Hardware and software setup

A selection of the most useful add-ons for the Chrome browser. Where are the extensions in the Google Chrome browser Where are the extensions in the new chrome

Add-ons for Google Chrome are additional software modules that expand the functionality of the browser, add new features to it, for example, downloading files, processing content, listening to music, filtering elements on a web page. Thanks to these additional tools, the user can optimally adapt Google Chrome for the implementation of their specialized tasks on the Web.

Add-ons can also be called "plugins for Google Chrome" (the English word is "plug-in"), add-ons (add-on), extensions (extension). However, they should not be confused with pre-installed components (Flash, SSL Error Assistant, recovery, etc.), the list of which is located on the chrome://components/ tab. They are also designed to perform certain functions in the browser, but not additional, but basic, and are built into the web browser distribution. The user can only get acquainted with their version and check for updates. Components do not have their own visual control panels like add-ons do.

This article will tell you how to install plugins in Google Chrome, how to run them, and how to set them up. Plus, in it you will get acquainted with the addons recommended for download.

Where to download add-ons

Add-ons must be downloaded from official store applications.

In the browser's visual bookmarks bar, click the "Services" button and then the "Online Store" icon.

Or enter the URL of the service in the address bar - https://chrome.google.com/webstore/category/extensions.

On the page that opens, using the "Search" field, you can search for extensions directly by its name. Even if you remember it only partially, for example, only the first letters.

You can also specify the type of plugin (for example, "Anti-banner").

Or its functional purpose, when you need to choose the most suitable option from all available solutions.

In addition to the specified request, the user is given the opportunity to connect sorting filters:

Variety (in this case "Extension") and category (by functional purpose);

Opportunities (by features - work offline, from Google developers, free, etc.).

On the loaded page, check out its rating: the level of popularity (how many stars), the number of downloads.

As well as user reviews posted on the "Reviews" tab.

This information will help you get an idea of the chosen solution: whether it is worth downloading, whether its developers can be trusted.

To download the plugin and connect it to your browser, click the "Install" button. In the query panel, confirm the command: also click "Install ...".

Upon completion of the download, as a rule, the addon icon appears in the top bar of Chrome, on the right side of address bar.

Control

To perform various operations on installed add-ons(disabling, deleting), you need to open a tab with their list. Click the Menu button and go to the list: More tools → Extensions.

To temporarily deactivate the addon, not delete it completely, uncheck the box in the "Enable" box in its line.

Performance complete uninstallation performed using the "Cart" button. After clicking it, confirm the action: in the request, select the answer "Delete".

To view background information about the add-on (purpose, version, volume), in its block, under the description text, click the link "Details".

Choice of addons: which ones are better to install?

The list below is based on the TOP user preferences, but is only a recommendation, an approximate guideline for choice. In turn, you can focus on analogues of the presented solutions or completely abandon them.

Ad blocking - Adguard

(analogues - Adblock, Adblock Plus, UBlock Origin)

Adguard is a cross-browser anti-banner. Also available for Firefox, Opera, Yandex. Filters out up to 90-100% of all kinds of ads on web pages. Including frames with video. Blocks pop-ups, phishing and potentially dangerous sites. Prevents sites from running scripts that track user behavior. It speeds up the loading of web pages, as it removes unnecessary and dangerous elements for the user's PC. And, accordingly, saves network traffic. What is especially important when using limited packages of providers.

It has many settings for managing ad filters and for creating your own filtering rules.

Translator - Google Translate

(analogues - ImTranslator, Translator for all languages)

The field of interests of the majority of Russian-speaking users of the Network extends not only to domestic web resources, but also to foreign ones. But not all overseas sites are equipped with Russian localization and not all users speak foreign languages. To read content in a foreign language, you need the Google Translate add-on. It performs machine translation from many languages of the world. The syntax of the text reworked by him cannot be called ideal, but still he conveys the general meaning, the content. And, accordingly, it helps to break down the language barrier: read an interesting post, manual, review of devices, games, and much more.

To use it, you need to select the text and click the icon that appears near the selection fragment.

The translated text will instantly (literally in a few seconds) be displayed in an additional panel. In it, you can also click the "speaker" button to listen to the text of the translation and the original fragment in English.

The addon panel also has a line for entering text and a link to the Google Dictionary website.

