion: As a result, you can quickly resume your work. Isn't this a tenfold acceleration of the laptop?!

2. Disable visual effects + adjust performance and virtual memory

Quite a significant burden can be exerted visual effects, as well as the file used for virtual memory. To configure them, you need to go to the computer's performance settings.

To get started, go to the control panel and enter the word "performance" in the search bar, or you can find the tab "Setting the presentation and system performance" in the "system" section. Open this tab.

In the "Visual Effects" tab, set the toggle to "Ensure Best Performance".

In the additional tab, we are interested in the swap file (the so-called virtual memory). The main thing is that this file is located on the wrong section of the hard drive on which Windows 7 (8, 8.1) is installed. The size is usually left at the default, as the system chooses.

3. Setting up startup programs

Almost every guide to optimizing Windows and speeding up your computer (almost all authors) recommends disabling and removing all unused programs from startup. This guide will be no exception...

1) Press the combination of buttons Win + R - and enter the command msconfig. See picture below.

2) In the window that opens, select the "startup" tab and uncheck all programs that are not needed. I especially recommend disabling the flags with Utorrent (decently loads the system) and heavy programs.

4. Acceleration of the laptop to work with the hard drive

1) Disabling the indexing option

This option can be disabled if you do not use disk search for files. For example, I almost never use this opportunity so I suggest turning it off.

To do this, go to "my computer" and go to the properties of the desired hard drive.

2) Enable caching

Caching allows you to significantly speed up the work with the hard drive, and therefore speed up the laptop as a whole. To enable it - first go to the disk properties, then go to the "hardware" tab. In this tab, you need to select the hard drive and go to its properties. See screenshot below.

5. Cleaning the hard drive from debris + defragmentation

Garbage in this case refers to temporary files that are used by Windows 7, 8 at a certain point in time, and then it does not need them. The OS is not always able to delete such files on its own. As their number grows, the computer may start to work more slowly.

It is best to clean the hard drive from "junk" files using some utility.

Personally, I like the utility boost speed.

Official website: http://www.auslogics.com/ru/software/boost-speed/

After launching the utility - just press one button - scan the system for problems...

After scanning, press the fix button - the program fixes registry errors, removes useless junk files + defragments the hard drive! After the reboot - the speed of the laptop increases even "by eye"!

In general, it is not so important which utility you use - the main thing is to regularly perform such a procedure.

6. A few more tips to speed up your laptop

1) Choose a classic theme. It consumes the resources of the laptop less than the others, which means it contributes to its speed.

2) Turn off gadgets, and generally use their minimum amount. Most of them are of dubious use, but they load the system decently. Personally, for a long time I had the "weather" gadget, and he demolished it, because. in any browser it is also displayed.

3) Remove unused programs, well, it makes no sense to install programs that you will not use.

4) Regularly clean your hard drive of debris and defragment it.

5) Also regularly check your computer with an antivirus program.

In general, such a small set of measures, in most cases, helps me optimize and speed up the work of most laptops with Windows 7, 8. Of course, there are rare exceptions (when there are problems not only with programs, but also with laptop hardware).

Windows 8 is a largely unfamiliar version of a familiar operating system. In it, after installation, I want to change something or customize it for myself. Clearly intended for touch screens, she asks to return the “Start” button for use on a regular PC, and there is something to optimize in the system.

Briefly on all points

What could be the optimization of Windows 8? At a minimum, this is:

  • autoload settings;
  • disable unused services;
  • other ways to reduce resource consumption.

Let's go through each item in turn, but first you should pay attention to the fact that torments most new G8 users - the lack of the usual Start menu. Its return to its rightful place is also a way to optimize computer performance.

How to return Start

This cannot be done using standard OS tools. The developers did not intend to return everyone's favorite button in Windows 8 and 8.1, but they met users only in the new "top ten". Yes, and there this menu has undergone such changes that it is not possible to call it a classic launch.

To return the “Start” to the “eight” and make the working environment familiar, you will have to use third-party programs. Of course, you only need to choose from best apps of this type, otherwise you can get a bunch of glitches. There are paid and free options. Paying even a few dollars for a familiar feature that the developers so treacherously removed is stupidity. Therefore, below are the best free ways install "Start" in Windows 8.

Classic Shell

This is free app, capable of returning the "Start" and offering different options for the familiar menu: the way it was in Windows 7, XP, and even older versions. There is a rich setting of various parameters. The program itself is free, and most importantly, it can replace the start screen with tiles. It will look something like this:

StartMenu8

Another free option. Appearance the menu will turn out not so authentic, but the setting is quite rich. You can even turn off the side right panel and, in fact, turn the “eight” into Windows 7. A start made with StartMenu8 will look like this, for example:

Remove stuff from startup

If your hardware is working a little hard with Windows 8, this is a reason to clear autorun of excess unused junk. It is useful to perform such an action even if the “eight” “flies” with you: you may find that, together with the operating system a lot of programs start, of which you use a maximum of half.

So, hold down three keys on the keyboard at the same time - Ctrl + Shift + Esc. This will bring up the Task Manager. Among its tabs is “Startup”. Go to it. Here you will see a list of everything that starts with the OS. Highlight what you want to disable and click on the appropriate button at the bottom of the window.

By clearing startup (especially if there were a lot of programs), you will significantly speed up your computer and directly facilitate the start of Windows. This completes the autoload setup.

Disable unnecessary services

It's no secret that any Microsoft OS uses a lot of so-called services in its work, a decent part of which affects the operation of the computer only by loading the RAM. Users themselves do not use these services in any way. Among them, there are even, in a sense, harmful. To get to disable services, head to the Control Panel.

To disable a particular service, right-click and select "Properties".

And now the list will give those services, disabling which does not affect the operation of the computer (if you do not need these particular components in your work). For each - a small explanation (decide for yourself whether to disable this or that service or not). So, disabled services:

  • Search or Windows Search: don't use search? Then feel free to turn it off! This service seriously slows down the OS while indexing all the files on the computer.
  • IP Helper Service: Designed for IPv6 that few people use.
  • Print Manager: Disable if you don't have a printer connected.
  • Secondary logon: used to run applications on behalf of another user - you should not turn it off if you are running applications as an administrator while sitting under a guest account.
  • Offline Files: Maintains the offline files cache.
  • Changed Link Tracking Client: Used to maintain links for roaming NTFS files.
  • Server: no point in running if not in use remote access to files.
  • Remote Registry: You don't need to remote users could change registry settings and affect the operation of the computer? You can safely turn it off.
  • Security Center: monitors the operation of all protective systems and draws up a protocol based on their observations.
  • Bug Reporting Service: You've never filed a bug with Microsoft, have you? To prevent such messages from appearing at all, turn off this service.
  • Program Compatibility Assistant: If you need software compatibility to work correctly, it's worth leaving the service enabled.
  • NetBIOS support over TCP/IP: not needed if not public access to files and printers.
  • Time Service: Provides date and time synchronization for computers on the local network.
  • Windows Image Downloads: Needed to work with scanners and digital cameras.
  • Portable device enumerator: allows, for example, a player to scan a flash drive or CD for media files.
  • Diagnostic Policy Service: Checks system components for mistakes.