Hiding IP with VPN - ZenMate

(analogues - Hotspot Shield, Free Proxy)

Many network virus attacks can be successfully executed if the IP address of the victim's computer is known. Also, it is by IP that restrictions on access to sites are carried out, and not only by their developers, but also by providers supplying Internet services.

You can get rid of all these problems with the help of the ZenMate addon. It automatically adjusts network connection browser through a proxy server over a securely encrypted channel. And thus hides the true IP of the user's PC. On each loaded page of any site where the user will go to Google Chrome with ZenMate connected, the proxy address will be displayed.

In the extension panel, you can quickly change the proxy. You just need to go to the list of available servers and click on the appropriate localization (country).

Visual Bookmarks - Speed Dial

(analogue - )
Favorite sites always want to keep at hand. And, of course, it is desirable that they are always in sight. The plugin will help you to accomplish this task. speed dial. He unfolds to empty tabs browser a beautiful express panel, consisting of blocks with links in the form of graphic thumbnails of sites. Its appearance can be configured: set the number of elements in the panel and their appearance. And also add and remove links in blocks.

Speed Dial is an ideal tool for organizing quick access to sites.

Website analysis - WOT

An old proverb says: "If you don't know the ford, don't go into the water." But the same alertness arises when visiting unfamiliar websites. You never know what is there: viruses, phishing links, social engineering tricks or other troubles. And not always an antivirus, an anti-banner can save you from them. But the WOT addon can. With the help of a special rating system, it notifies the user about the degree of trust in the site, its level of security.

WOT rating icons are placed next to links in SERPs search engines, on sites, and also provides information about the current page in its panel (opens by clicking on the icon).

Before clicking on a link, you need to analyze its rating according to the WOT version: for example, if the icon is green, the site can be trusted, but red is dangerous. Thanks to this preliminary analysis, you can obviously save yourself from the typical troubles that await on the Web - virus attacks. And also make for yourself a selection of useful, trusted sites.

Download videos from video hosting sites - YouTube Video Downloader

As a rule, video hosting sites, including YouTube, do not have links for downloading videos, you can only view them online in the player, on the page. But many want to get them on their computer for offline playback.

And YouTube Video Downloader helps them with this. If the addon is connected to Chrome, just start playing the video and click its icon. A download page opens on a new tab with quality options for the requested file.

except YouTube extension supports a large number of other popular video hosting and social networks. With it, you can download audio tracks and videos both on VKontakte and Odnoklassniki.

Bookmark Manager

Bookmark Manager is the first assistant for users who actively work with a large collection of bookmarks.

It replaces the standard interface of the list of bookmarks with a convenient and visual graphical shell. In it, you can change the display of folders with bookmarks. Perform various operations on a designated group of links, folders (delete, copy, create new directories).

Bookmarks can also be managed through the addon panel (selecting/adding folders, links).

So that useful additional tools for Chrome do not become an annoying burden for you, so that viruses do not penetrate into your computer system under their guise, try to adhere to the following recommendations:

  1. Before installing an addon, be sure to check its popularity status. Do not install addons that have a low rating and a large number of negative feedback. Perhaps they do not work correctly, do not perform the functions certified by their developers, or compromise the security of the PC.
  2. Do not install a large number of add-ons, they can "slow down" the browser and, in general, the entire Windows. The hardware resources of even a powerful computer are not unlimited. Each of the additional tools, albeit to varying degrees, loads RAM(RAM) and CPU(CPU).
  3. Do not use two addons with the same functional purpose at the same time, for example, two anti-banners. They can programmatically conflict with each other, cause Chrome crashes and slow down page loading.
  4. Periodically check the list of installed addons. Completely remove unfamiliar extensions that you personally did not install (which appeared in the browser after installing dubious software). Under their guise, malicious applications can be hidden - hijackers (browser hijackers), adware, spyware.

When choosing addons, initially focus on essential tools that provide safe, convenient web surfing (anti-banner, proxy, translator). And only then add specialized add-ons - mail viewers, video downloaders, etc. This approach will save you from unnecessary research and mistakes when choosing.

Good luck equipping your Google Chrome browser with addons!

Useful extensions for working with texts. Although we at the agency use Googledocs every day, not everyone knew that, for example, documents can be password protected or an electronic signature can be added.

The earliest editors—Word for DOS and WordPerfect—offered a little more. Updates, new versions - and after 30 years, eyes run wide from the number of functions that no longer fit on the Word toolbar.

The Google Docs app has taken the easier route. It only offers basic functions document formatting, but with the ability to work on them as a group. Therefore, the application is ideal for collaborative editing of simple documents. But as soon as you need to do more than edit text with the whole team at the same time, you will return to Word and its many features.

This is where supplements come in handy. There are more than three hundred tools in the Google Docs add-ons menu to help you faster:

  • create documents;
  • edit text;
  • add graphics, formulas and captions;
  • publish texts in a convenient way.

How to use standard Google Docs add-ons

First you need to understand the Google Docs add-ons store. To view additional features open the add-ons menu, click "Install add-ons".

Click on the add-on you are interested in to learn more. If you are ready to install it without hesitation, click "+ Free". The add-on will request access to your Google account and will be added to your documents in a few seconds.

All your add-ons are available in the corresponding menu.

Find the addon you want to use and run it. Some of them open in a special sidebar, others in a drop-down menu, and some just in background.

All tested add-ons for translation work only with the selected text fragment. For example, highlight the desired text, open the translation add-on, select the language, and click the "Translate" button.

To clean up Google Docs and remove unnecessary add-ons, select "Set Up Add-ons" from the corresponding menu. Then click "Customize" next to an add-on that is no longer relevant. Then click "Delete" in the drop-down list. Ready!

If you have multiple accounts google records, a selection of add-ons must be installed separately for each.

Google Docs Tools You Didn't Know About

Sometimes useful Google Docs add-ons don't even need to be downloaded: they're built-in (nicely hidden) in the menu. Before downloading notes, voice input, or fonts, try using the built-in features of Google Docs. They are better than their counterparts in supplements.

Google Keep - quickly create documents from notes and videos

Most texts are written in several approaches. First, you carefully research the topic, add links, quotes. Later, you outline the material in general terms and, finally, draw up the work. Google Keep, an add-on to G Suite, is perfect for this.

Just install the Google Keep extension for the Google Chrome browser. Save in your notebook the information you want to refer to. Then go to Google Docs, click "Tools" and select "Keep Notebook". Your notes will open in the sidebar. Drag the ones you need to work into the document. This way you will already have sketches - a good start for future research.

Google Fonts - Additional Font Types in Google Docs

Don't download font add-ons - none are better than the one built into Google Docs. If you need more fonts than the standard Arial, Georgia, and others, select Other Fonts from the font menu.

You will see all available fonts in Google Fonts (scroll down to select or just enter the name in the search bar). Then add them to your Google Docs account. You can also remove any of the fonts from the Google Docs menu.

Voice input - typing text from dictation

This is a built-in feature of Google Docs. The only inconvenience is that the add-on only works in Google browser Chrome, but it works impressively - it supports 43 languages and understands commands like "Create Bulleted List".

Instead of installing an add-on for voice input just go to "Tools" and click "Voice Input". Then select a language, click on the microphone icon and start talking. Google will enter the dictated text with amazing accuracy with a delay of a few seconds.

In our tests, it performed better than the built-in voice input on Mac computers and PC, and almost as good as Dragon NaturallySpeaking. To go to newline or remove the last word, just tell Google about it and your command will be executed automatically.

How to copy comments

Google Docs recently made it possible for its users to make a complete copy of a document, including comments. This feature was previously unavailable. Additions helped to copy the document in full, but the comments looked strange: they were displayed on behalf of your account, and then the name of the real author and the text of the comment.

Now everything is much easier. Click "File" and select "Make a copy." In the copy name window, check the box next to "Copy comments and tips."

29 Best Google Docs Add-ons

Let's talk about tools for formatting text, adding content, automating tasks and publishing, which are not built into the basic functionality of Google Docs. Each add-on offers a set of unique features or is significantly better than the built-in ones.

Formatting text and documents

1. Styles - customizes the design of the document in one click

Missing the usual page style in Microsoft Word with his fonts and color combinations? Styles add-on from AbleBits will return your familiar document design in one click. AbleBits has 20 preset styles ranging from understated (for reports) to fun handwritten. Styles are similar to their counterparts in Word.

To customize your document, open the Styles menu, select a style to view, and then click Apply Style. The only downside is that you can't save your own style.

2. Doc Builder - creates documents from snippets and saves custom styles

If you can only install one add-on, choose Doc Builder. Its main function is to insert fragments. Just create a separate Google Doc with the text you use frequently. It could be, for example:

  • billing template;
  • the title you use in your emails;
  • the structure you use in reports.

So, if you need to transfer any of the above elements to a new document, open the sidebar in this new document and select the file you need. Doc Builder will paste text, images and formatting from the old document directly into the new one.

The Apply Formatting section at the bottom of the Doc Builder sidebar is even more interesting - it's the only reliable way to create your own Google Doc styles.

The add-on uses Google Sheets to save styles. To open the table, click on the arrow and then change the text of each column as you wish. Then select a style in the Doc Builder sidebar to apply it to the document. Similar to the Styles add-on, only with big amount functions.

3. Footnote Style - for footnote design

Google Docs' built-in styling tool can set your favorite design by default. But this applies only to headings and titles, there is no style for footnotes. Accordingly, the design of each new footnote will have to be adjusted separately. The default style for footnotes is ten point Arial, even if you customize other footnotes in the document.

Footnote Style has made this task easy. Highlight one footnote, choose the style you like, and click Update Footnote Style to Match. Then add any footnotes that your text is supposed to have and click "Update Footnotes" from the menu. Done: all footnotes are formatted.

4. Page Layout Tool - sets custom page sizes

If you want to print information on cards, paper, envelopes, postcards, or set the page sizes in Google Docs yourself, the Page Layout Tool is just what you need.

Margins can be set along with the page size. Page resizing may take several minutes, especially if you have a large document. If you are exporting a document to PDF format, Google Doc will save new size pages.

To print the document, do not forget to click the " Additional settings” and select the page size that best suits the specified parameters. For individual settings click the "Print using the system dialog box" button and set right size pages. Otherwise, the document will be printed in A4 size or the formats you normally use for printing.

5. Code Blocks - formats code directly in documents

Do you document your code in Google Docs or just want your colleagues to be able to comment on your code? Code Blocks fits perfectly.

Select the code in the document, then open the Code Blocks sidebar. Set the language and theme. To see how the formatted code will look in text, click Preview. The background of the text can be chosen at your discretion to make it easier for readers to see your blocks of code, or you can remove it altogether.

6. Doc Tools - sorts text in lists

Doc Tools has several tools for changing letter case and highlighting text. The built-in tools in Google Docs are more reliable in this regard. But with the help of this add-on it is convenient to sort the text.

Select a list or several paragraphs, in the add-on menu, select "Sort Ascending" or "Sort Descending". You can sort the text both alphabetically and numerically. Also, Doc Tools will help if you need to replace numbers with letters and vice versa.

7. Text Cleaner - removes formatting and cleans text

If you click “Clear Formatting” in a Google Doc, all text selection will be removed: links, bold, italic, color, and so on. Text Cleaner removes only the necessary fragments. Plus, the add-on removes line breaks and spaces.

Highlight the text, then click Text Cleaner in the add-ons menu. You can set up autocorrect quotes, remove links, line breaks, tabs, spaces, or all formatting at once. You can even set your own options for deletion. To do this, go to Text Cleaner and click "Customize". Then choose the formatting you want to keep or remove. Click Save.

8. Table Formatter - formats tables

Google Docs doesn't have as many options for customizing tables as Word does. The Table Formatter add-on has a standard (more than 60 built-in structures) set of tools for working with tables.

Place the cursor in any table cell or select part of the table, then select the Table Formatter template. To style all tables in the document in the same style, select the Apply to all tables check box.

To create your own table style, go to the Custom Templates tab in Table Formatte and set options for the document frame and rows.

If you need to split a table, run the Splitting and Merging of Tables addon. It splits the table starting from the row where the cursor is. The header line is carried over to all parts of the broken table. True, this addition violates the formatting and unreliably combines tables, so we did not describe it in detail. But Splitting and Merging of Tables is useful if you need to split a table very quickly.

Work automation

9. EasyBib - Automatically draws up a bibliography

EasyBib, developed by the Chegg team, allows you to quickly build your bibliography in Google Docs. All you need to do is enter the title of the book, article, or website address you are referring to, choose the appropriate style, and add the source to the bibliography.

Once you have completed all the steps, click "Create Bibliography". The add-on will begin compiling the sources, display them in alphabetical order, and add them to the end of the document.

If you can't find a source online, Paperpile can help you find journal articles and list your own links.

10. Search and Navigate - for navigating large documents

The add-on lists all elements: headings, images, and tables. You can go to the desired item in one click. Working with multipage documents is accelerated by bookmarks in the text and the transition between them.

Check the box "Autostart add-on in this document" in the settings if you need to quickly navigate a large document.

The search tool is the best feature of this add-on. Instead of the standard tool in Google Docs (where you have to click on each search result separately), Search and Navigate puts all search results in context, so it's easier to browse and navigate directly to the desired option.

11. Translate+ - translates text in Google Docs

Google Translate has an add-on for Google Docs that only supports English, French, German, Japanese, and Spanish.

To translate text into any language, use Translate+. If you are satisfied with the quality of the translation, you can add the translation directly to the document. There is a drawback: the add-on can only be used in Chrome and Safari browsers, but not in Firefox.

12. Link Chooser - Quickly navigates to Google Drive files

Want your own Wiki inside a Google Doc? Or do you need fast access to other files while you are working in the same document? The Link Chooser will handle this task without any problems. Run the add-on and select the file or folder you want to link to. After a few seconds, a link with the original file name will appear in your document.

It's much faster than opening drive.google.com, copying the link and pasting it into a document.

13. DocSecrets - Protect document fragments with a password

You can also encrypt existing text: select a passage and click Encrypt Text. The text will still be visible in the history of the document, which means that it is not so secret after all. To see the hidden text, other users must install DocSecrets and enter your password, otherwise they will only see colored lines.

Do not use the add-on for really important data, such as financial information. But still, it's a good way to add a personal comment or keep some important details, leaving them unknown to others.

14. Speakd - listens to the document

Speakd is the other side of Google Docs' built-in Voice Typing tool. Speakd can only read English documents. Select the text and press the Play button to have the robot read it to you. This will help relax your eyes for a few minutes.

Adding Additional Content to Documents

15. Wolfram Alpha - Google Docs Search Network

You are writing a report and you need to find out when the Second World War ended, what is the name of phosphorus in the periodic table, how many calories are in a banana or the capital of Iran? Don't rush to open new tab and google. Most likely, something will distract you. Instead, type the exact phrase into the document, select it, then click Find in Wolfram Alpha. After a few seconds, your text will be replaced with the correct answer from the Wolfram Alpha databases.

It's an almost magical way to fill in data you don't know about. The add-on also knows how to solve mathematical problems in Google Docs. And if you need something else, like an image of a flag, a plot of a function, steps to solve an equation, or full nutritional information about certain foods, all you have to do is open the Wolfram Alpha add-on, find that data, and paste it into your document as an image. .

16. MindMeister - creates mind maps

Install the MindMeister add-on in Google Docs, open it from the add-on menu, and click Insert as Mind Map. In a few seconds, you will have a mindmap image in your Google Doc. 17. Lucidchart Diagrams - Adds Diagrams, Flowcharts and Graphs

Lucidchart Diagrams can be daunting for beginners. The add-on only allows you to start a new diagram in the document itself, and then sends you to the Lucidchart app to build the complete diagram. Once you're done, you'll be able to insert an image from the Lucidchart sidebar. It's easier than working in other charting add-ons, but still has to work outside of Google Docs.

Price: free up to 25 megabytes; basic plan - from $5.95 per month (up to 100 megabytes and unlimited documents)

18. Yob Graph Editor - builds graphs, equations and formulas

Google Docs has a formula editor for a set of equations, taking into account both superscripts and subscripts of variables. But formulas cannot be displayed graphically. Yob Graph Editor will help you with this.

Enter the features or data you want to graph from, then click Window to select the size of the graph, Labels to name the graph, and Styles. Only then can you insert the graph into the document. In the side menu there is an option to scale the chart to see its final version and adjust it the way you want.

If you need to plot a formula based on a formula that you created using the built-in Google Docs feature (Insert - Formula), the WizKids CAS add-on is the way to go. True, it is more difficult to use and watermarks graphics to protect them from copying. For advanced graphs and formulas, you can also use the Wolfram Alpha add-on.

19. Flat Music Notation - writes music

Flat Music Notation is not just a tool that allows you to create small pieces of music and add them to Google Docs. It also lets you listen to your creation and tweak it on the go. Cost: Free for 100 Google Analytics queries per day; $49 per month for Supermetrics Pro (with annual subscription) for YouTube, Twitter, Google Ads, MailChimp, Facebook and other data sources.

22. Mail Merge Contacts - creates letter templates

Want to personalize documents or send bulk emails? Mail Merge Contacts is the easiest way to do this in Google Docs.

In a few seconds, the entire document will be available in Markdown or HTML markup. The text can be copied and used anywhere. And if you change something in the document, just click the Markdown or HTML button again to get the updated code.

The add-on worked almost perfectly in our tests - much better than other add-ons for converting to Markdown. Note: the add-on will always convert the entire document and will not work if you have any selection. So make sure you don't select any text before you try to convert the document.

25. Image Extractor - exports images from documents

The only way to extract images from Google Docs is to download the HTML document and then find the image in the ZIP file. With Image Extractor, you don't have to.

27. Scrifter - script text

Enter the text for scenes and dialogues, in the add-ons menu, hover over Scrifter and select "Automatically format selection" or "Automatically format all text." In a few minutes, your text will look like a script (at least it worked with the first scenes from Spy Get Out).

If you want to add your own formatting, just open the sidebar to manually add scenes, titles, actions, and dialogs.

Screenplay Formatter is a more popular alternative to Scrifter. The add-on offers more options for manual formatting, but it doesn't have the handy automatic formatting tools that Scrifter provides.

28. Avery Label Merge - creates badges and labels

To create a badge in Avery Label Merge, you will have to follow more steps than in regular add-ons with the same function. However, this addition is the best among analogues. First, create a Google Sheets document and enter necessary information. Add column titles such as "Name" and "Address" that stand out well from the rest of the text.

Then open a blank Google Doc and run the Avery Label Merge add-on. Select a label or badge depending on the paper size you need. Rectangles will appear on the document page and the side menu of the add-on itself will open.

Now you need to enter information. Select the Google Sheets you prepared ahead of time and the column titles will appear in the sidebar. Choose what information you want to add, format it the way the badge should look like in the end. Finally, click the "Merge" button and badges will appear in your Google Doc - each with individual contact information from Google Sheets.

To bookmarks

But now more than 30 years have passed - here is an update, there a new version, - and now text editors so many that the eyes run wide, and the tools built into them no longer fit in all the toolbar tabs in Word.

The creators of Google Docs decided to make it easier. They've developed a simple set of basic document formatting features and packed it with top-notch collaboration tools. It's perfect for group work on simple documents, but if you need more than that, you'll probably fall back on Word and its many features tucked away in submenus of the main toolbar.

This is where extensions come into play. The extensions menu in Google Docs includes more than three hundred tools that help you create documents faster, make corrections to texts, add graphics, equations, captions, and publish your work in the most convenient way.

We carefully reviewed this list, selected the most promising tools, and tested over 60 extensions. The best ones are listed below.

How to use Google Docs extensions

First you need to learn how to navigate the extension store for Google Docs. Just open the "Extensions" menu, click on "Get Extensions", then you will see hundreds of add-ons that you can add to Google Docs.

When you find something you want to try, click to see the details, or simply click the "+ Free" button to install the extension in Google Docs. It remains only to open the extension access to your Google account, and in a few seconds it will be added to your Docs.

All added extensions will be placed in the "Extensions" menu. Find the extension you want to use and then open it from its own menu. Some extensions will open in a separate sidebar, others in a pop-up window, and others will simply start running in the background. Most extensions only work with selected text.

For example, we tested several translation extensions, and all of them translate only the text that is selected. So first identify the text you want to translate, then open the translation extension from the Extensions menu, select the desired language and click the Translate button.

Let's say you want to clean up your Google Docs and remove any extensions you no longer use. To do this, go to the "Management" section in the "Extensions" menu and click "Delete" next to the extension that you no longer want to use.

Do you have multiple Google Accounts? Then your favorite extensions will need to be installed in each Google Docs account separately.

The Best Google Tools Hidden in Google Docs

Some of the best Google Docs add-ons don't even require installation. They are built in and hidden in the menu. Try out the built-in functionality of Google Docs before you try Notes, speech input, or a font extension. It's much better than any other alternative extensions we've been able to find.

1. Google Keep: Helps you quickly create documents from notes and clippings from the web

Most documents are not written at once. Work on them begins with careful research - link here, quote there - which you first use for sketches, and then finalize in a document. Google Keep is the latest addition to G Suite and is perfect for the job.

2. Google Fonts: Adds Additional Fonts to Google Docs

Do not download additional font extensions for Google Docs - none of them will be better than the built-in Google Fonts package. If Arial, Georgia and other built-in fonts don't suit you, just click on the arrow on the Fonts menu itself and select More Fonts.

In this section, you can see all available fonts and add them to your Google Docs account. There you can also remove any of the fonts that have already been added to the Google Docs menu so as not to clutter up the menu. This is an easy way to get fonts from the same library as all other extensions.

3. Voice typing

This feature is built into (though hidden) in Google Docs: Voice Typing. The only peculiarity is that it only works in the Chrome browser. But it works surprisingly well: it supports 43 languages and understands commands such as “create a list”.

Click Tools → Voice Typing, select a language, click on the microphone icon and start speaking. Google will print whatever you say after a short delay with amazing accuracy. Our tests have shown that this feature works even better than the built-in voice input tools on Mac and PC. It's almost as good as Dragon NaturallySpeaking.

And if you need to move to a new line or just delete the last words you said, just say it out loud and Google will automatically fulfill your request.

A comparison of the speech input feature in Google Docs with other applications for voice text input is available in our review.

4. Contents of the document: a brief overview of the text and moving through the paragraphs

Some extensions, including the popular Table of contents and the Document Navigator, are designed to make it easy for the user to find headings in a document, form its content, and navigate through paragraphs. But the tool built into Google Docs, the Document outline, does it better than the rest.

As you compose your document, use the built-in Paragraph Styles functionality to designate the title, headings, and subheadings. Then, to start navigating through the document, click Tools → Document Outline. In the sidebar on the left you will see a list of titles. Click on a heading to jump to that section, Or click on the cross to remove a heading from the content.

Would you like this list to become content in your document? Just click Insert → Table of Contents and add it to your document, complete the content with pagination and links to the correct sections.

32 Best Google Docs Extensions

Now let's look at extensions that are not built into Google Docs. They help format text, cite research, add additional content, automate tasks, and publish work. Each of them performs unique functions that Google Docs does not have, or does it better than the built-in functionality. So much better that it's not a pity to spend a minute installing the extension.

Formatting text and documents

1. Styles: one-click customization of document appearance

Do you miss the built-in page styles in Microsoft Word, where font and color are combined, which in one click improve the look of the document? The extension contains 20 ready-made styles, ranging from strict and professional, suitable for reports, to more fun, handwritten, which are similar to similar templates for Word.

Simply expand the Styles extension sidebar, select the style you want, preview it, then click the Apply button to modify your document. The only downside to this extension is that you can't customize any of the preset styles or save your own.

2. Doc Builder: to create documents from fragments, save custom style

If you want to plot a formula that you have already written using the built-in Google Docs Insert functions→ Equationtool, then Wizkids CAS is another option. Although it watermarks the chart and is harder to use. But for more advanced graphs and formulas, the Wolfram Alpha extension is the best option.

20. Auto-Latex Equations: to display LaTeX formulas

If you're looking for an easier way to insert formatted formulas into your text without having to use the Google Docs formula and equation editor, Auto-Latex Equations is the way to go. You can type formulas in LaTeX markup, then open the extension's sidebar and turn all your text equations into formula-rich images in seconds.

Another way to make writing formulas easier is EquatIO . The Google Chrome extension is available for $100 per year. It lets you draw formulas or write them as plain text and then turn them into formatted formulas in Google Docs.

21. Flat Music Notation: for making music

Now the extension will ask you for data that will determine the content of the labels. Select the Google Sheets spreadsheet you created earlier and you'll see its columns in the sidebar. Select the element to add to your label, then format the text as needed until it looks complete.

Finally, click Merge and you'll have a brand new Google Doc filled with the labels or badges you need. Each has its own unique contact information from a Google Sheets spreadsheet.

32. HelloFax: To fax a Google Docs document

The same team that made HelloSign also created HelloFax, the fastest way to fax documents from Google Docs to customers who still haven't got email. Just write desired document, then enter the fax number, recipient's name, and message. Click Send and the fax will be sent as quickly as if you sent an email.

HelloFax Pricing: The first ten pages can be sent for free. The Home Office plan for 300 pages per month starts at $9.99.
